    ‘Obiano won on sympathy vote’

The Director of Adoration Ministries, Rev. Emmanuel Uke, in this interview with reporters in Lagos, speaks on the outcome of the Anambra State governorship election. Musa Odoshimokhe was there.

You predicted victory for Governor Willie Obiano. Are you satisfied with the outcome of the election?

Let me start by saying that I am very happy at the outcome of the election and Anambra people are also very happy. I predicted it and when the message came, I saw Obiano emerging a winner of the contest.  But, I also saw the evil one trying to rig him out and because he stepped on the Adoration ground, we prayed against the evil intentions of the wicked ones.

I remember what happened after the prophesy, people were calling me fake prophet just because I said what the Holy Spirit revealed to me. I told him in confidence that he will win after praying for him and he eventually won to the glory of God.

I did not campaign for anybody. I am just the mouth piece of God. I am a priest of God; I am neither a politician nor partisan. The Church of God and the party of God is my own party. Holy Spirit endows His prophet with gifts.

What should Obiano do after the election?

He has seen that God and the masses love him as reflected in the election. It is now left for him to justify the vote by filling in the gap in areas he did not do well in the past three and half years. This is the time for him to re-strategize in order to make the people happy because he knows that some people are not happy with him but for me, he scored above average. He did well in the area of security and payment of workers salary and other areas. The Holy Spirit is warning him not to forget the poor masses.

I also believe that he won the election because people are tired of imposition of candidates and godfatherism in the state. I believe that we have passed the level of godfatherism in Anambra State and that was why they gave him a sympathy vote.

How can Peter Obi and Obiano reconcile?

Peter Obi did wonderfully well during his administration. In fact, he was the one that handed the baton over to Willie. We believe so much in his credibility. I expect him to congratulate Willie Obiano and let love continue to lead Anambra state. Willie should also find a way of extending a hand of fellowship and love to him.

The international best practice is to congratulate or support whoever that emerges winner for peace and unity of the country or state. For me, all the candidates should come under one roof in thanksgiving to God. It is not easy to contest for an election and I thank them for their courage.

Obiano should keep behind all the tantrums that were thrown at him during the election. People called him names; a thief, a drunkard and so on, those things are hurting but Christ is our ideal. So, I want the governor to find a place in his heart to forgive them. This will further enhance the development of the state.

    Your assessment of the election?

I am very happy at the peaceful conduct of the election. You know in Anambra State, people claim to be omnipotent. Some people think they can buy things over with their money. So, in this election, they were disappointed.A

    Obiano mourns Ekwueme

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has joined other Nigerians to mourn the death of former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, describing the death as “huge loss to Nigeria”.

Ekwueme, according to a statement signed by Igwe Laz Ekwueme, a musicologist, died at about 10 p.m. on Sunday in a London clinic.

Obiano said he was yet to come to terms with the reality of Ekwueme’s death as it was hard to contemplate the vacuum that his passage had created.

“A great iroko has fallen. Nigeria has lost a statesman; Ndigbo have lost an illustrious son and Anambra has lost a father.

“I have lost both a father and a friend. I have lost a mentor. This is a big loss on all fronts.

“I was close to Ekwueme. I sought his advice on so many things and he was always ready to help.

“He attended every major event we have held in the past three years in our efforts to make Anambra a better place.

“You always knew where you stood with him on any issue. His death is a big personal loss to me.

“Only few Nigerians, living or dead could match Ekwueme’s contributions to a fair and just federation in the nation’s seemingly endless search for peace and equity,” the governor said.

Obiano, who described the late icon as “architect” of a balanced Nigeria, expressed regret that the elder statesman passed away at a trying period in the life of the nation when his bridge-building talent was most needed.

“Even in his last days, Dr Ekwueme fought gallantly to ensure that equity prevailed in his home state of Anambra.

“He spoke out fearlessly in favour of sustaining the geopolitical balance that has entrenched peace in the state.

“Dr Ekwueme’s life is an open book that should inspire generations of Nigerians who need a beacon to guide them into evolving as true patriots willing to make sacrifices for the greatness of the country.

“He is an icon whose place is assured in our hearts in Anambra,” Obiano said.

The governor expressed his condolences to Ekwueme’s family and the people of the state, and prayed that God gives the fortitude to bear this grave loss.

