Wike hails PDP scribe Anyanwu as man of integrity, pledges continued support

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, as a man of character and integrity.

Wike gave the commendation on Saturday during the celebration of Senator Anyanwu’s 60th birthday and the public presentation of a book titled “Sam Daddy in My Eyes” held in Abuja.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister also pledged his continued support for the PDP scribe.

Wike said, “My friends and I congratulate you on your 60th birthday and for your victory as the substantive national secretary of the PDP.

“I am happy with the crowd I am seeing here. It shows you’re a man of the people.

“Let me assure you, for people like us, we will stand with you; we will continue to be with you. It doesn’t matter what people will say.”

He told Anyanwu to walk with his head high, having emerged victorious and never beg anyone, nor honour anybody’s invitation.

“Nobody fights a war, wins the war and begs. You have won, the people concerned should come and talk to you and not invite you.

“You don’t fight a war and win, and then people will say come, no, tell them, you, come to me.

“You have people like me, so don’t be afraid; I am here. We have done it before; we will do it again. Some people will not be happy; I am happy.

“When e dey pain them, e de sweet us, as e dey sweet us e de pain them,” he said.

Wike stressed that; “what makes a man is his character and not how much money he has or the food he provides. If you don’t have character, go to hell with your food”.

He said he had always told people to try and show where they stand, and recalled advising Anyanwu to stand firm on the PDP’s Secretary’s crisis because some people were not straightforward.

“Some people are going right, they are going left, they are going front and they are going backwards.

“What they say in the morning, what they say in the afternoon, is it what they will say in the night?

“So I warned him, if you know you will not stand firm, say it now. I also asked him, are you sure you can stand this fight?

“A fight where virtually everybody, including governors, is fighting you, will not be easy, but if you stand firm, you will win.

“However, if you begin to go left and you go right, not only will you lose, you will suffer and he assured me that he will stand firm and will not change,” he said.

The minister, who said he likes people who are consistent in life, praised Anyanwu for being consistent saying, “You have shown me, with what had just happened recently, that you are a man that will stand by his words”.

He equally commended former Senate President Bukola Saraki for attesting to Anyanwu’s steadfastness as a man of his word.

“His mother called me the other day and said ‘my son, I am happy that people like you will take decisions, stand firm and swear not to be disgraced.

“This is what we are talking about, people of character. You don’t buy it in the market,” he said.

Pressure mounts on Wike, lawmakers to intervene in FCT workers’ strike

As the strike by health and education workers across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) enters its fourth month, civil society organisations have raised the alarm over the escalating human cost and long-term damage to society.

In an open appeal addressed to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Area Council Chairmen, National Assembly members representing the FCT, and relevant secretariat heads, a coalition of over 40 pressure groups and well-meaning individuals urged immediate dialogue with striking workers to resolve their grievances and prevent future disruptions.

“True leadership is not in shifting blame but in rising to the occasion to protect those most affected by this crisis, our children, our sick, and our poor,” the statement read.

Under the aegis of the FCT Civil Society Organisations Accountability Mechanism Network (FCT-CAM), the civil society actors demanded that the Minister of the FCT exercises his authority to facilitate a swift and lasting resolution.

The six Area Council chairmen were also urged to act in good faith and prioritise the welfare of citizens above political calculations.

Furthermore, legislators were called upon to leverage their oversight functions and representative powers to push for urgent resolution and policy safeguards.

“This is no longer just an administrative issue; it is a test of our collective conscience. The time for excuses is over. The time for decisive leadership is now,” they said.

The coalition warned that each passing day of inaction endangers lives, jeopardises the futures of children, and constitutes a dangerous failure of governance.

They called on political and administrative leaders to act with urgency and moral responsibility, describing the continued paralysis of essential services as “an unacceptable mortgage on the future of the FCT.”

According to FCT-CAM, which coordinated the appeal, the prolonged strike has left thousands of children locked out of classrooms, with no access to public education.

It noted that as public frustration deepens and the most vulnerable continue to bear the brunt of the deadlock, all eyes are now on the FCT leadership to show that governance can still mean responsibility, responsiveness, and care.

