… Okowa, Ebie, Dein of Agbor, others applaud governor’s giant strides

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday flagged off the construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor/Uromi Junction flyover in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Oborevwori described the project as a critical intervention aimed at enhancing road safety, preserving lives, and stimulating economic activities within Delta State and beyond.

The governor said the flyover was conceived in response to persistent traffic congestion and frequent road accidents at the Agbor/Uromi Junction, a major federal highway intersection that has, over the years, recorded loss of lives and destruction of property.

According to him, the dangerous interaction among vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians at the junction, compounded by poor traffic management, made a permanent engineering solution inevitable.

Oborevwori disclosed that the contract for the design and construction of the flyover had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion timeline of 14 months.

He assured residents that the project aligned with his administration’s commitment to even development across all parts of the state and the provision of safer, modern road infrastructure.

He further urged the contractor to adhere strictly to quality standards and project timelines, while calling on residents and motorists to cooperate during the construction period to ensure smooth execution.

The project, he explained, includes a 1.3-kilometre flyover bridge along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction, ramps, roundabouts, concrete drainage systems, kerbs, and solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and sustainability.

Oborevwori, who was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, and other top government functionaries for the groundbreaking ceremony, stressed the strategic importance of the corridor, describing it as a major economic and transportation link connecting the Eastern and Western parts of the Niger Delta, while also serving as a gateway to the North.

“Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this route. Its importance to the national economy cannot be overstated,” he said.

He noted that upon completion, the flyover would significantly enhance mobility, reduce travel time, expand economic opportunities, and safeguard the lives of thousands of Nigerians who ply the route daily.

The governor also highlighted the employment opportunities the project would generate for engineers, artisans, labourers, transporters, food vendors, and others across the construction value chain.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive and balanced development, Oborevwori said the state government had injected N100 billion as a special intervention fund, allocating N4 billion each to the 25 local government areas for infrastructure development, in addition to other sectoral investments.

He added that Ika South LGA was also benefiting from other major projects, including the N15.4 billion contract awarded for 13.3 kilometres of concrete drainage systems and five kilometres of road construction to address flooding and erosion, as well as the planned N12 billion 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.

“As a government, we award contracts strictly on merit and competence. Excellence will always attract further patronage,” the governor assured, expressing confidence that the flyover would be completed on schedule.

Earlier, the immediate past Governor of the state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, described the Agbor/ Uromi Junction Flyover as a monumental and impactful project, commending Oborevwori for sustaining continuity and translating plans into tangible development.

He said the scale and spread of infrastructure projects across the state under the current administration reflected purposeful and people-oriented governance.

Okowa also used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the ongoing economic reforms, though initially challenging, were deliberately steering Nigeria toward a more sustainable future.

The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described Oborevwori as an audacious and workaholic leader, reminding the Ika Nation of the many infrastructure projects executed by the administration in the area and urged continued support for the governor in the years ahead.

Mr Frederich Weiser, who spoke on behalf of the management and Board of Directors of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for the confidence reposed in it through the award of the project.

The firm pledged to deliver the flyover to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency, and to complete it on schedule with minimal disruption, drawing on its experience with similar projects across the state, including the Ughelli Flyover.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chiedu Ebie, assured of the commission’s readiness to collaborate with the Delta State Government to complete the Abraka–Obiaruku–Abavo–Agbor Road, describing it as a vital feeder route to the new flyover.

The Chairman of Ika South LGA, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior described the flyover as a “project of destiny,” and thanked Oborevwori for what he called action-driven leadership, including the restoration of electricity to communities that had been without power for over 14 years.

Other speakers, including the member representing Ika Federal Constituency, Hon. Victor Nwokolo; APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka; the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, HRM Benjamin Ikenchukwu, Keagborekuzi I, and President-General of Agbor Community Union, Prof. Onyemaechi Ugboh, commended Oborevwori for his massive infrastructure drive and assured him of their unwavering support.

    • …says monarchs make governance easier, more effective

In a powerful gesture that underscores the centrality of traditional institutions in governance, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has presented 65 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across the state, describing them as “tools of service” for guardians of peace and stability.

The presentation, which took place on Wednesday in Government House, Asaba, saw 60 brand new Prados and five Land Cruiser SUVs handed over to the royal fathers for ease of movement.

