  • Ohanaeze, others flay IPOB attacks on Ikpeazu, Umahi

Ohanaeze Youth Council and a coalition of Igbo groups on Monday condemned the verbal attacks on governors of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu and his Ebonyi State counterpart, David Umahi by members of the opposition parties and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

IPOB leader, Nnamdi KANU, had said in his recent broadcast that Abia and Ebonyi people should vote out Ikpeazu and Umah, claiming that they are sabotaging their agitation.

The groups described their actions as unacceptable and laughable.

National President of OYC, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, after their meetings in Abakaliki, said Kanu has derailed from his Biafra agitation and should not be listened to.

He urged Kanu to concentrate on the no-election campaign and leave Ikpeazu and Umahi alone to concentrate on their quest to reposition their different states.

In a statement, he said: “The coalition of Igbo groups; namely World Igbo Youth Congress, Southeast Women Professionals and Igbo Students Movement had met with the Forum of BibeingaAgitators and resolved that the attack was laughable.

“It is laughable that Kanu is derailing from his Biafra agitation and now being sponsored by politicians to cause confusion and pursuing campaign of calumny against those who mean well for him.”

The coalition expressed concern at the outburst, asking why the IPOB members did not register to obtain their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), despite that they were advised to do so.

Isiguzoro urged the IPOB to emulate the maturity and non-violence approach of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), led by Uchenna Madu.

It lauded the group, which had expressed willingness to allow INEC to conduct election in the southeast, and also ensure that there is no bloodshed during the ongoing Operation Python Dance111.

On Adams Oshiomhole’s allegations that Ikpeazu has been collecting bailout funds without paying salaries, it said: “We are shocked because our members who are Abia workers are paid as at when due, while no Abia or Ebonyi worker is being owed.”

“We unanimously state that zoning formula favours Ikpeazu and Umahi. The opposition parties in Abia and Ebonyi know that their candidates cannot win in these states, because there are no vacancies to be filled in the two Government Houses till 2023.

  • Avoid violence, support the Army – Igbo group charges

Igbos in Nigeria Movement has urged the people of the south-east states to be discerning in their choices in the general elections saying that strategies that have failed the region in the past must not be repeated again since they will yield the exact same results.
The movement, which spoke through its President, Maxi Ifeanyi Igwe in Abuja on Friday also urged Igbos to cooperate with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in ensuring that the elections are not hijacked by thugs that hide under agitation to foment trouble.
Igwe called on Igbos to disregard the call by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu for the boycott of the elections even as he noted that such demand can only be made by someone that is interested in getting the Igbos to be labelled as anti-democratic elements that did not support the entrenchment of democracy.
He stressed that “The Igbo states, being peaceful, would not have needed the Army’s nationwide Operation Python Dance had IPOB and other divisive elements not engaged in a needless sabre-rattling that created the impression that war is afoot. But this is not who we are in Igboland, we are pro-democracy any day and we will not allow history to misjudge us as a people because of a few recalcitrant renegades.
“Every other geo-political zone has been agitating for restructuring and what we have seen them doing is getting candidates across the spectrum to commit to pursuing this agenda. The people of these other geo-political zones have in essence made a strong statement that the agitation for true fiscal federalism will pick up pace once they have elected candidates that are favourably disposed to restructuring.
“The south-east cannot, in this sense, be different by trying to achieve the same objective through violence and calling for the disintegration of the country as IPOB and Kanu are doing. The region must also not make itself unnecessary enemies by being abusive of other ethnic nationals and directing hate speech against them as we have seen from Kanu since he resurfaced from hiding,” he noted.
Igbos in Nigeria Movement’s president counselled against bloc support while asking that Igbos should freely
vote for candidates of their choice without feeling coerced. According to him, “Past experience has shown that Igbos are singled out for undesirable special treatment each time they vote as a bloc for a candidate, something that the other ethnic nationalities do not do. Other geo-political zones allow their people to vote for candidates of their choice, which ensures that whoever emerges the winner will not feel than an entire geo-political zone or ethnic group voted against them.

