Obi Cubana urges youths to cash on Tinubu’s programmes for future power transfer

The South-East Coordinator of the City Boy Movement (CBM), Chief Obi Cubana, has urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s youth-focused programmes and policies as a pathway to future leadership and power transfer.

He said the president has shown a strong commitment to youth development, expressing confidence that political leadership would, in time, pass to the younger generation after the current administration.

Cubana spoke in Abuja shortly after he was formally decorated as South-East Coordinator of the City Boy Movement by the group’s Director-General, Mr Francis Oluwatosin Shoga.

The entrepreneur and socialite called on young Nigerians to engage in issue-based politics that would prepare them for leadership responsibilities at the national level.

“At some point, power will be handed over, and there is no other group to hand it over to than the youth,” Cubana said, urging young people to begin positioning themselves for higher responsibilities.

He added that under President Tinubu, a “wind of change” was sweeping through Nigeria’s political space, describing it as a positive development that should be embraced with focus and resilience by the youth.

Cubana further urged young people and his supporters to remain steadfast, avoid distractions and commit themselves to constructive engagement, stressing that discipline and consistency were essential to long-term success.

Earlier, while formally welcoming Cubana, the Director-General of the City Boy Movement, Mr Shoga, noted the large turnout of supporters at the event, describing it as evidence of the movement’s growing momentum.

“We are proud to have you as a leader in the South-East, and we believe a lot of things are going to change,” Shoga said.

He explained that the movement is focused on reshaping the political consciousness of young Nigerians, stressing that active participation is key to changing the national narrative.

“If you are not involved, you can’t change the story,” he said.

Shoga explained that the Movement is working towards grooming young business leaders and professionals for key political positions ahead of the 2027 general elections, including governorship, legislative, and ministerial roles.

Handing over the South East leadership responsibilities of the group to Cubana, the DG said the new coordinator has a big task ahead of him, stressing that he could not afford to disappoint the Movement.

Shoga then called for unity and increased youth participation in politics, as other speakers at the event urged young Ni gerians to organise, engage constructively, and prepare to play decisive roles in shaping the country’s future.

Businessman and philanthropist, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has hosted Seyi Tinubu at his Abuja home.

He used the meeting to reiterate his commitment to inclusive development, national unity, and greater youth participation in Nigeria’s growth agenda.

Speaking after the visit, Obi Cubana said the development of the Southeast and the country at large must rise above partisan considerations and be anchored on competence, integrity, and constructive engagement with those in leadership.

He said, “The development of the Southeast will be an all-inclusive project, politics aside. It will only be possible with good people in positions to advise those in power and help deliver meaningful outcomes for our people.”

The entrepreneur also spoke on recent improvements in security across the South-East, noting that the relative peace witnessed during the last festive season allowed families, investors, and businesses to return home and reconnect with their roots.

According to him, the progress recorded was the result of deliberate efforts by South-East governors working with the federal government to address insecurity in the region.

“For the first time in a long while, we returned home in December and truly enjoyed Ala Igbo. This was made possible by deliberate actions that addressed insecurity. I believe strongly that our region will soon reclaim its place as an economic powerhouse of West Africa, as it has always been. Better days are ahead,” he said.

Reacting to public debates that followed his appointment as South-East Coordinator of the City Boy Movement, Obi Cubana said he was aware of the differing opinions but maintained that meaningful change could only come through engagement.

“Regarding my recent appointment as Southeast Coordinator of the City Boy Movement, I’m fully aware of the varied reactions it has sparked. My belief remains firm: lasting change comes from constructive engagement, not standing apart,” he said.

He stressed that service, integrity, and community development remain the core values guiding his activities.

“Service continues to guide me, and this new role does nothing to alter my commitment to integrity, community growth, and responsible leadership,” he added.

On the need to be actively involved in governance and policy conversations, Obi Cubana said influence was limited from the outside, noting that participation was key to achieving real impact.

“I’ve learned that influence is limited from the outside, so yes, here we are. A City Boy through and through, inside and out,” he said.

He also described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “City Boy and a man of commerce,” stressing that national development requires collective effort.

“Our nation’s leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is equally a City Boy and a man of commerce. All of us need all of us to achieve our national aspirations, and I am committed to carrying every Nigerian along in all that I do,” he said.

Calling for unity and civility in public discourse, Obi Cubana urged Nigerians to focus on value creation rather than division.

“Let’s respect differing views, keep conversations vibrant, and stay focused on building real value. The moment is now, we move,” he said.

He thanked Nigerians for their support and goodwill, reaffirming his vision for a more inclusive country.

Looking ahead, Obi Cubana said he would take further steps in 2026 to deepen youth engagement nationwide, leveraging his private sector experience to support policies and leadership frameworks that empower young people, women, children, and small businesses.

“Where enterprise meets vision and leadership is right, I will always be willing to support and advise anyone in a position of power on how to improve the lives of our youths, women, children, businesses, and future generations. That is what I stand for, progress,” he said.

Obi Cubana is a leading Nigerian entrepreneur with interests in hospitality, entertainment, real estate, and youth empowerment, and is known for his advocacy for inclusive growth and enterprise-driven national development.