“Our children are roaming the streets. Their learning has been halted. The educational divide between the rich and the poor is widening by the day,” the group said, warning that the consequences of educational disruption at this scale could reverberate for generations.

The appeal was signed by a network of development, health, education, gender, and youth-focused organisations, including the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC), Basic Rights Watch, Centre for Accountability and Inclusive Development, and Health Education Agriculture Development Africa Initiative (HEARD Africa).

Wike okays urgent renovation of IBB Golf Club Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Saturday approved the renovation of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

The renovation, Wike said will commence with the club house.

The minister gave the approval during an official visit to the club’s Board of Trustees headed by the President Appeal Court, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

The development is due to a request by Justice Dongban-Mensem that the club had become worn out due to excessive use and little maintenance since it was opened to play in 1991.

Wike disclosed that Julius Berger would handle the renovation of the club house as the construction firm was the same company that built the golf course years back.

The minister cautioned members of the club using covet means to take over the golf club to steer clear, insisting it remained the property of government.

Wike said; “You know I’m not a golfer. This is my first time of coming here and I have had some interest. My interest is, this is the property of government and I’m very proud for you to manage. When I came here, I was quite impressed. Like you said, there are so many countries made by tourism.

“And if you have people like today, they have an ECOWAS meeting taking place. Now, there may be golfers who want to come and play golf. It’s very key. And that’s why we will not allow anybody to take what belongs to us. We will not allow that. Government is not a good manager”.

The minister said the restoration of the golf course was what anybody who had good taste and meant well for the country would encourage, adding that it is better to renovate the place, open it up and not allow it to degenerate.

“So that when people come in, they have where they can laugh at the club and have their drinks and the rest of the thing. I would take it as part of the emergency that we must do,” he said.

Earlier, Dongban-Mensem had appealed for the upgrading of the golf course in the same way the government had renovated the International Conference Centre.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Abiodun Akanbi, Chief Investment Officer of AICL, reaffirmed the city’s readiness for investment across technology, real estate, entertainment, agribusiness, tourism, and infrastructure.

You lack good taste, Wike replies critics, defends ₦39bn conference centre renovation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has justified the ₦39 billion spent on the renovation of the International Conference Centre in Abuja, asserting that the transformation was comprehensive and befitting of Nigeria’s status as the “Giant of Africa.”

Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Left-Hand Service Carriageway in Abuja, Wike explained that the only part of the conference centre untouched was the block work.

He emphasised that the original ₦240 million cost in 1991 cannot be compared to today’s figures due to inflation and currency depreciation.

“The only thing in that International Conference Centre that was not changed is just the block work. Everything in that Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre was changed,” Wike said in a pointed response to critics.

He added: “They said we did not name the International Conference Centre after someone who built it. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was not built by Nnamdi Azikiwe. Moshood Abiola International Stadium was not built by Moshood Abiola.”

Wike also addressed concerns about the project’s cost, saying, “What was the exchange rate in 1991? Compare the exchange rate to what we have in 2025.”

Brushing aside criticisms over the centre’s renaming and the ₦39bn price tag, the minister stated: “We have taste, we want the best for the country and the president has given the best for the country.”

He further defended his loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, under whose administration the centre was renovated and renamed.

“If you did not do well to defend your boss when you had the opportunity, it is your business. I am here and I will defend my boss. I have done it and I have no regret at all,” Wike said.

The renovated centre, now named the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, was inaugurated by the President on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

  • Tinubu to commission 17 projects across FCT- Wike

Tinubu to commission 17 projects across FCT- Wike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has promised to be part of the commissioning of completed landmark projects across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to commemorate his second-year anniversary in office.

The Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike made this known in Abuja on Wednesday while addressing journalists during the inspection of some of the completed projects in the Abuja city centre.

The Minister stated that the commissioning activities will begin on Tuesday immediately after the Salah holidays with the flag-off ceremony of the newly rehabilitated International Conference Centre.

“I can confirm to you that Mr. President has finally approved commissioning of projects to start on the 10th of June, which is on Tuesday after the Salah holiday and that will start with the International Conference Centre,” the Minister said.

According to the Minister, Tinubu will personally commission 10 signature projects across the FCT, including roads, public buildings, and urban infrastructure.

