EPL: Newcastle held to goalless draw by 10-man Villa

Newcastle failed to score without wantaway striker Alexander Isak as they were held by 10-man Aston Villa.

Villa played the final 24 minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men after Ezri Konsa was dismissed but with Isak missing – as he tries to force a move to Liverpool – the Magpies were unable to find a winner.

Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon wasted their best chances during a dominant first half.

Debutant Marco Bizot made a fine save to deny new £55m winger Elanga inside three minutes before Gordon planted a free header over.

The forward, playing centrally in place of Isak, also tested Bizot as the Magpies failed to make their superiority count.

Passive Villa failed to have a shot in the first half – the first home team to suffer that fate in a Premier League game since Fulham, against Manchester City in May 2024 – but they emerged after the break with renewed vigour.

Boubacar Kamara headed at Nick Pope while Ollie Watkins also shot straight at the goalkeeper but Konsa’s red card – for pulling back Gordon as he ran clear – left the hosts to focus on clinging on to a point.

Newcastle turn to Wissa after ending Ekitike pursuit

Newcastle are expected to accelerate their interest in Brentford striker Yoane Wissa in the next 24 hours after withdrawing from their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike.

The Magpies want to sign a new centre-forward but their £70m offer to Eintracht Frankfurt for 23-year-old Frenchman Ekitike was rejected.

Liverpool have also targeted Ekitike as a possible alternative to their first-choice target, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

And with Newcastle adamant Isak is not for sale, the Anfield club are now expected to step up their interest in Ekitike.

Sources have told BBC Sport that with Newcastle’s efforts to land Ekitike hitting complications in the last 24 hours, the Magpies have turned their attentions to Wissa.

Brentford attacker Wissa, 28, is also a target for Tottenham and Nottingham Forest

It is understood Newcastle’s interest in the Democratic Republic of Congo international is less advanced than that of those clubs as things stand, but it is now set to ramp up as the club from north east England increase their efforts to sign a striker.

Brentford are adamant they do not want to lose Bryan Mbeumo, who is coveted by Manchester United, and Wissa this summer – but Wissa is open to leaving the Bees for a chance to play in the Champions League.

He has scored 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances since joining from Lorient in 2021.

Newcastle United have agreed a £55m fee with Nottingham Forest for Sweden winger Anthony Elanga.

Sources have told BBC Sport the deal could be completed this week.

Newcastle are seeking to strengthen their attacking options as they prepare for their return to the Champions League following a fifth-placed Premier League finish last season.

The 23-year-old scored six goals and produced 11 assists for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side during their successful 2024-25 Premier League season.

Newcastle have yet to pay a fee for a player this summer, with 18-year-old Spanish winger Antonio Cordero the only new arrival on a free transfer from Malaga.

Forest are believed to have paid £15m to sign Elanga from Manchester United on a five-year-deal in 2023.

He had arrived at Old Trafford at the age of 12 and made 55 appearances before moving to the City Ground.

  • Ipswich relegated after defeat to Newcastle

Ipswich relegated after defeat to Newcastle

Ipswich have been relegated from the Premier League following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday.

The result, their 21st league defeat of the season, means the Tractor Boys remain in 18th place and 15 points away from safety with only four games to go.

The club follow Leicester and Southampton back to the Championship after lasting just one season in the top flight.

Ipswich travelled to Newcastle needing a win and 17th-placed West Ham to suffer defeat at Brighton.

West Ham were beaten 3-2 late on by the Seagulls, but Ipswich fell short at St James’ Park with 10 men after Ben Johnson was sent off in the first half.

Ipswich’s fairytale rise to the Premier League had captured the hearts of football romantics after their successive promotions from League One and the Championship.

Head coach Kieran McKenna, 38, had earned plaudits for Ipswich’s attacking style during their surge up the divisions after his appointment in 2021.

But the former Manchester United assistant coach was unable to preserve Ipswich’s top-flight status.

“We’ve been through it the last few weeks, we knew it was pretty likely. At the end, we have fallen short, but it’s not for lack of effort,” McKenna said.

Manchester City open the weekend at home to Crystal Palace at 12:30 PM tomorrow. Despite dropping points against United, City is still within touching distance of the top four. A win at the Etihad, paired with slip-ups elsewhere, could see them move back into Champions League contention.

EPL: Isak scores twice as Newcastle sink Southampton

Alexander Isak scored twice as Newcastle came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Magpies were 1-0 down after Jan Bednarek’s early header but, after Isak won and converted a penalty, the Sweden striker netted a second just four minutes later with a curled finish.

Isak’s quickfire double invigorated Eddie Howe’s team and, after half-time, Sandro Tonali added a third to put the result beyond doubt.

Newcastle are now back in the Premier League’s top four, before Chelsea’s game against Manchester City later on Saturday, while Southampton remain rooted the the foot of the table.

Howe said that his side were fatigued in last week’s 4-1 home defeat by Bournemouth and the Magpies started sluggishly at St Mary’s.

