Mercy Chinwo: Court orders arrest of VeryDarkMan over alleged defamation

A Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of social critic Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna issued the bench warrant on Thursday, March 13, 2025, after VeryDarkMan’s failure to appear in court after being summoned on March 5, 2025.

The court’s action stems from allegations of criminal defamation made by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

VeryDarkMan had allegedly made defamatory statements on social media, accusing Chinwo of being involved in a contractual dispute and diverting $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Eezee Tee.

Chinwo’s legal team provided evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to support their claims that VeryDarkMan’s allegations were false and damaging to her reputation.

Despite his VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju’s appeal to reconsider the bench warrant, the court insisted that VeryDarkMan be produced in court by security agencies.

This development is part of a legal battle between Chinwo and VeryDarkMan.

Chinwo’s counsel is also seeking N1.1 billion in damages from VeryDarkMan in a separate case before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Court declines arraignment of Mercy Chinwo’s ex-manager

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday, declined the arraignment of Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, a former manager of gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo.

Justice Alexander Owoeye held that the court would not proceed with the case until an ongoing administrative process was concluded.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Onyedikachukwu and his company, Eezee Tee, with money laundering and dishonest conversion of $340,000.

During Thursday’s proceedings, prosecutor Mrs Bilikisu Buhari appeared for the EFCC, while Mr Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), and Dr Monday Ubani represented the defence.

Buhari informed the court that the matter was set for arraignment, and the defence confirmed their readiness to proceed. However, Justice Owoeye clarified that he could not take the arraignment due to ongoing administrative procedures.

Defence counsel Ojukwu then sought confirmation on whether parties should maintain the status quo. The court, howerver,  reiterated that no pronouncement would be made until the administrative process was completed.

Ubani reminded the court that he had previously undertaken to present the defendant, which he had now fulfilled. The court acknowledged this but maintained its position.

Following mutual agreement, the court adjourned the case until May 14.

The charges allege that Onyedikachukwu withheld funds from Chinwo’s digital platforms and events.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the EFCC secured an arrest warrant for Onyedikachukwu on Jan. 16 but withdrew it on Jan. 24. On Feb. 17, the court ordered his appearance for arraignment.

Meanwhile, the defence has filed a preliminary objection, arguing that the matter was a contractual dispute rather than a criminal case.

Gospel musician Mercy Chinwo sues VDM for alleged defamation

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a defamation lawsuit against blogger Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suit stems from alleged defamatory statements by VDM on social media, accusing Chinwo of involvement in a contractual dispute and the purported diversion of $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.

The lawsuit, filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, Chinwo’s legal representative, seeks an order compelling VDM to delete, retract, and issue a public apology for all allegedly false and defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand.

In support of her claims, Chinwo furnished the court with documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to substantiate that VDM’s allegations are entirely false.

On February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos held that the arrest warrant against Ee Zee Tee over alleged fraudulent conversion subsists and adjourned the case until March 6, 2025 for the arraignment of the record label boss.

In the fresh defamation suit filed, Olajengbesi said VDM made the posts without provocation and  apparent intention of lowering the Chinwo’s estimation in the eye of right-thinking members of the society.

He told the court that the VDM’s videos and posts are false and have caused significant harm to the Chinwo’s public image, reputation, professional standing and emotional well-being.

The lawyer said VDM made the posts on his Instagram handle on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 17th February 2025 accusing Chinwo of “going behind the record label to go and collect shows, she was collecting gigs and she was not remitting money to the record label”.

In the suit, Olajengbesi said VDM posted a series of videos to millions of followers showing a “caricaturist and disdainful portrayal of the Claimant (Chinwo) as well the Defendant’s (VDM’s) bias towards the claim of Mr. EeZee T thereby deliberately ridiculing the position of the Claimant in the dispute between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T”.

“The Claimant avers that she has neither had any form of relationship with the Defendant nor was the Defendant involved in the issue between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T in any material particular.

“The Claimant avers that the statements which the Defendant made in the videos he published his Instagram page were as though the Defendant was personally involved in the issues between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T; however, these statements were not only false, but damning and injurious to the Claimant’s public image and reputation.”