Governor Oborevwori said the occasion was “a very important and symbolic day in the life of this administration”, noting that the beneficiaries represent “a special class of leaders whose contributions to governance are critical, but often understated.”

Drawing from his grassroots political experience, he emphasised that traditional rulers are far more than custodians of culture.

“They are not merely custodians of our customs, norms, and traditions; they are vital intermediaries between government and the people at the grassroots,” the governor said.

While reaffirming his administration’s irrevocable commitment to building a strong, inclusive economy founded on equity and justice, Oborevwori lauded the traditional rulers for their support.

“I can confidently state that traditional rulers have made governance easier and more effective in Delta State. I commend their unwavering commitment to peace, progress, and prosperity,” Oborevwori said.

According to him, royal fathers play a frontline role in mobilising communities, promoting government programmes, resolving disputes, and supporting security agencies, often without expectation of reward.

“Our royal fathers are often on the road, responding to government directives, mediating in communal disputes, engaging in peace-building and conflict resolution. They do all these voluntarily and willingly. For this, we are truly grateful,” Oborevwori added.

He explained that the decision to provide rugged SUVs was deliberate, given the rural and difficult terrains in which many traditional rulers operate.

“These vehicles are not luxuries; they are tools of service. What is required is strength, durability, and functionality, and that is what these vehicles provide,” the governor declared.

Oborevwori linked the gesture to his administration’s broader philosophy of inclusive governance under the MORE Agenda, particularly its pillar of ‘Opportunities for All.’

He highlighted a wide range of social intervention programmes already implemented by his government, including financial support for over 307,600 vulnerable persons under the DCARES programme, grants to petty traders and artisans, empowerment of women and youths, and monthly stipends for 10,000 widows across the state.

He also reeled out landmark achievements in workers’ welfare, pension payments, scholarships, bursaries, and financial assistance for Delta indigenes in Nigeria Law Schools.

“From the foregoing, it is clear that every segment of our population has been touched. So, when we turn our attention today to our traditional rulers, it is not out of favouritism, but fairness,” he said. “You have not stressed me. You have not made demands. Wherever I go in your domains, I receive warmth, culture, and cooperation. This gesture today is from the heart”.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, said the presentation of the vehicles to traditional rulers was a clear and practical demonstration of the Oborevwori administration’s respect for traditional institutions in the state, adding that the government’s gesture was in appreciation of the vital role they (traditional rulers) play in ensuring peace, unity, and stability across the state.

In his welcome remarks, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, who outlined the various developmental strides of Oborevwori’s administration across different sectors of the state, noted that Delta State was being governed with empathy, foresight, and a deep commitment to the collective welfare of its people.

Speaking separately during the ceremony, the Obi of Owa, HRM, Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor (JP); the Ovie of Uvwie, HRM, Emmanuel Sideso Abe l, and the Pere of Ogulagha, HRM, Elder Capt. King Joseph I. Timiyan (JP) expressed profound appreciation to the Governor for the gesture, adding that the car gift would go a long way in enhancing their efficiency in the discharge of their traditional roles.

Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd.), Orhue I, in a vote of thanks, described Governor Oborevwori’s presentation of 65 SUVs to traditional rulers as a timely and deeply symbolic intervention that strengthens grassroots governance and peace-building across the state.

He said mobility remains central to the effective discharge of traditional rulers’ responsibilities, stressing that “a vehicle is not just a means of transportation to a traditional ruler; it is a symbol of authority and service.”

Delta MSMEs: Oborevwori releases ₦1bn to BoI as revolving loan fund

The Delta State Government has released ₦1 billion to the Bank of Industry (BoI) as a revolving loan fund for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the state.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced this on Tuesday at the Government House, Asaba, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the BoI for the management of the fund.

He described the initiative as a key milestone in his administration’s MORE Agenda, aimed at driving inclusive growth, job creation, and sustainable economic development.

Oborevwori said the fund, approved by the State Executive Council in 2025, was designed to ease MSMEs’ access to affordable finance, stressing that small businesses remain the backbone of the economy and the largest source of employment and growth.

