  • Succession battle in Ogun

    Succession battle in Ogun

    • By Bolaji Adeniji

With the 2027electoral cycle beckoning, Ogun State will approach a pivotal moment in its political evolution as the politics of succession kicks in for the All Progressives Congress (APC) particularly.

The incumbent governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, is winding down his tenure and the conversation on who will succeed him continues to dominate public discuss in the gateway state.

For the ruling APC, the party inescapably faces a defining choice – to field a candidate who understands the pulse of the people and whom the people have a plausible impression of, someone who has consistently delivered results and who unquestionably possess the amalgam of requirements to ensure electoral conquest for the party.

The effort to ensure that the party steamrolls the opposition to a comfortable victory at the polls, has become a movement. It is a movement rooted in equity, performance and the undeniable will of the people to push meritocracy to the front burner of the inevitable dialogue that must guide the party in making the ultimate verdict of its flag-bearer.

Decisions have consequences; so do candidates have significant imports on success for any political party at the ballot.

The existential need for the APC in Ogun State to get it right stems from the hindsight of the 2023 elections, where the party won, but not a victory that was emphatic. The result could also have been otherwise if the numbers to ramp up the needed margins did not come in to give it the winning edge.

Looking ahead to 2027, the All Progressives Congress, notwithstanding the unapparent schism within it and the rambunctious contestation amongst the supporters of the prospective gubernatorial hopefuls, the party must make a choice that will define the future of Ogun State.

Spurred by its performance the last time out, the main opposition, just like a famished lion, is smelling blood, and without an incumbent standing for re-election, it will fancy the chances for an upset; and there comes the need for the ruling party to be pragmatic and forthright in its recruitment process.

Without equivocation or the figurative depiction of an attempt to ‘cut one’s nose in order to spite the face’, the rational choice before the APC is clear and that choice is the lawmaker currently representing Ogun West at the upper chamber of the national assembly, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, fondly called YAYI.

YAYI is not just a name or political sobriquet; it has become a phenomenon, a legacy of service. With the unprecedented and progressive representation in Ogun West, he has demonstrated what people-focused leadership looks like.

For decades, Ogun West, being a part of a whole, waited with bated breath for a chance to lead; an opportunity to prove that something good can happen to Ogun State through the hands of a Westerner. With YAYI, that wait is ending and a new dawn of shinning possibilities is unraveling before our eyes.

Ogun West is not just the beneficiary of the doings of YAYI, many parts of Ogun State are smiling and giggling at the dividends of democracy practically being delivered to their doorsteps and complementing the laudable efforts of the state executive.

Instructively, YAYI’s inexorable march to the Okemosan seat of power is not just a political ambition — it is a moral correction, a statement that every region and citizen matter when it come to the dispensation of political power.

And let us be clear, YAYI is not only delivering as a proud son of Ogun State, he is the quintessential servant-leader and he is ready. Despite the noise and distractions, notwithstanding the freezing chill around the opposition at his ascendancy, regardless of the tantrums thrown at YAYI to slow him down, his support base continues to grow stronger across the state spontaneously.

In Ogun today, the people know the truth. They know that YAYI is the bridge between performance and promise, he is the link between grassroots and governance, he is the differential between fallacy and reality, and he epitomizes the virtues of vision, diligence, commitment and excellence in public service.

Essentially, he has evolved to become a signpost of the second generation of Nigeria’s transformational leaders, after the likes of the Awolowos, Azikiwes and Amadu-Bellos.

As Governor Dapo Abiodun tails his second term, the question echoes: Who will carry the torch forward? Who will build on the foundation laid by Abiodun? Who will unite the party and the people? Just like biblical David did, who will lead the battle against the political philistines in the opposition? Who combines a pedigree of service and the burning compassion for the welfare of the majority?

Who is that man that has become the fulcrum for progressive forces across state today? Who is that person who stands tall as a totem of everything good about democracy? Who is that one person that possesses the structure and entirety of utilities that makes for electoral victory? The answer is not farfetched; as the groundswell of opinion in Ogun APC today and the word on the street say it is Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola – YAYI.