Bednarek rose high to head James Bree’s cross beyond Martin Dubravka, rewarding Ivan Juric’s team for a positive start.

But after the visitors were awarded a penalty for Joe Aribo’s foul on Isak, the in-form forward converted from the spot to restore parity.

Isak nonchalantly finished from Jacob Murphy’s pinpoint pass moments later, as Howe’s side seized control.

Tonali netted early on in the second half, as the Magpies dominated, with Murphy striking the post and Isak being denied a hat-trick by Alex McCarthy – in goal for Southampton with Aaron Ramsdale injured.

Matheus Fernandes looked to have set up a grandstand finish with a late strike but it was ruled out for offside, as Newcastle took all three points back to Tyneside.

EPL: Kluivert hits hat-trick as Bournemouth end Newcastle’s winning run

Justin Kluivert scored a hat-trick as Bournemouth claimed a thoroughly deserved victory at St James’ Park to stretch their unbeaten Premier League run to 10 matches and wreck Newcastle’s own nine-match winning streak.

The Magpies were hoping to set a new club record of 10 straight victories in all competitions, but struggled to replicate the form that had them tipped as title challengers.

Bournemouth made the much brighter start and took a deserved lead when Kluivert coolly steered Antoine Semenyo’s cutback into the far corner.

Newcastle equalised with their first real opportunity as Bruno Guimaraes rose highest to nod Lewis Hall’s corner past Kepa Arrizabalaga, who failed to keep the header out despite getting a hand to the ball.

But the Cherries remained on top and led again, courtesy of another composed Kluivert finish, which came after Guimaraes had lost possession just outside his own box.

The visitors thought they had made it 3-1 when Dango Ouattara prodded home from close range shortly after the hour mark, but the video assistant referee (VAR) spotted that Guimaraes’ clearance had gone out of play moments earlier and a corner was awarded.

David Brooks was denied by a sprawling Martin Dubravka save, but Kluivert completed his treble with a spectacular drive in to the far corner following a poor Anthony Gordon pass.

Milos Kerkez rubbed more salt into Newcastle’s wounds in added time, sending a fierce left-footed drive into the far corner to the delight of the Cherries’ 1,700 travelling fans.

Bournemouth are now just one point behind the fourth-placed Magpies in the table and will end the day in sixth if Aston Villa fail to beat Arsenal in Saturday’s late game.

EPL: Isak scores again as Newcastle beat Tottenham

Alexander Isak continued his magnificent scoring run as Newcastle came from behind to inflict another home defeat on Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham and stretch their winning run in all competitions to six matches.

The visitors came into Saturday’s Premier League game in scintillating form but fell behind after just three minutes when Pedro Porro’s in-swinging delivery was headed in by Dominic Solanke.

However, Anthony Gordon restored parity two minutes later, firing low past Spurs’ debutant goalkeeper Brandon Austin into the far corner in front of watching England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Spurs were adamant Joelinton should have been penalised for handball in the build-up to Gordon’s goal, but the officials deemed that the contact with Lucas Bergvall’s pass was accidental and that the Brazilian’s arm was in a natural position.

Isak dragged a Jacob Murphy cross off target shortly after the half-hour mark but made no mistake from a similar position moments later, slotting home after Radu Dragusin had deflected another Murphy delivery into his path.

The Swede becomes the third Newcastle player to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches, after Alan Shearer in 1996 and Joe Willock in 2021.

Tottenham improved after the break and almost equalised 10 minutes into the second half, but Brennan Johnson struck the woodwork from the tightest of angles after Martin Dubravka had kept out Pape Sarr’s effort from outside the box.

Second-half substitute James Maddison curled an effort narrowly wide of the far post and Sergio Reguilon lashed a shot off target late on, but there was no way back for Spurs as Postecoglou’s team slumped to a fifth home league defeat of the campaign. BBC

EPL: Isak scores as Arsenal drop points at Newcastle

Alexander Isak scored the only goal as Arsenal dropped points in the Premier League against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The Swede’s 12th-minute header came after the Gunners failed to clear their lines and Anthony Gordon sent a sumptuous ball into the area.

Arsenal had started the game well but once Isak found the net they struggled to get a handle on proceedings and lacked creativity in the final third.

EPL: Brighton beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park

Danny Welbeck’s first-half goal proved decisive as Brighton condemned Newcastle to their first Premier League defeat at home since January.

The result lifts the Seagulls up to fifth in the table with the Magpies remaining in eighth.

Brighton had spent most of the opening period defending when Welbeck’s quick thinking made the difference.

The former England forward, who turns 34 next month, played a clever one-two with Georginio Rutter before placing the ball in the bottom right corner with the visitors’ first effort on goal of the afternoon.

Welbeck, who was withdrawn on a stretcher late on after appearing to injure his back, has now scored five goals in eight appearances in the top flight this term.

However, Brighton’s victory was also down to some resilient defending and profligate finishing from the hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side carved out several promising openings with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon both going close but they were unable to find a way past visiting goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
