Setback for NNPP as Barau receives ex-Commissioner to APC

The gale of defection rocking the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano has continued with Hon. Abbas Sani Abbas joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abbas, who served as the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development in Kano State until last month, announced his defection from the NNPP during a visit to the Kano residence of the Senate Deputy President Barau I Jibrin, on Friday night.

“In the past six months,”according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President on Media and Publicity, Ismael Mudashir in Abuja, “hundreds of leaders of the NNPP from across the 44 local government areas of Kano State have dumped NNPP and the Kwankwsiyya movement together with thousands of their supporters.

“Tagged the ‘Barau Tsunami’, the defections saw thousands of NNPP members thrashing their red caps, the symbol of the Kwankwsiyya Movement in Kano State, and embracing the APC.

“Following the calls by some NNPP leaders that the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, should take charge of governance firmly in the state, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Abdullahi Bichi, and five commissioners, including Hon Abbas Sani Abbas, were sacked last month.

“During his visit to the Kano residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Hon Abbas Sani Abbas announced his defection, pledging to work towards the success of the APC across Kano State and beyond.

“Senator Barau, who is the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, received Hon Abbas, together with the APC Chairman in Kano State, Prince Abdullahi Abbas (Ɗan Sarki, Jikan Sarki), and other party leaders.

“The Deputy President of the Senate assured Hon Abbas, a dedicated grassroots mobiliser, of the APC’s unwavering commitment to building a better future for the people of Kano State and all Nigerians.

“While stressing that APC is big enough to accommodate all lovers of the country, he said they will continue to promote the values of good governance, inclusivity, and service to humanity.”

2027: Peter Obi denies merger deal with PDP, NNPP

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has denied any merger talks with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) or any other party.

Obi made this statement during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, where he addressed the state of the nation.

The former Anambra Governor emphasised that no agreement has been reached with any party as of now.

He also called on all Nigerians to unite ahead of the 2027 elections ilto defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

NNPP condemns police attempts to arrest Kano governor’s spokesman

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has condemned the continued attempts by police detectives to arrest Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesman to Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson, in a statement in Kano, said the police, acting on directives from the headquarters Abuja, were still making spirited efforts to arrest Dawakin-Tofa despite a court injunction restraining them from carrying out such arrest.

Johnson also accused the police of harassing Dawakin-Tofa’s family members.

According to him, the police were acting on a petition filed against the governor’s spokesman by the former governor and National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi  Ganduje.

The NNPP national publicity secretary described the police actions as “abuse of power and violation of the rule of law.”

“Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa has been forced into hiding as a way of hedging against his unlawful arrest,” Johnson said.

He added: “The general public can see the uneasy situation in Kano; officials of the state government are being harassed and intimidated by people abusing power. It is really bad and unfortunate.

“Since there is a court injunction restraining the police, further attempts to arrest Sanusi cast a terrible slur on the image of the Nigeria Police, a sad reminder of similar actions and posturing regarding the power game in Kano over the emirate council.

“NNPP is calling on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, a renowned professional, to ensure the police resist the dangerous slide into partisan politics and to restrain his men from further harassment and intimidation of the Kano governor’s spokesman.

“Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa has his fundamental human rights to be protected by the law and respected.”

NNPP accuses expelled members of plotting disunity amid INEC visit

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused some expelled members of the party of being used by rival political parties to sow discord and create disaffection within the party.

National chairman of NNPP, Ahmed Ajuji, made the allegation during a visit by a team of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials as part of their annual assessment of political parties.

Ajuji claimed that the expelled members have been spreading falsehoods and propaganda, falsely asserting that the management of the party had been handed over to them.

Ajuji emphasised that INEC’s visit to carry out its statutory duty affirms the party’s legitimacy and ongoing existence.

He assured that, despite the efforts of former members, the party would continue to function as the ruling party in Kano State and a strong, constructive opposition across the rest of Nigeria.

He warned that the party will not tolerate members who engage in anti-party activities to do so with impunity, saying “No matter how highly placed, all members are expected to remain disciplined and operate within the ambit of our constitution. The internal mechanisms of our party shall be guarded jealously”.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson said: “The issue of leadership of the party is strictly a Constitutional matter based on the extant statutes and regulations. The judgment purportedly obtained by Dr. Aniebonam and his group at Abia State High Court, Uzuakoli is a ruse and is without substance.

“It is pyrrhic “victory” and confers nothing to Chief Aniebonam and his co-travellers. The judgment is a default judgment that was obtained by fraud and therefore liable to be set aside, which process of setting same aside has already commenced.

“We emphasise that the judgment being paraded by the impostors is a pyrrhic victory that confers nothing but an empty shell because the Orders of courts cannot confer rights or powers over something that does not exist in law in the first place.

