Nobody has lived up to 80 in my family – Obi Cubana

Billionaire Obi Cubana has explained the reason for his mother’s lavish burial ceremony in 2021.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Cubana revealed that his family has a history of not living up to 80 with his father, grandfather and uncle all passing away before that age.

Determined to break this “generational curse,” Cubana encouraged and celebrated his mother’s birthdays, hoping she would live up to and beyond 80.

Although she passed away at 78, Cubana and his siblings decided to honor her with a grand burial, using the savings they had set aside for her 80th birthday celebration.

He said: “In my family, I am saying it for the first time: nobody has lived up to 80. My father died at 66, my father’s brother died at 75, my grandfather died at 78, and I told my mum, you will break this. I told her to break it if it’s a generational curse or something. I promised her that for the burial I would throw for her, nobody would break, and we started saving up for that.

“I think she died on 31st December; she was 78 and a half, and we were all looking forward to her 80th birthday. But what happened happened, so let’s celebrate her. At least she almost broke it”.

Socialite and businessman Obi Cubana, whose real name is Obi Iyiegbu, has shared a thought-provoking message on Instagram about wealth accumulation and enjoyment.

According to him, the children of poor men are acquiring the properties of rich men, while the rich often fail to enjoy their wealth during their lifetime.

Cubana noted that the children of rich men are sometimes forced to serve the children of poor men who have become successful.

He advised people to strike a balance between acquiring wealth and enjoying it, quoting a Nigerian proverb that highlights the importance of enjoying one’s hard-earned wealth.

He concluded by emphasising the importance of using one’s wealth for the greater good and not letting it become a source of pain and oppression.

“Today the children of yesterdays rich are serving the children of yesterdays poor…..

“The poor men’s children of yesterdays are busy buying out the properties of rich men of yesterdays, from the children they acquired and left those properties for! It’s the cycle of life!!!

“Funny enough, most of the rich NEVER enjoyed the luxury of the wealth they were busy acquiring while alive!

“Our people have a saying ‘ọlu ụnọ na-amuta ole ụnọ’ Translated ‘the builder/acquiring man gives birth to a seller-son…..’

“Last line: While you toil and work very hard to acquire, make out time to enjoy the proceeds of your hard work!

“Most importantly, may your acquired wealth be beneficial to mankind, and not a source of pain and oppression….…

“Time is ticking, and nothing lasts forever……SELAH!”
