Ugwuanyi, Obiano flay boundary disputes, sue for peace

ENUGU State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and his Anambra State counterpart, Willie Obiano have moved to resolve conflicts arising from boundary disputes in border communities of the two states. The governors decried the fightings and killings in the border communities and charged the people to sheathe their sword. Speaking when Enugu and Anambra state delegates met at the Government House, Enugu, to resolve the lingering boundary dispute between Awba Ofe Mmili in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State and Ibite Olo in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ugwuayin sued for peaceful co-existence among communities along boundary areas.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, stated that both states have a strong socio-cultural affinity and should as a result enjoy an enduring peace especially at their border areas. “In approaching this matter of boundary disputes between Enugu and Anambra, we should have at the back of our minds that Enugu and Anambra people are bound together by sociocultural ties. We have lived together prior to the carving out of both Enugu and the new Anambra states from the old Anambra State in 1991. State creation exercise was not meant to divide, it is rather for administrative conveniences,” the governor noted. He informed the people of an existing legal boundary instrument with the National Boundary Commission which, according to him, clearly defined the demarcation.

The governor commended the federal government for intervening in the matter in 2006 and 2011, and urged the communities to be law-abiding. Corroborating Gov. Ugwuanyi’s remark about the historical ties between both states, the deputy governor of Anambra State, Hon. Nkem Okeke, noted that such conflicts would be avoided if the people always remember that human life is ephemeral whereas lands will remain in existence. Hon. Okeke who represented Gov. Willie Obiano, said: “I know as Igbos we do not play with land; we take land as if our life depends on it, we fight for it with everything we have. But when you die, the land will be there for generations after. The fighting and killings are not worth it.” He called for a mutually acceptable resolution and charged communities in the dispute to sheathe their swords, adding that government officials responsible for boundary demarcation will soon find a lasting solution to the conflict.

Obiano threatens to send corrupt officials to jail

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has threatened to jail any governemnt official accused of mismanagement of state funds.

A statement yesterday by his media aide, Oliver Okpala, said such officials would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Offences Commission (ICPC) for investigations and prosecution.

According to him, any commissioner, civil servant or government official found to be corrupt will face the law.

The statement reads: “Thorough checks and monitoring would be mounted on the activities of serving government officials to fish out the fraudulent ones for immediate prosecution by ICPC and EFCC.

“With the new mandate given to me by the electorate, I would ensure that the welfare of the masses is prioritised like never before.

“It would not be business as usual and so we should change our attitude by doing those things that are right in the eyes of the people to move this state to greater heights.”

Obiano to herdsmen: desist from attacks or face our wrath

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has warned cattle breeders in the state to refrain from acts capable of disturbing public peace or face the wrath of the law

The warning followed last week’s clash between farmers and herdsmen in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area.

Obiano spoke at the weekend, during a reception organised by his kinsmen, after he was bestowed with the title of Ebubedike Aguleri.

He vowed that cattle herders, who carry dangerous weapons like AK-47, would not be allowed in Anambra.

The governor, however, said that he was on top of the Fulani cattle menace experienced in some parts of the state. He promised to ensure the matter is quickly resolved amicably.

Obiano said he has been briefed on the current situation between farmers and herdsmen, adding that the government has taken actions to forestall actions which may cause mayhem.

His words: “Part of the measures taken to address the menace was sensitising both the host communities and the Fulani herdsmen of the existing agreement that any party that attacks or destroys property of the other will pay and also be prosecuted.”

He reassured farmers in the affected communities that the government would tackle the invasion of their farms by cattle.

Foundation to Obiano: Tackle insecurity in Onitsha

A socio-cultural organisation, Ogilisi Foundation, has urged Governor Willie Obiano to tackle the rising cases of insecurity in Anambra, especially the commercial town of Onitsha.

The foundation made the appeal when it hosted the management of Anambra Vigilante Service (AVS) at the Rojenny Tourists Centre, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Council area yesterday.

The AVS management was led to the event by its Chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Vigilante Matters, Chief Ikechukwu Aduba, a retired Commissioner of Police.