The Minister further disclosed that the Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent the President to commission three projects while the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and  Speaker Tajudeen Abbas will commission two projects each on behalf of the President, including projects in the area councils.

“I can tell you Mr. President has agreed to commission one or two projects in the satellite towns and then the Vice President will commission and then the Senate President will commission. So, all of them will have a feeling to go to the satellite towns and let the people see that for the first time, they can feel the impact of governance from the federal level and then see their president and the leadership of the country,” he said.

According to the Minister: “On the whole we have 17 projects but because of time, we on our own can do the other commissioning”.

We are very happy that all the promises we made, we have been able to accomplish them. Look at the reactions from the people; if the people are happy, we are also happy. We can’t express how elated we are but we give God almighty the glory and thank Mr. President for all his support”.

He also commended the legislature for their consistent support in ensuring that all budgetary allocations required for the projects were approved on time, which he said has been crucial to FCT’s accomplishments.

“This will not be business as usual. The era of handing over national assets to be mismanaged is over. We will ensure professional maintenance under strict supervision,” Wike asserted.

The Minister used the opportunity to extend his warm wishes to FCT residents for the upcoming Salah celebrations, expressing confidence that security would be maintained to ensure a peaceful and joyous celebration. He urged residents to continue to support the President and to use the Salah period to foster national unity for Nigeria’s collective benefit.

  • I won’t attend PDP activities with Wike, Ortom as members – Lamido

I won’t attend PDP activities with Wike, Ortom as members – Lamido

A member of the National Executive Committee  (NEC) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) Sule Lamido made good his decision not to attend party meetings unless Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and former Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom are expelled.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs was absent at the 99th NEC meeting of the parry at the Legacy House, Abuja, which held on Tuesday.

He also frowned at the continued accommodation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu,  the embattled National Secretary of the party,  whom he said had been rejected by the Zonal Executive Committee of the party.

Though Wike and Anyanwu were not at the NEC meeting, the former Benue Governor and the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Samuel Ortom attended the meeting.

Decked in his Tiv traditional cap and a white kaftan, the immediate past Benue Governor came into Legacy House in company of the PDP Governors Forum Chairman Bala Muhammad.

Lamido, who is also a member of PDP BoT, told reporters in Abuja that the Minister and the former Governor should be expelled for anti-party activities and working against its interest in the 2023 general elections.

The former Jigawa Governor berated the FCT Minister for his alleged resolve to destroy the platform that brought him to political relevance.

“Here is someone who was honoured by the PDP, brought into relevance by the PDP, and now turns around to fight the very party that made him. Wike is, quite frankly, a disaster. What he has done is un-African and un-Nigerian.

“I don’t understand how someone, simply because of his own ambition, can take things so personally and act so destructively. There used to be a party culture that prioritized collective good — something altruistic — but that seems lost now.

“To seal the PDP secretariat — a party that produced you, nurtured you — no matter your grievances, no matter your bitterness, it’s like destroying your own home. He claims he financed the party.

“But is it wrong for a son to take care of his own mother? Does it now mean the mother must submit to the son and take orders from him simply because he’s providing her clothing?

“Wike is thinking in a very warped way. He lacks the values and traditions that define our political culture. I’m glad, however, that President Tinubu intervened. The office was reopened by his order. The very man Wike is trying to please by destroying his own political family is the one saying, “No, you can’t do that.”

He also frowned at the continued admittance of Ortom, who he accused of publicly endorsing the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi at the expense of the PDP candidate in 2023.

“Look at the Board of Trustees (BOT). People like Ortom, who declared support for Peter Obi in 2023, are still members. That’s why I’ve said I will not attend any PDP meeting unless Wike is expelled and people like Ortom are removed from the BOT. I remain a PDP member, but I will not participate in party functions or answer calls to meetings while these individuals remain in leadership.

“How can I sit with someone like Ortom in the BOT to discuss the future of PDP? Or someone like x, who is rejected in his own zone and now being imposed by another zone? These are impostors,” he said.

Lamido recalled how as the National Secretary of the defunct Social Democratic Party, (during IBB Option A4) championed the expulsion of late Arthur Nzeribe from the party.

He expressed regret over lack of discipline in the PDP.

