National honours: Obasa salutes Amuka-Pemu, Onanuga, Babarinsa, other journalism icons

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has commended the national honours recently conferred on several prominent journalists for their outstanding contributions to the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

Among the honourees celebrated by Obasa are Sam Amuka-Pemu, publisher of Vanguard newspapers; Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; veteran columnist, Dare Babarinsa; and Dapo Olorunyomi, founder and publisher of Premium Times.

Others include Kunle Ajibade, Executive Editor at TheNews; Seye Kehinde, publisher of City People magazine; Nosa Igiebor, Editor-in-Chief of TELL magazine; and the late Bagauda Kaltho, a senior correspondent with TheNews, who tragically lost his life in a 1996 bomb blast in Kaduna State.

The decorated media icons were among 139 Nigerians honoured by President Tinubu during the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations for their significant roles in promoting and defending democratic values.

Speaker Obasa’s tribute was conveyed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo, in which he praised the journalists for their courage, resilience, and lasting impact on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

According to him, “It is heartwarming to see these journalism greats being honoured for their courage, resilience, and steadfastly using the power of their pen to fight the tyranny of military dictatorship, risking their lives and livelihood, braving the odds, the guns, and arbitrary arrests and imprisonment, to fight for the enthronement, growth, and survival of democracy in Nigeria. They are the true heroes of our democracy. They deserve all the honour bestowed on them.”

Obasa further thanked them for their labour of love and sacrifices for Nigeria and implored them to keep their passion for a better society aflame and alive. He implored them not be slowed down by age or any existential issue.

“The Nigeria you risked it all for is almost here. And we need you to continue to be the watchdog of our democracy,” Obasa stated.

Interestingly, Amuka-Pemu, whom President Tinubu described as ‘a legendary journalist and publisher that has remained true to his lifetime calling’ , could not have got a more fitting 90th birthday gift than the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) title on him. Amuka-Pemu, founder of The Vanguard newspaper, turns 90 on Friday, June 13.

Like Amuka-Pemu; Onanuga, founder of TheNews magazine, and Babarinsa, co-founder of TELL magazine, were also conferred with the CON title. Olorunyomi, Ajibade, Igiebor, and Kehinde got the Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, title.

Conversely, Kaltho, who got a posthumous OON, was one of the journalists who paid the supreme price during the despotic regime of the late General Sani Abacha.

APC primary: Obasa urges tolerance, unity among aspirants ahead of Lagos council polls

Ahead of the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has called for unity and tolerance among political stakeholders in Agege and Orile-Agege, particularly those who contested in the recently concluded chairmanship primaries.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday at Central Primary School, Agege, Obasa appealed to aggrieved aspirants to trust the judgment of party leaders and accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith.

He acknowledged that all the aspirants were qualified to lead but emphasised that leadership positions are limited and governed by due process.

“There is none of the aspirants that is not qualified,” he said. “But we must understand that this is not a family inheritance—it is a political position governed by law and procedure, and only one person can occupy the seat at a time.”

Obasa urged aspirants who were not successful to channel their disappointment constructively within the party and not allow frustration to escalate into conflict.

“I was once a victim like some of you,” he added, “but it is important to keep our grievances within the party and move forward united.”

“But you must learn to exercise patience and have confidence in the process. You must believe in the judgement of our leaders. Everybody is qualified to be a leader but all of us cannot be a leader. Learn to trust the party and its leaders. We must not fight them. If we want to appeal, let’s start now.”

He observed that the forthcoming local government polls is a litmus test test on the 2027 general election reason all hands must be on deck to attain victory.

He added, “We must reach out to others. Let’s make them understand the need to come back. If they didn’t get it today, it will be their turn tomorrow. We must work together. We cannot do it alone. This isn’t the ultimate. We are much interested in the 2027 election. But we will use this to measure what will happen in 2027. This isn’t about the chairmanship and councillorship election; it goes beyond that. Our target is 2027. So, let’s bring everybody out to vote.

