The outreach, powered by Serah Olaniyan Initiative (SOI), is a nonprofit organisation that gives food, clothes and medical supplies to the aged and vulnerable people in rural communities.

The initiator, Mrs. Olaniyan, said most rural areas are lacking social welfare, and this outreach is trying to support government in reaching out to the needy through donors and sponsors.

She added “although, we cannot reach everyone, we give out food items, drugs, free medical tests and clothing to the vulnerable. This is self funded, with the support of well meaning people”.

Speaking at the program in Atan-Ota, she said: “We are grateful to Jawa International for their support. Many residents of Agoro benefited from our free Blood Pressure tests, and we gave out blood tonics, cough syrups, malaria drugs, among others.”

Mrs. Olaniyan also appealed to more well meaning individuals and corporate organisations to assist with relief materials so the vulnerable people in other communities can benefit.

  • Women in Ogun community protest alleged Police harassment

Women in Ogun community protest alleged Police harassment

Women in three villages in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State have protested the alleged harassment of their people by some policemen in their community, urging the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and state Commissioner of Police (CP), Lanre Ogunowo, to intervene in the matter.

The women, who are from Saari, Erinle and Okiki-Ilu villages, among others, came out half clothed bemoaning the pains they had suffered in the hands of the police. They accused the police attached to the Agbara Area Command and Atan of aiding some suspected land grabbers on Monday who brutalised their people.

A family Head, Pa Solomon Odutola, said the police men went around the villages looking for some of their people over land matters that were decided in their favour by the Supreme Court since 2014. As a result, he added, they had to flee for dear life. Still, the police arrested and detained some of them.

Giving a background, the Akogun of Saari Village, Chief Elijah Adeogun, affirmed that the Akowonwado family are the rightful owners of the disputed land, comprising seven villages of Oko-omi, Saari, Erinle, Okiki-Ilu, Ilasa, Akinleye and Ore-Akinde.

Adeogun claimed that the Awori fathers had a legal battle with the Egba on the disputed land all the way to the Supreme Court where the Akowonwado family got a favourable judgment against Akinde and their Egba collaborators.

Also, he said  the Supreme Court dismissed the suit number SC 259/2001 by the Akore family of May 21, 2004, as lacking merit.

However, when they thought the matter had been settled, not so a group of land grabbers who came up to lay claims to the land, brandishing dangerous weapons. Since then, Adeogun continued, they had known no peace as the land grabbers kept disturbing them.

He said they have the relevant documents to show they are the owners on the land.

Akogun called on the IGP, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 and state Commissioner of Police to save them and their ancestral land.

Efforts to reach the state Police Command failed. Its Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Omolola Odutola, said he could only speak on the matter after a directive by the commissioner. The commissioner could not be reached as at press time.

But, a source close to the Area Command said they were deployed there to avert clashes between the two families, adding that it is their responsibility to intervene and that the CP was aware of their activities.

Akogun does not agree. He said the matter was being handled by the IGP, following their petition to him and that the IGP had directed the DIG Area 10 in the Force headquarters, Abuja to handle the matter. He said the DIG had kicked off investigation, as the two parties had been summoned to a meeting in Abuja last Wednesday, and asked that they maintain status quo ante until the matter was resolved.

He said: “It is, therefore, an affront on the DIG’s order for the DPO Atan Police Station to have marched his men to that land under any guise, leading to hapless old women to strip themselves naked in protest to the overbearing attitude of his men.’’

Pa Odutola explained that there was no need for the police to wade in since the Ota High Court sitting at Ota on May, 15, this year, restrained the state Police headquarters, Agbara Area Command and Atan Police Station from further arrests and high-handedness.

He described their police action as “”a gross contravention and a breach of the fundamental right of our family’’.

  • Fed Govt partners Ogun on Renewed Hope cultural, creative project

Fed Govt partners Ogun on Renewed Hope cultural, creative project

The Ogun State Government and the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the execution of Renewed Hope Cultural and Creative Projects in the state.

The framework of the MoU includes the establishment of a Renewed Hope Cultural Village, preservation and reservation of tourist sites, capacity building, and economic empowerment, among others.

Governor Dapo Abiodun signed on behalf of the state, while the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, signed on behalf of the Federal Government.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Abiodun described tourism as a money spinner if properly harnessed, saying that the state would collaborate with the federal government to strengthen tourism and culture, as it provides employment opportunities, expands economic activities, and unites the people.

He said: “Tourism provides employment opportunities by keeping people busy. Culture, on the other hand, unites our people; therefore, there is a need for us to focus on it.

“Our people are endowed with creativity but do not have the platform to showcase their talents. Presenting our culture to the youths has attracted their attention, and they have started connecting back to their roots.”