Without prevarication and hiding under a mask, YAYI is incontestably the best bet to carry aloft the gubernatorial banner of Ogun APC come 2027.

Additionally, he is the best man to lead Ogun State to the next phase of its socioeconomic renaissance. Why is this writer saying so? YAYI’s political journey is a thesis in effective governance, combining stellar legislative credentials while simultaneously excelling in initiatives that are core executive prerogatives – an inspirational departure from the normative, one which sets the senator apart as a rare breed. In a fashion that is unmistaken in over 22 years of service, he has brought unprecedented development to Ogun West.

Landmark infrastructural projects now dot the district, humongous empowerment programmes targeted at youths, women and artisans, has created a ripple effect of economic growth for the people. His interventions in human capital development (education and healthcare) have restored the dignity of the citizenry.

The countless spectacles of YAYI again transcend the western district, permeating all over Ogun State and bringing succour to the deprived of the society. Be it be roads, markets, schools, hospitals, transformers, solar lights, empowerment tools for artisans, entrepreneurial support to MSMEs and scholarships to students, the effects of these provisions have spiralled a value-chain that is closing the developmental gap in Ogun West and contributively addressing the inequalities in the larger Ogun State context.

The good works of YAYI has made him become the topic of discussion around the state. Both his admirers and traducers have a common denominator – the name YAYI.

Undeniably, Senator Adeola’s shinning performance is at the vortex of the people’s yearnings and aspirations. Will the APC not rally round such a man whose humanity is daily weaving webs of succour and connecting dots of hope all over the state?

Another striking feature of YAYI is that he has emerged as the consummate symbol of equity and inclusion. Ogun West, despite its rich contributions to the state, has never produced a governor in almost 50 years of creation.

The agitation is perennial and the noise is loudest this time around. The aggregate of opinion in Ogun State today is already conceding – genuinely and more than ever before – to the impending reality of a governor of Ogun West origin. But wait for it, the evolving movement is beyond an ogun west agitation.

The current optimism and mutating pan-ogun movement is spurred by only one man, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who is paternally Yewa and maternally Egba.

Statistics obtained from the report of a recent survey done by the Forum for Governance, Leadership and Values (FGLV), indicate that 93% of the various publics in Ogun West (Traditional institution, youths, women, students, artisans, intellectuals, community leaders, CDAs and the political class) have built a consensus on YAYI as the man on whose shoulder, their cry for emancipation will become a reality.

Observers say that YAYI’s candidacy offers a chance to correct any historical imbalance and foster equity.

They say he is a unifying figure whose popularity cuts across all three senatorial districts and that he is leader whose rise to statewide prominence and support is rooted in gratitude – and not political coercion.

They cited, among other inferences, the recent birthday of the senator, when on 10th August 2023, the three senatorial districts of the state lavishly celebrated him simultaneously – a signal so profound and significant – that YAYI is a brand that has received ownership by every part of the state.

The prognosis herein is that, the APC and indeed Ogun people have been presented with the golden chance to resolve the knotty marginalization question while securing a transformational leader that will regenerate its fortunes to higher pedestals. Succinctly put, YAYI is the intersection of both the centrifugal and centripetal political interests in Ogun State today and the APC cannot afford to miss this blank cheque to electoral success in 2027!

Many have argued it; some deny the truth but many admit it that YAYI is APC’s best bet for continuity and growth. Political pundits believe that Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator Solomon Adeola built a relationship that have been mutually beneficial and has worked well for the party since 2019 in terms of electoral success and delivery of democratic dividends to the people. In the school of strategy, it is commonplace saying that ‘you disrupt a winning system’.

YAYI embodies the blend of experience, vision and grassroots connection that Ogun State needs. For the APC, endorsing him is not just a strategic move – it is an ethical imperative to recognize capacity, promote equity and concede to the will of the majority within the party and the general public that have already decided on YAYI and are daily asking for his leadership with a defiant resolve.

