Presidency faults Obi’s ‘democracy has collapsed’ remark

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed the assertion by former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, that democracy has collapsed, describing it as hyperbolic and lacking logical foundation.

Onanuga, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), criticised Obi’s comments, during a colloquium to mark the 60th birthday of former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Imo Governor, Emeka Ihedioha.

He argued that democracy in Nigeria has remained resilient over the years and has continued to strengthen since 1999.

“I listened multiple times to former Governor Peter Obi’s statement in this clip, where he claims that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria. His hyperbolic remarks, suited for headlines, have been made without deep reflection and lack a solid logical foundation,” Onanuga stated.

He questioned how a democracy that has endured and grown over the past 26 years could be said to have collapsed, adding that Obi himself is a beneficiary of the free speech provided by the system.

“Only a discontented and disgruntled Peter, who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides, could perceive such a democratic downfall through his lens.

” If democracy had indeed collapsed, as Peter claims, and we were living under a regime antithetical to democratic principles, he would not have been able to make his comments on Monday at Emeka Ihedioha’s colloquium,” he added.

Onanuga further urged Obi to be more cautious with his statements, warning against what he described as playing to the gallery.

Obi, at the event, had argued that democracy in Nigeria had suffered a serious setback due to the actions of the current leadership.

“They started in 1999, they laid the foundation, some people came and took it a decking, and some people were trying to raise it to the first floor, and some people came and knocked everything down. That’s the situation we are in right now. Everything has been knocked down, nothing works,” Obi said.

Citing his personal political experiences, the former Anambra governor claimed that the judicial and democratic institutions that once upheld fairness and justice had deteriorated.

“I became a governor through the courts. When (former) President (Olusegun) Obasanjo and Atiku (Abubakar) were in government, I did not pay the courts one naira; I was sitting in my house, in an office, and the court declared me winner,” Obi recalled.

He further compared past democratic interventions with the present situation, lamenting that the independence of democratic institutions had eroded.

“Today, the president impeaches the person. And they were begging in my house not to impeach me, and they were in PDP, I was in APGA. Even when I was impeached, President Obasanjo called me and said, ‘Are you okay? Are you safe?’ I couldn’t believe it. Now the president (referring to the present administration) will ask him not to come back here again,” he said.

Obi maintained that the system was failing and required urgent attention to rebuild it. “Let’s not talk about it. Let’s talk about how we are going to rebuild it. It’s collapsing,” he said.

Don’t uphold emergency rule in Rivers, Obi tells National Assembly

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 general election Peter Obi has called on the  National Assembly and all stakeholders not to allow emergency rule in the state.

Obi, in a post on his X handle, argued that decision by President Tinubu was not in the interest of democracy and the well-being of Rivers people.

He added that the action was against the rule of law and capable of undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

The former Anambra State governor warned that the development was capable of undoing the progress the country had made in its 26-year democratic journey.

The post reads: “The situation in Rivers does not justify such an extreme measure, it is also a biased interpretation of Section 305(1) of the 1999 constitution.

“A state of emergency does not mean that an elected governor can be removed unilaterally.

“The decision does not align with democratic norms and good governance. It appears to be a predetermined action serving specific interests rather than the collective good of Rivers people and Nigeria.

“This action constitutes an unconstitutional overreach, setting a dangerous precedent that threatens democracy, the rule of law, and the separation of powers.”

    • APC slams PDP over Udom’s trial, says party lacks credibility

The Governors’ Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied speculations to the effect that five of its members are supporting a potential Nasir El-Rufai/Peter Obi presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

A statement issued by the Director General of the Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, condemned the rumour as “unpleasant and provoking publications” pushed by elements determined to undermine its credibility.

Agbo asserted that such baseless claims are part of a broader strategy by “negative forces” to question the leadership of the Forum amid ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria.

The Forum is led by the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed.

According to the statement, “the PDP Governors’ Forum is not in consonance with these actors, neither does it enjoy any ambience of political space to discuss nor seal the auction of the PDP through lowlife grifters who are allegedly working behind the scenes to support a ‘potential Nasir El-Rufai/Peter Obi presidential ticket in the 2027 election’.

“As a formidable party, all organs of the party have continually been engaged in attaining reconciliation across the board and reconsolidation of progressive development made in our Subnational to ameliorate the lives of our people.