“This is why we advise those creating the false impression that the entire Igbo nation has endorsed any one particular candidate to desist from the unwholesome act as it would be unfair for them to set up the entire south-east for victimization when a wrongly endorsed candidate loses the election as happened in the past.
“We also urge our people to shun violence and other political actions that inimical to the growth and development of Nigeria.
This appeal becomes necessary given the worsening instances of threats and counter threats that politicians are issuing against each other. Our people need to read between the lines and appreciate that the ancestral homes of these candidates and cities where they have huge business investments will at no time record political violence even if we allow impassioned support for the them to ignite Igboland.
“Not only must the people refrain from violence we urge our people in Igboland to support the Nigerian Army and all security agencies that have deployed to maintain the peace during the elections. The support to the army and other agencies is to ensure that thugs that have been hired to unleash violence on the political opponents of their paymasters do not succeed. The people must also be careful of the incitement from IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is now clearly acting out a script that does not accommodate the interest of the Igbos,” Igwe charged.
  • Police arrests 37 suspected members of IPOB in Umuahia

Abia State Command of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in collaboration with other sister security agencies in the state on Tuesday hold a Joint Show of Force (JSF) operation in major cities of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Chris Ezike in a telephone interview told our reporter that the command arrested thirty seven members of outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia, the state capital who he said dressed in Jewish robe while they joined their counterparts in the state to observe the group’s planned 10million march protest of the group.

Ezike added that the personnel of the command also recovered Israelie and Biafra insignia from the IPOB members. This is even as he stated the law will soon take its cause after they have profiled members of the outlawed group.

Information gathered by our reporter has it that the protesters trooped out in their thousands and began the peaceful protest around 10:00am from the Hotel Damgrate axis of Library Avenue (Bank Road); some distance from the home of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters comprising men, women and children were said to be chanting songs in Hebrew language, singing pro -Biafra songs, waving Biafra and Israeli flags as they marched the streets of Umuahia.

The protest, which was said to be peaceful turned bad when the protesters who were heading towards the popular Isi-Gate were intercepted and ordered to a halt at the Okpara Square by heavily armed policemen in over four pick -up vans intercepted the protesters and ordered them to halt the movement.

The security men were said to have allegedly started firing teargas canisters to disperse the protesters which resulted to chaos in the area as traders and passersby scamper for safety.

Unconfirmed report has it that a resident of Umuahia believed to be an asthmatic patient in the area who inhaled the teargas slumped but was however rushed out of the scene with the help of a commercial tricyclist that reportedly took the victim to an undisclosed hospital.

Our reporter who also monitored the march in Aba where the IPOB were said to have high followership reports that security agencies including Army, Civil Defence, regular police and tactical commanders of Police Mobile Force (PMF), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as early as 7am moved in a convoy round major streets of Aba.

Areas covered by the team include Ariaria market, Azikiwe road, Faulks road, Aba-Owerri road, Port Harcourt road among others.

A senior Police officer in Aba Area Command who spoke on anonymity told our reporter that no arrest was made in Aba as there were no IPOB or Jewish protesters on the streets of Aba.

The source while urging Aba residents to go about their business without fear of molestation, added that the police and other sister agencies were committed in making sure that there was peace and security of lives and property in the commercial town during and after the festive period.

In a related development, the leadership of IPOB who gave the number of the arrested members as fifty four (54) frowned at what it described as incessant arrest of the Jewish worshippers and IPOB members by security agents in the state.

IPOB in a release signed by its spokesman, Emma Powerful threatened that they were going to notify Jewish Community all over the world about the deliberate attempt by security agencies in Nigeria and Abia State in particular to clampdown on members of the religious faith who were even peaceful while exercising their fundamental human rights.

“We are warning Abia state police commissioner to release them, the 54 innocent citizens of Biafra who were doing peaceful evangelism in Umuahia for Biafra freedom. We blame Okezie Ikpeazu and Abia police commissioner the damage this action may cause in Abia state if they fail to release these innocent Jewish worshipers exercising their rights. Okezie Ikpeazu and police commissioner must release those arrested without further delay or they will live to regret what will come upon them soon.

“IPOB is firmly rooted with peaceful way to restore Biafra and cannot change its resolve to become violent organization because of high handedness Nigeria Government and her security agencies especially police and army officers are using against IPOB members since inception of this peaceful means adopted by our supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We are calling on Nigeria Police and Army officers to stop this humiliation and harassment forthwith on anybody identified with IPOB family worldwide or face the consequences.

“We are aware that Abia police commissioner and other security officers in Umuahia Abia state are working hard to please their Hausa Fulani slaves’ masters in Abuja but Hausa Fulani caliphate and their collaborators must deny them at the appropriate time.