Consequently, it must be in the enlightened self-interest of the governor to succeed where his predecessors failed, that is, to bequeath a successor; and in YAYI, that objective becomes assured and the pathway seamless.

What more, YAYI is fortuitously positioned to sustain the developmental strides of the current administration while expanding them to underserved regions as exemplified by the way he has gone about the siting of his projects and distribution of empowerments.

He is unarguably the only gubernatorial hopeful who commands respect across all party lines, can mobilize grassroots support in every ward of the state as at today and can reinforce the party’s dominance through displayable result and not just mouthed loyalty.

Additionally, YAYI is a man who God has helped to be self-sufficient by committing to his hands, five fundamental features that makes him an indispensable choice for 2027; and these are – Competence, Structure, Relationships, Resources and Electoral Recall.

All over Ogun State today, the song is: “YAYI we know and YAYI we want”. Thus, the APC only need to make its work lighter by leveraging on a man who has already done all the hard work of ingratiating himself and his party to the heart of the people.

Tinubu’s aide launches anti-child abuse campaign, workshops in Ogun

In a bid to combat child abuse and related vices, friends and supporters of Alhaji Yusuf Kamorudeen, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under the banner of Kamosky loyalists, have begun a series of workshops and sensitisation programmes for teenagers, teachers, and caregivers.

One of the workshops took place on Monday in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, featuring experts in child psychology, behavioural change communication, and faith-based leaders, who shared practical insights on curbing child abuse.

Lead speaker, Princess Feyikemi Banuso, highlighted the various forms of abuse, including bullying, blackmail, and inappropriate touching, urging teenagers to always speak out when confronted with such threats.

According to her, “Around here victims of child abuse, molestation including rape face stigma and shame hence many suffer in silence. But we are saying that such a culture of silence would not help the situation but rather would aggravate things. This is why we are carrying out this sensitisation and awareness programme to educate our boy and girl child.

“All we are saying is that you must not tolerate abuse of any kind both from strangers and even from people close to you. You must learn to always speak out because if you don’t speak out you are indirectly empowering your abusers. So you must learn to speak out,” she stressed.

‎Other speakers also gave career pep talks thus encouraging the teenagers to aspire to become responsible citizens and prepare to contribute their own quota to the development of the society.

The highpoint of the occasion was the donation of stationery to participants at the palace of the Olota of Ota, Oba Professor Adeyemi Abdulkabir Obalanlege.

Customs smashes smuggling ring, seized 15 assorted rifles, industrial drones in Ogun, Ondo

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ , Ikeja, has smashed a transborder smuggling ring that specialised in smuggling firearms, ammunition, and industrial drones into the country.

The gang, which smuggles industrial drones, arms and ammunition using wooden box and Danu Spaghetti as decoys was ambushed by Customs officials in Ogun and Ondo States.

Addressing reporters in Lagos on Tuesday, the Controller of the Unit, Mohammed Shuaibu disclosed that two industrial drones, arms and ammunition were intercepted by officers and ment of the Unit along the bush paths near the border in Ogun State and Akure- Ore axis in Ondo state.

According to him, “On Thursday, 7th August 2025, at approximately 0213hrs, one of our patrol teams, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a Nissan Almera vehicle suspected of conveying prohibited items via the Ilara bush paths near the border in Ogun State. Upon sighting our officers, the driver and one passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush to evade arrest.”

After a thorough search of the intercepted vehicle, he said, “revealed the following items, carefully concealed within second-hand clothing and cartons of spaghetti: 14 used JOJEF Magnum semi-automatic firearms (designed in Italy) with the following serial numbers: 22-0743, 602-H22YT-556

    602-H22YT-700, 698-H21PT-24 (Pump Action) 602-H22YT-586, 602-H22YT-551

    602-H22YT-566, 19KS-0193, 602-H22YT-415 22-1809, 22-1466, 602-H22YT-642

    602-H22YT-583 and 602-H22YT-572.