    Thirty-six candidates contested the election

Declaring the result in Awka Prof. Akpagu, said Obiano polled 234, 071 votes to defeat his closest rival Mr Tony Nwoye of All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 98, 752 votes.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mr Oseloka Obaze, came third with 70,293 votes.

He said that the total valid votes cast at the poll was 422,314; total number of rejected votes, 26,457 while the total votes cast was 448,771 votes.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Dr Ukwachukwu Orji, commended the people of the state for exhibiting good behaviour, saying “no bloodshed was recorded”.

“Let this election not divide the people of the state but bring you together,” he said

Orji said Obiano would get his certificate of return from INEC on Wednesday.

“We promised free, fair and credible poll and that is what we have fulfilled that,” he said.

Obiano  said his victory belonged not to him or his party (APGA) but to all Anambra people.

In his acceptance speech titled, ‘Time to Build a New World” he read from his country home in  Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government, the governor declared that “this sweet victory belongs to Ndi Anambra”.

“It belongs to the wheelbarrow pushers and the okada riders who have clearly seen in our recent political experience, a glimmer of light in the horizon.

“It belongs to the farmers in Ayamelum, Onono, Ogbaru, Omasi, Omor and Ufuma who have now realised that agriculture is the future of Nigeria.

“It belongs to the teachers and civil servants who have seen that a motivated workforce is the greatest asset of any government.

“It belongs to the illustrious sons and daughters of Anambra State who have seen the star of this great state rise in the Eastern Skies and have answered our call to  bring home their naira and dollars to put our dear state on the investment map.

“This victory belongs to all of us. My dear people, this victory is not a winner takes it all.”

Obiano  said “in the New Anambra of my dream, everyone is a winner.”

He  urged other governorship candidates to join in building the new Anambra that the citizens would be proud of.

“I say to you; my brothers, we have all fought a good fight, but Anambra State is the winner.

“The interest of Anambra State is bigger than the private ambitions of anyone of us.

“Our beloved state needs our talent and our time. The time to build a better place is now.

He described the victory as “a referendum on the solid resolve of the people of Anambra to rise above average in all endeavours.

“We have demonstrated that we are indeed capable of taking charge of our lives and making difficult decisions that will brighten the future of our children.

“I have no doubt in my mind that we shall continue to lay the building blocks for a prosperous tomorrow for all.

“This mandate is dear to my heart. I see it as a historic call to inspire my people to greatness. I see it as a call to deny myself sleep that my people might sleep better.

“I will not give myself rest until our beloved state has fully assumed the status of the model state of Nigeria. This is my promise to you all.”

He said the victory did not come by chance but the final product of the combined efforts of brilliant men and women who sacrificed their comfort to ensure that Anambra’s steady march to progress was not derailed.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for proving to the people of Anambra that under his watch, democracy would have deeper roots in Nigeria.

“Mr President promised us a free and fair election. Today, we can all see that he has kept his promise.’’

He thanked INEC for conducting a transparent election in Anambra, stressing that with this election, the commission had shown that it was prepared for the 2019 elections.

Obiano commended the security operatives whose alertness ensured that the will of the people was not thwarted.

The governor said “my team and I shall never fail you” and urged the people to prepare for the speedy transformation of Anambra into a prosperous sub-national entity in the next four years.

“We have stepped into our finest hour. Our journey into greatness is now assured.

“We are ready and willing to work with anyone who has something to share that will make Anambra State great.

‘’We are open to new ideas, new visions of society and a new hope,’’ he declared

  • Obiano’s victory ends battle for Anambra seat

Obiano’s victory ends battle for Anambra seat

Governor Willy Obiano’s declaration as winner of the Anambra State election by the Independent National Electoral Commission ((INEC) yesterday ended the battle for the coveted seat in the Southeast state. RAYMOND MORDI and NWANOSIKE ONU write on the factors that shaped the election in which the incumbent trounced 35 challengers.

Incumbent Governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) won last Saturday’s governorship election convincingly. He defeated his opponents in all the 21 local government with 234,071 votes, representing 55.42 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in the race, Dr. Tony Nwoye trailed him with 98,752 votes. Mr. Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed closely with 70,293 votes.

Obiano had the highest number of votes in his Anambra East Local Government Area. His APC challenger is also from the local government area.

