    NEMA to deliver relief items to Plateau as attacks displace 1,820, claim 52 lives 

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it has commenced assessment of the communities affected by attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

    The assessment is conducted in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Chairman of Bokkos LGA to ascertain the camp situation and provide urgent humanitarian support to the victims.

    According to NEMA, the attacks impacted Ruwi, Hurti, Tadai, Gwande, Manguna, and Dafo villages.

    NEMA stated that the attack has left over 1,820 individuals displaced, and led to the establishment of three camps in Daffo, Hurti, and Gwande.

    It added that not less than 52 persons have killed between 27th March and 2nd April 2025.

    Update by NEMA also revealed that five persons are still missing in Hurti, two critically injured receiving treatment at Plateau Specialist Hospital, while over 20 others are admitted at Cottage Hospital, Bokkos Town.

    NEMA stated that an assessment teams are currently on ground in the impacted areas to evaluate the extent of the damage and identify the immediate needs of affected populations. 

    The agency also revealed that arrangements are being finalised for the delivery of relief materials approved by the federal government, in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu, to provide swift humanitarian assistance to the victims.

    It added that a team from NEMA led by the Director General, Zubaida Umar is en route Plateau State to reinforce ongoing efforts by its zonal office in Jos. 

    The visit is aimed at coordinating relief interventions and ensure an efficient and timely response.

    The member representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency of Cross River State in the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Joseph Bassey, has called for improved funding and procurement of modern operational equipment for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

    Bassey, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness, made this appeal during the agency’s budget defense at the National Assembly in Abuja.

    The lawmaker emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation in safeguarding lives and property. 

    He noted that without proper planning and resources, Nigeria risks being unprepared for emergencies.

    “Disaster preparedness is vital to protecting lives and properties. The National Emergency Management Agency plays a critical role in this, but its effectiveness is hampered by insufficient funding and resources,” Bassey stated.

    He highlighted the need for the federal government to prioritize disaster management beyond reactive palliative measures. 

    According to him, NEMA urgently requires modern air and land ambulances, staff insurance, and advanced operational equipment to respond effectively to emergencies.

    Bassey expressed concern over Nigeria’s absence from the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction Rating, describing it as a glaring gap in the country’s disaster management framework. 

    To address this, he proposed allocating at least one trillion Naira annually from the national budget’s contingency provisions to NEMA.

    “This investment is essential for building a robust disaster management system capable of protecting citizens from the devastating impacts of disasters. 

    “By committing these resources, we can prevent and mitigate disasters, save lives, and reduce long-term costs,” he added.

    The lawmaker stressed that disasters often strike without warning, making adequate preventive measures indispensable. 

    He urged the government to act swiftly to ensure NEMA is well-equipped to handle emergencies efficiently.

    Bassey’s recommendations reflect growing calls for the government to take proactive steps toward improving disaster management infrastructure in Nigeria.

    The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, has called for proper crowd management during the distribution of charity to prevent stampedes and avoidable loss of lives.

    Her appeal follows recent incidents of stampedes across the country, notably at Ibadan, Oyo State; Okija, Anambra State and Abuja.

    The incident has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries in the last four days.

    She expressed concerns that such tragic outcomes undermine the goodwill behind charity events, turning acts of kindness into sources of grief due to poor planning and crowd control.

    While sympathizing with the families of the deceased and those injured, she urged organizers of similar events to engage professionals and seek the support of security agencies to manage crowds effectively.

    She emphasized the importance of ensuring safety during such activities to prevent recurring tragedies.

    The Director General NEMA revealed that all Zonal Territorial and Operations offices of the agency have been activated to respond to emergencies and provide support to first responders in the area of traffic management due to the usual increase of traffic during the Yuletide and end of the year festivities.

    Three of the passengers aboard the ill-fated boat that capsized in River Benue, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, were yesterday confirmed dead.

    In an update, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said that 50 persons have been rescued, while 23 other passengers remain uncounted for.

    “49 persons were rescued; one was able to swim to safety, while 23 persons remain unaccounted for,” NEMA’s Media Office said yesterday.

    The boat was carrying 76 passengers when the driver, who was unaware of a submerged tree in the river, accidentally navigated into it, thereby causing the boat to tip off and capsize.

    According to NEMA, the victims were traders from Odenyi Magaji and other communities in Nasarawa State.

    The media office said: “The passengers were said to be returning home from the Ocholonya Market, a major economic hub that draws traders from several communities in Agatu and neighbouring states, including Nasarawa State.