Officers of the Unit, Shuaibu added, “also intercepted one used Mossberg pump action shotgun (Made in USA) Serial No. P256630.

A total: 15 assorted rifles, 4,841 rounds of ammunition, two cartons of Danu Spaghetti (20 pieces per carton), two bales and one sack of used clothing that were used as decoys.

Another patrol team, he said, “Made a separate interception of a Volkswagen sprinter bus suspected to convey drones in a wooden box along the Akure- Ore axis in Ondo state while on a routine patrol. The arrest occurred at about 0910hrs of 9th August 2025.”

Further investigation of the bus, Shuaibu said, “Confirms the drones to be industrial drones without proper documents. One suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure. The drones, second-hand clothing, and cartons of spaghetti have a duty paid value (DPV) of N377, 110,800.00.”

The interception of these security threatening items, Shuaibu added, “underscores the unwavering commitment of the Service under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to disrupt the activities of non-state actors and safeguard national security. These efforts reflect the Service’s dedication to combating smuggling and criminality at our borders while restoring law and order.”

The Controller reiterate that the importation of arms, ammunition, or drones of this nature requires valid approval, permits, and an End User Certificate from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Any deviation from these regulatory requirements, he said, will be treated as a deliberate attempt to undermine national security and will be met with swift and decisive action by all relevant security agencies, including the NCS.

“These kinds of seizures are not achieved without serious planning, intelligence gathering, and tactical execution. I therefore commend the bravery, professionalism, and commitment of our officers, whose efforts made this successful interception possible. The unit remains resolute and vigilant in its mission to suppress smuggling to the barest minimum.

“At a time when our nation faces complex security challenges, it is imperative that all stakeholders remain aligned in our collective efforts to prevent these non-state actors from achieving their criminal objectives. I, therefore, call on all well-meaning Nigerians to report suspicious movements or activities within their communities. Your vigilance is critical to enabling law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties effectively.

He promised, “The intercepted arms and ammunition will be handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

Ogun extends deadline for presentation of property documents by two weeks

Ogun State Government has extended the deadline for property owners/occupiers affected by the ongoing audit exercises to submit their title documents by two weeks.

‘’This extension is aimed at giving property owners and developers more time to either present their planning permits or approach the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and its agencies to regularise their unapproved developments.

‘’This extension demonstrates the goodwill of the state government in response to representations made by a cross-section of the affected property owners in Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode and reflects its commitment to the rule of law and transparency.’’

The government said ‘’this magnanimity does not derogate whatsoever from its constitutional and statutory actions already carried out on the matter.’’

It reiterated that the physical development audit exercise currently taking place in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode and elsewhere across the state was not a witch hunt of any individual or organisation, but a continuous effort towards ensuring sustainable urban development across the state.

  • Ogun, Daniel row over alleged contravention of building laws deepens

Ogun, Daniel row over alleged contravention of building laws deepens

The row between the Ogun State Government and former Governor Senator Gbenga Daniel over alleged contravention of building regulations by the latter took a new dimension on Monday.

Daniel charged the Dapo Abiodun – led administration has no moral right to paste notices on properties if the same has not pasted on the Governor’s private residence in Iperu, Abiodun’s home town.

‎But the State Government said the laws were flr public good and not to victimise anybody, adding the physical planning law and regulations are enforceable at any time and for all time, on all developments in the state including developments that preceded the law.

‎However, Daniel said the Abiodun’s private residence in Iperu faces Iperu – Ode Remo road without any setback, wondering why the same notices had not been pasted on it if Ogun State Government had no “ulterior motive” in targeting him and his properties.

‎The former Governor recalled that the Aseludero Court Hall, Sagamu, was where he raised Abiodun’s hands in the build up to the 2019 governorship election, wondering how the property had just contravene building regulations six years after Abiodun came to power.