The governor got 20,510 votes in the local government, while Nwoye trailed behind with 5,248 votes. Obaze garnered 1,132 votes in the council, which has 72, 886 registered voters.

At the height of polls’ collation, the Chief Returning Officer and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpogu, declared that Obiano have satisfied the requirements of the law and “is hereby declared winner.”

Obiano declared that his triumph at the election is a victory for the people and not for himself or APGA. He said it is the time to build a new world for the people of Anambra, thanking them for having confidence in him, to leading the state to the promise land.

The United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate, Osita Chidoka, who came fourth in the race, said he lost because he refused to share money like others.

In his reaction, the political godfather of Anambra, Chief Chris Uba, said his party, the PDP, lost the election because of the impunity and the hijack of the party by former Governor Peter Obi.

He said the last time the PDP produced a governor in Anambra was in 2003, when he made Dr. Chris Ngige governor. He described Obaze as a foreigner imposed on the party by Obi, noting that was painful for the PDP to come a distant behind APGA and APC in Anambra.

He, however, warned the PDP to either correct the impunity during the forthcoming national convention of the party on December 9 or remain same. He said Obi should apologise to members of the party on the pages of five newspapers and he (Uba) would know what to do.

With the landslide victory, the people have shown more confidence in Obiano and APGA as a political platform. The APGA flag bearer defeated his APC counterpart in Senator Chris Ngige’s polling unit in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra Central Senatorial District; in Senator Uche Ekwunife’s unit at Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra Central; and Prince Arthur Eze’s polling unit in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, also Anambra Central.

The Chairman of the Willie Obiano Campaign Organisation, Chief Victor Umeh, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying the way and manner the commission went about the process accounted for the difference.

Umeh said that all the ad hoc staff and collation officers that took part in the election were selected by the commission in such a way that their identities were not known until the last minute.

The returning officer, a former National Chairman of APGA, who said the party feared that the election might be rigged by the APC-controlled Federal Government in favour of its candidate, noted that the electoral umpire  shocked the people with the best election that has ever been held in the state.

He said: “We already knew that Governor Obiano have won the election yesterday, but there was palpable tension that the result will be changed overnight. But the results declared here today suggest that the process was transparent: nothing was changed.

“All the results we received from the local government collation centres yesterday were the actual results declared here today. This is what we wish for the country; to have an electoral process where the people will decide who becomes their leader. If we get it right continuously in this regard, this country will always have leaders that will serve them.”

According to Umeh, last Saturday was not the first time APGA will be securing a landslide victory in a governorship election, recalling that “in 2013, Obiano won in 20 out the 21 local government areas in the state. But he won in all the 21 councils this time around, because of the great work he did in virtually all the communities. So, you can see that the mandate was unanimous: no local government shied away from giving him maximum support.

“Again, APGA has shown that it is the dominant party here; the people believe in it because it represents their political life. By the time Obiano completes his second term, the party would have governed the state for 16 years.’’

Umeh said APGA has offered good governance in the last 12 years, thereby making the state secure and stable.

Confirming his early belief that the people will not gamble, by voting for somebody they do not know, he added: “Good governance is very rare in Nigeria; any place you see it the citizens will grab it. That’s what the people of Anambra haws done.”

    Why Obiano won

One of the biggest factors that aided Governor Will Obiano’s victory is incumbency. Naturally, Obiano exploited it throughout the electioneering campaign period. His billboards and posters were the most visible throughout the major roads in the state. One can hardly find billboards and posters of the other candidates on major roads in the state. Opponents have accused the party of destroying their billboards and posters.

In terms of performance, Obiano may not have performed to everyone’s expectation, but he exploited the fact that he is in power by embarking on last minute developmental projects to garner votes in areas his opponents are expected to have block votes.

In his campaign, Obiano tried to whip up the same sentiments that worked for the party in previous elections. One of such is to position APGA as an Igbo party. Owing to this sentiment, APGA has been winning elections since 2003. Though former Governor Peter Obi and the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s son, Emeka Jnr., have refuted the claims of APGA that the former warlord warned the Igbo not to abandon the party, their words have certainly not made impact in the minds of the people of Anambra, who take APGA as their own.

Besides, the party is well rooted in the state. So, it has its own die-hard supporters, who believe he has done well under the circumstance he finds himself.