“It is obvious that these mischief makers and detractors, who are bewildered at the way and manner PDP Governors are daily performing to pull the people out of economic hardship despite the intimidation by the ruling APC, are only intimidated and can only throw mud at our good works.

“In the world of politics, rumours and speculations are common. As such, we will not allow these ‘Enemies of Progress’ and ‘Agents of Confusion’ to gaslight the Nigerian people to draw wrong and erroneous conclusions.”

According to the Forum, the unfounded allegation is only part of desperate ploys by some factions within the party.

The statement criticized these actors for their attempts to finance low-willed factions and create a one-party entrapment, aiming to split opposition and subvert democratic institutions.

Emphasising the PDP Governors’ Forum’s unwavering commitment to the party’s core values—equity, social justice, accountability and the sanctity of the electoral process— Dr. Agbo reassured the public that the body remains united.

He stressed that irrespective of internal challenges within the PDP, the Forum will support the party’s eventual flag bearer chosen through a disciplined and democratic process to wrest power from what he termed the “non-performers at the centre.”

The press statement also highlighted ongoing efforts at reconciliation and consolidation within the PDP and denounced the attempts by political opportunists to misinterpret laws and distort party policies for personal gain.

“The dreams of the founding fathers of our great party will not be in vain,” the statement concluded.

Atiku: I’m for coalition but remains PDP member

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, says he remains determined to see the actualization of a multi-party coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027 but would not defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A statement by his media office titled “Atiku remains a bona fide member of PDP” and released in Abuja last night, roundly condemned increasing speculations suggesting that the former Vice President is plotting to dump the PDP.

It said: “We have observed that some news platforms are peddling unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party.

“We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic.

“Recall that Atiku Abubakar had persistently called for a coalition of opposition political parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election with the aim of ousting the incompetent and pain-inflicting All Progressives Congress, in order to  give Nigerians a new lease of life.

“Atiku is still advocating a robust coalition that would accommodate all opposition parties – the PDP inclusive.

“Hence, it is fallacious and unfounded to allege that the Waziri is jumping PDP ship.

“Such an allegation is antithetical to the objective of the grand coalition, which the former Vice President is currently driving alongside other prominent political leaders in the country.

“We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bona fide member of the PDP, the main opposition party.

“Any insinuation to the contrary is contrived to confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition that is at work to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC.”

Udom’s trial: You have no virtue anyone can discredit, APC tells PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday described as unfounded the allegation by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio has engaged a section of the media to smear the image of former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, in the ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) trial.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in a statement on Friday, alleged that Akpabio compromised sections of the media to circulate falsehood, misrepresentations and baseless allegations of corruption against Emmanuel with the sole aim of discrediting the opposition party.

Reacting to the allegation, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement yesterday, said the opposition PDP has lost in the hall of honour, stressing that as an expired and an already discredited party, there was nothing left to be discredited in PDP.

Exonerating the Senate President of any complicity in the ordeal of the former governor, the ruling party argued that Akpabio remained “laser-focused on weaving a strong legislative pillar of support for the bold and transformative reform agenda of our determined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” than to be involved in Emmanuel’s trial.

The statement reads: “In its characteristic absurdness, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed that it was privy to “a well-oiled scheme” by His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, to “compromise a section of the media to engage in smear campaign through circulation of falsehood and misrepresentations against Udom Emmanuel, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State,” as part of efforts to “discredit the PDP”.

“It is rather comical that the PDP thinks itself capable of being discredited when it knows quite well there is absolutely nothing left of it that can be discredited, even by the most strenuous effort.

“The PDP has done a fantastic job of stripping itself bare of purpose and prestige, and needs no help from anyone, certainly not in the calibre of the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly.”

Dismissing the allegation, Morka maintained that “the PDP offered no iota of information to substantiate its madcap allegation.  To be clear, the President of the Senate has no involvement in any smear campaign or in instigating the country’s anti-graft agencies against Udom Emmanuel.

“The PDP and Udom Emmanuel must know that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are agencies with wide statutory powers to investigate and prosecute cases of corruption in our country.

“If Udom Emmanuel has been invited by the agencies, he should quietly go and answer to the allegations. It is not, and should not become an occasion for PDP to cast lots or go berserk about imagined political foes they allege may be behind the allegations.

“Public officials from across political parties and the private sector have faced scrutiny by anti-graft agencies. Udom Emmanuel’s case cannot and must not be an exception.

