  • JUST IN: Why we proscribed Shi’ites, by FG

The Presidency on Sunday explained the proscription of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) popularly called Shi’ites was to stop the spread of its terrorist activities.

The development, it said, has nothing to do with banning the larger numbers of peaceful and law- abiding Shiites in the country from practicing their religion.

It said instead it was to discourage wanton violence, murder and willful destruction of public and private property.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Sunday evening said contrary to the claim by IMN that it had been stopped from practicing its religion President Buhari’s administration has not banned Shiites from observing their five daily prayers and going to Mecca to perform the Holy pilgrimage.

“Their position is blatantly false and deceptive. The IMN is deliberately changing the narrative in order to gain sympathy and divert the attention of the world from its terrorist activities, including attacking soldiers, killing policemen and a youth corps member, destroying government ambulances and public property, consistently defying authority of the state.

“The Presidency notes that the banned organisation was taken over by extremists who didn’t believe in peaceful protests and instead employed violence and arson, driving fear and undermining the rights of others and constituted authority.

“The Presidency agrees that the constitution protects freedom of worship, but not to the detriment of the society, especially where such freedom harms others, and breaks law and order.

“The Presidency insists that such criminal behavior and disregard for rights of others and human life will not be tolerated by any responsible government, explaining that everywhere in the world protesters operate within legal boundaries and conduct themselves peacefully without molesting others, or engaging in murder and killing of security personnel or destroying public and private property.

“The Presidency regrets that despite all efforts by the government and other well-meaning Nigerians to make the IMN militants to see reason and abandon violence, such appeals fell on deaf ears as they killed, maimed and destroyed willfully, constituting daily nuisance to workers, commuters and other innocent citizens.”

The presidential aide added: “Having defied appeals to operate peacefully, and given their seeming determination to destabilize the country, the government had to act before the situation goes out of control, after admonishing many times over that people should not use religion to perpetuate lawlessness.

“We are fighting lawlessness and criminality and not pursuing a policy of discrimination against any group.

“You cannot be in court while at the same time engaging in violent protests, molesting people and inflicting pains on others, which includes taking innocent lives.”

  • Stakeholders to Buhari: Save Kogi now

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Kogi State at the weekend urged President Muhammadu Buhari to save the state by withdrawing support for the second term ambition of Governor Yahaya Bello.

The stakeholders, under the auspices of Kogi Emancipation Movement (KEM), urged the President not to release “any form of budget support” to Yahaya “between now and November when the governorship election will take place.”

They warned that the party would lose the election if it fielded Bello, because “the governor had nothing on which to anchor his second term quest.”

The group in a statement signed by its Convener, Apostle Eniola Williams, said it was “strange that Buhari and other leaders of the party at both national and state level have continued to show public support for, and even endorsement of Governor Yahaya Bello.”

According to it, Bello’s “only visible achievement is the obsolete street lights; even the revenue house that was commissioned by His Eminence, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the contractor is yet to be paid.”

The group claimed that “Contrary to a claim that Kogi State civil servants were being owed “only a few months’ salaries, the truth is that Governor Yahaya Bello does not pay workers their salaries by imposing a three-year lingering screening without end. And when he deigns to do that, he pays them in fractions and trickles. Consequently, he is owing 75 percent of state and local government genuine workers more than 40 months salaries.”

According to Williams, many Kogi civil servants “have died chasing their hard earned pay, while those who survived up to this moment are stuck between poor or little pay, or late and badly fractionalized pay.

“We therefore warn that APC will be thoroughly defeated if it fields Governor Yahaya Bello for the November 16, 2019 governorship poll in the state.

“He has done or said nothing to earn his party’s offer of right of first refusal.

“We feel strongly that the governor will not win the poll if he is fielded, but even if he could, he still should not run because of his dismal performance in his first term.”

The group cautioned President Buhari and the party hierarchy not to be deceived by Governor Bello’s assurances that he had the “tactics” to win, “such as he…deployed during the last presidential and legislative polls.”

