Obidient movement not domiciled in any political party – Obi

Mr Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has said that the Obidient Movement is not domiciled in one political party.

Obi said this in a statement by his spokesperson, Dr Yunusa Tanko, on Thursday in Awka.

He said that membership of the movement cut across political party, tribe, religion or geopolitical region.

“I like to categorically state that the Obidient movement is not a directorate in any particular political party.

“Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement.

“There may be a youth mobilization directorate in political parties but the Obidient movement is far beyond a particular political party.

“The Obidient Movement is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends traditional political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.

“It is not domiciled within any particular party or headquartered in any particular part of the country, its membership spans across Africa and the globe, comprising individuals from various backgrounds,” he said.

Obi further said that the movement was propelled by a shared vision guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, and democratic values.

He said that loyalists of the movement were seeking to foster positive change through a commitment to integrity, honesty and accountability by rejecting deceitful behaviours.

“I want this to serve as a clarification that the Obidient Movement operates independently, and that its membership is not limited to any particular party.

LP crisis: Obi shuns NLC, endorses Julius Abure-led NWC

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi has endorsed the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure and the National Working Committee(NWC).

This followed Obi’s visit to the LP’s national headquarters in Abuja on a solidarity visit on Tuesday.

The former Anambra Governor was received by Abure and other party leaders.

This marks a change of heart for the former Anambra Governor, who earlier shunned the party’s controversial national convention, which was held in his home state, amid the leadership crisis that rocked the party.

During the visit, Obi endorsed the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) of the party led by Abure.

Obi’s decision may pit him against the Nigeria Labour Congress which has called for the sacking of Abure and the NWC.

The NLC Political Commission rejected the national convention which returned Abure as the national chairman of the party.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh on Tuesday, Obi urged aggrieved party members to put the survival of Nigerians and Nigeria first above all other interests.

Obi said he was at the national secretariat on a visit to the chairman and would continue to strive to bring all warring parties over the crisis in the party to become united.

He said: “For now, let us talk about how we are going to survive till then because we politicians always focus on the next election and not about human beings.

“For me, when they survive the next election, we can talk about the election. Let us focus on Nigeria and see that Nigeria works; if Nigeria is working, the Labour Party will work.”

Abure said the party’s NWC was appreciative of the visit of the party members and the presidential candidate.

He said it was high time the varying groups of dissenting voices over the Nnewi convention came together and set their personal interests aside and worked for a party that would make a good show in the next election season.

“I want to say this very clearly, the convention has come and gone; all those who are still angry with us over the Nnewi convention, we want to appeal to them to come together and work with us to build the party for a new Nigeria that has a vision.

“I believe very strongly that personal interests should be put aside in pursuit of a new Nigeria that will work for all,” Abure said.

Obi donates N10m to nursing school in Anambra

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has donated N10m to the College of Nursing Sciences, Adazi-Nnukwu, Anambra state for the training of more nurses and the upgrading of their facilities.

The former Anambra state governor reiterated his firm commitment to building a better society through investment in critical areas of human development, namely education, health, and poverty alleviation.

Obi said this in a statement issued by the spokesman, Peter Obi Media Reach, Yunusa Tanko said this in a statement on Tuesday, May 21.

He said: “I have remained consistent in my advocacy for more aggressive investments in the critical areas of education and health, especially for the training of nurses, who are at the heart of our health sector. Different health organisations have continued to warn about the impending shortage of nurses on the global level. By investing in the training of nurses, we will be able to produce enough qualified nurses to fill the gaps created by the shortage.”

Obi encouraged them to remain committed to their nursing education.

He described nursing as a noble profession that cares for the well-being of people, nurtures the health of all, and heals the wounds, pains, and infirmities of the sick and weak in society.

“I remind you, my dear nursing students, that nursing is a noble profession in which you will find fulfilment by serving society. I wish you well and urge you to continue to work hard as nurses as we unite our efforts in building a New Nigeria.”

Obi lauded the proprietor of the College, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, and the management and staff of the College for their dedication and hard work in investing in the future of nurses and, by extension, contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s health sector.

“Through many decades of producing qualified nurses and midwives, the College of Nursing Sciences, Adazi-Nnukwu, has contributed immeasurably to the growth of our health sector and the development of our human infrastructure.

“By your labours and sacrifices, you have continued to produce well-trained nurses who make positive impacts both within the nation and in the international health sector,” Obi said.

Ezeokafor lauded the firm commitment to societal development shown by Obi.

He said Obi has continued to advance the cause of humanity both in and outside public office.