“The former Governor should only be concerned about reacting to the allegations and clearing his name.”

Throwing jabs at the opposition party, Morka argued that one “would think that decrepit PDP would keep itself usefully occupied in search of therapy for its self-inflicted paralysis, and finding a courageous Volunteer Aspirant to fly its tattered flag in the November, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State.

“The PDP and Udom Emmanuel should leave the President of the Senate out of their hot mess. Senator Akpabio remains laser-focused on weaving a strong legislative pillar of support for the bold and transformative reform agenda of our determined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “

Tinubu, Obi, Abiodun, others mourn Doyin Okupe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heart-felt condolences to the family, friends and associates of former presidential spokesman, Dr. Doyin Okupe.

The President was joined by Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi in paying tributes to the deceased medical doctor and politician.

Okupe, a former Special Assistant on Media and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonatahn respectively, reportedly passed on at a Lagos hospital after years of battling with prostate cancer.

In his condolence message yesterday, President Tinubu described Okupe as a bold and articulate advocate for national development.

The President regretted that the Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign in the 2023 elections passed on at a time his wealth of experience remained invaluable.

He also sympathised with the government and people of Ogun State, particularly Okupe’s Iperu-Remo community, noting that his death has left a void behind.

Tinubu prayed for the repose of Okupe’s soul and divine comfort for his loved ones.

On his part, Governor Abiodun, in a statement issued in Abeokuta by his Special Adviser on Media, Kayode Akinmade, described Okupe’s death as a personal loss, noting that his death came not long after the demise of the traditional ruler of Iperu-Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo.

He paid tribute to Okupe’s patriotic service to the nation and described him as a committed member of the progressive political family.

Governor Abiodun said: “Receiving the news of the passing of my elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has left me with a profound sense of personal loss.

“Without a doubt, his departure leaves a void that will not be easily filled.”

Obi on his part acknowledged Okupe’s contributions to the nation’s medicala and political sectors.

2027: Why Tinubu, Atiku, Obi shouldn’t contest, by ex-LP chieftain Okonkwo

    • Obi’s ex-campaign council spokesman resigns from LP
    • Cites unresolved internal crises, leadership disputes

A former member of the Labour Party (LP), Kenneth Okonkwo, has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr. Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside from vying for the presidential seat in the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo was the spokesman of the LP presidential campaign team in the 2023 general election, working alongside Obi, who flew the party’s flag in that poll.

But two years down the line, the Nollywood actor-turned-politician has backtracked from his support for Obi, asking the LP stalwart, Atiku and President Tinubu to step aside for other candidates.

Speaking on Channels Television’s evening programme, “Politics Today”, Okonkwo shared his thoughts on why he wanted the trio to give way for other candidates in the next general election.

He said: “I said it and I maintain it because in Nigeria, people will not give you their mandate and you treat it with levity.

“You must do everything decisively to secure it. Unfortunately, nature has bestowed on us the duty that in Nigeria, you will not only win an election but you have to fight for your mandate.”

The former LP chieftain said though he worked with Obi in the 2023 election, that is now in the past.

“I still maintain that. Whatever happened in 2023 should stay in 2023,” the actor said, ruling out backing the former Anambra State governor in the next general election.

He resigned from the party yesterday, citing internal rambles in the Labour Party.

The former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ruled out returning to the ruling party.

“I resigned [to leave APC] on principle,” Okonkwo insisted but gave only one condition to return to the party.

“Let me tell you, I will be the first person to admit if the APC changes today and is doing well for Nigeria.”

He accused the ruling party of failing to address the country’s challenges.

Earlier yesterday, Okonkwo announced the resignation of his membership of the LP.

He cited unresolved internal crises and leadership disputes that have plagued the party for two years, following the 2023 presidential election.

In his resignation letter, dated February 11, 2025, Okonkwo expressed gratitude to Nigerians who supported the party during the presidential election.

He said: “I thank, most sincerely, all Nigerians of goodwill for the immense support given to us during the 2023 presidential election.”

Okonkwo attributed his resignation to the party’s inability to reposition itself for the next presidential election.

“The Labour Party, as presently constituted, is not in a position to be part of that political force that will determine the political future of Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the party’s current state is “non-existent” due to the expiration of the tenure of its executives and the lack of effective leadership at the national level.

