    • Army apprehend angry youths attacking Air Force personnel enforcing curfew, recover gun

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang vowed yesterday that ‘external aggressors’ troubling the state would be kept away and the perpetrators of the recent killings brought to book.

Muftwang, on an assessment tour of communities recently attacked in the Mangu Local Government Area of the state, said while there was the need to preach forgiveness and unity at a time like this, the people should be vigilant to “ward off external forces that divide us and make sure they turn our attention from productive ventures to only crisis management.”

As he spoke, the Special Military Task Force, called Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), said it had apprehended some youths of Kerang in Mangu LGA for allegedly attacking Air Force Personnel deployed to the area to enforce the 24-hour curfew in the area.

The governor, with who were top government officials and security chiefs in the state, visited Kwahaslalek village where 30 people were hacked to death in the latest wave of killings.

He commiserated with the bereaved families and the entire people of the Mangu LGA over the attack.

He asked for continuous dialogue between community leaders to resolve issues capable of causing division and violence among the residents.

He said: “I want to assure the people of Mangu local government that the government of Plateau State will do all it can to ensure that external aggressors are kept away. We are going to also ensure that criminal elements in our midst are dealt with; we will no longer tolerate such activities.

“This is the time to preach forgiveness and preach unity. It is only when we do that, that we can be vigilant to ward off external forces that divide us and make sure they turn our attention from productive ventures to only crisis management. We must not allow that to continue.

“I want to appeal to everyone; if anyone ever thought of giving cover to any criminal, it is time to end that and expose them. It is time to love your brothers more than your friends who are criminals. I plead with us, particularly to the Mwaghavul nation, we have always held ourselves as brothers, even if we are of different faith, we must not lose that sense of brotherhood.”

He warned drug merchants ruining the lives of youths in the state, saying: “Let me sound a word of warning to those who are making huge money from the sale of drugs and narcotics.

“We will come after you very soon because you cannot continue to destroy our young people and go free. By the grace of God, we will put up a strategic plan to contain the menace of drug addiction in the state.”

The Mishkaham Mwaghavul, John Hirse commended the governor for coming to sympathise with the people and urged him to remain focused despite the deliberate attempt to distract him.

He saw no reason for the latest round of destruction.

He said: “It is better to sit down and dialogue than take the law into your hands. We have been living in peace, doing business together.

“We don’t know what brought about this. There is nothing more important than peace.”

He said the violence was designed to distract the governor from “your focus to bring good governance to the people.”

The governor also visited the internally displaced persons who survived the recent attacks in the area.

He assured them that government would do all within its power to return them to their homes.

Following the visit, the governor relaxed the 24-hour curfew earlier imposed on Mangu LGA in the aftermath of the killings.

His Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, said the curfew would now run from 4 pm to 8 am daily until further notice.

He said the review followed an improvement in the security situation in the local government area after strategic engagements with community leaders across faiths and ethnic groups.

    OPSH arrests suspects, recovers weapons

Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), in a statement, said it was shocked by the act of aggression of the Kerang youth on troops who were supposed to protect their community.

It said: “This attack, which included firing at the troops’ patrol vehicles, posed a significant threat to the safety of both the military personnel and the community at large.

“During the subsequent operation to apprehend the attackers, the military successfully recovered a significant arsenal of weapons.

“The seized items include one AK-47 rifle, four locally fabricated automatic rifles, one locally made mortar bomb launcher, seven empty shells of 7.62mm, one empty shell of a cartridge, one pistol magazine, 36 Boris, three rounds of 7.62mm, and seven rounds of 9 x 19mm.

“The Nigerian Military denounces this reckless and unlawful act of violence in the strongest possible terms. Such behavior not only endangers the lives of our dedicated troops but also undermines the peace and stability of the entire community.

“We are committed to upholding the rule of law and will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the peace and security of the region. We urge the peace loving people of Kerang and all citizens to refrain from engaging in acts of violence and to respect the authority of the state.

“The imposition of the 24-hour curfew was a necessary measure to safeguard the lives and property of all residents and it is essential that it be adhered to for the collective well-being of the community.”

Mutfwang urges NIPPS to utilise research for national development

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has urged the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, to make practicable its research to enhance National Development.

Mutfwang gave the charge, when he received the management of the institute on a courtesy visit yesterday, in Jos.

The governor, who noted that because of the various academic works being undertaken by the NIPSS, there was need for such materials to be harnessed and utilised for the common good of the state and the country.

He charged the institute to remain resolute in maintaining its academic excellence.

“I have had personal periods of engagement with some of the participants at NIPSS, and I know that the quality of training there is of great value to national development.

“I therefore want to urge you to continue to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence in research, we want to also see how some of the researches you have done over the years can be of importance and help to us.

“We therefore would want to leverage on some of the studies you have conducted in the past beyond theory, and see how we can practicalise some of these findings you have come up with over the years.

