    Ogun govt: Utilise rubber potential

Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Bolu Owotomo, has emphasised the need to maximise rubber potential to strengthen the economy, boost jobs and enhance foreign exchange.

The commissioner spoke at a meeting with Managing Director of Divine Vision Cash Crop Farmers, Oluwatosin Jeremiah and Chairman of National Rubber Producers Processors and Marketing Association in Ogun, Oladele MacDaniel in Abeokuta.

He said rubber contributes to the economy by providing jobs and raw materials for agro-based industries, explaining Ilushin Rubber Estate in Ogun Waterside Local Government was undergoing re-organisation to set the pace for rubber in the state.

The commissioner, according to the ministry’s Press Officer, Gbenga Moronfolu, noted government was aware of the importance of the sub-sector and ready to partner with investors.

Earlier, Jeremiah said the company and others were in the state to identify where they could get supply for a plantation, expressing determination to grow and promote the rubber value chain. He solicited support for land to establish a plantation, promising his company would produce quality products.

MacDaniel implored government to give subsidies to rubber farmers, adding Public-Private Partnership (PPP) should be enhanced to develop the sub-sector.

Ogun gov, BHN unveil Nigeria’s first electric trucks

Nigeria’s push to join in an emission-free world got a boost last week with a private enterprise, BHN Transport and Logistics Limited uneveiling the country’s first electric trucks in Ogun State.

The 45-ton electric trucks, all kitted with heavy-duty battery compartments, were part of a number of green-friendly vehicles, inaugurated by the company to boost its logistics business and save costs.

The others were Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) trucks.

Ogun State Transport Commissioner Olugbenga Dairo performed the ceremony on behalf of Governor Dapo Abiodun, in Magboro, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

Abiodun whose state was the first to introduce CNG buses in Nigeria as part of his administration’s efforts to ease transportation challenges, hailed BHN for toeing the path of his administration in promoting an emission-free environment and greenery.

Abiodun also used the opportunity to highlight his government’s efforts to promote a green environment and introduce electric tricycles.

He said: We welcome this initiative by BHN. We will continue to ensure that businesses thrive in the state. We will encourage more investments by firms like BHN which has introduced electric and CNG vehicles to reduce cost and at the same time protect our environment from harmful emissions.”

BHN’s Head of Logistics, Mandhir Singh, who lauded the Abiodun administration for supporting private businesses, said the introduction of the electric trucks was in line with the logistics firm’s belief in creating possibilities for generations.

‘Our commitment to this cause is reflected in the introduction of these groundbreaking EV trucks, a testament to our vision and the well-being of our communities,’ Singh said.

He explained that by ‘introducing these eco-friendly and energy-efficient vehicles, the company has taken significant steps towards reducing carbon footprint, thereby improving air quality and contributing to a cleaner and healthier tomorrow.”

The milestone, according to him, “underscores BHN’s commitment to technological advancement and our readiness to embrace cutting-edge solutions in the transportation sector.”

  • Ogun’s dark communities

    Ogun’s dark communities

Is it true that about 20 communities in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Ogun State, have “not been supplied electricity from the national grid” for more than seven years?

That is the claim of the Chairman of the Ogun Waterside Patriotic Forum, Alhaji Dayo Oyenuga, in a publicised letter to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.  The letter was also signed by seven traditional rulers in the local government area.

According to the signatories, “the entirety of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area has been offline for more than seven years because the cables connecting us to the power sub-station have been carted away by vandals.

“The Local Government administration’s efforts to maintain or protect and at times replace the facilities parts whenever they were stolen have not yielded the desired result as the vandals seem to have capitalised on the non-supply of light (power) regularly to vandalise and cart away the aluminium cables.”

This picture indicates that the local government area also has security problems, which compounded the situation. Why do the said vandals find it so easy to steal the cables? This cannot be attributed only to darkness. It suggests poor law enforcement in the local government area.

They also said the communities made an attempt “to subscribe to an OFF-GRID merchant with a view to finding an alternative power supply, but the conditions precedent to such an arrangement were beyond us. So, we had to stop.”

