  • NEMA takes proactive steps to check flooding in South-East communities

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has taken pro-active steps to check flooding, which has been aggravating the menace of erosion in communities in the South-East geopolitical zone.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the zone has been experiencing heavy and regular rainfall in the past one month, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The Zonal Co-ordinator of NEMA, Mr Martins Udeinya, told NAN in Enugu on Thursday that the pro-active steps were necessary to mitigate the devastating effects of flooding in the area.

Udeinya said that the agency had officially written to flood-prone communities in the zone to alert them of the potential dangers and sensitise them to the need to clear their waterways and drainage systems.

He noted that the agency was currently working with state governments in the zone to clear the silt and dirt blocking the drainage systems of major cities and towns.

“Apart from the letters, NEMA, in conjunction with the leadership of the communities, planned to meet the people personally, so as to relay the implications of flooding to them.

“We will be working, in collaboration with other related and relevant agencies, to get the message down to the people.

“NEMA and its partners would be conveying the message to the people in the zone through open forums, distribution of flyers and other means of communication, which were tailored to reach the rural people.

“We will visit at least three communities, which had recorded severe cases of flooding, in each state in the zone,’’ he said.

The NEMA boss said that the agency would organise flood sensitisation campaigns in riverine communities along the River Niger, River Omambala and in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State.

NAN recalls that NiMet had predicted early onset of rainfall as well as early cessation of rainfall in many neighbourhoods across Nigeria in its 2017 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP).

  • Flood imminent in parts of Ogun – Govt

Flood imminent in parts of Ogun – Govt

Ogun State Government on Wednesday warned that some parts of the state are prone to flooding this year and advised residents to adopt safety measures by desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Bolaji Oyeleye who raised the alarm at a press briefing in Abeokuta, the State capital, said the 2017 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicates that Ogun State would experience “above normal rain fall”.

Other states predicted to be affected by flooding these years, Oyeleye added,  are Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger, Kwara, Oyo and Adamawa.

Relying on data from NiMet, he listed Ogun major cities to experience heavy rain fall this year to include Abeokuta with 242 days of 1,295mm rain fall, Ewekoro, 229 days of 2075mm and Ijebu-Ode, 245 days of 1,526mm.

Other cities are, Ikenne with 240 days of 1,742mm, Ipokia, 247 days of 1872 days, Otta, 243 days of 1810 days and Sagamu with 240 days of 1753mm rain fall.

According to him, NiMet prediction also revealed that extended rain fall between three to eight days is expected in the cited States.

The Commissioner advised residents especially those living close to canals,  drainages and other flood planes to desist from obstructing water pathways with refuse.

Oyeleye explained that there could also be a heavy release of water from the two dams –  Oyan and Ikere Gorge dams, in the State and further aggravate flooding situation.

He disclosed that the NiMet has also predicted that many Nigerians would likely experience “above danger heat stress this year due to the combination of heat and humidity.”

“The impact is that exposure to excessive heat for too long could cause heat stress which may, in turn, lead to several illnesses collectively called hyperthermia,” he said.

Also, the Coordinator of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Aremu Adebakin said the agency had started sensitising residents on likely occurrence of flooding and the need to adopt safety measures.

Adebakin also urged people living in dilapidated buildings to renovate them or evacuate as soon as possible while others living close to river banks were asked to leave home for the period of the rainy season to avoid loss of lives and property.

“People living in dilapidated buildings or near river banks should move and not wait for disasters to strike and expect the government to come to their aid,” he said.

  • 2017: NiMet predicts early rainfall, early cessation

2017: NiMet predicts early rainfall, early cessation

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted that Nigerians will experience shorter rainfall period in 2017.

With the prediction, the agency also noted that there would be early cessation of rainfall in many parts of the country.

According to the Agency, food production would be less than normal due to shorter growing season length over large parts of the country.

This was disclosed in Abuja yesterday during the public presentation of the 2017 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction which was unveiled by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

The minister urged relevant stakeholders to take advantage of the prediction and plan ahead.

Giving an overview of the prediction, the Director General of the Agency, Prof. Sani Mashi said: “2017 is expected to be a unique year as the country is likely to experience a wetter start and a drier end of the season

“The annual rainfall amount predicted over the country in 2017 is expected to range from 400mm in the far north to about 3100mm in the coastal areas of the Niger Delta while the cessation dates of the rains in 2017 are predicted to start from around 4th October and reach the coastal states around 25th December.

Continuing, NiMet boss said: “Rains might be heavy at the beginning but towards the end, the season will be drier which means that generally, rainfall will be below normal in some States including Yobe, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Kogi, northern Cross River, Enugu, Imo, Abia and some of the coastal areas.

“In some States, we are predicting that the rainfall will be above normal. In and around states like Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Adamawa.

“Aside these two categories, we are expecting that the rest of the state will experience normal rainfall.

Also, the Agency predicted that Katsina State will experience earliest cessation of rain.

“By October 4th, rain is expected to cease in Katsina state.”

On the socio-economic implication of the prediction, Mashi said: “food production is expected to be less than normal because we are predicting that the growing season is going to be shorter over large parts of the country.

“Since the rainfall will cease early, food production system has to be aligned properly so that crops that mature early can be planted”.

On the health implication, he said the shorter than normal rainfall in some parts may lead to water stress and outbreak of diseases that are related to heat which can also affect livestock.

Looking on the bright side of the prediction, the agency said: ” the above than normal rainfall that will be experienced in some States will lead to additional water in reservoirs and this can be a good sign as far as power generation is concerned because it means the potential for hydropower generation will be higher.”
