No fewer than 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sakwaya Ward, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The mass defection, which added to the growing wave of opposition members joining the APC across the state’s 27 local government areas, was celebrated by party supporters.

Receiving the new members, Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Abdullahi Tsoho Garba, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to citizens’ welfare and the consolidation of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s development agenda.

Garba highlighted the governor’s inclusive approach to governance, emphasizing progress in infrastructure, human capital development, and service delivery — all aimed at building a prosperous Jigawa State.

He assured the defectors of continued access to the dividends of democracy under the Namadi administration.

Also speaking, the member representing Dutse Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Tasiu Soja, welcomed the new entrants and pledged equal opportunities and fair treatment within the party.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, former PDP chairman of Sakwaya Ward, Malam Danazumi Yakubu, said their decision was driven by Governor Namadi’s purposeful and people-centered leadership.

“We joined the APC to contribute our quota to building a prosperous Jigawa under Governor Namadi’s realistic 12-point agenda. The mission is on the right track, and we don’t want to be left behind,” Yakubu stated.

Prominent among the new APC members are PDP stakeholder Alhaji Garba Dankwashan (Sarkin Fawa), Ward Secretary Abdulrahim Zobiya, Women Leader Hajiya Mariya, Youth Leader Kabiru Jidawa, and the polling unit chairmen of Gadarawa and Sabon Gari.

  • NNPP not part of Kwankwaso’s plans to join APC – Secretary

NNPP not part of Kwankwaso’s plans to join APC – Secretary

The National Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Dr. Ogini Olaposi says plans to join the APC is by Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiya Movement and not the party.

The NNPP scribe gave the clarification in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the NNPP on Saturday,  declared that his supporters and him  are now ready to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso, however,  warned that his political movement will not allow itself to be used to win elections and then abandoned afterwards.

Reacting to the situation, Olaposi said that by the declaration, Kwankwaso has finally admitted that he and his movement are not part of the NNPP.

“At  last we have been vindicated. All negotiations by any party with Kwankwaso should be done on his individual capacity.

“Our party will now  rest from the Movement’s  resistance after they were expelled for anti party activities.

“The NNPP has nothing against the ruling party and if at any point ahead of the 2027 general elections we think we should enter into alliance with APC  or any other, it will be decided by all members.

“For now, we are putting our house in order ahead of elections nationwide after the crisis and litigations that Kwankwaso and his followers brought to the NNPP.”

According to Olaposi, the  Memorandum of Understanding between the Kwankwasiya  Movement and NNPP ended after the 2023 presidential election.

“The crisis began because rather than leave peacefully,  they began to plan to hijack the party. We can’t wait to see them in another party,” he said.

The national secretary  said that Kwankwaso  no longer has a political  platform and majority of his followers in Kano joined the APC long before now.

“Kwankwaso has no political party. His political value dipped after betraying the NNPP that gave him a free platform for his presidential ambition and when the strategic members of the movement   joined the ruling party.

“Nigerians who negotiate  with Kwankwaso and his group  should know that it is on his right as a citizen but not as a member  of  the NNPP.

“Any negotiation in the name of NNPP is null and void  because they remain expelled from our party.”

The NNPP chieftain lamented the delay by INEC in uploading  the party’s new executive after a court ordered convention that produced the Dr Agbo Major led executive,” he added.

Stop change of textbooks on resumption, Ajadi urges govt, private schools

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Amb. Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has urged government and private schools to stop frequent and unnecessary change of textbooks every academic session.

He expressed concerns over economic strain of change of textbooks on parents, saying many families are already struggling under the weight of economic hardship.

A statement by Ajadi said it was common practice for younger siblings to reuse textbooks passed down from older ones, a practice that helped to ease financial burdens on households in the past.

According to him: “The attitude of both private and government schools in changing text books every term has forced the parents to continuously buy new books every term for different classes.

“During our time, siblings were using textbooks of their elders. I am urging the government to stop changing textbooks every term or year, parents are groaning in pains.

“I called on the Minister of Education and the State Governors to stop this habit as parents are going through hell. I also call on the governments both at the state and the Federal level to subside prices of text books to help the parents.

“I pity parents who are forced to buy different sets of textbooks for their children every term. This should not be happening.”

He however called on the government to intervene by subsidising textbooks for students as a way of supporting families and promote access to education amid economic difficulties.

NNPP expels Reps member over unpaid dues, anti-party activities

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the expulsion of House of Representatives member, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa from the party.

The party is accusing the lawmaker of anti-party activities and failure to meet his financial obligations to the party.

State Chairman of NNPP, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, who made the disclosure while briefing journalists in Kano yesterday, said the decision followed Jibrin’s repeated media outbursts against the party and its leadership.

Dungurawa described Jibrin as a “weak politician” whose electoral success was only made possible through the Kwankwasiyya movement and NNPP platform, not personal strength.

“If he was truly strong politically, he would have won his election under the APC, but he failed. It was when he joined NNPP through Kwankwasiyya that he became a House of Reps member. Now he is deceiving himself thinking he is strong,” Dungurawa said.