They explained that the letter to the Ogun State House of Assembly was a last resort, “having exhausted all possible means of getting our electricity restored and yet without any result.”

The objective of the desperate communication, they said, was “to get our light restored with a view to taking the communities in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State out of total darkness that has been there since about seven years ago.”

They alleged that “some of our communities have never been remembered for electrification,” which is another matter. The authorities need to make a clarification regarding this particular allegation.

They complained that “All our efforts to get the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to restore our electricity have not yielded the desired result”; and hoped that “succour would come from a source like this hallowed chamber” to put an end to “pain and agony” in the communities.

The Ogun State government should look into this matter without delay. It’s inexcusable that these communities in the state have not enjoyed electricity supply for so long.

  • How leaders, followers can make Nigeria greater, by Abiodun

OGUN State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said leaders and followers have roles to play to make the country truly great.

He said Nigerians may not have a had an elaborate Independence anniversary this year due to some challenges, but the nation still had cause to be happy about many things.

The governor noted that for the nation to have overcome its many challenges showed the resilience of the people.

Abiodun, who spoke at the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O) Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, the state capital, expressed worry about the rate Nigerians flee the country in search of greener pastures.

The governor expressed concern that Nigeria was losing its best brains to developed nations due to perceived little opportunities at home.

He advised Nigerians, particularly the youths, to be more patriotic and give their best to the development of the country, instead of running to other countries where things may turn out to be “a mirage” for them.

Abiodun said: “At 59, our dear country still has much work to do. We must remain patriotic. We must put our nation first. It is worrisome that our people are migrating to other countries for greener pastures.

“While some of our current national challenges may make it tempting to seek fortunes outside our shores, we must also realise that these countries were once in our position with different challenges. And indeed, more often than not, the greener pasture is a mirage. We must not run away but stay and solve our problems together.

“I, therefore, use this medium to encourage our people to come together as one and solve our challenges for the greater good of our nation. If we do this, our great nation will be better.

“We must realise that we are Nigerians before any other affiliation; because of this, we should have the love of this country, whatever responsibilities that we are entrusted with. We should discharge them with fervour and commitment.

“Our 59 years of political independence as a nation have not been all glowing. Our dear country survived three traumatic years of the Civil War between 1967 and 1970; we had our civil liberties curtailed under different military juntas. We also experienced the 1993 political impasse which was close to a national crisis, but we survived it.

“Our experiences have taught us resilience; we have weathered together a lot of storm as a nation and people, and have come out stronger. It is a testament to our resilience that we are still standing as a country.

“Since 1999, we have continued to have civilian to civilian transition with each succeeding cycle better than the preceding one. And for this reason, we have cause to celebrate and thank God for keeping us together as a united nation whose diversity remains the tower of her strength.”

  • Question for Kashamu

WHY were items that should have been distributed in Ogun East Senatorial District, Ogun State, in 2016, still at Senator Kashamu Buruji’s Constituency Project Office in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in 2019, after he had left the Senate? Only Kashamu can answer this question.

Of course, news of the discovery and recovery of three ambulances and a 500 KVA transformer at Buruji’s Constituency Project Office by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) raised questions about so-called constituency projects.

ICPC spokesperson Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa said in a statement: “The three ambulances which were procured at the cost of N6million each were meant to be supplied to Obada Healthcare Centre, Oke Sopin in Ijebu North Local Government Area; Community Health Centre, Itele in Ijebu East Local Government Area; and Community Health Centre, Ogijo in Sagamu Local Government Area.”

According to her, “The transformer is the last of an initial 11 meant for distribution to various communities of Ogun East Senatorial District which were procured at the cost of N3.6million each, bringing the total for the entire 11 transformers to N39.5million.”

In June, ICPC had launched an investigation into N900bn constituency projects in states. The probe is to verify constituency projects executed by immediate past senators and members of the House of Representatives in the 8th National Assembly between 2015 and 2018. The verification will involve 180 key projects in the 36 states, with at least five projects identified for tracking in each state.