The lawyer sought “an order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to remove the defamatory posts from all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to cause a retraction of the said defamatory statement in favour of the Claimant on all his social media platforms and to publish an unreserved apology to the Claimant in two widely circulated national dailies and all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendants to write an unreserved apology to the Claimant and publish same in four national dailies, causing same to run for at least 14 consecutive days.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the Sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) only as General Damages for defamation.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant, the Sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) only as Punitive and Aggravated Damages for the grossly defamatory statement.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay the sum of N25,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) as the cost of this suit.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay 10% (Ten percent) on the judgment sum per annum until final liquidation of the judgment sum by the Defendants.”

  • ‘Dispute between EeZee Tee, Mercy Chinwo contractual, not criminal’

‘Dispute between EeZee Tee, Mercy Chinwo contractual, not criminal’

A Christian youth advocacy group, the Nigerian Christian Youth Network (NCYN), has said the dispute between music producer Ezekiel Onyedikachi, popularly known as EeZee Tee, and gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, is strictly contractual.

It faulted the involvement of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the matter and urged the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) to intervene.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Michael Ekwere, the group appealed to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and notable Christian leaders to intervene, saying the dispute is unhealthy for the Christian music industry.

The group noted that, from its findings, the issue between EeZee Tee and Mercy Chinwo is not within EFCC’s mandate.

It, however, expressed dismay that the commission would give serious attention to a dispute between a gospel artist and her label company due to personal interest.

The statement reads: “As a faith-based organisation, we are concerned with the current dispute between EeZee Tee and Mercy Chinwo because they are our brethren in the faith.

“We have carefully examined the issue, which has generated much uproar in the Christian and secular communities, and concluded that it is purely a contractual dispute.

“On the one hand, Mercy Chinwo is alleging that her legitimate earnings are being withheld byEeZee Tee Concept, owned by EeZee Tee.

“On the other hand, the record label is also demanding an unbiased account reconciliation, claiming that Mercy Chinwo failed to remit the company’s share from her public engagements.

“Clearly, this is a simple contractual dispute that either party can seek to resolve in a civil court.

“We are, however, worried that the EFCC has now become a tool in the hands of one party to intimidate and harass the other.

“From our findings, acting on a petition, the EFCC, without any valid court order, last year froze the domiciliary account of EeZee Tee, detained him in Ilorin, Kwara State, for nine days, and further compelled him to pay Mercy Chinwo $274,000.

“When EeZee Tee challenged his illegal detention through a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the EFCC, the commission quickly ran to another court to obtain an arrest warrant against him.

“In a three-count charge now before the Federal High Court, Lagos, the EFCC is accusing EeZee Tee of ‘fraudulent conversion’ of the legitimate earnings of Chinwo and another artist, Judikay.

“From what is ongoing, it is clear that the EFCC is acting on a script, either for personal or pecuniary interest, and we urge the commission’s chairman to call his officers to order.

“We see no reason why the commission would allow itself to be used as a tool to harass, intimidate, and embarrass someone in a clear civil dispute.

“We call on the AGF, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to look into this case and many other similar cases for which the EFCC has been accused of pursuing merely to embarrass and intimidate respectable Nigerians.

“We also use this medium to appeal to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian leaders to look into the matter, which we believe is unhealthy for the Christian music industry.”

  • Court upholds arrest warrant against Mercy Chinwo’s ex-manager Eezee

Court upholds arrest warrant against Mercy Chinwo’s ex-manager Eezee

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has confirmed that the arrest warrant for Mr. Ezekiel Onyedikachi, also known as Eezee, a former manager of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, accused of fraudulently converting funds, is still valid.

Presiding over the case, Justice Alexander Owoeye upheld the warrant while adjourning the hearing of the criminal charges brought against Onyedikachi.

The court had initially granted the arrest warrant on January 16, following an ex-parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The gospel singer, Chinwo, alleged that Onyedikachi diverted approximately $345,000 in royalties due to her without remittance.