The group said criminals were back in Onitsha and were operating as syndicates and called on the governor to urgently address the situation before it becomes a nightmare for travellers and residents.

Leader of Ogilisi Youths Mr Anthony Ogbugo, said though high profile armed robbery and kidnapping were not common, the rate of small crimes in the area was high.

Ogbugo said 70 per cent of the crimes were carried out in the motor parks.

He said there were some drivers who specialised on arms smuggling and conveyance of armed robbers to operations, adding they were ready to work as volunteers with the AVS if their safety was assured.

“I have worked in the transport sector in Onitsha for a long time and with my experience I can tell you that 70 per cent of crimes in Onitsha happen in or through the motor parks. The uncoordinated nature of parks in Onitsha has made the place a good ground for criminals.

“As I am talking to you, small crimes take place every time of the day, those snatching phone have unions with branches like Iweka, Ibolo and Tarzan branches and those called floating.

“Some operate with wheelbarrows, others with commercial motorcycles otherwise known as `Okada, we know them and how they operate but we are afraid to give out this information because most times they come back to us as soon they are arrested and become threats,” he said’.

Another speaker, Nwabueze Nwoke, said these criminals operated brazenly in the day light and most times under the watch of security agents who do not interfere.

Nwoke said they had a strong association that when anyone was caught they turn their victims to suspects and over power the people around.

“They have very strong unions, one day I heard one accusing the other of not joining them and threatened not to help rescue him again when next he was caught.

“These things are done in the open at the parks, bus stops and even where the police people are close, they do not look in the victim’s way,” he said.

  • Obiano and Southeast bask in electoral euphoria

Obiano and Southeast bask in electoral euphoria

GOVERNOR Willie Obiano’s victory in last Saturday’s Anambra State governorship poll was even more emphatic than pundits had anticipated. By all accounts, he was projected to win, but by a slimmer margin than the final count indicated. Shockingly, he won by a landslide, taking every local government and embarrassing and numbing his opponents to supine acquiescence. Despite his mollifying victory speech, he will probably read more meaning into the landslide than is really plausible. He won alright, but he won, in many significant ways, despite himself.

In an age when most state governments have irresponsibly failed to pay workers’ salaries, in some instances for more than a year, or paid a fraction of the wages, Mr Obiano’s faithful adherence to workers’ welfare was exemplary. It was naturally expected that the electorate would reward him. He might have been quite liberal in the application of the state’s financial resources, as stridently alleged by former governor Peter Obi, but the populace on whose behalf the governor claimed to act were quite unfazed by the applied arithmetic of the state’s finances. Workers were paid, some projects were ongoing, even if not world class, and the state’s economy was not paralysed. Every other thing paled into insignificance.

But the poll victory, particularly its emphatic margin, was more an endorsement of the separate and proud identity of the Igbo people in the national political mix than an endorsement of the salient qualities of the somewhat inarticulate governor. The election came at a time when there was so much hysteria about the place of the Igbo in the national scheme of things, especially as propagated by the ingratiating Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) vis-a-vis the intimidating and antagonistic federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari and his security forces. For a party that identified with the late secessionist leader, Emeka Ojukwu, and which continues to proclaim and celebrate its Igbo identity, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) of Mr Obiano was bound to resonate with the electorate.

It would be foolish to challenge a victory so clear, so determined, so indisputable. The internationalist governor of Imo State, the irrepressible Rochas Okorocha himself, suggested that no one could sensibly challenge a victory so uncomplicated. But whether he himself draws the right lessons from it is unclear, seeing how valiantly but futilely he struggled to drag the Igbo into the national political mainstream.  The Obiano victory does not suggest that the Igbo are unamenable to embracing the mainstream; it only suggests that after the Buhari presidency has so fouled the well of trust between the Southeast and the rest of Nigeria, the Igbo had in turn become defiant. That defiance, from which Mr Obiano has profited so immensely electorally, will most probably be carried into the next general elections.