The first phase involves 12 states across the country’s six geo-political zones: Kogi and Benue (North-Central); Adamawa and Bauchi (North-East); Sokoto and Kano (North-West); Imo and Enugu (South-East); Lagos and Osun (South-West); and Akwa Ibom and Edo (South-South).

About 2, 516 projects were tracked between 2015 and 2017; 918 were not done, 395 were ongoing and 214 could not be located.  ICPC Chairman Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye had remarked: “Constituency projects are intended to be developmental, such as provision of water, rural electrification, rural clinics, schools, community centres and bursary for indigent students. In the light of annual budgetary allocations to constituency projects and based on actual releases by the government, it is firmly believed that the impact of constituency projects on the lives of ordinary Nigerians ought to be more visible…The concern is that in Nigeria, rather than address the needs of constituents, many constituency projects have become avenues of corruption.”

Interestingly, a concerned citizen had informed ICPC about the items at Buruji’s Constituency Project Office. Again, the question is: Why were the items still there when they should have been distributed in his senatorial district? Kashamu should answer.

  • Ogun deputy gov urges women engineers to be role models

Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has tasked the Association of Professional Women Engineers (APWEN) to be role models by encouraging younger girls to take up challenging careers like their male counterparts, describing engineering as a notable profession that is worthwhile.

Engr.  Salako-Oyedele, who gave this charge while receiving in audience the association led by its chairperson, Engr. Omolola Banjo, commended it for its interest in partnering the state government in the area of infrastructural development.

While pledging her readiness to support the association boost the image of engineers in the state, she lauded the group for its various initiatives targeted at empowering the girl child in nation building.

  • Mobile Money agent rapes’ colleague to death in Ogun

A MOBILE money agent, Eniola Adenuga, on Wednesday gave insight into why and how he ‘raped’ his female co-worker Faith Jude to death in their office around Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Adenuga said the girl just joined the company and quickly picked interest in her but added that despite having made countless advances to her with promises of treating her fine, she refused to accept his romantic overtures.

He added that as the affection for her kept building up, he contemplated seeking to have his way by force and an opportunity provided itself on a particular rainy evening when the victim came to the office to collect the day’s proceeds for their master.

A subdued Adenuga who spoke with reporters at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, while being paraded by the police, said he grabbed the girl, wrestled her to the ground and raped her after gagging her.

He added that he had scarcely concluded the rape  act when the girl died of suffocation.

The suspect is pleading for mercy,  saying he never meant to kill Faith Jude.

He said, “I raped her in the shop and she died in the process. I kept her corpse in the store.

“In early hours of the third day of the incident,  I placed her corpse in front of the shop and went to report at Lafenwa police station that I found a corpse in front of our shop.

“I had to confess during investigation that I actually covered her mouth with her underwear while I raped her to death.”

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr Edward Ajogun, who paraded  Adenuga,

said the suspect had on September 19 reported at the  Lafenwa Police division  that he came to his office and found the lifeless body of Jude in front of the office covered with a canopy.

Ajogun said upon his report,  the detectives from Lafenwa division went to the scene, carried out forensic examination of the place, took picture of the corpse and it was  discovered that there were marks of violence on the deceased body, suggesting she was murdered .

Ajogun said: “Based on the recovery,  the complainant was professionally interrogated,  and it was discovered that he was the person that actually killed the victim.

“He confessed to the crime and stated that the deceased, a co-worker came to the shop to collect money for their boss.

“He took advantage of the heavy downpour on the day to grab the deceased, gagged her mouth with a piece of cloth while he raped her.

“Having had his way with the girl,  he discovered that she had given up the ghost due to suffocation,” he said.

According to the Deputy Police Commissioner, the case is being investigated by the Homicide section of the command’s Criminal Investigation Department.

  • Abiodun: Development for the forgotten ones

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has made poverty abolition his priority. In this piece, Donald Oluwafisayo highlights the programmes of the administration to mitigate the suffering of the poor and enhance public welfare.

A major affliction that has hit the 36 states since the return to civil rule in 1999 is governance without vision.

While some, admittedly few and far between, have put in valiant efforts, it is a fact that in most cases, a significant portion of the states has rotted under ungoverned governors. The implication: what has been labelled development has been no more than the mere window dressing of the state capitals.

