  • Return of Dangote to Ogun State

Return of Dangote to Ogun State

Sir: These are probably the best of times for the government and people of Ogun State. For a state widely referred to as the gateway state and the industrial hub of the nation, it is about to witness the establishment of two gigantic projects, that is the building of another cement plant with a capacity of 6.0 million metric tons per annum, at Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area, and the construction of the biggest port at Olokola, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

What gladdens the mind is that this same cement plant was pushed out of the state few years ago due to some misunderstanding between the Dangote Group and the immediate past administration. For those who might want to know the sudden change of Dangote’s mind, it is imperative to look at the current administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun and his disposition to investors vis-a- vis investments.

Abiodun, apart from being the number one promoter of investments in the region is also working assiduously to attract more investors to the state. He anchored his vision on leading a focused government that brings prosperity to the state and its people through public private partnership believing that no government or country could succeed in its development drive without active participation and contributions of the private sector.

To encourage the private sector, the state government embarked on policy reforms and put in place needed infrastructure, like good road network and of course carried out a comprehensive overhaul of the security architecture to make the state safe for business and leisure.

For those who have come across the president of Dangote group, Aliko Dangote, he is a man who does not do things out of sentiment or emotions. He will not invest his hard earned money where the atmosphere is not conducive for business. To him, Ogun has really changed and the ambience is conducive enough for his two gigantic projects to make their way back to the state.

To show that he meant what he said, he suggested that the state in addition of being known as the Gateway state, should add another title to its name as ‘the Bed Rock State” for being one of the most attractive investment destinations in Nigeria.

It should be recalled that Dangote pulled out of the state some years ago when the administration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun destroyed his cement plant that was being constructed at Itori. Therefore, his return to Ogun, the state he once abandoned due to infrastructural and policy challenges, speaks volumes about the evolving economic landscape and opportunities under the current administration.

Dangote’s return is not just symbolic—it comes with massive financial commitments. His company is reconstructing the Itori cement plant with two new production lines, each with a capacity of 6.0 million metric tons per annum. Combined with the Ibeshe plant’s output, Ogun State is poised to become the largest cement producer in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, with a total production capacity of 18 million metric tons per year.

But Dangote’s ambitions don’t stop at cement as he has also announced plans to revive the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) and construct Nigeria’s largest port at Olokola. This development, if realized, could significantly boost Nigeria’s logistics sector, reducing dependence on the congested Lagos ports while enhancing international trade.

Sure, the return of Dangote cement plant at Itori and the deep sea port at Olokola will drive further the industrialization process and the economic development of Nigeria and make Ogun State to continue to be the nation’s industrial hub.

Residents rescue man gagged by wife, sons over pension benefits

Residents of Oko-Filling, a sleeping neighbourhood in Araromi, Ijoko, Sango Ota, Ogun State have rescued a man gagged and left for death by his wife and children over his retirement benefits. It was gathered that the incident occurred in the wee hours of last Thursday at the family’s residence.

Trouble was said to have started over the man’s alleged refusal to hand his retirement benefits to his wife and sons.

It was gathered that after collecting his benefit, the man allegedly opened two shops for his wife at Abule and gave her N3million.

He was said to have bought a vehicle for himself at N12million since the family lived in their own house in the community.

Dissatisfied with the sharing formula, his wife and sons, all graduates, allegedly teamed up to get more money from him.

The man was said to have sold the vehicle shortly after buying it, a development that raised questions in the neighbourhood.

A landlord who told The Nation about the incident, said the man was found in his home with his mouth, hands and feet bound.

“He was tied like an animal to be slaughtered. They (his wife and kids) got some Aboki men, about six of them, to tie him up. It was the strange noise from their parking that alerted residents who gathered in front of the house to know what was happening,” he said.

Residents rescue man gagged by wife, sons over pension benefits

Residents of Oko-Filling, a quiet neighborhood in the Araromi area of Ijoko, Sango Ota, have rescued a man who was gagged and left for dead by his wife and children over a dispute regarding his retirement benefits.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, March 13, at the family’s residence.

Trouble began when the man allegedly refused to hand over his entire retirement benefits to his wife and four sons. After receiving his payout, he reportedly opened two shops for his wife at Abule and gave her N3 million. He also purchased a vehicle worth N12 million for himself, considering that the family already owned a house in the community.

However, his wife and sons—all of whom are graduates—were allegedly dissatisfied with the way the money was shared and sought to extract more from him.

The situation escalated when the man sold the vehicle shortly after purchasing it, raising suspicions among neighbors.