It emphasized that “any attempt to field the incumbent governor will result in humiliating defeat for the APC as was the case in Adamawa and Bauchi States earlier in the year. “

The group urged the President, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC Chairman Adams Oshiomole, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “stalwarts from the state like Hajiya Salamatu Baiwa, Barrister Babatunde Irukera, Folasade Joseph” … to ensure that “a governor so unpopular…is not allowed to belittle the flag of the party by becoming its standard-bearer. “

The statement added: “The millions of people from Kogi are hopeless and helpless and their fate is in the hands of these people and what they do to save the state and repair their own reputation.  History and judgment await all in the future for actions or inactions.”

  • Excitement as Ayade begins asphalting of Okuku-Okpona section of 145km highway

With this development, the asphalting of the highway is now ongoing from the two sections of the road simultaneously.

Adjudged the most ambitious road project ever undertaken by any Governor, the road project cuts across the five local government areas of northern Cross River.

An indigene of the area, Mr. Joseph Odey, commended Ben Ayade for the initiative and the speed of work.

“To be honest with you, I was one of the doubting Thomases. I never believed this project will even reach the stage it is now.

“We were calling this place before, Ayade dust or power because of the dust.

“We don’t know the magic Ayade is doing because I know Cross River is no longer rich like it used to be because of the loss of the littoral status.

“He has managed to do this with other projects like the Canadian School, Reference Hospital and the Airport which he just started in Obudu,” he stated.

A motorist, Moses Awhen said the progress of work has been breathtaking.

“First of all, I want to apologize to the Governor on behalf of all of us who said one bad thing or the other against him at the commencement of this project.

“Our Governor is a Professor and we are local drivers that don’t even understand development.

“What you see here today is a miracle because if you had come here a few months back, you would have seen how we used our own mouth to condemn our brother because of this wonderful project.”

  • Six ways to win over your crush

Increased heartbeat, sweaty palms, short breaths, skipping heartbeat and butterflies in the tummy. Sound familiar? These are probably what you feel when you see your crush coming and the feelings won’t just go away!

So what are you going to do about it? Continue to struggle with the butterflies?

I have an idea. How about you just win your crush over?

Scared? Skeptical? Take a deep breath and try these tips to win your crush over:

*Make a move: When I say make a move I mean put yourself out there. Come out from within the shadows and make yourself visible to your crush. Chances are that if you keep lurking in the shadows watching your crush’s every move that is where you will remain.  Talk to your crush, invite her to an event, say hi to him from time to time. That way, you don’t remain invincible to your crush but catch your crush’s attention.

*Be attentive: Just because you have finally gotten your crush’s attention doesn’t mean you should become insensitive at the expense of your crush. Listen to what he or she says. Make mental notes and act accordingly. For example, if your crush mentions that he likes dark chocolate, it would create an impression if you get him dark chocolate the next time you see him. If your crush says she forgets to lock her windows on her way out, it would be very thoughtful to remind her to.

*Maintain eye contact: So I know between the restless butterflies in your stomach and the skipping heartbeat, you are probably too shy to look at your crush. I tell you however, DO NOT look down or away when talking to your crush.

Maintain an eye contact with them to show your level of interest and confidence. Nobody wants to feel like a bother. Looking down would most likely give your crush the impression that you would rather be elsewhere.

*Do not be possessive: Being in contact with your crush does not give you the right to become possessive of him or her. Give your crush his/her space. Please do not overwhelm your crush with calls and texts in the name of being caring especially if your crush is not a fan of it.

Also, do not go about questioning why your crush was talking with another boy or girl as the case may be.  It’s really disgusting. It shows high levels of insecurity and immaturity.

*Be natural: I know the tendency to over impress your crush exists but you must not take it over board so as not to come off as a fake person. The more you want to impress, the more likely you are to exaggerate things you have done and things you can do.

This can make you come off as proud and be a hindrance to winning your crush over. Whatever you do, be natural; never fake it.

*Be bold about your feelings: For heaven’s sake do not wallow in silence; confess your feelings! Let your crush know what you feel if not, even though you might make an impression to your crush, he/she might think you are not serious about him/her.

Then all the moves you have made will  likely be in vain when John the bolder guy, confesses his feelings to her.

    Warm regards,

    Kehinde Oluwafisayo Matthew