He said: “During our time, the party was supreme. It held full authority, and everyone respected it, whether in the North, South, East, or West. Anyone — no matter how influential — who crossed the party line would be sanctioned.

“Today, people openly working against the PDP are still being tolerated. “Someone like Wike, who claims to love the PDP but is clearly undermining it, should be expelled by the NWC. Why hasn’t that happened?

JUST IN: PDP crisis deepens as Wike ‘pulls out of all agreements’

…says Makinde is architect of party’s crisis

…vows to fight on till justice is served

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared his withdrawal from all previously reached agreements aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pledging to continue the struggle until justice is achieved.

In a personally signed statement on Sunday titled “PDP Crisis: My Position,” Wike expressed concerns over what he described as consistent breaches of agreed resolutions, specifically blaming Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for fueling the party’s internal problems.

“I told Governor Makinde that non-adherence to agreements is the root of the PDP’s current troubles and that he remains the chief culprit in this regard,” Wike stated.

He stressed that the agreements, including the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary in line with the Supreme Court judgment, withdrawal of all legal cases involving Rivers State by the party’s National Legal Adviser, and the immediate discontinuation of the suit seeking a state of emergency in Rivers, must be upheld without deviation.

Wike maintained that since the concerned parties had failed to honour these resolutions, he was left with no choice but to withdraw from the reconciliation process and continue his fight for justice within the party.

The statement read in part, “Since after the 2023 General election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders. To stem this ugly trend, efforts have been made to arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery and enthrone fidelity to agreements with a view to stabilizing the party and moving it forward.

“To this end, a meeting of the G5 was held in Lagos. In that meeting, I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems, pointing out to him that non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly. At the end of the meeting, we resolved to bury the hatchet and make progress.

“As a follow-up to the aforementioned meeting, there was an expanded meeting in Abuja involving HE. Seyi Makinde, HE. Umaru Fintri, HE. Bala Mohammed, HE, Bukola Saraki, and I in Saraki’s guest house. In that meeting, I made it clear that I had no personal problems with HE. Bala Mohammed, except that he hides under the facade of Chairman of PDP Governors Forum to serially renege on agreements. Tensions rose mightily in the meeting and it took all concerned to calm frayed nerves. At the end of the meeting, we came to some resolutions, including: that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the National Secretary of the PDP in tandem with the Supreme Court judgement, all legal matters relating to Rivers State must be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser, the suit on the State of emergency be withdrawn forthwith, and nobody should deviate from the agreements so reached.

“In the light of the foregoing, they pleaded with me to attend the stakeholders’ meeting at the Bauchi Government Lodge, regardless of my many engagements. I attended the meeting and clearly reiterated my earlier concerns, and to this end and in order to resolve all other lingering and pending issues, a committee was formed, headed by HE. Bukola Saraki.

“It is disheartening to note that even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee began its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated. To my chagrin, Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP. I have since granted an interview to the effect that, that resolution of the South-East leaders can not hold.

“Again, Seyi Makinde organized some people in the National Secretariat to insist that the Deputy National Secretary should act as National Secretary, in violation of the agreement earlier reached. To attempt to give credence to this farce, a letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary, calling for a meeting of the NEC of the party. Furthermore, the letter confirming the candidacy of the Governorship candidate of the party in the forthcoming Governorship elections in Anambra State, duly signed by the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu and the acting National Chairman, was portrayed as rejected by the party through a rebuttal letter signed by the National Publicity Secretary, acting on the orders of Seyi Makinde and Peter Mba.

“All these actions are in complete violation of the agreements reached and would not do the party any good whatsoever. On the 24th of May 2025, in Jos, for instance, a well publicized and properly attended zonal elective congress of the PDP was aborted because the letter inviting INEC to the congress was signed by the Deputy National Secretary of the party. INEC refused to attend because the proper signatory recognized by law, that is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was not a signatory to the invitation notice. This is undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least.

“I have painstakingly put out all these facts so that PDP members and the general public would know the truth. I have been in this party since 1998 and have worked tirelessly for the survival of this party with all my strength and it is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party. What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so.

“Most importantly, I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but since it is now obvious that they would continue to play games to the detriment of the party, as is the case in the current debacle in the North-Central zonal elections, I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained.”