A landlord in the area, who spoke to The Nation, said the man was later found inside his home with his mouth, hands, and feet bound.

“He was tied like an animal to be slaughtered. They (his wife and kids) got some Aboki men, about six of them to tie him up. It was the strange noise from their parking that alerted residents who gathered in front of the house to know what was happening.

“Landlords in the area who could not endure the noise at that hour, decided to go out and find out what was wrong. When they got to his compound, they saw a Korope (small bus) outside packing properties.

“His wife and sons were the ones packing and so, the residents asked after the man. When the response given was not satisfactory, they forced themselves inside the house and saw the man completely bound with the Aboki people still inside the house, as though they were waiting to kill him.

“The man was untied and rushed to the hospital. He’s still at the hospital receiving treatment. The suspects were all taken to the police station. One of the Aboki men confessed it was the man’s wife that contracted them to tie him up. They were all taken to the police station that morning,” said the landlord.

Similarly, an audio message recorded by the chairman of the Anjomo Community Development Association (CDA), Emmanuel Omola, corroborated the information from the landlord.

According to Omola, the woman had gone to the police station to report that her husband wanted to kill her.

He said: “The evening of 12th March, the wife went to the police station to report that her husband wanted to kill her. The police told her to go and get a bus to convey the policemen to her house to arrest her husband. She left the station and didn’t return.

“By the time she got to the neighbourhood, she went inside the house with some Aboki to tie the man and when they started packing the belongings, that was when the neighbours heard noise and that was what made them all gather there.

“By the time they got there, they saw that the children had come with a small bus (Korope) and they had packed loads there and were leaving.

“The residents entered the house and they met Aboki there and saw the man tied. The Aboki and the owner of the tricycle that conveyed them there confessed that it was the wife that called them.”

Omola advised people to always ask questions whenever they hear unusual noise in their surroundings.

“We shouldn’t be nonchalant about it, let us respond quickly. If not that the landlords responded fast, I believe the Abokis that were brought into that house wanted to kill that man, that’s what they have been told to do.

“So, if we hear noises in our neighbour’s house, we shouldn’t say it doesn’t concern us, just a swift response can save lives. If not that the landlords in the neighborhood went out, the man would have died.

“Now, the man is in the hospital, they said his penis is swollen. His wife, children and the Aboki are in the police station.

“Those of you who receive pension, know how you tell your family. I think the pension the man received is what almost led to his death.”

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State, CSP Omolola Odutola, said the incident was yet to be brought to her attention.

  • Ogun begins tolling on Epe-Mojoda-Ijebu-Ode expressway

Ogun begins tolling on Epe-Mojoda-Ijebu-Ode expressway

Ogun State Government has announced the commencement of tolling operations on the Epe-Mojoda-Ijebu-Ode expressway from Monday March 24, 2025 for sustainable road maintenance, efficient operations as well as enhanced road safety.

The 14.7km road had been in a poor state of repair for many years, making it a dangerous and unsatisfactory route for commuters.

However, the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun re-built the road into a modern expressway with up to date facilities, including toll booths.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Director-General, Office of the Public-Private Partnerships, Hon. Dapo Oduwole, said the reason for not tolling the road immediately upon its opening for use, despite its PPP arrangement, was predicated on the magnanimity of Governor Abiodun and his resolve to make life comfortable for the people of the state.

The statement explained the Governor considered the expressway as a strategic corridor for economic activities between Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos and Ogun State; hence, the urgency for its completion.

The Director-General further stated that road users can comfortably ply the road without hindrance of any form, as necessary amenities were provided to make it one of the best in the country.

“Prince Dapo Abiodun, upon assumption of office and in the course of designing an effective and efficient transport system that will boost the micro economy of the state, discovered the economic importance of the Epe-Mojoda-Ijebu-Ode Expressway.

“The government had opted for a public private partnership arrangement in the management of the asset including the collection of tolls. The government magnanimously delayed the rolling operations on that road since 2021 to provide some relief to residents and other road users.

“Meanwhile, while considering the interests of the people, we must also take into cognizance the economic interests of the investors for us to strike a balance, hence the need to commence tolling operations on the road after about four years of using it free of any charge.

“It is pertinent to note that some road users have been exempted from this tolling obligation. These include emergency response vehicles, such as ambulances, fire service, and patrol vehicles.

“Others are government-owned security vehicles, Ogun State Government official vehicles, and any others as determined by the Ogun State Government.

“We, therefore, urge all road users to comply with these tolling regulations as enforcement measures will be implemented to the fullest without fear or favor,” the statement reads..