Ezeokafor revealed that Obi has remained consistent in his support for societal growth.

He stated that Obi’s record of investment in societal development remains unbroken.

He appreciated Obi for always going out of his way to ensure the development of the nation.

Head of the Department at the College of Nursing, Mary-Michael Ezenwuba recounted past contributions from Obi, including the donation of two coaster buses, an 18-seater bus, the construction of a two-story administrative building, a two-story hostel, and numerous cheques for ongoing improvements.

She emphasised that Obi’s support has been unwavering from before his tenure as governor to the present.

  • Obi knocks FG, CBN over cybersecurity levy

Obi knocks FG, CBN over cybersecurity levy

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the Federal  Government’s introduction of a 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy on all bank transactions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday directed banks to commence the collection and remittance of a cybersecurity levy on electronic transactions to be administered by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

But the former presidential candidate described the move as a sad imposition on struggling Nigerians.

Obi argued that the Cybersecurity Levy contradicted the government’s declared intention to simplify the tax code and cut back on taxes to lessen the impact of Naira depreciation and high inflation rate on the trading capital of businesses.

In a series of tweets on his X handle, the former Anambra Governor governor faulted the move in totality, questioning when the NSA’s Office turned into a revenue-collection hub.

He said: “The introduction of yet another tax, in the form of Cybersecurity Levy, on Nigerians who are already suffering severe economic distress is further proof that the government is more interested in milking a dying economy instead of nurturing it to recovery and growth.

“This does not only amount to multiple taxation on banking transactions, which are already subject to various other taxes including stamp duties but negates the Government’s avowed commitment to reduce the number of taxes and streamline the tax system.

“The imposition of a Cybersecurity Levy on bank transactions is particularly sad given that the tax is on the trading capital of businesses and not on their profit hence will further erode whatever is left of their remaining capital, after the impact of the Naira devaluation and high inflation rate.

“It is inconceivable to expect the suffering citizens of Nigeria to separately fund all activities of the government. Policies such as this not only impoverish the citizens but make the country’s economic environment less competitive.

“At a time when the government should be reducing taxes to curb inflation, the government is instead introducing new taxes. And when did the office of the NSA become a revenue collecting centre?

“And why should that purely national security office  receive returns on a specific tax as stated in the new cybersecurity law?”

    • ‘My focus on how to make Nigeria work, not 2027 polls’
    • Ex-Anambra governor upbeat on amicable resolution of LP crisis

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in last year’s general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has faulted the construction of new roads while existing one are in a state of disrepair.

Obi said his criticism of the 70,000-kilometre coastal highway was based on the reality that many roads across the country needed urgent repairs to put them in a good condition for users.

The former Anambra State governor said this in a statement by erstwhile spokesperson of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “I cannot embark on a new road when we can’t connect our states and cities in all the geopolitical zones because of bad roads. I will first fix the roads and move the economy.”

Responding to a question that he did not build any new school when he was governor of Anambra State, Obi said those making such a claim were unaware of his manifesto.

The LP stalwart recalled that when he was Anambra State governor, education was in shambles, schools were closed, and the state was Number 26 in the country.

According to him, by the time he left, Anambra was Number One in the country.

“I improved the quality, physical and mental well-being of the people. The schools had the basic things they needed and the people shone like stars and that was my manifesto. Building new schools when the old ones are moribund is just like building coastal lines when internal roads are impassable,” Obi added.

Also, the LP stalwart said he remained focused on seeing Nigeria working and not on the 2027 general election.

“Only God can tell who can run for an election in future. My interest now is the poor and how to see Nigeria work,” Obi said.

The former governor said the crisis rocking the party would be resolved amicably as it is not beyond what could be handled peacefully.

“What is happening in the Labour Party is child’s play compared to what is going on in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he added.

Obi urged rich Nigerians to do more for the poor by providing water and education, especially.

The LP stalwart said 70 per cent of the wealth of Nigeria is in the hands of about one per cent of Nigerians.

He noted that if one cent of the population of about 200,000 rich Nigerians could deploy their resources for the basic needs of the poor, the situation would not be as deplorable as it is currently.

Obi urged government at all levels to deploy resources to raise the living standards of the poor and pull them out of poverty.

Obi announced the completion of the construction of 10 boreholes in some northern states for a short-term water supply for the poor.

He said if 200,000 rich Nigerians joined him to do the same in the areas of their choice, it would go a long way to solve the water needs of the poor.