He said Ogun State parades some of the best festivals in the country, which include Orona Day, Lisabi Day, Remo Day, and the famous Ojude Oba Festival, noting that tourist sites like Olumo Rock, Centenary Hall, the first church and Bible in Nigeria, and a host of others are veritable sites that could appeal to tourists.

His administration, Governor Abiodun emphasized, has provided the needed infrastructure to support the tourism sector and is now focused on rehabilitating tourism sites to make them centers of attraction for tourists.

“We want to use tourism as a platform to project our state even further. We have seen in other countries that have similar backgrounds to Nigeria where they started as an oil-producing nation, and today, oil has become the third or fourth revenue earner because tourism has taken over and has become the largest source of revenue for their economy.

“If that can happen in those countries where nobody thought could ever be the hub for visitors, compared to a country like Nigeria, which is so uniquely positioned and blessed, people should be able to explore our tourism potential and see what we have,” he observed.

While expressing satisfaction with the new cultural awakening in the country, he said, “I am glad that we are finally on our way back to re-exploring. There is a cultural renaissance that is sweeping through the length and breadth of Nigeria. In terms of culture and tourism, Ogun State is a force to be reckoned with.”

Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, said her visit was to kick-start President Tinubu’s directive to collaborate with state governments to strengthen and showcase the cultural uniqueness of each state with a view to exposing them to the outside world.

“Mr. President earlier in the year announced a project whereby he wants the federal government to do a handshake with the state governments, whereby we will build a sort of sustainable future, sustainable economic growth, and job creation. We need feasibility for culture across the states.

“We know every single state has a unique peculiarity, so what he wanted us to do, in a way, is this handshake that will allow the states to drive the conversations, as every state knows what is within it.

“When we do the handshake and MoU, the states will populate the MoU with their unique requests and look at how we can build on the heritage sites, build on the monuments, and expand the creative industry to domesticate tourism and boost domestic tourism.

“The federal government is offering this handshake, partnership, and collaboration in this Renewed Hope Cultural and Creative Project. That is the mission and vision of Mr. President, so that we can continue as a nation to change the narrative about Nigeria, reposition Nigeria to drive the narrative of who we are as a people through the power of our culture, our talents, creativity, and beautiful landscape,” she said.

Ogun State, the Minister added, is full of culture, beautiful landscapes, and people, maintaining that what makes the country great, dynamic, and exciting could be traced to the state, as it parades notable personalities. She added that with the takeoff of the project, the state is about to experience “something extremely special.”

26-year-old suspect did not die in Police Custody – Ogun CP

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, Lanre Ogunlowo, has clarified that John, a 26-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a cleric, died in the hospital and not in police custody.

This follows widespread reports by several reports (Not The Nation) claiming the suspect died in police custody, weeks after allegedly murdering the 65-year-old prophetess in her apartment located within the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Ogun state.

According to earlier reports, the suspect was seen attempting to break into the residence of the Prophetess on May 15, 2025, using a digging tool. A concerned neighbour who confronted him was allegedly chased away. The neighbour then fled and alerted police officers at a nearby checkpoint.

By the time officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had reportedly attacked the prophetess with a shovel in what was described as a brutal and fatal assault.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the Police operatives from the Ogun State Command arrested the suspect at the scene by shooting him in the leg. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to being sent to kill the prophetess and her children, though he refused to reveal the identity of those who sent him.

The Prophetess, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, on Friday, May 16. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Contrary to online reports, the Ogun State Police Command insists the suspect did not die in custody. While the family of the deceased prophetess alleged he died while in police custody, the police have denied this.

However, when contacted, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, stated that the suspect was arrested by officers from the Imala Divisional Police Station. According to CP Ogunlowo, “I called the Divisional Police Officer of Imala Station. The suspect was shot in the leg after trying to flee the crime scene. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Weeks later, the prophetess died, followed by the suspect, who died in the hospital, not in the police station.”

This came on the heels of the protest that rocked the Ijebu – Ode – Epe road on Saturday where residents and transporters blocked the highway to demand to extortion and high toll fees being collected by the road managers appointed by the state government.

Okubadejo noted the rehabilitated roads would reduce travel time through the tollgate and ease the cost burden on local commuters.

He affirmed that the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun had granted waivers to motorcycle and tricycle users and operators plying the Ijebu-Ode–Mojoda corridor, in line with campaign promises to cushion the effects of economic hardship in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional institutions, the Aladeken of Oke-Ako, Oba Joshua Osunsami, commended the State Government for the road construction, describing it as a major relief for the affected communities.

He joined other stakeholders in appealing to the government to review the toll fees at the Ijebu-Ode–Mojoda gate and consider opening turning points for certain communities before the toll plaza, to mitigate the impact of the prevailing economic challenges.
