  • Mum donates chairs to NYSC in son’s memory

Despite losing her son at the Edo State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp last year, Mrs Oluwatoyin Atobatele has donated 300 chairs to the NYSC Lagos camp.

Lagos State NYSC Director Prince Mohammed Momoh announced the donation during the closing ceremony of the orientation programme for the 2017 Batch B Corps members yesterday at the Iyana Ipaja orientation camp.

Momoh thanked Mrs Atobatele for looking beyond her grief and called for a minute silence in memory of Michael and others who may have died during their service year.

“Mrs Atobatele, mother of one of us who came from the United Kingdom to serve and died in camp in Edo State, has given us 300 chairs.  Michael’s sister is in Lagos camp now,” he said.

Mrs Atobatele said the donation was done through the Michael Atobatele Foundation, which was initiated to promote the values shared by the late Michael who died at 22.

She said the graduate of Business and Human Resource Management from the University of Hertfordshire would have empowered youths like the foundation is now doing.

“If he was alive, maybe that’s what he would have done because he doesn’t like to see anyone suffer; he likes to see everyone okay and he had passion about Nigeria; he believed that Nigeria will become a better place.  These are youths; and now we have a foundation in his memory and all we do is to empower youths so whenever we see youths having problems we help them,” she said.

Mrs Atobatele called for the government to rehabilitate orientation camps to make them fitting for habitation by the fresh graduates.

“My opinion is that this NYSC should be scrapped; but in the situation that they don’t scrap it, they should make life a lot easier and better for these kids.  While my son was in Edo State, he was there for three weeks; he never ate the food. Lagos State (camp) is not like that but some states…I think Lagos State is better – probably followed by other states. The bed my son used then, I told him to return from camp.  But you know boys, he kept saying “No, mummy I’ll survive”.

“It (the camp) is not a place to be.  Some (states) use primary schools.  It is not meant for camping; 40 children in one room! How do you want them to survive?  The skill acquisition (programme) I like it. I feel other states should emulate Lagos and make life easier for corpers,” she said.

Reacting to the issue of facilities, Momoh said the NYSC Director-General, Brig General Suleiman Kazaure was doing his best to ensure they are up to standard even though state governments are meant to take care of them.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode, represented by Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Mr Olaseye Oladejo, counselled the Corps members to take their skills acquisition training seriously so as to qualify “for a start-up capital from the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund established to provide financial support for   residents and Corps members  serving in the state.”

Police arrest mum, others for killing teacher in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a mother, her daughter and another person for killing a school teacher, Miss Rita Odilinye.

The late Rita was said to have flogged one of her pupils, identified simply as Chinaza, for failing to sweep the classroom.

The incident reportedly happened at Starlight Secondary School at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area, Mr Mark Ijarafu, addressed reporters on the incident.

He said: “We have arrested the mother, daughter and one other person.

“The body of the teacher has been deposited at Iyi-Enu Mortuary while investigation is ongoing as we talk. The command is ready and willing to do justice to the matter.”

A source said the mother, identified simply as Mrs Okafor, with Chinaza, and a yet-to-be-identified person are in police custody.

The Nation gathered that the teacher taught the pupils Igbo language.

Another source, who did not want his name mentioned for security reasons, recalled that last Friday, when the teacher found that her class had not been swept, she asked the pupils who was supposed to do the task.

The source added: “It was then the pupils told her that Chinaza, who should have swept the class before going home the previous day, did not sweep it.

“When the teacher asked her, the pupil was said to have proved stubborn, making the angry teacher to flog her.

“While she was being flogged, she ran out of the classroom and scaled the school fence, as the gate was locked. She went straight to her house where she reported the matter to her mother. The pupil said she had been beaten black and blue by her teacher for not sweeping the classroom.

“Furiously, the mother went to the school, armed with sticks and accompanied by her daughter and one other person, to avenge the flogging of her daughter.