“However, IPOB must not fail to warn police commissioner and Okezie Ikpeazu once again if they fail to release these innocent citizens who committed no crime against anybody or Nigeria state that means they should prepare and wait for IPOB action. We are coming on Nigeria police soon because you cannot continue killing and intimidating innocent and unarmed IPOB faithful and go Scot free.

“We promise to remain peaceful in every of our approach asking Nigerian government never push IPOB to pick up arms against anybody because it won’t be good to all and sundry in Nigeria,” the statement read

  • Two feared dead as IPOB, Police clash in Anambra

Two persons were feared dead on Friday when members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, (IPOB) and officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Nnewi division clashed in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The deceased, a police officer and a member of the pro-Biafran group, were reportedly killed during the fracas said to have triggered at the popular Nkwo Nnewi Market.

The Nation gathered that members of the pro-Biafran group, numbering over 2000, had stormed the market to drive home their “no referendum, no 2019 election” agitation.

The protesters, with each waving the Biafran flag, moved round, and asked people in the market not to participate in the elections unless the federal government were ready to heed to their demand of conducting referendum.

Our correspondent gathered that problem ensured following the arrival of police operatives to the scene in three hilux vans who attempted to stop the protesters.

“Members of the group pounced on the police officers and destroyed their vans, leaving two people dead in the process,” an eye witness said.

The fracas was said to have led to the abrupt closure of the markets around 2:30pm as traders were seen scampering for safety.

The IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, had earlier in a statement, said members of the group were in the industrial city of the state to express joy over the second coming of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu in Jerusalem.

He said the reappearance of their leader was a clear testimony that the struggle for Biafra actualization was divine.

“IPOB volunteers marched along all major streets and roads of Biafraland today to register their happiness over the second coming and reappearance of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Jerusalem, the state of Israel last month.

The statement read partly, “Our leader’s reappearance in Israel after the Nigerian government and her security forces including the Nigerian Army, Air force and Naval forces invaded his compound at Afaraukwu Ibeku Umuahia in Abia State last year September is clearly an indication to all and sundry that God Almighty is behind the struggle for Biafra liberation.

“Biafrans are equally today showcasing to the world that we are ready to boycott every Nigerian elections come 2019 especially presidential election next year.

“Our march today on the roads and streets across Biafraland must send signals to politicians and saboteurs among us that Biafrans are determined to leave the prison called Nigeria where British government experimented to lead black Africans and other black nations across the globe but failed to live up to the expectations for over 100 years because of the Hausa Fulani caliphate dominations.

“IPOB rally and march today being 23rd November, 2018 is ongoing in all the states across Biafraland like Rivers, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and other Biafra clans and tribes fraudulently caved into Kogi, Benue and Edo States, the unrelented efforts by IPOB family worldwide to restore Biafra sovereignty must continue unless Nigeria Government and it’s handlers give us date for Biafra referendum to ascertain whether our people wants to continue stay in Nigeria or not.

“We are much aware that some unscrupulous individuals and groups including those Biafran stocks who work with Nigeria Government and those who prefer to be slaves in their own fathers land to the detriment of Biafra restoration project.

“IPOB is divinely ordained restore Biafra sovereignty out of this enclave called Nigeria. We are coming to show Nigerians and its handlers including their security apparatus what is called civil disobedience because IPOB is more of intellectuals than daft.”

  • Kanu’s disappearance: Sen Abaribe, two others to forfeit N100m each

…Judge orders payment into court’s account

Senator Eyinnnya Abaribe and two others, who stood surety for the fleeing leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu are to forfeit N100million over their inability to produce Kanu in court.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja gave the order for temporary forfeiture of the N100m bail bond, which each of the sureties signed when they took Kanu on bail in April last year.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Wednesday, Abaribe and Uchendu were abent in court. They were also unable to produce Kanu, as earlier ordered by the court.

In view of the development, Justice Nyako, who had threatened to order the arrest of the two sureties, who were absent in court, later changed her mind and directed the conversion of the bail bond, signed by each of the sureties, to cash and paid into the court.

  • Nnamdi Kanu: Abaribe writes Nigeria’s ambassador to Israel

•Seeks confirmation of IPOB leader’s presence

The Senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has written the Nigerian High Commissioner to Israel, His Excellency, Enoch Duchi, to confirm if the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is in Israel.

Abaribe wrote through his lawyer, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume, SAN.