The former LP presidential campaign council spokesperson criticised the party’s former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and his colleagues for prioritising personal interests over the party’s survival.

Okonkwo said: “It’s obvious that Abure is not interested in the survival of Labour Party as he is interested in the survival of his pocket.”

Okonkwo’s resignation takes effect from February 25, marking the second anniversary of the 2023 presidential election.

He pledged his continued loyalty to fellow Nigerians and hinted at joining other like-minded individuals to chart a new course for good governance in the country.

Tems’ victory was a significant milestone, as she emerged victorious in a highly competitive category featuring other notable Nigerian artists.

Obi reiterated commitment to building a nation that fosters growth among youths and helps them discover and harness their individual talents.

Presidency to Atiku, El-Rufai, Obi, others: we’ll meet in 2027

    • No alternative to APC, says Masari
    • Why opposition leaders can’t be president, by Lukman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is ready for any challenge from opposition leaders during the 2027 general election, the Presidency said yesterday.

It faulted comments by the political opponents against the administration, describing them as “distracting” and “Machiavellian.”

The Presidency advised the leading opposition figures and other critics – Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Mr. Rotimi Amaechi – to wait till the next poll before they flex muscles.

According to the Presidency, the activities of the opposition leaders are premature.

“This is 2025, not 2027. Let those who want to test their popularity with Nigerians wait for the next election,” Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, said.

Also peeping into the future, former House of Representatives Speaker and ex-governor of Katsina State, Bello Masari, said there was no alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, Salihu Lukman, said some of the opposition figures lacked the quality of leadership, urging them to drop their presidential ambitions.

He said: “Based on their records, they exhibit intolerant dispositions and poor relationships on account of which they have mismanaged their transitions and are today hardly in control of political structures in their states.”

At a two-day democracy conference in Abuja, Atiku, 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Obi, and former Katsina State Governor El-Rufai fired salvos at the Federal Government, saying that it was not living to expectation.

Atiku alleged that the ruling party had doled out N50 million as a bribe to each of the opposition parties to disorganise and silence their leadership.

El-Rufai, a chieftain of APC, alleged a lack of internal democracy and active party structures within the ruling party.

“I no longer recognise the APC. No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show,” he said.

Amaechi called for “brutal force” to take from President Tinubu in 2027, adding that if he had been president, he would have run the country differently.

Taking an exception to the comments, Dare, in a post on his verified X handle, urged Nigerians to scrutinise the antecedents of these politicians.

He described the attacks on the Tinubu Administration as predictable attempts to stir controversy while the President was away in Tanzania addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges.

“While the President was seeking solutions to Nigeria’s energy problems in Dar es Salaam, some ‘wannabes’ were heating up the polity,” Dare added.

The Special Adviser described the recent Abuja gathering as an effort to spread ill will, noting that some participants resorted to undemocratic rhetoric.

“Expectedly, it was a gathering convened to further spread ill will.

“Nothing new came out of the gathering different from the opposition script we are used to,” Dare stressed.

He urged Nigerians to scrutinise the antecedents of these “political gladiators” and choose between “political hecklers and real progressives.”

Dare emphasised that President Tinubu remains focused on his mandate to improve the lives of Nigerians and build a resilient economy, despite the distractions.

“The only conversation he wants to have now is how to improve the lives of Nigerian citizens and constructive discourse on building a resilient economy,” he said.

Dare assured Nigerians that President Tinubu, an “avowed democrat,” remains “undistracted and unperturbed” by the opposition’s tactics.

Masari: No credible alternative to APC

Masari said that there was no credible alternative to the APC administration.

He spoke in Kafur, Kafur Local Government Area, during the flag-off of the campaign for the Katsina State local government elections scheduled for February 15.

He said: “The news making rounds in the social media that some politicians are teaming up for merger is nothing but regrouping of those who lost political favours in the APC, in terms of appointments or patronage.

“Their attempt to form an alliance will not divert the attention of APC from conceiving and implementing programmes that could assuage the pains of the common man.”

Masari urged Nigerians to exercise more patience with the APC administration, adding that the harsh economic hardship is a global phenomenon.

He added: “I am in APC today, tomorrow and always because I am not in the party for any political position or appointment.”

The former governor urged  APC loyalists to propagate the good works and ideals of the party, pleading with them to take any shortcoming as a human error.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Political Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir-Masari, urged APC members to close ranks and work assiduously to ensure the success of the party at all times.