“If we can increase the number of votes, we had in 2023 during this local poll then we can go to rest. We must bring everybody together and the journey starts now. We must learn to tolerate one another. We must intensify our efforts and reach out to members of the community to come out to vote.”

Speaking on unity and cohesion among members of the party in the council areas, Chairman, Agege Local Government Area, Hon. Ganiyu Edunjobi, there are no aggrieved members in Agege noting that all members are one and united family.

He said, “We have only one APC in Agege. I don’t understand what you meant by disunity. All I understand is that during election period, many people aspire to the positions. There is nothing wrong in that. About 20 or 40 people can aspire for just one seat but after the primary, its important we bring ourselves together as one to support the party candidate.

“We have the crowd. These are party members. They came out of their desire, nobody forced them. All of these people you are seeing are from Agege. They are here for sensitisation. We want them to go back to their various homes and reach out to others on the need to come out to vote on July 12. There are no aggrieved politicians in Agege. We are one united family.”

His counterpart in Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Johnson Babatunde, described the gathering as solidarity and declaration of support to the party candidates.

He urged the winners at the primaries to be humble in victory while urging the losers to be sportsmanlike in defeat.

He said, “It’s a solidarity with our candidates in Agege local government and Orile-Agege LCDA. In Agege, our chairmanship candidate is Hon. Tunde Azeez while the vice-chairmanship candidate is Abdul-Ganiu Obasa.

“In Orile-Agege, we have Akinola Idowu as the chairman and Wale Fayemi as the vice-chairman. We are here in solidarity and to declare our support that we are solidly behind them. You can see the number of people that are here, that shows we have popular candidates on the ballot.”

Member representing Agege Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. (Dr) Wale Ahmed, described the gathering as an APC event to mobilise and sensitise the masses on the need to vote for the candidates of the party.

He stated, “The leadership of the party has successfully chosen candidates for the forthcoming local government polls. We are here to motivate and energise the people towards the July 12 local government elections.”

Agege Youth Vanguard endorses Obasa’s son for council chairmanship

…buys N5m APC nomination for him

The Agege Youth Vanguard has formally endorsed Abdul-Ganiy Vinod Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, as its preferred candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship ticket ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Agege, Lagos State.

The group made the endorsement public during a press conference held in Agege on Thursday.

Addressing the media, the group’s coordinator, Ismaeel Garba, stated that the endorsement followed a thorough vetting of all aspirants for both chairmanship and councillorship positions across Agege.

“Our decision is driven by a desire to see real development at the grassroots level, and not by any personal or political interest,” Garba said. “We believe the change Nigeria needs must start from the local government level.”

According to Garba, Abdul-Ganiy Vinod Obasa stood out among all chairmanship aspirants based on academic qualifications, professional experience, and community service.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Hertfordshire and a Master’s degree in the same field from Aston University, Birmingham.

He is currently a PhD student at Babcock University and an affiliate member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Professionally, Abdul-Ganiy has worked with top firms including PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Providus Bank, and Parallex Bank, where he served as Head of Performance Management and Strategy.

He also runs a private real estate business and manages a local football academy, VINOD, which has helped launch the careers of several young talents in Europe.

Garba dismissed concerns about Abdul-Ganiy’s political lineage, emphasizing that his relationship with the Speaker should not overshadow his merit.

“We will mobilize all well-meaning Agege residents—including his father—to support him,” he added.

To demonstrate their commitment, members of the Agege Youth Vanguard have contributed N5 million to purchase the APC nomination form for Abdul-Ganiyu.

It also pledged to sponsor nomination forms for seven councillorship aspirants they deemed competent.

He dismissed rumours of a rift among aspirants over the endorsement of Abdul-Ganiyu as the preferred candidate.

He further emphasised that Abdul-Ganiyu possesses the political experience and capacity to elevate Agege local government, having actively participated in numerous political activities and rallies, as well as supported various aspirants in the past.