    “Besides the 49 rescued passengers, one of the victims managed to sw im to safety while 23 persons are still missing. Three bodies have been recovered so far. Most of the boat passengers were from Odenyi Magaji and other communities of Nasarawa State.”

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that 50 persons have been rescued and are safe following a boat mishap in Benue State.

    The accident occurred around 7:00 pm on Saturday along River Benue in Agatu local government area and has claimed three lives so far.

    According to NEMA’s media office, 49 persons were rescued, one was able to swim to safety, and 23 persons remain unaccounted for.

    The boat was carrying 76 passengers when the driver, unaware of a submerged tree in the river, accidentally navigated into it, causing the boat to tip off and capsize.

    NEMA stated that the victims were traders from Odenyi Magaji and other communities in Nasarawa State.

    “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is working with the Benue State Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders, including the local authorities and divers, to expedite the ongoing search and rescue operations to trace the remaining missing passengers.”

    NEMA said it has established contacts with the Nigerian Navy to provide more support for the search and rescue.

    Fire outbreak: NEMA begins nationwide sensitization of tanker drivers, market associations, others

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has launched a nationwide fire sensitization campaign to prevent cases of fire outbreaks during harmattan season.

    The agency also said it would engage tanker drivers, market associations, local businesses, and other stakeholders following the rising cases of fire outbreaks.

    For tanker drivers, NEMA said they will receive essential training on fire safety, including preventive practices and emergency response techniques. 

    NEMA said the initiative is targeted at reducing the risk of fire outbreaks during the harmattan season by engaging key stakeholders and empowering communities with preventive measures and response strategies.

    The campaign, implemented through NEMA’s Zonal Territorial and Operations Offices, is conducted in collaboration with the Federal and State Fire Services.

    The agency stated that the key component of the initiative is the training of Emergency Management Volunteers (EMVs) at the grassroots level.

    According to NEMA, the volunteers will be equipped with practical knowledge and skills to prevent and manage fire emergencies, addressing the increasing prevalence of fire incidents during the dry harmattan period.

    The Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, highlighted the urgency of proactive measures during the harmattan season, which often poses heightened fire risks.

    She emphasized that the campaign aims to promote a culture of disaster prevention to protect lives, property, and livelihoods. 

    Umar said the nationwide sensitization effort is a reflection of the commitment by NEMA to empower communities and work collaboratively with critical stakeholders such as tanker drivers, market leaders, and grassroots volunteers. 

    The DG NEMA also underscored the importance of collective responsibility in adhering to disaster warnings, preparations, and response mechanisms to mitigate the loss of lives and property.

    She said the initiative by NEMA reaffirms its dedication to building resilient communities through prevention, training, and collaborative action.

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has handed over 18,653 bags of rice to six states affected by the recent flood.

    The bags of rice were donated by the Bank of Industry (BoI) and they are expected to be distributed to Imo, Benue, Plateau, Jigawa, Katsina, and Zamfara states.

    The director general of NEMA, Zubaida Umar said the support from the bank would support the ongoing efforts of the Federal and State Governments in mitigating the impact of the ongoing flood and other disasters in the country

    Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during the symbolic handing over of the items to beneficiary states, Umar also disclosed that 1,696 cartons of humanitarian relief aid donated by the Government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be handed over to ten states.

     Umar said: “We are handing over 18, 653 bags of 10kg rice donated by the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the 50 tons (1,696 cartons) of humanitarian relief aid donated by the Government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support the ongoing efforts of the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria in mitigating the impact of the on-going flood and other disasters in the country.

     “The donations of relief materials by both BOI and the Government of UAE symbolize the manifestation of deep sympathy for people severely impacted by disasters on the one hand and a long-standing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the UAE on the other.

     “The gestures further entrench the essence of multi-stakeholder and multi-national approach to disaster management in global perspective.”

     Highlighting how the items would be distributed, she said: “BOI donated about 18,779 bags of 10kg rice to NEMA. The rice would be shared with six (6) States to assist internally displaced persons in IDP Camps in those States. The selection of the beneficiary States was based on the number of IDPs in the state and the urgency and severity of the needs of the affected persons.

     “The States are Imo State 3,500 bags, Benue State 3,000 bags, Plateau State 1,669 bags, Jigawa State 3,000 bags, Katsina State 3,850 bags and Zamfara State 3,634 bags.”

     The agency said 10,484 bags will be picked up from NEMA’s Kano warehouse, while 8,169 bags will be picked up from its Abuja warehouse.

     Umar added that the 50 tons of humanitarian relief aid by the Government of UAE to assist persons affected by the recent flooding is made up of 1,696 cartons and each carton contains 20 assorted food items.

     She added that the donation from UAE would be shared with 10 States considered highly impacted by the 2024 flood.