He said the president had awarded a contract for the reconstruction and upgrading of  the Zaria/Malumfashi/Funtua/Yashe Roads, in a bid to facilitate socio-economic activities.

The presidential aide also said the president had approved the establishment of a Federal College of Agricultural at Nabanje, Masari.

He added: “I can assure you that more developmental projects will be awarded to the people of the area in due course.”

    ‘Amaechi’s remarks inflammatory’

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) chided Amaechi for making inflammatory remarks about the Tinubu administration.

It hailed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who warned the former Rivers governor against rhetorics.

AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima, said Amaechi incited violence to destabilise the country.

Shettima said Matawalle had sent a clear message that such behaviour would not be tolerated and that those who engage in it would face consequences.

He said leaders at all levels should take a firm stand against any form of speech that could lead to violence or civil unrest.

Shettima said Amaechi’s comment constituted a threat to national security, adding that his action undermined the democratic process.

Lukman: Atiku, Obi should drop ambitions

Lukman advised Atiku, Obi, Senator Kwankwaso and El-Rufai to drop their presidential ambitions and provide leadership for the proposed opposition political party.

Lukman, former APC National Vice Chairman (Northcentral), said in a statement: “Based on laypersons legal knowledge, many of these politicians would be adjudged to being accessories, whether before or after, to our current political travesty.

“Some of them, on account of their influential roles in past administrations and the failures of those administrations should be humble enough to take a backseat to build a strong coalition to strengthen Nigerian politics.

“Instead, it is more like a case of unrepentant show of shame.”

Lukman lamented that the mindset of most opposition leaders is more inclined towards blocking political competition in the country.

He stressed: “The truth is that any political leader who is prioritising the debate about power shift over and above building a strong political party, which can set the rules and enforce it, may only be hiding behind such arguments to impose himself/herself and perhaps invariably continue the political practice of emperors and dictators.”

    Atiku kicks

YESTERDAY’S reaction to opposition leaders’ criticisms of the Federal Government by the Presidency is an attack on democracy, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s Media Adviser Paul Ibe, has said.

The one-time vice president, former governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Nasir El-Rufai have been under attack for condemning the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

In a statement, Ibe claimed that Dare’s statement showed “the Tinubu administration plans to take the next election in the country as ‘a combat and a fight”.

He said the Tinubu government should unite and heal the nation and desist from making careless remarks about other countries.

The statement reads: “It therefore, becomes pertinent to tell the Tinubu administration that last week’s gathering of political leaders across the country is aimed at fostering the ethos of democracy in Nigeria, making sure that elections in Nigeria are credible, and that democracy is the vehicle for progress and social justice in the country.

“We find it curious that the Tinubu government would react to these noble ideals as ‘Machiavellian inclinations

2027: Drop your presidential ambition, Lukman tells Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso others

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, former National Working Committee (NWC) member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Moh’ Lukman, has advised key political figures to abandon their presidential aspirations and instead provide leadership for a proposed new political party.

Lukman urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to prioritize party-building over personal ambitions. He also extended the advice to former APC members and opposition figures, including Rotimi Amaechi, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, titled “Re: Early Outline of the Permutations for 2027”, Lukman reacted to the recent National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria. He argued that if these leaders set aside their personal ambitions, it would prevent the imposition of candidates in 2027 and foster a stronger political alternative.

The former Director General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) also criticized the political class, stating that many opposition and displaced politicians lack the necessary credentials to emerge as better leaders.

He maintained: “Based on laypersons legal knowledge, many of these politicians would be adjudged to being accessories, whether before or after, to our current political travesty. Given their records of service, they are most likely to be worse than former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and now President Tinubu.

“Based on their records, they exhibit intolerant dispositions and poor relationships on accounts of which they have mismanaged their transitions and are today hardly in control of political structures in their states. Some of them, on account of their influential roles in past administrations and the failures of those administrations should be humble enough to take a backseat in effort to build a strong coalition to strengthen Nigerian politics. Instead, it is more like a case of unrepentant show of shame.”

He further said: “Just imagine Alh. Atiku Abubakar, or Mr. Peter Obi, or Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, or or Dr. Kayode Fayemi, or Sen. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal or Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, or other opposition and displaced leaders with ambitions to contest becoming leaders of the new party. Imagine all these people decide that in order to lay a solid foundation for the emergence of strong party, all of them or majority of them will instead aspire to become part of the leaders of the new party.