‎He spoke on Monday at the Aseludero Hall within his Aseludero Court private residence, Sagamu through Mr Steve Oliyide of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Media Office while briefing newsmen with former Commissioners in attendance, Including Akogun Kola Onadipe, a building specialist.

‎Reaffirming that Dapo Abiodun is “persecuting” him “politically,” he declared that his “political fate in 2027” – apparently referring to his re-election ambition, does not rest on the Governor but his people whom, he stressed, have been supporting his political career since 2003.

‎Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the 10th National Assembly, warned the ongoing political persecution by Abiodun under the guise of building contravention, could plunge the state into “chaos” if not properly guided.

‎”Does his house in Iperu facing Iperu – Ode – Isara road has approved setback? That house should be demolished. If the administration had not pasted any notice of contravention on his property, it does not have moral right to demolish any property in the state,” the Senator declared.

‎But speaking through the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Tunji Odunlami, the Government stated that the goal of physical planning laws and regulations is to aid urban development and control land use in the public interest.

Clarifying this on Monday at a briefing at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Commissioner stated that the exercises were aimed at verifying the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings.

The owners of such properties, Odunlami noted, were served due notices to approach the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, an agency of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, to present relevant documents in conformity with existing building laws and regulations.

“It is pertinent to note that this is a daily routine and ongoing activity of this agency and is devoid of witch-hunting, and therefore not designed to harm the interests of any individual.

“It is a simple and transparent approach that is known and adopted worldwide, including in most states in Nigeria. What we are currently doing is no exception.

“This exercise has been done in Abeokuta and is now extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, where there is no fuss except this one. It is also going to be carried out in Ota and Ilaro, where we also have GRAs,” he said.

The commissioner emphasised that the owner of any building served with the notice only needs to approach the office that issued the notice and present their permit and other documents for verification.

“As we speak, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has yet to do so or make any representation to that effect.

“That is why whenever OGSG issues enforcement notices, genuine developers respond through the proper channels by justifying their developments or seeking plan adjustments and ratifications,” Odunlami stated.

Highlighting the content of the law, the commissioner said: “Section 73 of the State’s Physical Planning Law provides that an enforcement notice may be issued under subsection (I) of this Section, notwithstanding that the unauthorized development, renovation, alteration, repair, addition, or violation took place before the commencement of this Law.”

  • Ogun, Arise IIP Unveil $2 bn World’s Largest Garment Factory

Ogun, Arise IIP Unveil $2 bn World’s Largest Garment Factory

IN a bold and strategic leap toward industrial revitalization, the Ogun State Government, in groundbreaking partnership with Arise Integrated Industrial Platform (IIP), an Indian-headquartered multinational, has announced plans to establish the world’s largest garment manufacturing facility in the state

With a financial outlay of between $2 billion and $2.25 billion, this transformational initiative is poised to alter the landscape of Nigeria’s textile sector, resuscitate cotton farming, and place Ogun at the center of Africa’s industrial map.

Sited within the Special Agro Processing Zone at Ogun Airport City, the factory’s development will commence with a landmark groundbreaking ceremony slated for September 2025.

Steering the implementation is a Joint Project Implementation Team comprising both state and Arise IIP representatives, charged with managing timelines, pre-groundbreaking logistics, and stakeholder coordination across critical sectors such as agriculture, industry, and regulation.

Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, hosting a delegation from Arise IIP and AFRIXEM Bank at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, expressed profound optimism regarding the impact and scope of the project.

He described it as a game-changing development with the capacity to produce up to 1,000 tons of garments daily and directly employ between 120,000 and 150,000 individuals.

The ripple effects, the governor noted, will be felt across Nigeria’s economy, from increased agricultural demand to export expansion.

At the heart of the initiative lies a commitment to backward integration—particularly into cotton farming.

The Governor revealed that 10,000 hectares of farmland have already been allocated to cotton cultivation in Ogun State, and a strong growers’ association is in place to support sustainable production.

Arise IIP will supply high-quality cotton inputs, and local farmers will serve as outgrowers under secure offtake arrangements, ensuring not only consistent supply but also stable pricing and guaranteed market access.