Dungurawa disclosed that a reconciliation committee was initially set up to engage Jibrin after his interview with Channels Television, “however, a subsequent media outing proved he has crossed the line.”

“Instead of dialogue, he went further to work against our interest, openly declaring loyalty outside the party. That is why we expelled him. He has no value to add,” the chairman said.

Dungurawa further accused Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa of defaulting in the payment of mandatory party dues, vowing that NNPP would institute legal action to recover the funds.

“We are taking him to court to recover what he is owing the party. It is a party constitutional requirement for every member to pay dues, but he has consistently failed to do so,” the chairman added.

On speculations that the expelled lawmaker may return to the APC, Dungurawa said such a move would not affect NNPP’s strength.

Reacting to the news of his expulsion, Jibrin said his recent  interview was not enough to warrant  such a “heavy penalty,” and described dissenting  views as  part of the party’s core principles.

“I strongly believe the contents of the interview I granted few days ago should not warrant such a penalty because it is in tandem with the core principles of our party and movement which allows for dissenting views,” he said.

He claimed he was not served any  by the party  to explain himself.

“Even under military dictatorship, an accused is subjected to a court martial,” he said.

Jibrin said he accepted the party’s decision in good faith and would not challenge it in court.

On the allegation  of  defaulting in his payment of dues, Jibrin said  he never refused to fulfill his obligations, saying he was ready to clear any outstanding payments if presented with an invoice.

“There is no need to go to court. I respectfully request the party to send me the invoice and I will promptly pay,” he said.

Taking a swipe at the party’s leadership style, the former Director-General of the Tinubu Support Groups accused the NNPP of failing to value its members.

“The party does not believe anybody has political value and comes short in treating people with respect. No matter what you bring on board, you are a nobody,” he said.

NNPP writes INEC, demands stoppage of elections

Mr Ndubuisi Ukpai esq, counsel for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has written to INEC, demanding that the commission must stop all elections until its authentic logo is included in ballot papers  for future elections.

This is contained in the letter made available to the media by the party on Wednesday in Lagos.

The letter, dated Aug. 25 and addressed to the INEC Chairman, was titled;: “RE: SUIT NO.: CV/3210/2025; New Nigeria Peoples Party VS Independent National Electoral Commission: Continued Representation of the Authentic Leadership of the NNPP and the Need To Maintain Status Quo Pending Determination of the Suit for Judicial Review”.

It stated that INEC should refrain from  conducting  all elections until it reflected the true and correct logo of the NNPP and participation of the party under the leadership of Dr Major Agbo as National Chairman.

“We remain counsel to the authentic leadership of the NNPP, under the national chairmanship of Agbo, and write at their instance.

“You will recall our previous correspondence, wherein we drew the commission’s attention to the imperative of strict compliance with subsisting judgments of competent courts, affirming the authentic leadership of the NNPP.

“Regrettably, in the face of INEC’s continued reluctance to give effect to the said judgments, our client was constrained to institute judicial review proceedings against the commission.”

According to the party, Pursuant to the said action, on Aug. 15, 2025, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory graciously granted our client leave to bring an application for an order of mandamus, compelling INEC’s compliance.

“Consequent upon this, an Originating Motion on Notice had been duly filed and served on the commission.

“May we respectfully remind the commission that upon the grant of leave in judicial review proceedings, the law imposes a duty to maintain the status quo and refrain from taking steps capable of rendering the substantive proceedings nugatory.

“As was held in Governor of Lagos State v. Ojukwu (1986) 1 NWLR (Pt. 18) 621, no party, and least of all a public institution, is permitted to take the law into its own hands or foist a fait accompli on the court.

“To do otherwise is to court judicial reproach and expose responsible officers to personal consequences for contempt of court.”

The NNPP also demanded that INEC must cease and desist from according any recognition,, whatsoever to the expelled members of the party, purporting to be leaders of the NNPP under one Dr Ajuji Ahmed.

It also stated that INEC must stop actions that might prejudice or compromise pending proceedings, in line with express duty imposed on all authorities under Section 287(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to enforce and give effect to decisions of the courts.

“It has further come to our client’s knowledge that the expelled members have issued a notice, purporting to convene a so-called National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, Aug. 28.

“We must make it abundantly clear that any such purported meeting is unlawful, null, and void, being in flagrant violation of binding judicial pronouncements.

“We, therefore, urge in the strongest terms, that INEC must not attend, monitor, observe, or lend any form of recognition to such an illegal gathering.

” To do so would amount to clear interference in a matter sub judice and a direct affront to the authority of the court.

“This correspondence is issued to place the commission on the path of legality and to forestall the necessity of further legal recourse against it.

“We trust, therefore, that INEC will act with the institutional circumspection and fidelity to the rule of law that the Constitution demands,” it added.

NNPP weighs three options ahead 2027 elections

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said it is considering three options opened to it ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying it is open to a lot of political variables.

National Publicly Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson said the three options being considered will be presented to the National Executive Committee meeting of the party scheduled for August 28, 2025.

The three options, he said is whether “to form a kind of alliance or coalition with other parties, remain as NNPP and prosecute the election as individual entity or support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election.