“The party with a symbol or logo of a Basket of fruits for which Chief. Aniebonam and his allies  approached the High Court of Abia State, Uzuakoli and purportedly got orders of the said court to take over  its affairs is not a  registered political party in Nigeria and does not exist on the INEC register or website and therefore is unknown to law and is radically different from our  New Nigeria Peoples party whose symbol and logo is academic cap and a book sandwiched between the colours of RED WHITE RED and conspicuously registered as No. 12 on INEC website among other 19 registered political parties in Nigeria.

“This is the only recognized symbol and logo of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission in compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2024”.

He said while the Court has powers only to interpret the constitution and statutes of the land and cannot add or subtract from the provisions of the Constitution, section 222 of the constitution makes provision for the registration of political parties.

He said further that “by the provision of Section 83(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), every registered political party in Nigeria must have its records registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The party with a symbol of basket of fruits has no records with the commission. The name of Major Gilbert Agbo who claims to be the National Chairman is not registered with INEC, none of their purported National Officers has their name registered with INEC, their purported headquarters is not registered with INEC, the Logo or symbol of basket of fruits paraded by the impostors is alien to INEC, the Constitution they are parading is also not registered with the Commission, as mandated by the provision of Section 222 (a), (b), (c), (d) & (f) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“An “unregistered association” with a symbol or logo of basket of fruits not being a registered political party in Nigeria in compliance with the mandatory provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended) as adumbrated above,  cannot by fiat of a judgment of Abia State high court, Uzuakoli Division become a political party in Nigeria to be recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“Most fundamentally, the judgment the impostors are relying on that the party has been handed over to them was a default judgment that was fraudulently obtained through the back door and by deceit and concealment of facts as the Honourable Court was misled by the impostors.

“They fraudulently served the court processes on themselves as New Nigeria People’s Party and concealed the fact that that they did not serve the proper defendants. They concealed the fact that they had earlier approached the Federal High Court, Abuja Division in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2023, a court of coordinate jurisdiction, seeking the same orders and their suit was dismissed.

“The Federal High  Court in its judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Emeka Nwite,  held that Chief Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, Major Gilbert Agbo, Sunday Olaposi Oginni, Hon. Temitokpe Aluko and their co-travellers having been expelled from the New Nigeria People’s Party have lost their rights and privileges in NNPP and therefore cannot sue in the name of NNPP or against NNPP.

“The said judgment was delivered on the 18th April, 2024 and the said   judgment has not been set aside and is still subsisting and is binding on all parties. It is after this judgment was delivered that the impostors, on their series of voyages of forum shopping proceeded to Abia State in a remote village of Uzuakoli and fraudulently obtained a default judgment from a court of coordinate jurisdiction.

“We therefore wish to use this medium to assure our teeming supporters and those willing to join our great party not to be deceived by the propaganda of the impostors parading themselves as National Officers of the NNPP with a symbol or Logo of basket of fruits.

“No such political party exists in Nigeria. The authentic New Nigeria People’s Party registered with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has its symbol or Logo represented by a book and academic gown situated in the middle of RED WHITE RED colours and that is the only logo that would be printed on the ballot papers in all subsequent elections in Nigeria.”

NNPP chieftain urges government to protect citizens’ rights

Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, Southwest chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on both federal and state governments to prioritize the protection of citizens’ rights.

He emphasised that doing so would help rebuild public trust in the government, promote national unity, and unlock the full potential of the Nigerian people.

In a statement to commemorate this year’s World Human Rights Day, Ajadi noted that there was no better time than today to remind the Nigerian government of its responsibility to safeguard citizens’ rights—an essential pillar of democracy worldwide.

Ajadi described Human Rights Day as a reminder of the ongoing need for equality, justice, and dignity for all people globally. Speaking on the 2024 theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” he highlighted the continued relevance of human rights in addressing global challenges.

He pointed out that many Nigerians are enduring untold hardship, with their rights being violated by government agents, either knowingly or unknowingly.

Ajadi urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remind security forces that in a democracy, citizens must not be denied their inalienable rights.

“Let me use this occasion of International Human Rights Day to call on. Our president, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a known supporter of human rights activism in the country, should remind various agents of governments especially the country security operatives that their main duty is to protect citizens’ rights and safety.

“He should let them know that anything to the contrary is not and cannot be identifiable with democracy.

“I also want to implore our human rights activists that as we celebrate today that set aside for our rights, we should not also use the rights given to us to deny other people their rights. Where one person’s right stops, that’s where another person begins.”