The employment potential of the factory is immense. Beyond the over 120,000 direct jobs, the project will indirectly create over 300,000 roles in logistics, warehousing, transportation, trade, and allied services. Governor Abiodun remarked on the revitalization of Nigeria’s cotton farming culture and the catalytic effect this will have on the agricultural economy. Ogun State, he added, boasts some of the best-quality cotton in the country, a factor that further enhances the viability of the garment operation.

Proximity to critical infrastructure—including seaports, airports, and energy corridors—was a key factor in Arise IIP’s choice of Ogun. Mr. Gagan Gupta, President of Arise IIP, affirmed the strategic logic behind the location, praising the enabling environment and hands-on facilitation provided by the Ogun State Government. He described Nigeria as being fully equipped to become Africa’s textile hub and emphasized Arise IIP’s commitment to actualizing this vision through its partnership with Ogun.

Corroborating this view, Mr. Raja Rajaburu, CEO of ATMS, reiterated the group’s readiness to commit the entire investment value to the project, noting that the infrastructure and investment climate created by Governor Abiodun’s administration had made Ogun the natural home for such a vast undertaking. Mr. Arvind Mathor, CEO of Textiles at Arise IIP, projected that the garments produced would not only meet domestic consumption needs but also be competitively exported across ECOWAS countries, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves.

Though the Ogun State Government leads this partnership, the role of the Federal Government has been instrumental in creating an enabling macroeconomic and policy environment. The Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), the National Cotton, Textile and Garment (CTG) Policy, and export incentives have collectively laid the groundwork for investor confidence. The presence and support of institutions like AFRIXEM Bank, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission further demonstrate critical federal-level coordination.

Governor Abiodun specifically commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the policy stability and investor-friendly climate necessary to attract a multibillion-dollar investment of this magnitude. He emphasized that it was the president’s broader economic vision that had made Ogun—and by extension, Nigeria—a destination of choice for major global investors.

The socio-economic implications of this project for Ogun State are extensive. It will drastically reduce unemployment, energize the agricultural economy, boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and serve as a springboard for foreign direct investment (FDI) and technology transfer. Youth empowerment and skill acquisition will be integrated into the factory’s operations, ensuring long-term benefits for the next generation of Ogun indigenes.

Beyond immediate job creation and production output, the garment factory symbolizes a shift toward sustainable industrial development. It reflects the government’s commitment to economic diversification, rural development, and strengthening of Nigeria’s non-oil export base. As such, it represents a vital component in the country’s broader drive for industrial self-sufficiency and global competitiveness.

The alliance between Ogun State and Arise IIP, underpinned by federal policy support and international financing, sets a new benchmark for public-private partnerships in Nigeria. It signals not just the rebirth of the textile industry, but the emergence of Ogun State as a continental leader in industrial innovation and inclusive economic growth. With vision, collaboration, and leadership, Ogun is poised to weave the fabric of Africa’s future—one garment at a time.

The summit is also aimed at examining in all ramifications, the factors and circumstances which directly, indirectly or remotely, contributed to the inability of candidates of Yewa extraction to clinch the coveted office of the governor of Ogun State since the creation of the state in 1976.

The forum will also agree on a Pan-Yewa agenda to be subscribed to by Yewa sons and daughters aspiring to high political offices.

It will also set up modality for strategic discussion on harnessing and harmonising interests on the political landscape in Yewaland.

Dr. Bamgbose said: “The committee will determine and invite the delegates that will discuss the role effective political leadership can play in addressing the challenge, share experience on how to develop the requisite political harmony that can lead Yewaland to take her rightful position, and reflect on how to build the critical political understanding among players necessary for sustainable political opportunities.

“The committee will also chart the way forward towards implementing the output of such a summit.”

He noted that the YPDC would work together with the Yewa Traditional Council in its activities.