The group also commended the outgoing chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, for his contributions to the development of Agege, stating that his tenure had seen notable improvements in infrastructure and human capital.

Agege LG: Abiola embraces party decision, backs Obasa’s Son

Mr Oluwagbenga Abiola, Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government and a leading aspirant in the July 12 council election, has welcomed his party’s decision.

He expressed satisfaction with the choice of Abdulganiyu Obasa as the APC’s flagbearer in the upcoming local government poll.

Abiola is a political protégé of Mr Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and APC leader in Agege.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos, Abiola affirmed his loyalty to the party and to Speaker Obasa.

NAN recalls that on Monday, Agege stakeholders urged Obasa to allow his son, Abdulganiyu, contest the council chairmanship.

According to them, this would reward the Speaker’s years of humanitarian service and political impact in Agege.

Reacting to claims that he faced pressure to withdraw, Abiola said he remained deeply grateful to Obasa for shaping his political journey.

He pledged total support for the Speaker’s leadership and said he would never oppose the party’s direction or Obasa’s guidance.

Abiola stated: “Let me make it clear — I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

“This is the man who made me. He appointed me Special Assistant on Media when he became Speaker in 2015.

“In 2016, I was appointed Sole Administrator of Agege LG, thanks to his recommendation to the governor.

“That appointment made me the youngest council boss in Lagos State at the time.

“In 2017, I became Secretary to the Local Government, and in 2021, Vice Chairman — all through the party’s and Speaker’s support.

“So tell me, why would I oppose a man who built me politically and helped me grow in experience and influence?”

He admitted his ambition to become Chairman, but insisted he must submit to the party’s collective decision.

“Yes, I aspired. Every Vice Chairman dreams of becoming Chairman. But the party has spoken, and I fully agree.

“Leaders and stakeholders have united. They’ve asked the Speaker to allow his son contest. I respect and support that.

“I stand with Obasa, with APC Agege, and with all decisions taken by the party and stakeholders,” he added.

Abiola noted that service to people was his true goal and believed more opportunities would come in the future.

“I trust my leader. He knows what’s best and can recommend me for even greater responsibilities when the time is right.

“I’m still young and full of energy. I’ll work for the party and ensure we achieve victory,” he said.

Agege: I stand with Obasa, party decision – Chairmanship aspirant Abiola

Hon. Oluwagbenga Abiola, Executive Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government and a top contender in the forthcoming July 12 Local Government Election, has thrown his full support behind the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to adopt Abdulganiyu Obasa as the party’s flagbearer.

Abiola, a political protégé of Agege APC leader and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, made the declaration while speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Lagos.

His endorsement follows a call by Agege stakeholders—comprising community and political leaders—who, at a news conference on Monday, urged the Speaker to support his son Abdulganiyu for the council chairmanship.

They described the move as a way to reward Speaker Obasa’s longstanding humanitarian contributions to the community.

Addressing speculation that he was being pressured to drop his ambition, Abiola dismissed such claims and instead expressed deep gratitude to Speaker Obasa, whom he described as his political benefactor.

“I will remain forever grateful to Rt. Hon. Obasa for the opportunities he has given me. I pledge my total support for the party’s decision and the leadership of our great party,” Abiola said, affirming his loyalty to both the Speaker and the APC hierarchy.

Abiola said: “Let me just make it clear that I will and can never pitch tend against my leader, Rt.-Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

“This is the man that made me. He appointed me as special assistant on media to the office of the Speaker when he became Speaker in 2015. I won’t be an ingrate.

“After that, in 2016, I became Sole Administrator for Agege LG, being recommended by the Speaker and appointed by the Governor.

“With that appointment, I made history by becoming the youngest local government boss in the state.

“In 2017, when I handed over to the current Executive Chairman, the party and the Speaker also facilitated my appointment as Secretary to the Local Government and in 2021 as the Vice Chairman .

“So, tell me, why would I pitch tent against the decision of such a man that has built me in terms of capacity, political dexterity, and network all over?”.