     The beneficiary States are: “Borno State 256 cartons, Bauchi Se 160 cartons, Sokoto 160 cartons, Adamawa 160 cartons, Kano 160 cartons, Bayelsa 160 cartons, Ondo 160 cartons, Abia 160 cartons, Rivers 160 cartons and Enugu State 160 cartons”.

     She thanked the donors and urged the beneficiary States to ensure that the donated items are judiciously and transparently distributed to persons affected by flood and other disasters to mitigate their sufferings.

    Reps urge NEMA to probe earth tremors in Abuja

    The House of Representatives has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to conduct a thorough investigation of recent earth tremors in Abuja.

    This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent importance by the House Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, on Wednesday, September 25, at plenary.

    Chinda raised concerns about the unusual seismic activities in the nation’s capital and urged that safety measures be developed to tackle it.

    He cited media reports and resident complaints from various districts, including the Mpape area.

    The lawmaker said Abuja is a symbol of Nigeria’s social integrity, stability, and strength, and worried about the lack of conclusive explanations for the tremors.

    He said there were growing fears among residents that the tremors could be precursors to more severe seismic events, potentially causing significant structural damage to the FCT’s infrastructure.

    The Minority Leader emphasised that despite ongoing investigations, there is yet to be any conclusive explanation for these occurrences.

    He noted that Abuja is not generally known for being a seismic hotspot.

    Chinda said this underscores the need for proactive measures to prevent potential disasters.

    The House particularly expressed concerns about the possible damage to critical infrastructure, including office buildings, roads, and essential public facilities, which could lead to loss of life, displacement of residents, as well as severe economic losses.

    It mandated its committees on the Federal Capital Territory, Environment, and Emergency Disaster Preparedness to investigate the cause of the tremors and propose necessary legislative actions.

    Waterborne diseases loom in Borno, NEMA warns

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned of a likely outbreak of water-borne diseases following the flooding incident in Maiduguri, Borno state.

    The director-general of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, has also deployed search and rescue personnel and facilities to strengthen the ongoing rescue of Maiduguri residents who are trapped in their homes.

    To minimize the outbreak of the disease, the agency, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by the Head of the Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, said it has begun providing safe, clean water through its water tanker to the displaced residents impacted by the flood, including Bakassi camp.

    The statement reads: “The Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, has activated the deployment of additional search and rescue personnel and facilities to strengthen the ongoing rescue of Maiduguri residents that are trapped in their homes by the devastating flood disaster in the city.

    “In addition to the search and rescue operation, the Agency, through a rapid assessment of the situation, has warned against the likelihood of water-borne epidemic that may result from flood contamination of households’ water. In view of this, the Agency has been providing safe, clean water by using its water tanker to the temporary shelter provided for the displaced residents impacted by the flood, including Bakassi camp.”

    On other efforts made, the statement reads: “From the onset of the flooding that started last weekend from the heavy rains in the city and the subsequent deluge from the overflowing of Alau dam, the Agency through its North East zonal office has been working together with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders in the conduct of search and rescue as well as carrying out rapid assessment for appropriate assistance to the impacted persons.”

    Northeast, northwest worst hit by flood, says NEMA

    Data from the National Emergency Operations Centre of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has indicated that floods have had the most impact on the northeast and northwest regions of the country.

    The data also revealed that the southwest has the lowest number of affected and displaced persons.

    The northeast ranks the highest with 364,766 affected persons, 213,871 displaced persons, 82 deaths, 34,187 affected houses, and 82,588 affected farmlands.

    The northwest currently has 291,543 affected persons, 107,386 displaced persons, 114 deaths, 35,871 affected houses, and 30,739 affected farmlands.

    North-central so far has 59,687 affected persons, 37,703 displaced persons, 6 deaths, 13,313 affected houses, and 11, 255 farmlands destroyed.

    The Southeast has 27,244 persons affected, 17,523 displaced persons, 2 deaths, 6,805 affected houses, and 1,053 affected farmlands.

    South-south has 33,132 affected persons, 7,567 displaced persons, 25 deaths, 503 houses destroyed, and 170 farmlands affected.

    The Southwest has recorded the lowest impact, with 32,940 affected persons, 2,189 displaced persons, and 3,812 affected houses.

    According to the agency, southwest has not recorded any deaths, and no farmland has been affected.

    Overall, the flood has affected 809,312 persons in 29 states across 172 local government areas of the country.

    The number of displaced persons for the entire country is 386,239, 94, 491 houses affected, 229 lives lost, 2,390 injuries sustained, and 125,805 farmlands affected.