“As such, the roles and interface of YTC members in the drive of Yewaland must be a focus of the summit as well,” Dr. Bamgbose said in an interview.

  • Council for Ifa Religion to sue Ogun, Awujale’s family over alleged violation of burial rites

Council for Ifa Religion to sue Ogun, Awujale’s family over alleged violation of burial rites

The International Council For Ifa Religion (ICIR) has threatened legal action against Ogun State Government and family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, for allegedly violating the legal and laid down traditional rites of burying a traditional rulers in the State.

ICIR vowed to correct what it described as anomaly and a departure from the laid down traditional practice of Yoruba tribe in giving the last respect and rites to the deceased king.

The monarch, who joined his ancestors on Sunday, July,,.13 2025 at 91, was said to have buried according to Islamic rites.

Speaking at a briefing in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, President of ICIR, Dr. Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode referred to the last judicial pronouncement over the matter when the late Awujale was alive, which upheld the burial of traditional rulers according to the customs and traditions of the Yoruba people as against that of foreign religions like Islam and Christianity.

While commending the Osugbo Confraternity saddled with the responsibility of performing the final rites on any dead Awujale for their peaceful conduct after been prevented from doing their traditional duties, the ICIR President said the action of the State, by enforcing an Islamic burial rites for Oba Adetona contravened part 8, section 55, sub-section ¡¡ of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law.

He said: “Following the recent controversy surrounding the burial rites of Oba Awujale of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, we at the International Council For Ifa Religion-ICIR commend the Osugbo Confraternity of Ijebu-Ode for their exemplary restraint and patience in the face of adversity. That is infact a virtue that aligns with the noble teachings of Òrúnmìlà.

“This poignant moment reminds us that the gentleness of a lion is not a sign of weakness, but rather a testament to its wisdom and strength, as embodied in the proverb ‘Yíyọ́ ẹkùn; tojo kọ́’.

“Regarding the burial rites of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, it is essential to recall that the matter was settled while the late kabiesi was still alive, by a court of law and with the new bill passed in the state.

“Any actions contrary to this judgment and the laws of the land would be a disregard for the customs and traditions that have been the cornerstone of our heritage, there is no doubt that the burial was not in consonance with the law of the State and It is obvious that the burial arrangement contravened Part 8, Section 55, Sub-section ii of the Ogun State Chieftaincy law.

“This issue transcends a mere burial rite; it represents a challenge to the very fabric of our customs and traditions, the actions taken at the event were part of a larger agenda to erode the cultural practices that have defined us for generations and strategic plan towards annihilation of our race by invaders who mischievously naturalized and whose offsprings are now pursuing their fathers’ agenda.

“We urge the sons and daughters of Ijebu-Ode and the entire Yoruba race to recognize that the institution of Obaship is not only a sacred tradition but also a choice that demands respect for our cultural heritage. We must acknowledge that our diversity is our strength and that our differences are what make our culture so rich and vibrant.

“We condemn the disrespect shown to the Osugbo Confraternity during the event  by the family of the late Oba, the Government officials and the security agencies concerned, furthermore, to prevent such occurrence in the future, we will take necessary legal actions.”

Legal representative of ICIR, Barr. Opeodu noted that the actions of the family of the late Ijebu-Ode monarch, the government of Ogun State and various law enforcement agencies constituted threat to the growth of democracy and an infringement on the fundamental rights of the traditional believer.

He said: “In consonance, the actions of the family of the late Ijebu Ode monarch, government of Ogun State, and the various law enforcement agencies in Ogun State, constitute threat to the growth of democracy, infringement on the fundamental rights of the traditional believers to their own beliefs, an aberration to the extant law regarding the installation and burial of Obas and Chiefs and a State of anarchy.

“The Islamic clergies as led by the Chief Imam of Ijebu-Ode violated the law of the land and as a result, demonstrated the lawlessness character and nature of their religion.

“The traditional institution being a lawful institution is guided by law, unlike Islamic religion. The traditionalists will take an appropriate action under the law to seek remedy.”