    NNPP chieftains defect to APC

Chieftains of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) have defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The defectors are kingsmen of the national leader of the party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The defectors are from Kwankwaso Ward in Madobi local government, where Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 elections, hails from, are among the decampees at the weekend.

Similarly, hundreds of party stalwarts from Gwale, the LGA where Governor Abba hails, also joined the (APC).

A former councillor of Kwankwaso ward in Madobi LGA of Kano State, Yahaya Sa’idu Kwankwaso and other chieftains of the party in the LGA were received into the APC by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin on Saturday.

Hon. Abdulhamid Ahmad Diso, former deputy speaker of Gwale LGA (Diso Ward), Hon. Shu’aibu Isa Kubaraci, and their supporters decamped from NNPP to APC over the weekend.

They cited the impressive developmental strides of Senator Barau in Kano State as their motivation to join the APC.

Also, Garba Alhassan Dawaki led former councillors and members of the PDP from Dawakin Kudu LGA to the APC.

A gale of defection has rocked the ruling NNPP in Kano State since August as the party’s stalwarts from across the 44 LGAs of the state joined the APC courtesy of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin. This is now tagged as Barau Tsunami in Kano State.

Responding, Senator Barau welcomed the decampees to the APC, the largest party in Africa.

He assured them they would be treated fairly and equally like all other party members, adding, “Nobody will be discriminated against. APC is a party for all, where everyone is given equal opportunity”

He said the massive defection of the NNPP members to the APC is a sign of things to come in 2027.

“  As it is now, NNPP is unknown in Kano North. In Kano South, the APC would soon sweep away the remnants of the NNPP there. The party is only known in a few streets in Kano Central.

“We will work with you to fast-track Kano State’s and the country’s development in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to return the country to progress and prosperity,” he said.

  • Court declines to disqualify Edema as NNPP candidate

Court declines to disqualify Edema as NNPP candidate

An Ondo High Court in Akure yesterday set aside the suit challenging the candidature of Olugbenga Edema as the flag-bearer of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for next week’s governorship election.

Delivering judgment, Justice Oluyemi Osadabay, held that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit filed by a factional candidate of the party, Mr Michael Akintan, and his deputy, Mrs Kemi Fasua.

They are challenging the emergence of Edema as the party’s candidate. Edema, a former lawmaker, emerged as the candidate on June 5, after the former candidate, Oluwatosin Ayeni stepped down for him. He chose Dr Rotimi Adeyemi as his running mate.

Ayeni was later made the official spokesperson of the candidate and the Director-General of the Ondo State NNPP Gubernatorial Campaign Council after his resignation as a candidate.

However, in an originating summons filed by Akintan, Fasua, Dr Gilbert Agbo, and Comrade Oginni Olaposi, members of the party, questioned the emergence of Edema as the candidate of the NNPP and his running mate.

In the suit, plaintiffs through their counsel, Monday Mawah sought the court’s judgment on whether, in light of Sections  77 (2) and 77(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, the party was required to submit the register of members to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no later than 30 days before the party’s primary.

The primary was held on April 26.

They also asked whether, based on section 77(3), the defendant, whose name did not appear in the submitted register of the party, could validly claim membership in the party as of the party’s primary date.

The claimants were seeking injunctive and declarative reliefs, including a perpetual injunction to restrain Edema from presenting himself as a member and the candidate of the NNPP for next week’s governorship election.

But the defendants, through their lawyer, Mr Rotimi Olorunfemi, asked the court to dismiss or strike out the suit for constituting a gross abuse of the court process.

Olorunfemi said the suit was supposed to be filed at the Federal High Court, being a pre-election matter. He said the issue of jurisdiction was a matter that would go to the root and the competence of a court with adjudicatory power on a suit before it.

His words: “Since the court has no jurisdiction, the case should be dismissed with cost against the claimants.”

In her judgment, Justice Osadabay struck out the suit for lack of jurisdiction.

She said since the case fell within the pre-election matter, it was only the Federal High Court that could decide to entertain the case.

The judge awarded N100.000 against the claimants.

Edema said the judgment had led to rest the issue of whether he was a member or a candidate of NNPP. He said: “We knew a lot of people who are our adversaries were looking forward to dividing us. But thank God, apart from the judgment of this court, we have come together as a party to be one family.

“So, we are going to walk into this election as one family of NNPP. So, to the glory of God, the people of NNPP should rest assured that their candidate of NNPP is now on the ballot in the eye of the law and squarely. Come November 16,   we will win with the support of the people of the NNPP and God.”

Similarly, Akintan said he was ready to accept Edema as the candidate of the party.

He said the court had decided the candidate and he would abide by the decision.

Edema was also the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

    • No election in state -APC

Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) on Saturday announced that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) swept all the 44 local government chairmanship seats and 484 councillorship seats in the council polls held on Saturday.

KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawal Malurnfashi, who briefed reporters on the outcome of local government elections at the commission’s headquarters in Kano, described the election as credible, fair, and peaceful.

Malurnfashi said: “Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) had exercised and observed its Constitutional mandates of planning, organizing, coordinating, observing and conducting Local Government Election in Kano State of Nigeria.

“The exercise had been largely peaceful and successful in all ramifications. The Commission therefore deeply appreciates the roles played by the critical stakeholders, notably security agencies, media organizations, leaders of political parties, civil society organizations, religious leaders, community leaders, youth and women organizations, towards the actualization of grassroots democracy in the state.”

No LG election held in Kano -APC

Reacting to the Saturday election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it did not participate in the local government council elections held in the state on Saturday.

Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, a chieftain of the APC and former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Kano, said the election was illegal, insisting there was no council election in Kano.

“The Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Simon Amobede still stands, rendering the election null and void,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the APC, he said the party’s decision not to participate was rooted in the Federal High Court’s ruling that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission’s (KANSAIEC’s) leadership was partisan and biased towards the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

“Since this judgment hasn’t been appealed, the APC considers any outcome of the purported election to be illegal, null and void,” he said.

“APC considered three key points for its decision, which included the Federal High Court Judgment, which means the election is null and void due to the standing court ruling.

“The second point is the Partisan Electoral Commission; KANSIEC’s leadership is seen as biased towards the NNPP.

“The second issue is that of Invalid Outcome; Any result from the election will be considered illegal.

“A recent Federal High Court judgment that quashed all NNPP chairmanship candidates, further reinforcing their claims of electoral illegitimacy.”

Bich called on all the APC members to exercise restraint, patience and await the final outcome of their legal battle.

    Election peaceful

The polls which were marred by low turnout of voters, especially in the metropolitan areas, were peaceful.

For instance, at the History and Culture Bureau, elections had not started as at 10:44 am when our correspondent visited the place due to the late arrival of election materials.

It was however observed that though the election had started on time at Tarauni PHC Polling Centre which houses three polling units, there was generally low turnout of voters.

The situation was different at Gandun Albasa Special Primary School where there were 21 polling units, many voters were seen waiting in queues for their turn to cast their votes.

A cross-section of voters who spoke on the election expressed happiness for the peaceful conduct of residents against what had been anticipated.

“Many people had anticipated crisis during the election but thank God it’s peaceful,” one of the voters said.

Also commenting on the election, another voter said he was happy the election was generally peaceful as many residents complied with the order on restriction of movement.

Also speaking, a presiding Officer, Polling unit 002, at Gandun Albasa, Tajuddeen Uba said voting commenced some minutes after 8:00 am and the election was peaceful as voters turned out and cast their votes in a peaceful and orderly manner despite non- participation of the police and other federal security personnel.

In some polling units, voting ended as early as 10 am after receiving the election materials.

In places like Tudunwada, Rimin Gado, Gwale, Municipal, and Bichi, among others, elections were conducted peacefully with voters coming out very early to cast their ballots.

    • Party begins campaign

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) flagged off its campaign for next month’s off-cycle governorship election in Ondo State, with promises to provide free education at all levels.

It said free education would commence from primary to tertiary institutions from September 2025 if its candidate, Olugbenga Edema, is elected governor in next month’s polls.

The party held its flag-off campaign rally in Akure, the Ondo State campaign. Edema, who spoke following his presentation as the party’s flag bearer, lambasted Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for allegedly not spending the two per cent Education Tax Fund appropriately.

Edema said the Education Tax Fund amounts to over N2bn and that it could serve as seed money for the planned free education policy of his administration.

Edema who ruled out voter apathy in the November polls said Ondo State voters would come out en masse to vote and protect the votes.

He said Governor Aiyedatiwa has not been able to account for the N10bn monthly funds from the federation account and N3bn monthly Internally Generated Revenue in the last 10 months.

He said: “The mantra of the NNPP is education for all. As a party, education is key in whatever we are doing. Come September 2025, there shall be no tuition in all our schools. We are declaring free education for all citizens in all our institutions in Ondo State.

“Ondo is not Edo State. Ondo State people are very enlightened. We are capable of protecting our votes. Ondo people will go out to vote. The people are ready for us. We have seen what this present Governor is capable of doing for ten months.

“The two per cent Education Tax Fund has accrued to over N2bn. That is the money that we will set up for free education. It will be our seed money. This is sufficient to pay tuition and WAEC fees. We are winning in all the local government areas. We have studied the pattern of voting and the people will vote for the NNPP.”

The NNPP National Chairman, Ajuri Ahmed said the party would have a good and successful campaign ahead of the election.
