    Kwankwaso-Obi flight of fancy

While Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara was busy fulminating against his opponents in the midst of the supremacy battle between former vice president Atiku Abubakar and FCT minister Nyesom Wike, ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi were forging ahead uproariously in their anticipated political marriage of convenience. Speaking in Hausa in a video clip hosted on X (Twitter), the former Kano governor surprised Nigerians when he indicated his willingness to be Mr Obi’s running mate in the 2027 presidential poll should certain conditions be met. That possibility was briefly explored in 2023, but it was discarded as both unfeasible and farcical. Dr Kwankwaso, who was New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last poll, is mercurial and opinionated, while Mr Obi is superficial and bigoted. It would be hard for the two points of view to meet; but given their desperation for power, they have not stopped tantalising the electorate with the prospect of a joint ticket.

It is not known why the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) felt compelled to respond to the rumour of a Kwankwaso-Obi ticket, seeing how absolutely tenuous it is, but they poured scorn on the idea and argued its unworkability. Indeed, perusing Dr Kwankwaso’s Twitter statement, and given the many direct and indirect caveats he alluded to, the idea of the two governors running on a single ticket seems terribly far-fetched. According to the former Kano governor, “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically, I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder, I performed better than him when I was a governor of my state. I’ve no problem with deputising Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met. We are willing to engage in discussions, provided that trust is established.” Having stacked the deck against Mr Obi, it appears non sequitur for him to offer to play a subordinate role to someone he indirectly denigrates. He did not of course indicate what conditions must be met for him to deputise Mr Obi, but two explanations emerge from his statement: either he never meant a word he said about running on a single ticket with the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, or he knew that his unstated conditions could never be met, with the onus for failure resting squarely on the narrow shoulders of Mr Obi.

Dr Kwankwaso of course exaggerates his worth. He may have a PhD, and is thus a little better ideologically moored than the former Anambra governor, but in terms of political size, it is hard to see the former Kano governor commanding anything more than a sizeable fraction of Kano. It is incontestable that as governor he performed better than his Anambra counterpart, especially seeing how indistinguishable and platitudinous Mr Obi was and has remained, but Dr Kwankwaso did not also leave Kano a considerably changed state than he met it, at least not on the ‘unforgettable’, howbeit illusory, scale of Caesar Augustus who “…found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble”. When the two former governors differently campaigned for the presidency in 2023, neither made any serious reference to their legacies, nor spoke grandly to visionary ideas and projects. All the things they said and did were fairly humdrum and commonplace.

By speaking to a possible joint ticket with Mr Obi, Dr Kwankwaso underscores the point everyone knows already, that an Atiku candidacy would be a tough sell in 2027, not only on account of his age and the attendant lethargy it brings, but also because of political equity. Rotational presidency may be an informal and fortuitous formula for national peace and stability, but it has seemed to serve the country fairly well as well as appeared to lower tension. Whether the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders manage to heal the fractures in their party or not, it is unlikely Alhaji Atiku will be adopted as presidential candidate by any serious party. And if he is selected, it is unlikely he will command votes on the scale he managed in 2023. Dr Kwankwaso knows this, and even suspects that the country will be in no mood to break that North-South rotational formula. He is of course himself not a principled man, and he may be fishing for a coalition that will project him into higher office, but it is hard to see the joint ticket he waffled about with Mr Obi amounting to anything.

After regaining control of Kano, Dr Kwankwaso is predictably seeking other adventures, probably at a much higher political level than the governorship. Like Alhaji Atiku, everything about the former Kano governor is ambition and higher office, or at any rate, public office. He and his cohorts hijacked the NNPP, but they have neither turned it into an exemplar nor fine-tuned its platform or ideology to make it irresistible to the electorate. It will remain a special purpose vehicle for winning elections and maintaining relevance. Worse, he has not worked on himself. He is as truculent as he was years ago, and his ideology more amorphous than it is practical. His ad hocism and vengefulness bloomed during and after the Kano governorship campaign. And even though he is book intelligent, there is little else about him. He prides himself on his charisma, but that appeal finds fulfillment only in Kano State for reasons that should worry him. Yet he seems unaware of his many limitations, not to talk of his many illusions. Like many other politicians, he snickers at the fickleness of the electorate, believing that if the circumstances are right they could be led by the nose to vote for a ticket as implausible as the one he flirts with.