Another factor responsible for Obiano’s re-election is the zoning arrangement. In the spirit of the zoning arrangement, the two other major parties – the APC and the PDP – picked their candidates from Anambra North, which is favoured to occupy the governorship seat in the next four years. But the odds favoured Obiano, who is entitled to only one more term of four years.

Although both Nwoye and Obaze who are from Anambra North like the incumbent signed an undertaking pledging to do only one term to complete the eight years allotted to the zone, electorates from Anambra South were more favourably disposed to back Obiano as a matter of expediency.

Observers say the political titans from the zone were more comfortable with Obiano, because his continuation would provide the shortest route for the zone to grab power.

    President Buhari

Despite being the national leader of the ruling party, the President did not interfere in the conduct of the Anambra elections. His father-for-all role was on display when he ordered the reinstatement of the security details of Obiano, who were withdrawn by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, few days to the election.

    INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is one of the major beneficiaries of the Anambra governorship election, having conducted it without the usual hiccups that always characterized the exercise in the country.

Though there were few complaints of late arrival of materials in some places and malfunction of the card reader machines, but the election has been adjudged the best so far in the land.

    Obiano

He is the incumbent governor of the state, who was pressurised to relinquish his office by the opposition. But his dogged nature, sincerity and straight forwardness paved the way for him during the election on Saturday

Many people had written him off in the election, but his open mind and politics of anti party by some members of other political parties gave him victory.

    Police

The masses had lost confidence in the Nigeria police especially,  when it comes to issues of conducting elections in the country because of the way they bully,  harass and intimidate innocent souls.

But the comportment of the police men including rank and file and maturity displayed by them had given  the people a new hope in the police

    APGA

The party has really proved with the Obiano victory that it is no longer a party, but a movement for the voters in Anambra State. The party defeated the PDP, despite the backing of Obi, who dumped APGA for the then ruling PDP after ruling the state for two consecutive terms.

•Makarfi’s tenure a disaster, says senator

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and the senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu yesterday congratulated Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano for his re-election in Saturday’s election.

Fayose described the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies as above average and a sign that the electoral umpire was listening to the cries of Nigerians for free, fair and credible elections inherited by the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said: “Even though there were reports of malfunctioning of card readers, number of votes exceeding number of accredited voters and pockets of violence as well as buying of votes, the Anambra governorship election was better than others conducted by INEC under the present government of APC.”

He added: “By now, INEC ought to have resolved all issues on card readers because it does not augur well for the electoral process and INEC itself, if we are still being faced with failure of card readers on Election Day.”

Fayose hailed observers – local and international – for ensuring that the election was relatively credible.

The governor urged them to focus more attention on next year’s governorship election in Ekiti and Osun states.

Kashamu described the tenure of the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, as “a disaster and the worst nightmare for our party”.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, he said: “It is clear that Makarfi and his allies have brought ill-luck to the PDP.”

The senator was reacting to the re-election of Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano in Saturday’s poll.

Kashamu said: “Makarfi and his team came as if they were the saviours the PDP was waiting for, but they have turned out to be the ones killing the party with their illegality, impunity and self-centredness. They believe they can do anything and get away with it. They did it in Anambra where all the popular aspirants were disenfranchised and the ticket was sold against democratic norms…”

‘Obiano a beneficiary of Buhari’s commitment to free, fair polls’

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has said the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State, Governor Willy Piano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is a beneficiary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to free and fair elections.

Reacting to the outcome of the November 18 poll, Okechukwu, who was an observer during the election, said: “Governor Willie Obiano benefited handsomely from President Buhari’s commitment to free, fair and transparent elections. This is a case of democracy convert, someone who behaved better than old democrats. Otherwise, he couldn’t have allowed Obiano to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies against his party’s candidate.”

He added: “Yes, free and fair, but one does not know how Obiano will cope with governance as per finance, when he overbids other candidates. In our local parlance, he used all the firewood. It was more or less a cash and carry election.

“Can you imagine that the chairman of our great party, Emeka Ibe, was arrested by the security agency on the eve of the election because of some flimsy allegations? In the days of yore, a federal ruling party chairman would be parading the town with soldiers and policemen. A lot of our canvassers and sundry officials were harassed and hounded. It was the theatre of the absurd.”