He said the NEC meeting is expected to take far reaching decisions that will impact the future of the party as it strategises for 2027 elections.

Johnson said the crucial meeting will deliberate on the impending congresses and national convention, review the recent bye-election and mobilisation and registration of new members into the party. ‎

He said the party will also deliberate on the ongoing constitution review with a view to presenting a position on critical concerns towards safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

He said the party remained open to a lot of intervening political variables which are essentially tied to its founding principles and values notwithstanding insinuations in the public domain or opinions by analysts  regarding permutations ahead 2027 elections.

‎He said “Specifically, on the various insinuations by analysts and public opinions on where NNPP stands ahead of the 2027 general election, our position remains what we have stated and restated over time.

‎”And this is to the effect that politics is dynamic but that our actions and decisions must be within the context of principles and values. The question of  national interest is also crucial.

    NNPP, APC vow court action

Both the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State have rejected the results in the Saturday bye-election in the state.

While the NNPP rejected results of Ghari/Tsanyawa in which APC won, the latter has rejected the outcome of the Bagwai/Shanono State Assembly won by the NNPP in Kano.

NNPP State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, who addressed a press conference in Kano on Sunday, said the party will challenge the legitimacy of the result in court.

Dungurawa argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the result at its Headquarters in Kano, instead of the collation centre at the constituency.

He also faulted the electoral body for cancelling the entirely 10 polling units that the Appeal court had nullified and ordered for a fresh election.

“While applauding the voters of the respective constituencies, the party wishes to inform the general public that the manipulations orchestrated against the candidate in Tsanyawa/Ghari, re-run election cannot be condoned.

“This is unacceptable and a complete denying electorates their rights to vote, after they came out massively and cast their votes largely to the NNPP Candidate.

“In Ghari Local Government, the election was conducted peacefully at the ten polling units, but some unpatriotic politicians connived with INEC Officials to force the declaration of the APC candidate as the winner.

NNPP vows to challenge APC’s Kano Assembly by-election victory in court

The New Nigeria people’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State has rejected the by-election results of Ghari/Tsanyawa state constituency in which the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) won.

State chairman of the party, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, who addressed a press conference in Kano on Sunday, said the party will challenge the legitimacy of the result in court.

Dungurawa argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the result at its Headquarters in Kano, instead of the collation centre at the constituency.

He also faulted the electoral body of cancelling the entirely 10 polling units that the Appeal court had nullified and ordered for a fresh election.

“While applauding the voters of the respective constituencies, the party wishes to inform the general public that the manipulations orchestrated against the candidate in Tsanyawa/Ghari, re-run election cannot be condoned.

“The NNPP has rejected the election results of Tsanyawa/Ghari, which was declared at the INEC Headquarters in Kano, while cancelling entirely the ten (10) polling units that the Appeal court nullified and order for a fresh election.

“This is unacceptable and complete denying electorates their rights to vote, after they came out massively and cast their votes largely to the NNPP Candidate.

“In Ghari Local government, the election was conducted peacefully at the ten polling units, but some unpatriotic politicians connived with INEC Officials to force the declaration of the APC candidate as the winner.

“In ideal circumstance, elections are supposed to be declared at the collation Centre within the constituency, but INEC decided to make the declaration at its Headquarters at the State capital which gave room for the unpatriotic politicians to connive with INEC and cancelled all the polling units in contention.

“This reverted back to the old election results that was challenged at the court and the court decided in favour of the NNPP; where it said election re-run should be conducted, hence, directed the INEC to do the re-run in the ten polling units.

“This issue is the true show of unpatriotic actions and disenfranchisement of the electorates and stole their mandate, it also discredited the image of the highest electoral body which is INEC.

“NNPP as a party will continue to fight injustice, favouratism, election manipulations against anybody who feels he can use the federal might to disenfranchise the good people of Kano State.

“Moreover, it is very important to know that all presiding officers at the Tsanyawa/Ghari polling units have already signed their election results at their respective collation centers, and only the presiding officers have the power to cancel elections not at the INEC Headquarters,” the party chairman said.

He  described the late Dantata as a titan of integrity, humility, and generosity, whose life was dedicated to service, philanthropy, and devotion to others.

Condoling the family of the late business tycoon, Tinubu said the deceased had embodied the highest values of public service and human compassion.

Dantata, a renowned industrialist who hailed from Kano, passed away at 94 on Saturday morning, June 28, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

He was buried at the Baqiyya Cemetery in Madina, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to fulfill his wish.

“The entire process was seamless and successful, thanks to your leadership and support. We also know your appeals to Saudi Arabia and Dubai leaders, which facilitated the necessary arrangements. For this, we remain grateful,” Governor Yusuf said.

He commended the President for previously sending the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and another federal delegation to condole with the family before personally taking time to visit despite his demanding national schedule.

“We witnessed your relationship with him before you became President. We saw how you engaged with him during his lifetime and reacted to his demise. On behalf of the family, we thank you wholeheartedly,” he said.

Alhaji Tajudeen Dantata assured the President that the family would uphold the values and legacy of their late patriarch.