Beyond the religion and ethnic factors, the distinctly unideological Mr Obi has no other issue to campaign with. Yes, he is a perfect fault-finder and an incurable idealist, but in 2027, he will have no grounds upon which to campaign. Like Alhaji Atiku in the PDP, his identification with LP is based on exploitation, not symbiosis. He neither shares affinity with the party nor does he have sympathy for it, whether it dies or lives, whether it grows or is stunted. It is significant that Mr Obi is not any less opportunistic than either Alhaji Atiku or Dr Kwankwaso, but this inconvenient fact will not discourage him from the grand posturing and grandiloquence that hallmarked his campaigns and public life. The former Kano governor gibed at him about his unremarkable time as Anambra governor, but he doesn’t care. After all, like his university certificate, he did not use his governorship legacy to campaign in 2023, preferring to stick to the inflammable issues of ethnicity and religion. In 2027, he will still not use his eight years in Anambra to campaign given the chance to be on any presidential ticket, notwithstanding whether the LP survives its ongoing war of attrition. And having not developed the interest in improving himself beyond the frenzied and unnatural manner he is seeking friends and contacts all over the country, and lacking in intellectual and analytical depth on all counts, he will be hard put to find and sustain issues on which to anchor his campaign.

The LP foot soldiers have welcomed Dr Kwankwaso’s offer, with supporters of both politicians jousting over who between the two leaders possesses the higher market value. They are all tilting at windmills. Not only is an assessment of the two men too early, it is also unclear whether two years down the line, both of them would still possess any market value at all. They are not the best their states can produce or offer, and it is not even certain that regardless of their flaws they will have anything to recommend them.

Obi criticises outcome of Edo governorship election

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the results of the recent Edo State governorship election, stating that it “fails to reflect the democratic process we adopted for electing political leaders.”

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, described the election outcome as a “clear case of state capture” that undermines Nigeria’s democratic principles.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared All Progressives Congress candidate Monday Okpebholo the winner of the election on Sunday.

The commission said Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes.

The Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, managed to get 22,763 votes.

Commenting on the outcome of the election, Obi said: “What happened over the weekend in the name of election in Edo State does not in any way represent the democratic process we chose as a method of electing our political leadership.

“Instead, it was a blatant example of ‘state capture’ and continued gross undermining of our democratic process and values.

“Any nation whose leadership recruitment process is so fatally flawed is doomed, and we are all seeing the effect in our country.

“I urge those in authority not to allow this situation to stand, or depend on it to remain in power.

“As a country, we have invested significantly in the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and they must be allowed to function and used properly to free our electoral process from the massive falsification that has plagued it and worsening.

“To the agencies and individuals being used to undermine our democracy simply because they hold positions of authority, please remember that your time in office is not eternal. The society that you are helping to destroy today will eventually take her revenge on you tomorrow.

“To the lecturers and others complicit in perpetuating this charade, you must reflect deeply on the roles you are playing in damaging the very foundation of our democracy.

“The damage you are causing today will inevitably take revenge on you tomorrow and affect your children in the future.

“This kind of action has no place in a true democracy. That is why I have always maintained that today’s politics is not about capturing power, but about saving the country and making it work for everyone, regardless of their background.

“I remain committed to building a new and truly democratic Nigeria, which I insist is very possible.”

ADC threatens legal battle against Soludo, Obi over N3 trillion LG funds, IGR in 20 years

…rejects planned Sept 28 council polls

The National Chairman of the African Democratic  Congress (ADC), Chief Ralphs Okey-Nwosu, has threatened to commence legal action against the Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, and former governor, Mr. Peter Obi, over the local government fund not less than three trillion naira from the federation account to local governments.

The action, he said, would equally include other past governors for allegedly mismanaging Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the last 20 years in the state.

Nwosu also rejected the date of the planned local government elections in the 21 councils of the State by Soludo and his cronies, scheduled for 28 September 2024.

AD, made this known to reporters in Awka at the weekend while revealing that it was the usual practice not to conduct local government elections to pave the way for a governor to put his lackeys as local government administrators.

The ADC helmsman said more than a trillion naira were allegedly misused by the governors within the reviewed period

According to him, “The recklessness must stop; that a governor with an economic background doesn’t want democracy to thrive at the local government area level. They must not do the 28th September 2024 Local Government level.

“It’s really condemnable that somebody as learned as Governor Soludo is running away from democracy. The best is to call for a collaborative meeting of stakeholders to iron issues out.

“If Soludo goes the way he’s doing, the local government system will derail, look at the audacity of state governors to oppose the direct remittance allocations from the centre to the councils.”

Nwosu, also, attributed the amendment and haste to conduct the council polls to a purported pecuniary interest in the federal allocations to the councils. “The governors have been intolerant. They don’t want the local government system of administration to succeed.”

Nwosu said, under the Inter-party Action Committee (IPAC) at the national and State levels, “we’re going to consolidate our support for the move and appeal to the President to sign the bill into law necessitating the direct transfer of allocations from the federation account directly to the council coffers.

