    After a two week recess, the Senate will resume today to select its principal officers.

    The positions up for grabs include Senate Leader, Deputy Senate Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Chief Whip and Minority Leader.

    While the majority All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to produce the Senate Leader, Deputy Senate Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to produce the Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip

    The APC caucus and PDP caucus in the Senate met separately for several hours in Abuja yesterday.

    There were also indications that the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, met the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Ahmed Lawan groups behind closed doors yesterday in Abuja.

    President Muhammadu Buhari, said a source, is likely to submit the list of his ministerial nominees to the Senate this week for consideration and approval.

     

  • EBF elects new officers Saturday

    The Eastern Bar Forum (EBF) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) will on Saturday at the Bar Onitsha elect new officers to run the affairs of the Forum for the next two years. Thewnew officers will take over from the Mr. Ogbonna Igwenyi led Executives of the Forum.

    A statement from the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Gerald Ezeh, states that the following candidates have been cleared to contest for  the following offices: Messers Ekong E. O. Effiom, Ogbeche O.S. Richard and Essien Essien have been cleared for the office of Chairman; Barth Aniche N. Okoye-Aniche and Chukwu Arthur have been cleared to contest for the office of the Vice-Chairman,  while Aguigwo Basil O. and Anosike E. Emeka have been cleared to contest for the office of Secretary and Mr. Onah Cyprain I. was cleared for the office of Treasurer.

  • NASU elects officers

    Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), FEPOFFA chapter, have been praised for displaying maturity during the union’s elections of new leaders.

    Comrade Lawrence Okebiorun, representative of the National General Secretary, gave the commendation during the election.

    The union held a by-election for the caretaker committee members to serve  the remainder of the tenure of the last executives.

    The new officers are: Mr Alli Emanuel (Chairman); Mr. Tope Joseph (General Secretary) and Mrs Ocheme Cecilia (Treasurer).

    Fagbemiro Julius, Bello Akeem, Sheu Olarenwaju, Adesigbin Monsuru and Jimba Akabo were elected ex-officio members.

    Okebiorun advised the new leaders to reach out to their opponents to build a formidable union. He urged them to sustain the mutual understanding between the union and the poly management.

    Other officers at the election were Aderegun Adedamola (National H/Qtrs); Bukoye Abioye (Kwara State Chairman); Sina Owoeye (Kwara State Secretary) and Rapheal Oloyede (Member F and G).

  • Mile 12 market elects officers

    The Arewa Perishable Foodstuff Association at Mile 12 Market in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State, yesterday, elected officers to pilot its affairs.

    The election was held 40 years after the market moved to Mile 12 from Iddo.

    Alhaji Haruna Mohammed polled 174 votes to beat Alhaji Tsoso Babangida with 15 votes to emerge chairman.

    Other officers were elected unopposed. They are  Alhaji Sahabi Sokoto – Vice chairman, Mohammed Abdul  – General Secretary, Shehu Usman Jibril – Financial Secretary, Abdulahi Namowa – Assistant General Secretary, Aminu Madobi – Auditor, Shuaibu Badamasi – Public Relations Officer, Adamu Danhegeja – Welfare Secretary, and Mohammed Guri – Treasurer.

    Alhaji Haruna thanked God, the government and security operatives for the peaceful election.

    “We also appreciate the love and support of our Iyaloja General, Alhaja Folashade Tinubu-Ojo. We assure them of our unalloyed cooperation. We have by this election, instituted democracy in the market and never again shall there be any leadership tussle among us. On behalf of this team, I want to assure our people that their welfare will be our priority.

    “We would intensify our efforts in making sure that the market is kept always clean and not relent on our efforts in riding the area of traffic. We therefore appeal to the state government to help us complete the pedestrian bridge as soon as possible and also provide micro credit scheme for our members to enhance their businesses.”

    Police set to promote 36,599 officers

    THE  Police are set to promote 36,599 officers, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, broke the news yesterday in Abuja.

    Arase, who spoke during an interactive meeting with Police Inspectors and others, said officers due for promotion will embark on training immediately after the May 29 inauguration ceremony.

    He said: “We will promote 36,599 rank and file officers. These include 6,483 Sergeants who will be promoted to Inspectors, 29,937 Corporals to Sergeant and 179 Constables to Corporals.

    “Others that will be included in the promotion exercise are those who failed the last promotion exercise, those who were on Foreign Service, those who were sick and those whose ranks were reduced.”

    He frowned at the use of police officers as domestic servants by some individuals.

    The IGP noted that officers caught acting as servants would be arrested and punished.

    Arase announced that henceforth police would only be attached to government officials.

    The IGP said: “Henceforth, we have decided that only government officials will enjoy police protection. Those of you that are posted to various VIPs, on no account should you carry their bags, on no account should you act as domestic servants to them.

    “You are police officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and they must respect you as such.

    “The uniform must be respected. Anybody, who wants to hire domestic help, should not use our policemen who are sent to protect them as domestic help,” he warned.

    On the penalty for any officer caught acting as servant, Arase said: “I have directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the airport that if they find any of you carrying boxes and rifle and dragging them all over the place, they should arrest you and you will be punished.”

    The police chief added that the Force would audit arms and ammunition after the inauguration ceremony.

  • Customs sanctions 20 officers for ‘illegal acts’

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said yesterday that it sanctioned 20 senior officers in the last two months for various illegal acts.

    The Service Public Relations Officer, Wale Adeniyi,  in a statement in Abuja, said nine officers were suspended, pending the outcome of investigations.

    He said:  “Eleven others are facing investigative panels set up by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dikko Abdullahi.

    “Five of them, including a Deputy Comptroller serving in Apapa Port, had appeared before the panel for negligence and improper examination of containers.