The senator, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy, was one of the three individuals who stood surety for Kanu when he was granted bail by an Abuja Federal High Court.

Kanu is standing trial for treasonable offences in the Federal High Court.

The letter dated November 7, 2018 was sent through the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema. It is entitled “Is a citizen of our country Nnamdi Kanu in Israel?”

The lawyer said that the letter to the Ambassador for confirmation that Kanu was actually in Israel became necessary because of the story making the rounds on the social and online media that “an Nnamdl Kanu was sighted at the Wailing Wall during a prayer session in Israel.”

The letter reads in part: “We are the counsel to Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Abia South Senatorial Zone in the 8th Senate of National Assembly of Nigeria.

“As a pronounced patriot, he recently, against all odds, put life into our constitutional provision of the liberty of an accused as well as eased tension in our polity by standing surety to Nnamdi Kanu (who is on trial on allegations of treasonable offences in CHARGE No. FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.)

“In fact, to situate you properly into the salient realities involved in this national tragedy, the Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

“On 28th April 2017, the Hon trial Court granted him bail on medical grounds and Sen. Abaribe was one of the three sureties who executed the bail bond for his release.

“Your Excellency would recall that sometimes in 2017, the Nigerian Army High Command announced publicly that they were going to commence a military operation code-named “OPERATION PYTHON DANCE “(EGWU EKE) 11 in the whole of the South East Zone of Nigeria from 15th of September to 14th of October 2017.”

It continued: “Curiously, selectively and tragically, from 11” to 14″ September 2017, well before the announced scheduled dates, the Nigerian Army, with truck loads of heavily armed soldiers, armoured tanks and other intimidating offensive military weapons, embarked on massive military operation exclusively at the Nnamdi Kanu’s town, lsiama, Afaraukwu lbeku Umuahia, Abia State and at his residence (the PALACE of HRH EZE ISREAL KANU) where at the material time of the tragic invasion, he was staying with his royal parents.

“There and then as the invading Army left, the Nnamdl Kanu along with his parents were never seen or heard from again till today.

“This explains his absence from his trial since that time till now.

“Your Excellency, already before the Hon. trial Court is an Affidavit deposed to on 17th November, 2017 to the effect that:

i)This fatal military invasion of town and residence of the Nnamdl Knnu climaxing on 14″ of September 201 7 resulted in high casualties as corpse’s littered all over the vicinity including In the PALACE.

    1. ii) The Nnamdi Kanu and his parents were In the PALACE at the time of the tragic invasion of the town and PALACE.

iii) During the invasion, the Nnamdi Kanu and his parents were never again seen or heard from either privately or publicly till date.

iv)The Nnamdi Kanu and his parents were allegedly whisked off by the invading soldiers.

“The Hon. Court had now ordered each of the three sureties to show cause why each would not forfeit the respective bail bond of one hundred million naira (N100, 000, 000:00) or go to prison for their alleged failure to produce the Nnamdl Kanu for the on-going trial.

“Your Excellency, in the midst of this quagmire, our attention has been drawn to ongoing news making rounds on the social and online media to the effect that an Nnamdl Kanu was sighted at the Wailing Wall during a prayer session in Israel.

“In view of this, we humbly request your Excellency to use your good office to painstakingly inquire from the Government of Israel as follows:

    1. a) If there is any Nnamdi Kanu, a Nigerian citizen in their country, Israel?
    2. b) Where there is, is that person the same as the Nnamdi Kanu standing trial in CHARGE No. FHC/ABI/CR/383/2015 and that was never seen again during the tragic military invasion of his home on 14″ of September 2017.
    3. c) If the Nnamdl Kanu that was never seen again during the tragic military Invasion of his home is the one in Israel, please find out from the government of Israel how he arrived there and the circumstances that led to that? What of his royal parents?

    (I) Finally, Your Excellency, where there is an Nnamdl Kanu in Israel, as the Law Firm representing Sen Abarlbe, we are ready to assist you in a necessary DNA procedure to enable you verify whether the alleged Nnamdl Kanu said to be in Israel is same as the Nnamdl Kanu standing trial In CHARGE No. FHC/ABI/CR/383/2015.

“As citizens and or counsel, we all have the duty to assist our courts with the truth and the established facts.

“We therefore urge Your Excellency to, under oath, verify your findings as per A to D above and to the effect that they are from the Government of Israel.

“This is because I will be submitting them on the Nnamdi Kanu to the Hon. Court.