Oborevwori said: “By providing our traders, artisans, agro-processors and small-scale manufacturers with access to capital at single-digit interest rates, we are equipping them with the resources they need to expand their businesses, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to our economy.”

According to him, the financial window was deliberately structured to reduce the burden of high borrowing costs that often stifle entrepreneurial growth, while ensuring sustainability through a revolving loan system for the entrepreneurs.

“This N1 billion is a revolving fund. Loans granted under this arrangement must be recovered so that other eligible entrepreneurs can also benefit. This responsibility is non-negotiable and must be discharged with the utmost diligence and integrity,” he stressed.

Governor Oborevwori explained that the choice of the Bank of Industry as managers of the fund was informed by its proven track record as Nigeria’s foremost development finance institution, with strong credit appraisal systems and business support frameworks.

He said, “Our partnership with the Bank of Industry goes beyond finance. It integrates vital business development and support services that entrepreneurs need to succeed and thrive in today’s highly competitive economy,” adding that he was confident in the Bank’s capacity to manage the fund transparently and efficiently.

The Governor also reflected on the state’s long history of empowerment programmes, noting that while grants remain relevant, excessive reliance on them could undermine accountability.

He clarified that the initiative would not replace existing empowerment schemes, assuring that the government would continue to roll out grants and other support programmes where necessary.

“This MoU is another critical pillar of our broader economic empowerment strategy. It complements, rather than replaces, our ongoing interventions,” he said.

On the timing of the programme, the Governor disclosed that although it was initially planned for December, it was shifted to January to ensure maximum impact.

Looking ahead, he assured that the ₦1 billion fund could be significantly scaled up if properly managed.

“If this fund demonstrates impact, there will be no limit to what we can do together. We can scale it to ₦10 billion, ₦20 billion or even ₦30 billion. This is a starting point,” the Governor declared.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, described the partnership as a strategic step towards expanding enterprise activities and unlocking sustainable economic growth in the state.

He said the ₦1 billion revolving fund provided by the Delta State Government, would strengthen MSMEs by improving access to affordable finance and deepening collaboration between the state government and Nigeria’s premier development finance institution.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the Bank of Industry’s mandate of translating policy priorities into practical financing solutions that address business challenges across key sectors of the economy.

“As Nigeria’s leading development finance institution, the Bank of Industry remains committed to working closely with governments and the private sector to create opportunities for businesses to innovate, create value and remain competitive,” he said.

The MD expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for its commitment to economic development, describing the MoU as a clear demonstration of the administration’s economic drive.

Oborevwori flags off ₦39.3bn Otovwodo flyover, vows to end Ughelli gridlock

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday flagged off the construction of the ₦39.3 billion Otovwodo (Ughelli) Flyover, describing it as a permanent solution to the chronic traffic congestion at one of the state’s busiest junctions.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Ughelli, the governor said the project aligned with his administration’s infrastructure renewal agenda, focusing on durable road construction, prudent resource use, and improved connectivity across urban and rural areas.

He said rapid population growth had overstretched Ughelli’s road network, particularly at the Otovwodo Junction along the East–West Road, turning it into a notorious traffic bottleneck that costs commuters several productive hours daily.

Oborevwori added that he had personally experienced the gridlock at the junction.

As an interim measure, the governor disclosed that his administration constructed alternative routes—including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru, and Edo streets, as well as Royal Avenue linking Agbarha-Otor Road—at a cost of nearly ₦6 billion to ease traffic ahead of the flyover.

He expressed confidence that the project would permanently eliminate congestion in Ughelli and boost economic activities in the area.

The governor said the project, awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, is expected to be completed within 12 months, stressing that the timeline is non-negotiable due to the strategic importance of the junction.

He explained that the project includes a multi-span reinforced concrete bridge with dual carriageway, roundabouts and associated roadworks linking the East–West Road with other arterial routes, noting that it would ease congestion, reduce travel time, improve safety and boost economic activities.

Oborevwori also highlighted the job creation potential of the project, saying it would generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the construction value chain.

He urged residents to be patient and comply with traffic directives during the construction.

Reaffirming his commitment to transparency and accountability, the governor assured the residents that the state would continue executing major projects without borrowing, adding that several completed projects across the state were awaiting inauguration, with more to be flagged off in 2026 under the Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda.
