    French investors eye Ogun agro-cargo airport

    The former French Minister of Transport, Mr. Djebbari Jean-Baptiste, has expressed the desire of investors from his country to invest in the transport sector of Ogun State, especially the agro-cargo airport.

    Other areas of interest for the investors, according to Mr. Jean-Baptiste, are the Dry Port, the Olokola Sea Port, and the railway system.

    Fielding questions from reporters after a closed-door meeting with the Governor Dapo Abiodun, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Mr. Jean-Baptiste said he was impressed with the level of infrastructural facilities at the airport, hence the need to draw the attention of French investors to the state.

    Ogun PHCs to be revitalised

    Ogun State Government and the World Bank IMPACT Project have held a mobilisation training and briefing with successful contractors for the Revitalisation Project of 75 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC) across the state to strengthen  healthcare service delivery.

    Executive Secretary, Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board (OGSPHCDB), Dr Elijah Ogunsola, said the milestone event marked the official kick-off of the project aimed at transforming the state’s primary healthcare infrastructure.

    He said the  meeting serves as a platform for bringing together, stakeholders and contractors to familiarise themselves with the project’s objectives, scope, and timelines towards a common goal of delivering top-notch healthcare services to the people.

     “The successful execution of the PHC Revitalisation Project is expected to have a profound impact on the state’s healthcare landscape. By renovating and equipping primary healthcare centres, the government aims to increase access to quality healthcare services, particularly for rural and underserved communities, which will contribute to improved health outcomes, reduced morbidity and mortality rates, and enhanced overall well-being,” Ogunsola said.

     He said that the project’s focus on revitalising primary healthcare centres, aligns with the Governor Dapo Abiodun’s goal of ensuring the welfare, wellness, and well-being of citizens particularly ìn rural areas.

     World Bank Consultant on Impact Project, Arc. Bolaji Anjorin stated that the contractors were selected through a rigorous process in the area of documentation and budget, adding that the training would bring all stakeholders on the same page.

     He  stated that the monitoring team which would comprise World Bank representatives, state Impact teams, contractors and other monitoring officers who would work  towards ensuring proper monitoring of the project.

    Ogun’s N1.05t budget to boost development, prosperity, says commissioner

    Ogun State Government has said 2025 budget of N1.05trn is aimed at executing projects that will set the state on the path of development and prosperity.

    Chief Economic Adviser and Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, said this during the highlight and breakdown of the budget tagged: ‘Budget of Hope and Prosperity’, held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

    He said increase in the 2025 budget was to continue on the implementation of qualitative and affordable education, health care delivery, housing, provision of critical road infrastructure, youth empowerment and other essential services for the good of the people.

    Okubadejo said the state’s budget had increased from N335billion in 2020 to N1.1trillion in 2024 as a result of the reforms put in place and the blockage of leakages and loopholes.

    He said: “We have increased our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through reforms in land, payments, industry, trade and investment where you can do business online. We have also done a lot of internal reforms to drive efficiency as well as digitised internal revenue service.”

    The commissioner said Ogun State was expected to generate N194billion from Ministries, Departments and Agencies, N121billion from internal revenue service and N228million from federal allocation from N199billion in 2024.

    Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, said the N1.05trillion budget was broken down into N600billion for Capital and N400billion for Recurrent Expenditure, ‘’which is a 50 per cent increase over the 2024 budget, which stood at N703billion.

    “For us, what is significant, which is why we keep coming first whenever we are ranked in the IGR and its sustainability is that the percentage of our funding from the federation account keeps going down and this is a deliberate attempt on the part of this government to ensure sustainability.

    “We will spend more on capital expenditure than we spend on recurrent. Personnel cost is expected to be N125billion, which is 12 per cent, overhead cost of N216billion or 20 per cent of the budget and consolidated charge of four per cent, giving us a total Recurrent Expenditure of N455billion, which is 43 per cent,” Olabimtan said.

    Gunmen yesterday killed the Shepherd-in-charge of a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko Border town in Ipokia Local Government area of Ogun State.

    The suspected assassins stormed the service while the deceased, identified as Yomi Adetula, was delivering his sermon and shot him in the presence of the congregation.

    The incident occurred around 11a.m..

     An Ogun State-based activist lawyer, Bankole Alani, shared the tragic incident on his Facebook page.

    However, other sources said a six-man gang armed with AK-47 rifles and disguised in the church’s garments, had invaded the Hebrew Celestial Church at the Odo Eran, the Old Garage Road and fired a gale of bullets on the deceased cleric.

    A resident of the Ring Road area of Owode-Egba, Ogun State, Sholola Kazeem, has been arrested for attacking his wife, Sholola Mutiat, with hot oil, severely peeling her skin in the process.

    Sholola also stabbed the wife in her head with a knife before neighbours rescued and rushed the woman to the hospital in the area.

    The spokesperson of Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the assault said it was a gender-based violence and that it happened on Saturday.

    Odutola said the victim was taken to Ore Ofé Hospital for medical attention, and the suspect had been apprehended and is currently being investigated.