“We look forward to hearing from your Excellency soonest. “Kindly, accept the assurances of our highest regards.”

  • IPOB: Lawyer seeks Fani-Kayode, Abaribe’s probe over Kanu’s escape

The Federal High Court in Abuja has been asked to mandate the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to investigate and prosecute former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe and others over their alleged involvement in how Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) escaped from the country.

The request formed part of the reliefs in a suit filed, on October 31, this year, by a lawyer, Isaiah Ayugu, who said he was concerned about the turn of event and the damage the scandal about Kanu’s disappearance and the claim that the Nigerian sate was responsible have had on the nation’s image both at home and abroad.

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1254/18, has the Director General of the SSS, the SSS, the Inspector general of Police (IGP) and the NPF as respondents.

Ayugu argued that by recently revelation that Kanu was in Israel, it was evident that Fani-Kayode, Abaribe, Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and others, who had accused the Nigerian Army of being behind Kanu’s disappearance, knew about the IPOB leader’s escape from Nigeria.

The plaintiff stated, in a supporting affidavit, “that the said Nnamdi Kanu, the so called self-acclaimed leader of IPOB, da group that has long been proscribed and designated a terrorist group, is alive and was seen in Israel from where he called a world press conference and made a live broadcast of his new and renewed agenda for his group.

“In the broadcast, Kanu boasted that he will bring ‘hell to Nigeria.’ It is therefore clear that, whilst Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, Femi Fani-Kayode, Ifeanyi Ejiofor,  Tochukwu Uchendu, Emmanuel Shallow Ben, Emmanuel Kanu, Uchechi Kanu, leaders of Afaraukwu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state, the different civil liberty organisations and media practitioners and so many others too numerous to mention were making several dangerous claims that Nnamdi Kanu has been killed, abducted or being held by the Army,  they were aware that he was actually out of the country, by their collective or respective assistance, from where he resurfaced in video clips of him praying in Israel and subsequent video broadcast.

“Because Senator Abaribe took Nnamdi Kanu on bail, the case against Nnamdi  Kanu has not seen the light of the day as Nnamdi  Kanu has now jumped bail.”

The plaintiff particularly seeks an order of mandamus, mandating the respondents “to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu from Nigeria when, in fact, the Nigerian Army was accused of abducting, arresting, kidnapping, killing and assassinating him.

“An order mandating the respondents to prosecute all persons suspected or indicted of involvement in aiding Nnamdi Kanu to evade justice.”

The plaintiff also seeks “an order mandating the respondents to investigate and prosecute Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, Femi Fani-Kayode, Tochukwu Uchendu, Emmanuel Shallow Ben, Emmanuel Kanu, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and all those who worked together to propagate and spread the inciting lies and falsehood that Nnamdi Kanu was abducted, arrested, kidnapped, detained, killed and assassinated by the Nigerian military, when indeed they were well aware of Nnamdi Kanu’s whereabouts, because they played roles in helping Nnamdi Kanu disappear from Nigeria.”

The case is yet to be assigned to any judge for hearing.

  • Nnamdi Kanu: A continuing tragedy

WEEKS before his surety was to face the judicial axe at the resumption of his trial for treasonable felony, Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suddenly reappeared in public overseas, putting the lie to rumours that he had been killed in a military invasion of his father’s palace. Mr Kanu had been admitted to bail, but had been too undisciplined to keep to the terms of his bail. His supporters and admirers had hoped that if he was not dead, he would at least wait until his case was heard, and his lawyers wrong-foot the prosecution whose forces had taken forceful and pre-emptive steps to silence the voluble pro-Biafra campaigner. Alas, Mr Kanu never leaves bad enough alone.

Some reports suggest that Mr Kanu visited Jerusalem’s Western wall for prayers a few days ago, and his supporters and IPOB activists corroborate his reappearance and Jerusalem visit. An Israeli envoy, however, denied his presence in Israel. Some other reports also suggest that the British Government was last week about to issue him temporary travel papers, implying that he is well and alive, and still raising Cain. IPOB foot soldiers enthuse that the reappearance of Mr Kanu energises the pro-Biafra cause, and they are now more than ever eager to forgive his weaknesses and imperiousness so blatantly apparent to outsiders. Mr Kanu himself has spoken thunder and blather, laced with his usual expletives and threats. He is back to his usual self, he claimed, and would bring hell to Nigeria.