The rule seems to have been: site visible projects in the state capitals and one or two major cities that travelers will no doubt come in contact with, and then a second term of office is a done deal. But, then, even the development in the state capitals is circumscribed by location, meaning that the state capitals inevitably present two worlds: the new areas enjoying government patronage and the traditional slums still in full communion with degradation, poverty and want. In this connection, the point just cannot be ignored that Ogun, a state most contiguous to the country’s economic capital, Lagos, is happily presenting a new paradigm, one that promises to bring the ‘dividends of democracy’ to the forgotten neighbourhoods, the abandoned populations, hapless citizens who have been for ages no more than statistical incidentals in government agencies. For the first time in a life time, many ancient communities are seeing good roads, hospitals, schools and other facilities springing up before their very eyes, places that politicians only remembered during campaigns—places, let us remember, that have never mattered to government until now.

Through the direct labour agency, roads are now being cleared that were hitherto a nightmare to motorists, and this is being done simultaneously in all the local government areas of the state. For the first time since 1999, the point is being made, in practical terms, that development cannot be limited to major towns like Ijebu-Ode and Abeokuta; that every part of the state must feel government presence. A technology hub has been set up to rejig ICT across the state and enhance the ease of doing business, and two more to follow shortly. Surely, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s identifification of 236 schools across the state, one per ward for complete rehabilitation, will address the monumental rot in Ogun public schools, and it is ennobling that after this exercise, a new set of schools will enjoy the same treatment. The long and short of this is that there will be no ward without government’s educational presence. And with the approval of the years 2016 and 2017 promotion of 10,000 teachers, resolution of the MAPOLY crisis and its re-accreditation, implementation of the recommendations of the visitation panel on the Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) and the establishment of a Government Delivery Unit for Education, education in the state will begin to get back on track.

As in education, so in health: dilapidated hospitals are being given a facelift and more resident doctors employed to serve in the hitherto forgotten habitations. Primary health centres are being set up per ward so that people can enjoy health services without travelling miles away from home. At the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, the recruitment process for all categories and cadres of healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, radiographers, etc) has already commenced, as has the rehabilitation of the State Hospital Ilaro. The government has already organised free medical outreach at Ilishan, Odeda and Ilaro, addressing polio, diabetes, malaria, eyes, malaria, typhoid and other issues. There is the anchor borrowers scheme with several hectares of land acquired and distributed to agropreneurs, a project for which N1.5 billion is being accessed from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The initial 2000 agro-preneurs  have been allocated 1ha of land each. It must be music to the ears of Ogun citizens that their governor wants to take advantage of land resources to build agriculture and provide food for people through a project that attracts a zero digit interest rate; one which has  a mechanism for tracking efficiency. Again, about 120,000 citizens are already registered on the job portal created by the state government, the essence being to know who to employ when vacancies arise in government. And if there are companies interested in Ogun State, they will place their adverts on the job portal and applications can then be received through it. It certainly not fortuitous that appropriate legislation and executive orders have been put in place to ensure accountability and prudence in the management of government resources, including the implementation of the medium term expenditure framework for budget preparation, establishment of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission for prudent financial management of state resources; efficient allocation of public expenditure, revenue and debt management; long-term economic stability of the state. Nor can the establishment of public Private Partnership (PPP) Office, implementation of staff biometrics and payroll audit and treasury management solution for single view and efficiency in treasury and payment processing and  the establishment of the Bureau of Public Procurement Council be less development-oriented.

The state is actively pursuing investment initiatives, and has already undertaken an amendment of the Investment Promotion Agency (IPA) / Ogun Invest Bill to actualise this objective. It has held a business roundtable with CEOs and business executives in the private sector and established the Ogun State Business Environment Council to improve and streamline the state’s internal processes towards achieving better scores in the ease of doing business ranking, as well as the Enterprise Development Agency (EDA) for capacity building and facilitation of financing access to support the MSMEs sector. In this regard, the executive order for the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project Implementation Structures, as part of the requirements for the establishment of Project Steering Committee (PSC), Project Implementation Unit (PIU) for the $250m World Bank loan, is a step in the right direction. It has initiated a creative arts and entertainment hub in conjunction with Shared Agent Network Expansion Facility Limited (SANEF) to further deepen development at the grass roots.