    “The others appeared before the same panel for offences ranging from hacking of passwords, falsification of academic certificates, negligence and general indiscipline.

    “Also mid-level management officers serving in the ports were also affected in the recent action as five Assistant Comptrollers serving in Tin Can Island Port were among those suspended from service for improper release of seizures.

    “Two others, also Assistant Superintendents serving in Seme Command, were suspended for alleged rape, an offence said to have been committed in Badagry area of Lagos.’’

    Adeniyi said the Comptroller-General had expressed regrets that the involvement of young officers recently recruited into the service in various illegal acts was worrisome.

    “Abdullahi had warned that the service will not tolerate such officers, noting that the machinery for investigations in the service will be strengthened to punish erring officers,” he said.

    Speaking on checkpoints, Adeniyi said the service would go after officers operating illegal checkpoints.

    He said the Comptroller-General had acknowledged persistent complaints on some routes, particularly around Kogi, Ondo and Edo states.

    “Abdullahi had assured motorists that special units of his office will conduct special surveillance operation to apprehend the culprits.”

    He also warned that officers operating such illegal check points would be severely punished.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that the service had earlier suspended three Assistant Superintendent of Customs for allegedly extorting $13,000 at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

    The officers allegedly extorted the money during the outward clearance of the passengers on Emirates Airline flight.

    The suspension now brings to 23 the number of those suspended by the NCS between January and March.

  • NBA Abuja inaugurates new officers

    The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice I. M. Bukar has inaugurated new officers of the Abuja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

    Justice Bukar, represented by Justice Jude Okeke, administered the oath to the 10 new officers who would run the association for the next two years.

    They are Mr. Agada Elachi (Chairman), Betty Umegbulem (Vice Chairman); Kola Omotunigbon, Secretary; Christopher Eiche, Treasurer; Chinedu Obienu, Welfare Secretary;  Silas Joseph Onu, Publicity Secretary and Obioma Ezenwabodo as Provost.

    Others are Nduka Okatta, Social Secretary; Philemon Yakubu, Financial Secretary and U.M.D. Umukoro as Assistant Social Secretary.

    The officers were elected on December 12, last year, but their swearing-in was delayed due to the strike by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) until January 29.

    The event was noted as the most attended inauguration in the history of the Branch.  Justice Ishaq U. Bello of the FCT High Court made glowing remarks on the cordial relationship that exists between the Bar and the Bench in the FCT.

    The event was attended by prominent Bar leaders in the FCT, including the NBA President, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN).

    He praised the branch for blazing the trail in conducting the first electronic voting by any branch of the NBA.

    Also at te event were the General Secretary of the NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), who was represented by a Director from the Ministry of Justice, Mr. P. I. Oteh. Two former Presidents of the NBA, Chief Bayo Ojo (SAN) and J. B. Daudu (SAN) were also present.

    Also present were: Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), Chief IkechuKwu Ezechukwu (SAN),  Chief Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN),  Chief S.I. Ameh (SAN), Chief Godwin Obla (SAN),  Chief Karina Tunyan (SAN),  Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN) and Director, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Pius I.  Oteh.

    Past and present national officers of the NBA were also in attendance.

    Forty-eight senior non-commissioned officers (SNCOs) and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) from the three services of the Armed Forces at the weekend completed the highest clerical staff duty course in Jaji, Kaduna State.

    The Commandant of the college, Air Vice-Marshal John Chris Ifemeje, urged them to always protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

    He stressed the need for the officers to further build on their knowledge, adding that the more enlightened they were, the more efficient they would function.

    Ifemeje said: “As supervisors, chief clerks and personal assistants, it is important to know that your superiors will depend on the knowledge you have gained here and, sometimes, the lives of your colleagues and innocent citizens of this country would depend on the decisions you make.”

  • Alumni elects officers

    fter a hectic campaign, horse trading and intrigues, which usually characterise associations’ elections on campuses, the battle for the leadership of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Alumni Association has finally been won and lost.

    The election held after overcoming the initial legal hurdle against it with the electoral committee conducting the poll, which led to the emergence of the new leadership for the association.

    Prof. Gabriel Umoh, Head, Department of Agriculture of the university, who came tops garnered 286 votes to beat Dr. Sonny Offiong of the Department of Sociology, who scored 115 votes.

    The position of the Director of Organisation went to Dr. Goddy Akpan of the Akwa Ibom State College of Education (CoE), Afaha Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of the state.

    Some candidates for other positions were returned unopposed. Their offices included Vice Chairman (North) given to Mr. Owen Owen; Secretary, Dr. Jude Iwok; Assistant Secretary, Miss Uduak Akai, and Financial Secretary Dr. Happiness Uduak.

    Others were: Treasurer, Mr. Samuel Gregory Effiong; Publicity Secretary, Mr. Justice Udousoro; Assistant Publicity Secretary, Mr. Manasseh Umoette,  and Legal Adviser, Mr. Michael Nyah.

    Prof. Umoh, who addressed reporters after the election, pledged to reconcile all aggrieved factions  to reposition the association.

    He said his executive would work towards the realisation of the vision and mission of the university and assist in the relocation of the institution to its permanent site at Nsukara on Nwaniba Road.

    Ohanaeze women elect officers

    The women’s wing of the Pan-Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, at the weekend in Enugu elected a new executive.

    Mrs. Calista Nkiru Adimachukwu was elected the national woman leader.

    She got 78 votes to beat her opponent, Mrs. Chika Ibeneme, who got 77 votes. Both hail from Anambra State.

    Election Committee’s Secretary Loretta Aniagolu said besides the National Women Leader’s office, 16 other positions were unopposed.

    Aniagolu explained that the women contested for the offices of the national women leader, deputy national women leader, national vice women leader for each state, secretary and treasurer.