It is useless educating his followers. They are bewitched, and even the best exorcist would find it tough separating them from their delusions, delusions fed by the anarchical ideas and demagoguery of Mr Kanu. The tragedy of the whole story is not about the initial disappearance of Mr Kanu, or the pointless invasion of his father’s palace, or even his reappearance and bilious propaganda. What is truly tragic about Mr Kanu and the sizeable following he has garnered for the pro-Biafra cause is how a great cause for the reintegration of the Igbo into the Nigerian setting is being needlessly bastardised by an exuberant young man.

Historians agree that there has been no closure to the Nigerian civil war, nor have the remote and immediate causes of the war been adequately addressed. Not only have the Igbo been consequently further alienated, the causes of the war have reincarnated in one form or another and expanded in scope and magnitude and even metastasised to the point of destabilising the entire country. The Igbo alienation has intensified under the Buhari presidency, and the rest of the country is in such a lather that hardly any highway or cranny is safe today, as the Kaduna mayhem is showing in ghastly technicolour. The reasons for these problems are not being addressed, and the government itself has incompetently viewed the problems from the rose-coloured prism of law and order. It is doubly tragic that the genuine complaints by the Igbo should therefore inspire the wrong champion, Mr Kanu, whose charlatanry appears to know no bounds. Placing a great and good cause in the hands of an unworthy champion is a disaster.

Igbo elders have been ambivalent about the pro-Biafra cause, especially because the champion that is forcing himself on them is worrisomely iconoclastic. Meanwhile, Igbo youths, many of them indoctrinated by the sufferings of the times, fiercely romanticise the Biafra agenda. If nothing is done to tackle the Nigerian question, activists like Mr Kanu will continue to exploit the country’s existential contradictions to foment rebellion. Notwithstanding how the elections go in 2019, no one can tell how terrible the situation will get, or how divided Igboland will become in the months ahead as the misdirected IPOB leader indulges in truancy and errantry.

  • Kanu, IPOB: not again

Recent footage of Nnamdi Kanu hitting the wailing wall in Israel has left many wondering if the leader of the banned separatist group Independent Peoples of Biafra or IPOB is contemplating a return to Nigeria to rally what remains of his group. Kanu disappeared in September last year when IPOB members clashed with soldiers in Abia State in the days of Operation Python Dance, a military exercise that claimed many lives, mostly members of the pro-Biafra group.

Since the clash, the group has been largely quiet, and families of those killed have been privately dealing with their losses. Now the sighting of Kanu has triggered fear in the hearts of people, especially those who do not want any more trouble.

Johncollins Osuji’s in Ihitte Afara in Mbaitoli Council Area of Imo State is one such family. Life became a nightmare for them after the army declared their son wanted for his role in the pro-Biafra protest of last year. They said they are hounded by security operatives, especially soldiers who storm their home in search of the IPOB chief.

Mrs. Theresa Osuji said, “My son was a trader at Aba market and was doing fairly well when he joined IPOB and suddenly returned from Aba where he was doing business and started gathering other youths to protest against the government. We tried to stop him but he could not listen.

“One night after soldiers raided the home of Nnamdi Kanu, we were already sleeping when soldiers broke into our home and demanded to see our son but fortunately he did not sleep at home. That was how he escaped and ran to Lagos and now he is trying to start his business again. But since we heard that Kanu wants to come back to Nigeria to continue the agitation, we have been gripped by fear and the whole family is praying that he does not leave his business again to join him.”

For the family of Anyaduba in Onitsha South Local Government Area, the story was quite tragic. Two members of the family, Chinonso and Simeon Anyaduba, were killed during the IPOB protest in Onitsha, when they allegedly attacked soldiers at a checkpoint in an attempt to grab their guns.

Chief Offor Anyaduba, who spoke to The Nation, said, “My family has paid a steep price for the Biafra agitation. I lost two of my children on the same day; they were shot like dogs by soldiers during the Nnamdi Kanu protest. I warned them against belonging to that group (IPOB) but they could not listen. I know that our youths were misguided by the likes of Kanu and Ralph Uwazuruike who are using them to make their money and fame with phoney promises.

“Until I die, I will never forget that fateful day that I had to bury two of my children; my wife has never been the same again, she has been in and out of hospital since then. My advice is that our youths should throw away this Biafra agitation and face their business. I fought during the civil war and I won’t want a repeat of that experience”.