“We believe that a constructive engagement with NIPPS would help us to improve because at the moment, there is no training institution on the plateau that adequately trains our civil servants,” he said.

The governor, who reiterated the importance of the state benefitting from the institute as its host, urged the management to consider helping the state revamp its civil service through trainings.

“Let me make this passionate plea, since we are the host, we will be making this plea that at least an extra consideration be given to Plateau State for the Senior Executive Course, let’s have the portion of the host, we shouldn’t be getting everything equal with everybody.

“We need to see a lot of our own people come out, not just with the badge, we want to see them actually benefit from being equipped at NIPSS.

“There is no gain saying that the civil service is the engine room of government, and if it is not functioning well, then certainly government cannot function well.

“So we will be coming very soon to request a Needs Assessment of our Civil Services, on what we need to do to reposition it for the future,” he said

Mutfwang also called on the leadership of the Institute to inform the state of any employment opportunities available in the school, to help its teeming youth population gain employment.

While expressing regrets over the security challenges confronting the institute, Mutfwang pledged to take urgent steps to tackle the situation.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, the Director General (DG) of the Institute, reaffirmed his allegiance and support to the growth and development of the state, assuring the governor of his unalloyed cooperation in moving the state forward.

Omotayo also appealed to the governor to assist in the settling the land dispute between NIPSS and the natives, which had lingered for too long.

“I thank you for this opportunity to come see you, we believe this will be the beginning of a new partnership that will be mutually beneficial, both to the National Institute, and to the people of Plateau State.

“I want to reiterate sir, I have personal interest, that while I am D-G, every of the indices by which you measure development, changes for the positive when it comes to Plateau State

“I told myself that this time when I see the governor, I will let him know that as NIPPS, we are not asking for money, we are not asking for anything, but that we offer our self and service to the state.

“At NIPPS we have the expertise, we can extend the goodwill of our domain partners to support the governmental efforts of Mr Governor in the state.

“As regards the contention over the land we occupy, as a person, I always feel saddened that if it is indeed true that they were not compensated many years back.

“Somehow, someway, we should find a way to bring justice to them” Omotayo said.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Friday, disclosed that his state would be seeking both legal and political ways of resolving the crisis that has attended the sacking of lawmakers from the state.

The Court of Appeal had last November, sacked 16 members of the Plateau State House of Assembly, five members of the House of Representatives, and two senators, all of whom vied for the offices on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), over a pre-election matter.

The state House of Assembly is scheduled to resume next week with fears being expressed that the eight Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members still remaining after the Appeal Court sacked others, may not inaugurate the new members having already met the required threshold for a quorum.

However, responding to a question over the development, Governor Mutfwang, who said he was at the Villa on a thank you visit to President Bola Tinubu for not interfering in the functions of the judiciary and allowing the courts to deliver justice as they see fit, said all possible options are being considered.

“Yes, I think this is an ongoing discussion and I can’t tell you anything now, because we are looking at all the possible solutions, legally, politically or otherwise, to ensure that… My interest is to have a peaceful state where I can focus on development and governance. And therefore, we want to ensure that we reduce all areas of friction as much as we can.

“I want to particularly thank Nigerians for the interest they have shown in the Plateau situation. We do not take it for granted. And I believe that out of the Plateau situation, our jurisprudence will be enriched and justice will find sure footing in Nigeria are the future. That’s the most I can say,” he said.

Asked why he was at the Villa, Mutfwang said “I came to see the President purposely to say a very big thank you to Mr. President, for keeping democracy alive in Nigeria.

“As you all know, I went through a very protracted legal battle and I’ve said it openly and I am repeating that the Nigerian president is a powerful president. And if he does not exercise restraint in the exercise of his power, he can intrude into the judicial arena and the judiciary will not be allowed to perform its function.

“In my case and several others, I’m sure, we can attest to the fact that Mr. President allowed the judiciary to perform its functions as it should thereby guaranteeing its independence.

“I, therefore, must come to thank him for exercising that restraint because those who wanted to pervert justice also brought tremendous pressure on him to see how he could interfere, but I must put it that Mr. President choosing not to interfere is a credit to his statesmanship, is a credit to his credentials as a sound democrat, and this is the only way we can ensure that our institutions mature to the point where they can guarantee not only the survival of democracy but also ensure that institutions should be able to survive, develop and outlived individuals”, he said

He also disclosed that he brought President Tinubu up to speed with the security situation, especially the Christmas period attacks on the Plateau.

He said: “This is why I came principally to say thank you to the President. And of course, you know Mr. President will not meet me and not ask about the security situation on the Plateau. And I also give them an update.

“Things are relatively calm at the moment. The security agencies are on the pursuit of the perpetrators of this dastardly act that we experienced during the Christmas period and we’re doing our best together with the federal government and international donor partners to be able to mitigate the pain of those families who lost their loved ones, and also those who are internally displaced.

“So we’re doing our best and we’re also ensuring that we step up our security surveillance to prevent further occurrence of this kind of needless bloodshed,” he said.