“IPAC will challenge the newly-inserted clauses in the just-amended local government elections law and ensure the reversal of the Anambra State Electoral (Amendment No.2), 2024.”

The party leader faulted one of the newly inserted clauses in the Constitution which barred national chairman of political parties from dealing with issues affecting their parties in the council elections

“We’re supporting the National Assembly (NASS), and other actors with political will in this move to save and revive the local government system to its responsibilities, and that is why Anambra State Government is rushing to conduct council elections so as to claim that the State had concluded its elections before the law came into force.

“APGA is scared of losing the governorship election coverage 2025, hence “the party has resorted to arm-twisting tactics to use the conduct of the council polls to capture all the 21 local government areas, and use them as a launch pad to secure a second term in the next governorship election.” Nwosu said.

    • I’m waiting, says president’s aide

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has asked the Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, to retract the allegation linking him with the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 to 10.

Obi also asked the presidential aide to pay him N5 billion as damages ‘for the embarrassment your defamatory publication has caused me and my family’.

According to a statement by Peter Obi’s Media Reach, Yunusa Tanko, the former presidential candidate made the demands through his lawyer, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN).

Onanuga, on his X handle @aonanuga1956, had alleged that ‘Peter Ob’s supporters are the people planning mayhem in Nigeria and that Obi should be held responsible for anarchy’.

Ejesieme wrote: “The allegation which was widely published in social and mainstream media and read by many within and outside the country maligned his hard-earned reputation as a man who indulges in violence, when all his antecedents are vivid that he abhors violence even in the face of extreme provocation.

“It’s our client’s conviction that the publication was a calculated plot to demean, ridicule, humiliate and embarrass him by the estimation of every right thinking member of the society.

“The allegation may have achieved its insipid motive as well-wishers from all around the globe have inundated Obi to register their shock.

“We have our clients mandate to demand that you retract the statement and tender an unreserved apology to him within 72 hours of the receipt of this letter in not less than four National Dailies to wit: Vanguard, THISDAY, Punch and the Cable, including your verified X“@aonanuga1956.

“Our client is also making an unequivocal demand for the monetary damage of N5 billion for the embarrassment your defamatory publication has caused him and his family.

“If fail to meet the demands, our client shall be constrained to approach a court of competent jurisdiction and take legal action against you for defamation and libel.”

But Onanuga yesterday chided Obi, saying he was still waiting for the letter from his lawyer.

“I am still waiting for the letter from Peter Obi’s lawyer threatening a N5 billion suit and demanding an apology over the planned ‘revolution’. Let me just tell Obi and his lawyer: I am not afraid of any legal action. We shall meet in court,” he said on his verified X handle.

    • Blames PDP for hardship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted the continued criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration by Peter Obi, describing it as ‘a showcase of his obsessive devotion to self-promotion against the best interest of Nigeria’.

APC noted that Obi’s statement yesterday, on the country’s economic situation, is ‘an admixture of half-truths, blatant distortions and misinformation calculated to mobilise outrage against the APC government of President Tinubu’.

A statement yesterday by the National Secretary, Felix Morka, said the former Anambra State Governor has continued to unabashedly criticie the government to promote his personal interest.

The statement reads: “His warped conclusion that Nigeria’s economic crisis was caused by nine years of APC-led administration is a highly revisionist, dishonest, distorted and deliberately misleading assessment of the country’s economic trajectory in the last decade.

“He opined, rather mischievously, that no efforts were being made by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tackle poverty and unemployment in the country. But against Obi’s submission, the country’s economic misfortune began under the watch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The facts tell a far more complex and different story. The country’s economic decline began under the watch of the PDP with growth plummeting from 7.98 per cent in 2010 to 2.79 per cent in 2015. And since 2015, the global oil price crash, geopolitical tensions, climate change, global COVID pandemic and rising population, have all taken a toll on Nigeria’s economy that is almost entirely dependent on drastically reduced oil export earnings.

“The growth recorded during the PDP years was due entirely to high price of crude oil and increased government spending that it supported.

“It is noteworthy that between 2007-2014, Nigeria earned $531.2 billion under the PDP, compared to $287.8 billion under APC between 2015-2022. This drastically reduced export earnings under the APC administration, even further stretched thin by the country’s population surge from 184 million in 2015 to 229 million in 2024.

    Obi decries state of economy

One-Time Anambra State Governor Peter Obi yesterday decried what he called lack of progress of Nigeria’s economy in the past nine years.

According to him, the economy maintained an average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of about 6.72 per cent for 16 years (from 1999-2014), adding that the economy peaked as the largest in Africa in 2014.