Speaking further, he said, “We were relieved when Kanu disappeared and the whole wahala was dying down but we don’t know what will happen with this his sudden reappearance. But I urge our people to be law-abiding, especially our youths and women”.

Narrating the ordeal of some of the IPOB women, who were recently arrested and arraigned in court for protesting naked in Owerri, the Imo State capital, to demand the whereabouts of Kanu, Chief Martins Ibecheodo said the IPOB agitation did more harm to the Igbo than good.

He said, “Kanu and his violent agitations became a serious threat for us; he was never open to dialogue, he does not have regard for any Igbo leader no matter how highly placed. The economy of the Southeast was going down, investors were leaving the zone in droves for fear of their investments. There was uncertainty in the Southeast and nobody was safe anymore, especially those that do not believe in the Biafra struggle.

“You can imagine the reproach the arrest and arraignment of Igbo women, who left their homes and businesses, some of them nursing mothers and octogenarians to protest half naked on the streets for an unrealisable course which they don’t even understand. They were being used for selfish interests.

“We heaved a sigh of relief [during Kanu’s absence] when he resurfaced again. There is growing tension now, people are afraid of what is going to happen next. We just pray that he stays back and allow peace to reign”.

A trader in Onitsha market, who didn’t want his name in print, told The Nation, “We went through hell during the Kanu era, we were forced to close our shops and pay huge amounts of money to IPOB members who came to collect illegal levies in the market for the prosecution of the Biafra struggle. You dare not refuse them otherwise you will be labeled a traitor and punished severely or killed.

“We were very happy and relieved when he ran away from the country, we celebrated it in the markets. We thought it was all over and we have been free but we are afraid now. We also went through painful ordeal in the hands of soldiers who see every Igbo youth as IPOB member, especially during the Operation Python Dance. All these were a result of Kanu and his IPOB agitation”.

In Aba, the commercial heart of Abia State, the Okemmiris cannot forget 2017 in a hurry. Their son, Emele Uduma Okemmiri died in the IPOB clash with the military.

Emele was one of the best suit makers in Enyimba City with a great vision of taking his business to the global scene. Such was his talent that his cuts were reportedly better than those of famous international designers.

The elder brother of the deceased, Godwin, told our reporter that his brother died when a stray bullet from shots fired by soldiers deployed to Aba. A colleague of his described Emele’s death as pathetic.

“Why this whole thing pain us is that, if he was an IPOB member, we can say he was killed because of what he believed in. And the evidence would have been seen even at the spot where he was killed. He never had on him any bangle or materials belonging to IPOB. He was never a member of IPOB. He came to his shop as usual to do his business, he heard a gunshot and came out to ascertain what was happening and the next thing, he was shot right there at his business area. That was a terrible way for a young and industrious man to end up”

A man, who lost two children, defended them and the cause for which they died.

“My kids were above 20,” he said. “They told me that since I fought the war and could not win, that they were going to join Nnamdi Kanu to make it happen. They said it was a gift that they want to give me before they die or I die. Physically, Biafra hasn’t come. But spiritually, it is here. We are only waiting for the manifestation of the prophecy of God about Biafra.”

The IPOB leader’s first public speech since he escaped from his country home in Abia has reignited the cult-like passion in the youths, which was almost dying down. Parents are once more becoming apprehensive over their children.

Another threat visited on the zone by the IPOB, which was diluted by Kanu’s disappearance, was the infamous election boycott campaign. In his absence, most of the misguided youths had seen the error in most of what they were coerced to believe by the IPOB leader and were beginning to reintegrate in the society.

Politicians including governors were relieved after Kanu disappeared from the scene, but his sudden return has revived the fears of the Igbo elites who were more or less seen as saboteurs by IPOB members.

Today IPOB offices and cells across the Southeast, which were abandoned, are coming to life. Women and youths who had lost faith in the Biafra struggle have been energised by Kanu’s speech monitored on Radio Biafra.

People, who were hitherto bold to condemn IPOB activities, have all fallen back into line over fear of being labeled traitors.

The anxiety has been dismissed by the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Chief Ralph Uwazuruike.

He said, “Nnamdi Kanu out of ignorance called for boycott of Anambra election last year and the election held, now that he is calling for another boycott, how does he want to achieve that? A lot of his members were killed last year and he left them and ran away, a real freedom fighter does not fear for death rather he donates his life for the struggle. He should be disregarded because all his activities from his arrest, to his release and finally his travel to Israel were stage-managed, so he is fake.”