Abiola said that it was true he had the ambition to succeed the current chairman, but he must submit to the party’s decision “without any reservation”.

“I know that the leader I have is one that knows what is best politically and can also recommend me for, even better positions in the nearest future.

“I’m still young. I still have the vibrancy. I’ll work for the party. I’ll make sure the party wins,” he said.

Lagos LG poll: Stakeholders urge Obasa to let son run for chairmanship in Agege

Stakeholders in Agege local government area of Lagos State have called on the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa to let his son, Abdulganiyu Vinod Obasa run for the council’s chairmanship post.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), recently announced July 12 for the chairmanship and councillorship election across the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs in the state.

Ahead of the poll, aspirants from various political divides have hit the streets and online seeking to be made the candidates of their parties, with report of Lagos Speaker’s son aspiring to run for Agege council chairmanship under the banner of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the spotlight beyond the state.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Agege Stakeholders consisting of community and political leaders in the area called on Obasa to yield to their demand for his son to run for chairmanship.

“It’s our heartfelt wish that Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa rescinds his opposition to our collective aspiration of making Ganiyu Vinod Obasa our next council’s chairman.

“Our agitation stems from the indisputable fact that Vinod has the capacity to take Agege to a new height given his outstanding involvement in community service, experience, exposure and academic achievements.

“This is someone who has first and second degrees in universities in the UK in Accounting and Finance, and currently a PhD student at Babcock University.

“He is equally not lacking in experience having worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC). He later joined Providus Bank before moving to Parallex Bank where he left as the Head of Performance Management and Strategy to start his own business, a going concern in the business of real estate and farming,” the spokesman for the stakeholders at the event, incumbent Executive Chairman of Agege local government, Chief Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi said.

Egunjobi who spoke on behalf of the stakeholders, which include: lawmaker representing Agege 02, Hon. Jubreel Abdulkareem, APC Party Chairman in the local government, Alhaji Tunde Disco, and Chief Safari Aderanijo further highlighted the junior Obasa’s records, saying his football academy, VINOD FA under the umbrella body, Kings Sports, is impacting positively on the community.

“To my knowledge over four footballers from his academy in Agege here are currently in Europe on the verge of signing professional contracts abroad. So we have another Kunle Soname of Ikosi-isheri Local Council on our hands,” the council chair added.

The stakeholders declared that the youthfulness of the Speaker’s son is consistent with what currently prevails in the council administration, adding that their motive for entreating the Speaker to support his son for the council’s chairmanship is to reward his commitments to the growth and development of Agege.

“How old was I when I became the Council Chairman 8 years ago? Same with the Vice chairman during my first term in office, he was much younger than me. Even the current Vice Chairman is way younger than me.

“We consider our earnest desire to have Abdulganiyu as our Council Chairman as a way of rewarding the numerous humanitarian endeavours of the Speaker in Agege land and beyond.

“Obasa has removed several families from poverty in terms of helping them to get jobs in the civil service and political appointments; and for most of us, this is a payback time,” Egunjobi affirmed.

  • ‘Obasa’s removal as Lagos Speaker procedurally wrong’

‘Obasa’s removal as Lagos Speaker procedurally wrong’

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of an Ikeja High Court has quashed the impeachment of the reinstated Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

The court awarded N500,000 to the Speaker as damages.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13 by a majority of the lawmakers.

The court held that the action of the majority of the lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who emerged as the new Speaker then was unconstitutional and illegal.

Justice Pinheiro also set aside other resolutions and decisions made from the controversial sitting of January 13.

The judge declared that by Section 101 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and by Order 5 Rule 18 (2) of the Lagos State House of Assembly Rules and Standing Order, the sitting of the house during recess, without the Speaker reconvening or authorising another individual such as the Majority Leader or Minority Leader to do so was a nullity.

The judge declared that such sitting without the directive of the Speaker was not only illegal, but also unconstitutional.