Obi Cubana blames solo-ownership culture for African business failures

Billionaire businessman Obi Iyiegbu popularly known as Obi Cubana, has argued African businesses rarely scale globally because owners refuse to share equity or partner with others.

In a video that went viral on Saturday, the tycoon highlighted a stark mindset gap between Western firms routinely pool capital from dozens of unrelated investors to fund complex ventures, while Africans insist on total control.

This lone-wolf approach, he argued, caps growth and dooms companies to die with their founders.

He said: “Why we Africans don’t go far in business is because we want to own it ourselves. Nobody wants to share. You see, But oyibo people, I bet you there might be 20 owners who don’t even know themselves and they come together to make complex project look very simple

“But our problem is that I want to have Obi Cubana and Sons Limited. whether your sons are interested in the business you do or not and that’s why the moment they die, the business dies.

“The moment they are incapacitated, the business dies because there’s no second or third generation to carry on.”

  • EXPLAINER: Does your next of kin automatically inherit your property when you die?

EXPLAINER: Does your next of kin automatically inherit your property when you die?

Popular Nigerian businessman Obi Cubana has stirred debate on social media following a subtle response to his adopted son, Chidi, who recently referred to himself as the businessman’s “next of kin.”

Chidi had shared a post on TikTok with the caption, “Nothing do my shoulder, I just realised say I be next of kin.”

In what appeared to be a reaction, Obi Cubana posted a photo of himself and his biological son, Alex, on Instagram, with the caption: “Ancient and modern, eyes on the ball. @dtwalx aka next of kin.” He went further in the comment section to reinforce his stance, describing Alex as the “correct boy, original next-of-kin.”

The response sparked mixed reactions online, with some netizens criticising Cubana for handling a sensitive family matter in the public space rather than settling it privately.

This controversy has shown that in Nigeria, the term “next of kin” is widely misunderstood, especially among parents and guardians. Many people mistakenly believe that naming someone as their next of kin automatically grants that person the right to inherit their assets or properties upon their death.

Who is a Next of Kin

In Nigeria, a “next of kin” typically refers to a person’s closest living relative or a chosen emergency contact. This individual may be contacted in cases of emergencies, such as medical crises or accidents, and can be required to make decisions on behalf of the person when incapacitated.

The term is commonly used in medical settings, where hospitals contact the next of kin during emergencies or when consent is needed.

Financial institutions, where banks request a next of kin for administrative purposes, not for automatic inheritance, and legal and employment documents for notification or administrative follow-up in critical situations.

What rights does a next of kin have?

Contrary to popular belief, being listed as someone’s next of kin does not grant automatic rights to inheritance.

According to legal experts, a next of kin may assist with legal processes after someone’s death, such as obtaining a letter of administration.

He/she cannot access or claim the deceased’s assets unless explicitly named in a valid will or under applicable inheritance laws (customary, Islamic, or statutory).

A Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, speaking on the matter, explained that, “There is this widespread misconception that if one dies, the fellow’s next-of-kin inherits all his or her assets, but that is not so under the Nigerian legal system. Generally, the question as to who to inherit is determined by law, that is, customary law, Islamic law, English Law, or the Administration of Estates law (or equivalent legislation).

“The law to be applicable in distributing the estate of a deceased shall be determined by the incidence of marriage of the deceased. It follows, therefore, that where a deceased contracted marriage under the Marriage Act, customary law is excluded, and succession to his wealth will be affected in accordance with either English law or the Administration of Estates Law (or equivalent legislation), depending on the jurisdiction. See Obuzez V. Obuzez (2007) 10 NWLR (Pt. 1043) 430.

What are the next of kin’s responsibilities?

Primarily, a next of kin is the first contact point if anything happens to you. The person can make decisions on your behalf in case you are unable to make decisions for yourself. This could come up before your death, whether due to illness, injury, or incapacitation.

Also, the next of kin can play a role in making serious healthcare decisions for the individual. This responsibility is particularly important when the individual is unable to communicate their wishes. Take a situation where someone is in a coma: the next of kin may be called upon to provide consent for medical treatments or end-of-life decisions.

Obi Cubana’s wife speaks amid ‘next of kin’ online saga

Ebele Iyiegbu, wife of billionaire businessman Obi Cubana, has addressed the recent next-of-kin controversy that stirred public interest and online debates.

The issue began after Obi Cubana’s adopted son, Chidi, claimed in a TikTok video that he was named the next of kin. In response, Obi Cubana shared a photo of his biological son, Alex, on Instagram, firmly declaring him as his rightful next of kin.

Weighing in on the matter, Ebele—popularly known as Lush Eby—took to Instagram to share her perspective, criticising how social media often fuels misinformation and unwarranted assumptions about private lives.

She condemned the tendency of online users to spread false narratives and judge wives and mothers based on “misguided thoughts and evil ideas,” adding that most of the commentators know nothing about the real dynamics of the families they discuss.

Despite the online drama, Ebele remained unbothered, stating that her focus is still on celebrating her husband’s 50th birthday, which featured a grand #50for50 celebration.