“Certainly, if that happens, the new party can guarantee collegiate leadership similar to what we had in second republic political parties especially the NPN. Failure to have that could simply mean that the new party risked being oriented in old ways with political culture of imposition becoming dominant.”

Lukman noted that in the last one year, he has engaged virtually all the aforementioned leaders on the need to cut a new trajectory of taking the path of honour and providing new political leadership to the country.

According to him, “The new desirable political leadership required is that of selflessness, which can unite both politicians and citizens in the country in a new direction. The new direction if it has any potential to strengthening Nigerian democracy should promote political competition both internally within the new party and nationally.”

He however lamented that the mindset of most opposition and displaced political leaders is more inclined towards blocking political competition in the country.

“The truth is that any political leader who is prioritising the debate about power shift over and above building a strong political party, which can set the rules and enforce it, may only be hiding behind such arguments to impose himself/herself and perhaps invariably continue the political practice of emperors and dictators. Everything must be done to depart from that and create new political reality in the country.”

APC slams Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai over criticisms at Abuja conference

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday criticized former PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai over their remarks during the recently concluded 2-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed their positions as baseless and misguided.

He accused Atiku of repeatedly blaming the APC for issues within his own party, describing his claims as “like a broken record.”

At the conference, Atiku alleged that Nigeria’s democracy was being undermined by judicial interference in electoral matters.

He further accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of paying N50 million to certain opposition leaders to destabilize rival parties, a claim APC dismissed as unfounded.

The APC also criticized El-Rufai’s recent remarks against the party, stating that they were unwarranted.

Morka emphasized that the opposition leaders’ comments reflected their inability to engage constructively on issues critical to national progress.

In his reaction the governing party said: “It was in the Atiku era as Vice President, particularly in 2003 and 2007, that the PDP conducted the worst elections in our political history. We cannot possibly forget how Atiku’s PDP heavy-handedly captured most South-West states and vowed to remain in power for 60 years. It was in those same years that Atiku’s former boss and then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, infamously described election as a “do or die affair” in a desperate attempt to annex Lagos.

“If democracy was neither derailed nor endangered in those perilous days, is it now that elections are by far freer, fairer and more credible that Nigeria risks losing democracy?”

APC noted that the judicial branch of government is a constitutional creation like the executive and legislative branches with its constitutionally defined powers to adjudicate disputes among citizens and between citizens and the state.

Morka reminded Atiku that he cannot wish away or seek to abolish enshrined power of the courts to intervene in civil disputes, including electoral disputes, in cases where the authority of the court is validly invoked by a litigant.

“It is a thing of irony that Atiku, who is Nigeria’s most prolific electoral litigator, would make such a ludicrous claim that judicial involvement in electoral matters is a threat to democracy. His criticism of the courts and the electoral process rings hollow given his long history of using the courts to further his political agenda. It’s time for him to take a step back and let the democratic process unfold without his interference.

“Nigeria’s democracy is far stronger than Atiku’s political ambitions. We deserve better than petty politicking and alarmist rhetoric from an elder statesman. As a veteran politician, one would expect Atiku to understand that while democracy may be about winning election, it is, more importantly, about respecting the will of the electorate and working towards the greater good of all. Atiku should focus on rebuilding his party and offering constructive solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

“Atiku’s allegation that the APC-led administration was paying out 50 Million Naira to some opposition figures is simply bogus and laughable. Atiku knows that his political desperation is responsible for the PDP’s catastrophic disintegration. Peddling rumors and unsubstantiated allegations should be beneath anyone in the standing of an elder statesman, a former Vice President and a serial contestant for the exalted office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The party also frowned at the suggestion by opposition figures like Atiku, Peter Obi, and recently, aggrieved leaders like Mallam Nasir El-Rufai that APC may be complicit in the internal corrosion of opposition parties.

APC dismissed such suggestions as “pitiful, and only an incompetent alibi for their crass failure to manage their own affairs. They cannot govern their parties but tout their ability to govern Africa’s most populous country.”

The ruling party maintained that discerning Nigerians know better than to be distracted by the false alarm and hollow allegations of desperate politicians whose only goal is shore up their political relevance in the build up to 2027 general elections.