“Efforts by other teachers to calm down the aggrieved persons and allow the school authorities handle the matter fell on deaf ears.”

    •Grandson also paraded

An 80-year-old man, Kwacha Manu and his son, Likita, 40, have been paraded by Niger State Police Command for their alleged involvement in the death of their 100-year-old mother and grandmother, Inne Kaiyo.

The incident occurred at Marke Gada Maje in Rijau Local Government.

The Nation learnt that following the death of Magajiya, 17, her grandfather, Manu, who could not bear the loss, allegedly used sticks to flog his mother to death.

Sources alleged that Inne used witchcraft to kill people in her extended family.

Magajiya is said to be the ninth person to die in “unnatural circumstances” in the family.

Manu, who admitted to have flogged his mother, claimed he only flogged her on the legs, “which couldn’t have killed her.”

He alleged: “After killing my granddaughter, I could not just let her go free. So I used a dry stick to cane her on the legs, asking her why she killed her great grandchild, who took care of me, unlike her, who did nothing for me.”

Asked how they knew his mother was responsible for the girl’s death, Manu said: “We knew through my late granddaughter, Magajiya, when she was ill. She cried and begged her great grandmother, Inne, to release her soul. We all begged my mother to release her, but she refused. I’m aware that my mother was a witch.”

Likita said he was not in the village when the incident occurred.

His words: “I don’t know why the police arrested me. Besides losing my daughter, my two other children are ill. I’ve not even seen the body of my late child.”

Madam Okusanya gave up the ghost in the arms of her two surviving children on Monday. • Mum sells day old baby for N250,000

Mum sells day old baby for N250,000

A 22-year-old woman, Onyinyechi Osoneye, has been arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives for allegedly selling her day-old baby boy for N250,000.

She was arrested with five others by a decoy team.

The baby’s father and the suspect’s mother, Mrs. Joy Osoneye, who were allegedly involved in the deal, are on the run.

Osoneye was alleged to have sold the boy to a couple, Mr and Mrs Ike Nwata, through a third party, who charged them N850,000 but remitted only N250,000 to the suspect’s mother.

According to RRS, Osoneye was arrested last Wednesday, following a two-month investigation on the sale of another baby to another couple, Mr and Mrs John Chukwu of 34, Odeleye Aina Street, Okota.

Although she was said to have feigned ignorance of the deal, a post on the RRS website said she started crying when she was confronted with some facts.

She was said to have opened up during interrogation, telling detectives how her mother assisted her to conceal the pregnancy from her father, who was against her having a child out of wedlock.

According to RRS, the suspect, who claimed she sold the baby because its father denied responsibility for her pregnancy, provided other information that led to the smashing of the baby selling ring.

Detectives discovered that she was admitted to hospital at Ikota, Lekki-Ajah Expressway, on March 1, where a midwife, Mrs. Glory Ehinmi, 35, delivered her of the baby.

Ehinmi, RRS said, transferred the baby to Peculiar Hospital in Orile, said to be owned by her sister, Mrs. Prisca Okocha, 45. The deal was allegedly sealed at the hospital in the suspect’s mother’s presence.

After collecting the baby, Mrs. Okocha, RRS said, contacted another woman, Mrs. Regina Anyanwu, 59, who brought the Nwatas.

Mrs. Okocha allegedly confessed to have collected N850,000 for the baby but paid Osoneye and her mother N250,000.

After taking the baby home, the Nwatas were said to have held a party to herald his arrival. Mrs Nwata was said to have pretended to be pregnant for several months before ‘delivering’ the baby.

She was said to have stayed away from her matrimonial home and only visited her husband occasionally with her ‘pregnancy’.

During interrogation, Ehinmi insisted she did Osoneye a favour, adding that she enrolled her for antenatal and fed her till the suspect was delivered of the baby.

Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent, said the child had been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs. The suspects, he said, had been transferred to the Police Gender Office in Ikeja.