Obi open to peaceful resolution of Labour Party crisis, says spokesman

Some members of the Labour Party(LP) on Monday stormed the venue of the stakeholders meeting organised by the Political Commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Abuja, asking the NLC President, Joe Ajaero to stop interfering in the affairs of the party.

The LP members asked Ajaero to focus on “fighting the anti-people policies of the Federal Government,” Instead of fighting the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure.

The supporters accused Ajaero of plotting to take over the affairs of the party.

Ajaero and Abure have been on each others’ necks over the running of the party.

The NLC Political Commission accused Abure of organising an illegal convention where he (Abure) was returned elected as chairman of the party.

The NLC declared the convention illegal and called for the setting up of a caretaker transition committee to organise a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention.

The crisis within the party deepened last month with the founding fathers of the party calling for the sack of Abure.

The former presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi, called for the peaceful resolution of all contending issues within the party.

Obi, who was represented by the spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, called for the setting up of two committees to resolve the crises in the party.

Acting Chairman of the Political Commission of the NLC, Prof Theophilus Ndubuaku further said the meeting would set up a transition committee to organise an all-inclusive convention.

  • 2027: Obi, Obidients not our concern now, says Presidency

2027: Obi, Obidients not our concern now, says Presidency

Thoughts and activities of the followers of the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in last year’s presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, will not distract it President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration, the Presidency has said.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who ruled out the possibility of the administration being distracted, also accused the former Anambra governor of introducing a dangerous slant to politics by deploying religious and ethnic sentiments.

Onanuga spoke in a chat aired on Mic On Podcast.

Obi’s supporters (also known as the Obidients), have been critical of government policies Tinubu took the baton of leadership.

However, reacting to a question on whether Obi’s politics and his followers could posing a threat to President Tinubu’s chances in 2027, Onanuga said the administration has no time to entertain thoughts about 2027 politics yet.

He said: “As of now, we are busy with governance and we don’t want our attention diverted from the focus of what the government is trying to do. We are very busy, we’re not even looking at them now.”

Speaking about Obi’s political style at the last election, he said: “What I know about the campaign of Obi was that for the first time in a very long while in our country, we had a candidate who was inflaming ethnic passion and that was the way the election went at that time, he was inflaming ethnic and religious passions, bringing two dangerous things to our politics; ethnicity and religion. That was what he did and those things were dangerous to our politics.”

Asked if he believed some opponents want to intentionally sabotage the Tinubu administration, the Presidential spokesman said: “Of course, it is very clear unless people are not perceptive. Up till now, some are still writing that Bola Tinubu stole the presidency and some people are saying that the man who came third actually won the election, and they are very unapologetic about that.

“How could somebody who came third how could he have won that election? You can even see when they were talking about the naira, some people were just happy that the Naira was going downhill. You can trace them. People who are saying so are members of the Obidient movement.”

He debunked the belief in some quarters that President Tinubu also employed religious tactics, especially in his choice of a deputy, noting that the choice of Vice President Shettima was basically because of his other qualities and not his religious persuasion.

He said: “If Asiwaju did that, he wouldn’t have lost Lagos”.

He said the safe faith ticket of the APC at the polls “was not religious. You could see that the Muslim/Muslim ticket did not win him massive votes, let’s say in Borno, where his deputy came from. For the man he picked as his VP, he believe that Shettima has the qualities to be his vice president and that’s why he picked him, he was not looking at religion.

Read Also: 2027: Obi, Obidients are not our concern now, we are busy with governing Nigeria – Onanuga

“Let me give you an incident. We went somewhere recently and we found out that most of the people in the media section of this government are actually Muslims. I was born a Muslim, but it was mere coincidence, when they were picking them, nobody was looking at their religion.

“When President Tinubu was picking Shettima as his vice, he was picking Shettima and not looking at him as a Muslim. He was looking at Shettima, from the Northeast part of the country, who can add values to his campaign, to his winning the Presidency.

“Shettima earned the vice presidency because of his contributions to that campaign; he was with him all the way, even before the primary. When you want to appoint someone to work with you, you have to count loyalty, it’s very vital. Even the quality of the person is also very important and you can see what Shettima has been doing; he’s loyal to the President and he has shown a lot of qualities as Vice President.”

Asked to compare President Tinubu with his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Onanuga said it would be too early to be drawing conclusions on performances as President Tinubu is barely a year in the saddle.

He however said that the two leaders have their human differences and different ways of attending to issues, noting that the former president had been unfairly judged by many commentators

According to him, Buhari tried his best for the country, especially in the area of infrastructure development and the enrichment of the legal system.