    “The Divisional Police Officer(DPO) in Owode Egba Division has promptly intervened in a case involving gender-based violence and assault against a housewife, leading to the arrest of her husband for causing various injuries to her.

     “On January 18, 2025, at about 12:20 hrs the divisional police officer received a report from members of the Ring Road community regarding an incident involving Sholola Kazeem, a male resident, and his wife, Sholola Mutiat, who reside at the same address.

     “It was reported that Sholola Kazeem, in an uncontrollable anger over a misunderstanding, poured hot oil over his wife’s body and also stabbed her in the head,” she said.

    Ogun ramps up efforts to fight banditry, convenes security meeting

    Ogun state government has set mechanisms in motion to tackle insecurity across the state over the alleged invasion of the South-West geo-political zone by suspected bandits.

    This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media & Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, on Friday.

    The statement said that the government is in firm control of its security architecture through robust collaboration among security agencies and local security apparatus.

    The statement explained that part of the strategy to secure farmlands was the heavy deployment of armed security guards at the local level to protect farmers in their farms as well as constant security patrols.

    It noted that the present security arrangements in the state were evident in the atmosphere of peace in all the nooks and crannies of the state during the festive period.

    The statement said: “The recent reported influx of banditts from the North into the South-West coincided with the recent security meeting of the heads of security agencies in Ogun State. After a careful review of the state of security in the state, the agencies resolved to redouble their efforts to sustain the unprecedented peace and tranquility the state has been enjoying in the past few months, especially during the recently concluded Christmas and new year celebrations, leaving no room for destabilizing infiltration of bandits from from any part of the country.

    “Our security agencies have therefore, revitalized their winning formula and strategies, including visible presence in every nook and cranny of the sate, patrols, manning of key and vulnerable points, blackspots, intelligence-led operations, community partnership and inter-agency cooperation.

    “In addition to this, residents of the state have been alerted to the information and reminded of their civic obligation to join hands with the police to address the threat posed by armed banditry by being extra-vigilant, and report any suspicious movements of persons, especially strange faces in the communities. In particular, commercial farmers have been advised to continue to utilize the services of armed security guards and escorts to access their farms.

    “Also, local hands have been deployed to help mount surveillance at their farms to assist their safe entry and exit from the farms, do everything possible to enhance visibility in and around their farms through lighting and erection of security towers.”

    The statement also acknowledged the ongoing synergy between Ogun and Oyo State in sharing intelligence with regards to movement and operation of suspected bandits around the axis.

    The statement continued: “It is important to state we already have some useful tips for a well honed-agenda to annihilate the bandits should they step into Ogun State. In pursuit of this legitimate goal, all ethnic groups in Ogun State, the Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Fulani, Edo, Igala, Urohbo, Ebira, and numerous other ethnic groups are united by a common goal to jointly fight whoever comes to disturb the peaceful environment in Ogun State.

    “It is also important to reiterate the state government’s warning to decisively deal with anybody who procures or provide accommodation for any bandit of any ethnic extraction to operate in Ogun State. Such a person will face the wrath of the law.”

    Three OOU students die, two injured as car plunges into bush

    An auto accident along Ago – Iwoye – Ilisan road has claimed the lives of three students of Olabisi Obasanjo University Ago – Iwoye, Ogun State.

    The accident, which occurred at about 3.30 pm on Friday due to “overspeeding,” also injured two other students of the institution.

    Superintendent of Police (SP) Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer at Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the accident on Saturday, December 21.

     SP Odutola identified the vehicle involved as an Opel Safira with a license plate Lagos AAA-126HE, driven by Adekunkle Adebiyi, a resident of Sunmibare Street, Awa Ijebu.

    “The Opel car was travelling at high speed towards Ilisan from the Ago Iwoye direction when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to flip into the bushes. A male passenger whose identity has not yet been confirmed but is believed to be a student from OOU died at the scene. His body has been taken to the General Hospital Ijebu Ode mortuary.

    “Additionally, two female students from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Dada Oluwanifesimi, 18, a sophomore in Mass Communication, and Miracle Ogo Oluwa Daniel, 19, a junior—were rushed to Love and Care Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment. Two other OOU students are currently receiving medical care at the OOU Medical Centre on the mini Campus. The vehicle has been recovered and is being stored safely at the station,” SP Odutola stated.

    Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Prof. Ayodeji Agboola,  has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the Friday, December 20 fatal accident along the Ilisan-Ago-Iwoye road.

    The lone fatal accident claimed the lives of three students of OOU who were identified as Nifesimi Dada, 300 Level Geology; Opeyemi Joshua, 200 Level Taxation; and Ogooluwa Miracle Daniel, 200 Level Mass Communication.

    A statement on Saturday by the spokesperson of the university, Wale Balogun, quoted Prof. Agboola as stating that the university remains deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the students in the incident.

    Effective remittance of revenue into government coffers requires innovative approach, adequate checks and balances, as well as proper tax education and public enlightenment.

     Executive Chair of Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Olugbenga Olaleye, spoke during its Mid-Year Performance Review and Strategy virtual session.  Olaleye said the agency would find solutions on how to generate more money for government.
