The stakes would be high on Sunday as Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr is expected to be in the stands to watch the match between MFM FC and El-Kanemi Warriors in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match between the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title hopefuls will be played at the Agege Stadium, in one of the biggest fixtures of matchday 18.

MFM FC, who lost 4-0 to Nasarawa United in their mid-week fixture in Lafia, will be looking to maintain their impressive winning streak against El-Kanemi Warriors.

It was the second time they had conceded four goals this season.

On their part, the Maiduguri warriors are yet to record a win or grab a point, away from home this term.

Rohr’s eyes is sure to be glued especially on the league’s top scorer Stephen Odey, who has scored in every game at the ‘Soccer Temple’ so far this season.

This fixture will be particularly exciting as Odey who has scored 13 goals, could set a new record in the NPFL if he bags a brace in his 15th appearance.

Also El-Kanemi Warriors could also go top of the log for the first time if they manage to nick this one.

Gombe United ‘s Kennedy Obiokor believes that matching MFM ‘s intense approach will be the key to securing a victory when both sides clash on Sunday.

And their next Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) encounter see them welcome the high-flying Lagos side to the Pantami International Stadium.

“MFM are an ambitious team, they know what they are doing on the pitch and most of their players have been together for a long time. It’s really hard to beat them if you don’t match their intensity,” Obiokor told Goal .

“We have achieved important victories in the past. It’s going to be an excellent game. If we beat them (MFM) at home, we will take a great step forward.

“The most important thing is to continue to believe and expect to win matches .

“He is no doubt a very talented player and he will surely get his debut soon since we still have a lot of matches to play. The three points is the most important factor in the league and he will contribute in real match situation soon.

“But in all, I am glad that we defeated Rangers. They are the reigning champions, they are tough and we also showed them what we are capable of doing.”

Ilechukwu mentioned a few hours before the 2-1 victory over the topflight champions that Akanni, 16, will make his league bow. Although the youngster was included in the matchday squad, he was left on the bench for the entire duration of the encounter.

Odey scored the second goal to take his season’s goal tally to six after Olatunbosun Sikiru had netted the first goal in the 30th minute. Bobby Clement scored a consolation for the Flying Antelopes.

“We are improving game after game. Despite what we did last season many people still said that we didn’t beat big teams. We have defeated Kano Pillars and Rangers this season and I think our performances this season are a good signal that we are now a force in the league. We are very focused and determined to achieve something tangible this season,” Odey told SportingLife.

  • MFM learnt valuable lessons, says Ogunye

MFM FC’s Austine Ogunye has stated that the club has learnt valuable lessons from their first season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“At some point last season, we were carried away after recording some very good results but now we have learnt from our mistakes. Those lessons from last season have been of immense help to us now,” Ogunye told Goal.

“It was a tough period but we just had to cope with it. Loss of concentration may have been the major reason during that period.

“I think football is normal either home or away, it’s just your mind set. Some players think playing away from home is a very difficult task, but we believe that having the right mindset to conquer can propel a team to pick points on the road and not still drop points at home.”

The Olukoya Boys had an eventful debut season in the Nigerian top flight league after starting off with a win away from home, but had a free fall that almost led to relegation.

However, the Olukoya Boys currently sit third in the standings this campaign and Ogunye admitted that the experience has been of immense help.