Obasa began the suit by way of Originating Summons on March 3, against the House of Assembly, his deputy and 32 members of the House of Assembly.

Five other lawmakers were also later joined as defendants by an order of the court.

The claimant had challenged his impeachment following allegations of financial impropriety and gross abuse of office levelled against him by 36 lawmakers.

Though he was reinstated on March 3, after a political mediation by the All Progressives Congress (APC), he pressed on with the case in court through his lawyers, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) and Prof. Joshua Olatoke (SAN) on the grounds that there were “unresolved live issues” in the dispute.

After seven interlocutory rulings, judgment was delivered yesterday.

The 1st, 2nd as well as 3rd to 36th defendants, represented by Femi Falana (SAN), Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Ola Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika, filed preliminary objections.

They had insisted in their applications that the court lacked the jurisdiction to meddle in the internal affairs of the House of Assembly, as both organs of government were equal before the law.

But, the trial judge dismissed their applications, holding that “the court will only intervene where there is breach of the Constitution.

“I agree with the claimant’s counsel that the facts of this case entitle the court to intervene. If the suspension isn’t in line with the constitution, it is right for the aggrieved person to go to court”, the trial judge held.

In another ruling, the court held that the matter wasn’t totally an academic exercise, to the effect that nowhere in the March 3 sitting where the claimant was reinstated nor was any resolution moved nor adopted, which extinguished the contentious proceedings of January 13.

“A suit is academic when it has no benefit, value or relevance to the claimant. It can’t be said to be academic simply because the acts complained of have been corrected.

“The issues of legality of the impeachment are still alive. The claimant’s prayer that records of his impeachment be expunged can’t be said to be embarking on an academic exercise, as the allegations levelled against him are grave and weighty allegations, in which he says his right to fair hearing was breached.”

The judge also said failure to institute the case by a writ of summons, instead of through an originating summons, didn’t vitiate the action, as the court would evaluate the supporting documents filed by all the parties and ensure substantive justice in the matter.

In the judgment, the court held that the rules and standing orders of the Lagos House of Assembly are legally binding on the lawmakers, as they are a subsidiary legislation that complements the constitution.

It also held that fair hearing is a constitutional requirement, which must be complied with.

The court had declared inter alia, that the purported sitting on January 13 wasn’t properly constituted and that the removal of the principal officers wasn’t done in line with Section 92(2) of the Nigerian Constitution since the claimant wasn’t given the opportunity to defend himself, as he was not present at that sitting.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has hailed the Lagos State High Court ruling that declared his removal in January as “illegal, unconstitutional, and null and void,” calling it a victory for the Assembly as an institution.

In a statement issued by his media office, Obasa expressed that the court’s decision was a win not only for him but for the entire Lagos House of Assembly, both current and future members.

He emphasised that the ruling “reinforces the desire for us as members of the House to move ahead in unity and harmony and continue to work for the good of our people, our beloved Lagos State, and Nigeria.”

Obasa urged his colleagues to move past the issue and continue working together in peace and unity for the benefit of the state and its people.

On Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja ruled that Obasa’s removal while he was on an official assignment to the United States in January was illegal, unconstitutional, and null and void. The court also annulled the proceedings and resolutions made by the Assembly on January 13, 2025, during which Obasa was removed from office.

Obasa had filed a suit on February 12, 2025, challenging his removal, arguing that the Assembly was on recess and he was abroad at the time, making the session during which he was ousted unlawful.

He also contended that the session lacked proper authority, with no formal delegation of power from the Speaker’s office. Obasa named the House of Assembly and Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as defendants.

The court’s ruling renders all decisions made during the January 13 session null and void.

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was unlawful and unconstitutional.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro voided the House’s January proceedings and resolutions that led to Obasa’s ouster.

Obasa had taken legal action against the Lagos Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was named the new Speaker, challenging the legitimacy of the process that led to his removal.

His suit was anchored on nine points, citing sections of the amended 1999 Constitution and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