The foregoing, though, should leave no one with the impression that Abiodun wants to abandon the state capital and the major towns. He has already commenced 50 units of housing development at Hilltop Estate Abeokuta, and there is the 200 low income, mass housing units project at Ibara Abeokuta. In any case, if the etablishment of the Ogun Sports Commission is geared towards youth development, issues of social welfare are encapsulated in the empowerment of 1000 Widows by the wife of the Governor, launching of ‘Okowo Dapo’ loan programme with 2000 initial beneficiaries of N10,000 each. There is of course the overarching issue of security, where the procurement of 100 pick-up patrol vehicles, 200 motor bikes for the state law enforcement agencies, sourcing of Helicopter from the Presidency for aerial surveillance and the amendment of the Security Trust Fund (STF) Law and the inauguration of the STF Board are all expected to enhance governance objectives. Not a few Nigerians would hope that the informal sector enumeration and resident registration, centralisation and automation of the administration and management of key revenue toll points, will drive revenue, along with the commencement of the energy sector reforms. For a government that has in just three months given the Ijebu Ode Stadium a facelift and established the Ogun State Public Works Agency, Ogun State Waste Management Agency and Government Delivery Unit for Infrastructure, the best is certainly yet to come.

  • Invest more in education, Daniel urges govt, others

FORMER Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel has urged all stakeholders to invest more in the Education sector to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

He said this would lead to rapid transformation and development of the society and nation.

Daniel spoke on Tuesday at the 40th Founder’s Day of Ososa Comprehensive High School, Ososa-Ijebu in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The former governor lauded foremost industrialist, Adebola Adegunwa, for his intervention in the development of the school.

Daniel, who was the chairman of the occasion, also urged other Nigerians to emulate the philanthropic gesture of the industrialist by assisting in the rehabilitation of infrastructure and development of schools in their areas.

Adegunwa warned parents against abandoning the roles of building good characters in their children.

The industrialist noted that “children are the real gratuities and pensions of parents at old age”.

He said one of the ways to ensure a happy life at old age is to give quality education to one’s children.

Adegunwa added that quality education would enhance children’s competence to care for their parents at old age.

The industrialist said he was appalled by the state of the classrooms and decided to rehabilitate them.

“I charge the parents to strive and give sound education to their wards. Also, good character is foundation in the development of these young adults. Without any doubt, school learning drives growth, but it does not strongly build character and values.

“I have noticed that parents abandon their responsibilities and duties, but these are required to build good characters in their offspring. I implore you to make a change because those children are your gratuities and pensions during old age,” Adegunwa said.

According to him, the school in his hometown will continue to enjoy his philanthropic gestures as he personally develops the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre.

The philanthropist said the centre would also serve the needs of pupils from neighbouring Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) as well as the community.

Global President of Ososa Comprehensive High School Old Students’ Association (OCOSA) Prof. Obatunde Bright Adetola, implored the pupils to draw motivation in the model of the old students who had distinguished themselves in their chosen careers.

  • A lift for Ogun community

FOR the people of Aba Temidire in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, it is time to smile again as a humanitarian group based in Lagos, Live and Love Support Initiative has promised to provide them with quality and safe water.

The director, Oyindamola Sanusi said the group’s focus is to reach out to the less privileged, stressing that the initiative revolves round showing love to people generally and making their lives better. She maintained that their activities are underpinned by the philosophy of service to God and humanity.

She said, “We reach out mostly  to  people in the slum; widows, teenagers, orphans, the aged. Our aim is to show love to those set of people, transform their lives and make them believe that there is more to their existence. We want to achieve our objectives by organizing different programmes in various communities.”

While speaking on their current project she said, “We have a campaign tagged: Let’s Give Water to Aba Temidire ,which is slated for September 20.It was discovered that the community lacks quality water, hence we decided to create awareness and raise funds towards the construction of a borehole to serve them.”