EFCC counsel, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari, informed the court that the prosecution had been unable to serve the charge on the defendant, who had been unreachable. Consequently, the court granted the application for an arrest warrant against Onyedikachi.

At the last adjourned date on January 24, the defence counsel, Dr. Monday Ubani (SAN), undertook to accept service of the charge on behalf of the defendant.

However, the defence counsel also informed the court of a preliminary objection challenging the charge.

The court had accordingly, adjourned the case for arraignment of the defendant.

At the resumption of proceedings on Monday, Ubani (SAN) announced an appearance for the defendant, while Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) appeared for the prosecution.

Ubani informed the court that the case ought to be for arraignment of the defendant, but that the defence had a notice of preliminary objection before the court. However, the judge, asked him a question “Where is the defendant?”

In response, he told the court that he received a call from the defendant, who said he had a terrible accident this morning and told the court that the defendant would be available at the next date.

When the defence counsel sought to move his objection, the court declined because he could not be heard, until the defendant appeared before the court.

Justice Owoeye held that the court had not assumed jurisdiction over the case, since the plea of the defendant had not been taken.

The prosecuting counsel on his part, described the procedure adopted by the defence as strange.

Citing provisions of sections 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, (ACJA) as well as judicial authorities of State Vs Achara and Frn Vs Yahaya Bello, he urged the court not to hear the defence.

“My lord, it is a show of shame and outright disrespect for this court, for the defendant to be absent on three different occasions in a criminal trial,” he said.

The prosecutor informed the court that shortly after the court rose at the last adjourned date, the defendant was seen within the court’s premises, granting a media interview.

He described same as a ‘shame and complete dishonour’ to the court for a defendant to exhibit such attitudes.

Besides, he told the court that if the defendant was indisposed as represented by counsel, then he ought to be deposed by way of affidavit, to be shown as proof before the court.

In the circumstance, Oyedepo prayed the court to issue a bench warrant to compel the attendance of the defendant before the court, adding that the same is important to protect the integrity of the court.

Although the defence counsel objected to the grant of a bench warrant by the court and undertook to personally produce the defendant on his honour, the prosecution argued that the defence’s honour or integrity was not an issue.

Oyedepo maintained that the court issued a legal instrument, compelling the appearance of the defendant.

In a short ruling, the court held that from its record, the earlier Bench Warrant by the court still subsisted as it had not been withdrawn.

The judge consequently, ordered the defendant to appear in court on the next adjourned date for his arraignment, either by the subsisting bench warrant or by production by his defence counsel.

Upon the agreement of counsel, the court adjourned the case to March 6, for the arraignment of the defendant.

  • Eezee Tee claims Mercy Chinwo sought deal through third parties

Eezee Tee claims Mercy Chinwo sought deal through third parties

Gospel music executive Ezekiel Thankgod aka EeZee Tee, has claimed that singer Mercy Chinwo actively sought to be signed to his record label, EeZee Conceptz, before their eventual contractal agreement.

In a statement released recently, EeZee Tee’s team stated that Mercy Chinwo made deliberate efforts to secure a deal with the label, enlisting the help of several individuals to facilitate the process.

“Mercy Chinwo personally went around Port Harcourt soliciting people’s assistance to get signed to EeZee Conceptz. Some of such people include K.O Baba, Hilda Dokubo, and Pastor Temple Odoko, who prevailed on EeZee Tee to facilitate the deal,” the legal representatives stated.

The legal team further alleged that while under contract, Mercy Chinwo directed booking revenues into her personal account instead of remitting them to the label.

“Mercy Chinwo diverted booking revenues into her personal account while still under contract with EeZee Conceptz,” they claimed.

Additionally, they raised concerns over Mercy Chinwo’s decision to involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the dispute. The legal team questioned why the matter, which they believe is a contractual disagreement, was taken to the EFCC’s Ilorin Command instead of being resolved through civil legal channels.

The statement also referenced an alleged financial transaction, stating that EeZee Tee transferred $274,000 to Mercy Chinwo’s account during the period of the dispute.