Ex-governor Obi shouted himself hoarse about Mr Obiano’s poor financial management ability. Though the governor and his team tried to rebut the allegations, the former governor was probably not too mistaken in his judgement of the governor’s capability. Mr Obiano has not been a financial exemplar, nor as visionary and charismatic as the feline-voiced Mr Obi and the indomitable and often excitable Chris Ngige, a former Anambra governor himself and now a minister in the Buhari cabinet. In fact, the governor was neither stirring in the governorship debate, which he had naturally expected to win to put a gloss on his administration, nor incomparable in his style of governance. Except his performance in his second term, which he has won with aplomb, is unequalled, it may be premature to write off the influence of Mr Obi in Anambra politics. However, the former governor misadvised himself and misread regional mood by coming out openly and frontally against the governor.

The Anambra poll may signpost the future of Southeast politics. That region is not deluded to think that the Buhari presidency loves it, and it is doubtful whether the presidency can substantially redress the problem of mutual antagonism between Abuja and that region by embarking on furious projects funding and execution. The Igbo perceive the federal dislike passionately, and they seem desperate to requite it, believing that President Buhari’s conversion and conviction are only skin deep. If the APC is not to find extreme difficulty in winning the Southeast and South-South in the next elections, and struggle in the Southwest and probably in parts of the Middle Belt, the Buhari presidency will have to do a major rethink of its politics in the light of the Anambra poll result.

Mr Obiano should interpret his victory sensibly and with restraint, for it may not carry as much good news as he thinks. Mr Obi should also re-examine his politics and methods all over again, and wonder whether he had not overreached himself and exaggerated his own influence. But above all, the Buhari presidency has the most unpleasant self-examination to carry out. With the doors shut against it in the Southeast and South-South, as it seems, and the windows also shut against it in the Southwest, it must ponder whether it had ruled like democrats or behaved like military autocrats, or whether it really understood Nigeria or it had been chasing a chimera all along.

  • I won’t dump APGA, Says Obiano

I won’t dump APGA, Says Obiano

The Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on Friday debunked speculations that he was planning to dump his party, All Progressive Grand Alliance ( APGA ) for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
According to him, he has no such plans.
Obiano, spoke with State House journalists after ‘thank you’ visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, for allowing a free and fair gubernatorial poll in Anambra.
Stressing that he would never dump APGA, he dismissed as inconsequential the defection from APGA to APC by Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, the first son of late hero and former leader of the party, Odumegwu Ojukwu.
The governor who said he has extended hand of fellowship to his opponents to join hands with him to turn the fortunes of Anambra round, said that he was prepared to work and not disappointed the people of the state for the confidence reposed on him.
According to him, the President was excited over his visit and assured him of his respect for the wishes of Anambra people to freely elect a governor of their choice.
He said, “I came to see the President na to thank him for keeping to his word that the election in Anambra will be free and fair and that is exactly how it went. I’m very happy to come to report to him personally on the success of the  election.”
Asked if he expected to win such a contentious election, Obiano said, “Well, I thank God it is the Lord’s doing. To win 21 over 21 is not an easy task, it just showed the faith the people had in me and that is exactly why it happened and I thank Ndi Anambra for the confidence reposed on me  and reassure them that this will encourage me to work harder.”
On how he intends to unite the people, he said, “Well, I have extended olive branch to my colleagues, my friends that contested with me and as you can see they have all congratulated me and we will hold hands and match on. You see, our private ambitions can never be greater than the interest of Anambra State. I believe we are working on well.”
On the new assurances he got from President Buhari, he said, “Well, Mr. President was excited that the votes of Ndi Anambra counted and that that is a legacy he wants to leave behind, that he conducts free and fair elections without any interference from the federal.”
Asked if his relationship with Peter Obi will be smooth now that he has been re-elected, Obiano replied, “I don’t have a problem with anybody. I’m doing well, I don’t have a problem with anybody.”
On how he was going to strengthen his party, he said “My party is very strong in the south east and that you will see very soon in the coming elections and from there we will match on.”
On insinuations of plans to dump APGA for APC, Obiano said, “No. Never. That is totally unfounded. I will never leaver APGA, I’m the leader and the BoT chairman of APGA and again by God’s grace the governor and governor-elect.”
Asked if he has plans to woo back Ojukwu’s son he replied, “He is of no consequence I’m sorry to say.