He lamented that the “impressive growth trajectory, unfortunately, was not sustained by the administration that took over 16 years after Nigeria returned to democracy.

According to him, the GDP growth collapsed to 2.79% in 2015 and then recession in 2016 with a negative growth of -1.58% and 0.82% in 2017.

Obi, who took to his X handle (formerly twitter) on Monday, lamented that no effort was being made to address the growing poverty and unemployment in the land.

The tweet was shared by Yunusa Tanko accused the Federal Government of “funding luxury lifestyle.”

Obi’s tweet reads: “When Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999, it maintained an average GDP growth of about 6.72% for 16 years from 1999-2014. “The impressive growth trajectory, unfortunately, was not sustained by the then-new government and our GDP growth collapsed to 2.79% in 2015 and then recession in 2016 with a negative growth of -1.58% and 0.82% in 2017.

“For the past nine years, Nigeria’s economy has seen unprecedented retrogression on many fronts. In 2014, just before the inception of a new administration a year later, Nigeria had the biggest economy in Africa with a GDP of $568.5 billion and a GDP Per Capita of about N3200. Our economic indices pointed towards hope and prospects for the future growth of the economy.

“Nine years later, the giant of Africa has retrogressed to the 4th largest economy in Africa. Reports showed our GDP in 2023 stood at $375 billion with a per capita of $1700. In 2024, our estimated GDP declined further to $253 billion with an estimated per capita of $1087. This portrays how our 9 years journey since 2015 has resulted in a sharp decline in our national prosperity.

“Today, poverty is on the increase. Unemployment is rising. Food inflation is skyrocketing. Our foreign and local investors are losing faith in the future growth of our economy and are leaving. Businesses are shutting down. Urgent actions need to be taken to salvage the nation from further collapse and move it from consumption to production!

Obi: my political ambition about people

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said his political journey is about caring for the people.

In a veiled response to the accusation that he is behind a planned protest against the presidency, Obi urged the presidency to channel its ‘energy and resources towards helping everyday Nigerians who are struggling to find their next meal, secure education for their children, gain employment, and access adequate healthcare’.

In a tweet on X (formerly twitter), Obi noted that the future of ‘our country depends on addressing these urgent needs, not on perpetuating deceit and lies’.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga had accused the former presidential candidate and his supporters of being behind the ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest planned for August 1 to 10.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who have sent me good wishes and supported me over the years. Your encouragement strengthens my resolve to work towards a better society for all, especially the less privileged.

“To those who have chosen to spread falsehoods and lies about me for their own gain or at the bidding of their paymasters, I am equally grateful to you. I urge you to channel your energy and resources towards helping everyday Nigerians who are struggling to find their next meal, secure education for their children, gain employment, and access adequate healthcare. The future of our nation depends on addressing these urgent needs, not on perpetuating deceit and lies.

“My political journey has never been about desperation or personal gain, it is rooted in principles and a genuine care for the people. Rather than fabricating lies, you and your paymasters should listen to the cries of the poor who cannot afford medicine and who are uncertain about their next meal. Pay attention to the voices of reason from individuals and institutions that emphasise the plight of our citizens. Let us unite in building a nation where everyone can thrive.

Protest allegation by presidency ploy to arrest Obi – Media office

The Peter Obi Media Reach has dismissed the allegation linking former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi to a planned protest.

The media office described the allegation by Presidential Media Aide, Bayo Onanuga as wild, wicked and baseless.

In a statement by POMR spokesman Yunusa Tanko on Saturday, the media office said the presidency was planning to use the planned protest to arrest its former presidential candidate, Obi.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Peter Obi Media Reach, POMR has been drawn to the wild, wicked and baseless allegations by one of the Spokespersons in the Presidency, Bayo Onanuga accusing the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi of being the mastermind of a planned protest in the country.

“The statement even said that Obi should be held responsible for any mayhem that may occur in the protest. But POMR can report from good and reliable authority that these unsubstantiated allegations are being orchestrated to arrest Obi, limit his freedom and association and stop his propagation for good governance which they find injurious to their lavish lifestyle.

“Peter Obi by his mien in and out of political office has not in any way shown or been associated with violence even in the most obvious provocations. He has always shown even during the electioneering that he is issue-driven as he carries on without calling anybody’s name.

“POMR is also aware that multiple attack dogs have been hired and strategically deployed to ensure that Obi does not enjoy the ear of the Nigerian populace who are keen on hearing his voice on issues.

Notable challenges of the administration which are a consequence of their actions and inactions like fuel subsidy fallouts, growing poverty in the land, inflation, nepotism and unresolved historical conflicts among others they blame all on Obi.