Ogun to benefit as world’s largest protein producer invests $2.5bn in Nigeria

Ogun State, Nigeria’s leading investment destination, is set to benefit significantly as JBS, the world’s largest protein producer from Brazil, has expressed interest in investing $2.5 billion in Nigeria’s livestock subsector.

Wesley Batista, the controlling shareholder of JBS, revealed this during a visit to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Sunday.

The delegation was led by the controlling shareholder of EMN, Mr. John Coumantaros.

Batista described Nigeria as Africa’s economic hub with vast human and natural resources.

He emphasized the country’s potential and reiterated JBS’s commitment to leveraging its expertise in livestock production to enhance Nigeria’s agricultural economy.

He said: “We have been talking and learning about Nigeria. We had the privilege to meet the Nigerian delegation in Brazil when President Bola Tinubu visited our country. We see Nigeria as the hub of Africa with a very large population.

“Though it is our first time in Nigeria, we feel that we have a lot of similarities between Brazil and Nigeria. We have a very good impression so far about Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We are serious about coming to Nigeria to invest in beef, pork, chicken, among others. We see growth prospects in Nigeria and what Nigerian leaders are doing in encouraging investors to come and make significant investments here. We can bring our knowledge and expertise to bear in Nigeria’s economy.”

Giving a brief background of the company, Mr. Wesley Batista disclosed that it started in 1953 with slaughtering one cow per day and grew to 600 heads of cattle in one beef plant per day in 1957, becoming the largest beef player in Brazil in the 1990s.

“In the beginning of 2000, we started looking for opportunities to go beyond Brazil, and in 2005, we started in Argentina, and in 2007, we went to the United States and Australia. JBS is our biggest business under our holding company,” he added.

Batista said the organization currently has a revenue of about $75bn and 280,000 direct members who operate hundreds of facilities across Brazil, the USA, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France, among others.

According to the Controlling Shareholder, the company processes 80,000 heads of cattle, 15 million chickens, about 25,000 heads of lamb per day, and also produces packaged products like sausages and bacon, while they also hold interests in other sectors like energy, the paper-producing industry, banking and finance, as well as soap and toiletries.

Giving a brief about the State titled “Unlocking the Future of Livestock Processing and Other Opportunities,” Governor Abiodun said the state, with more than 16,000 square kilometers, offers an ideal location for investments as it provides unique connections to the 17 southern states as well as the northern parts of the country.

“We have provided, in terms of infrastructure, 1,000 kilometers of highways and the best-constructed airport in Nigeria, specially dedicated to agro imports and exports.

“We are number one in non-oil, as two-thirds of the state sits on limestone. Our state is the third-largest producer of cement in Africa, trailing behind Morocco, which is second, and Egypt, which is first.

“The State also has gold, silica, bitumen, and others which are too numerous to mention. We have gas reticulation more than any other state. There are two major gas pipelines that crisscross our state,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun is going into power generation and distribution, assuring that industries and companies that operate in the State would have access to the cheapest power supply in the country.

On the acquisition of land, the governor said it has been made seamless as land title documents would be made ready within 30 days, assuring that his administration has invested significantly in security to guarantee the safety of lives and properties of those who live and work in the State.

While assuring that his administration would collaborate with the government of President Bola Tinubu to ensure food sufficiency and security, Governor Abiodun said efforts would be made to reduce food scarcity and inflation in the State and country.

He lauded the company for rising from humble beginnings to become the largest protein producer in the world, saying his administration is looking forward to seeing the company establish itself in the State.

The leader of the delegation, John Coumantaros, in his remarks, applauded the governor for opening up the State in the area of infrastructure, which he noted has pushed up investments and brought more development to the State.

He said President Tinubu’s administration has set forth on changing the macro conditions of the country where everything works properly by embarking on the development of infrastructure corridors from East to West and North to South, adding that the JBS group was in the State to assess its viability for investment.

“Tinubu has made it possible to attract investors like this, and Governor Abiodun is here to make the program possible because protein is critical for the growth of Nigeria, building modern slaughterhouses, establishing piggery and poultry farms, and going back to see how we can produce maize and soya beans of good yields and its value chain from farm to customers, making the ecosystem beneficial to the growth of the country and the entire Gross Domestic Product,” he noted.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Aisha Rimi, on her part, said the meeting is a follow-up to the technical team sent by the company to assess the potentials of the State for investment, adding that the company is ready to invest $2.5bn in the next five years in livestock, and Ogun State would be one of the States to benefit.
