Ogun communities celebrate access to clean water

Ten communities across Obafemi-Owode and Ota local government areas of Ogun State now have access to clean water, thanks to a joint initiative by HACEY and Access Bank.

The newly-inaugurated boreholes, handed over at a colourful ceremony attended by community leaders, local government officials and representatives from both organisations, mark a significant milestone in the “Access to Clean Water Project” — a programme aimed at tackling water scarcity in underserved Nigerian communities.

Benefiting areas include Arigbawonwo, Omu Arogun, Omu Ajibode, Omu Isoku, Omu Aleku, Abaren, Okeeran, Kemta, Afojupa and Ogunruneletu — all of which have long struggled with inadequate access to potable water.

The situation had not only affected health, but also placed a heavy burden on women and children, who often travelled long distances to fetch water from unsafe sources.

“HACEY and Access Bank have not just given us boreholes; they have given us life,” said Chief Bankole Taofeek Idowu, Baale of Ogunruneletu.

They spoke on behalf of the communities.

“They have given our children the chance to spend more time in school, our women more time for productive activities, and our entire communities better health and dignity.”

Programme Manager at HACEY, Bamidele Oyewunmi, described clean water as a “fundamental human right” and underscored the group’s commitment to sustainable development.

“We are proud to partner with Access Bank to bring this essential resource to these deserving communities,” he said.

For Access Bank, the project ties into its broader sustainability goals.

Adeniyi Ajagunna, who represented the bank at the event, noted that the intervention was part of ongoing efforts to improve lives and promote well-being in host communities.

Community leaders echoed similar sentiments, with many expressing gratitude for what they called a “timely and transformative” intervention.

Residents say beyond immediate relief, the project has paved the way for better sanitation, improved hygiene and enhanced public health.

The Access to Clean Water Project is part of HACEY’s wider strategy to empower underserved population through infrastructure that promotes long-term well-being.

With this latest achievement, the organisation says it remains committed to expanding the reach of clean water access across Nigeria.

Ogun secures conviction of three ritual killers

The Ogun State Ministry of Justice has secured the conviction of three ritual killers in the Kugba axis of Abeokuta, the state capital.

A staty by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the State, Mr. Oluwasina  Ogungbade SAN, identified the convicts as Mustakeem Balogun, Soliudeen Majekodunmi and Lukmon Abdulgafar.

The three are to face the full wrath of the law owing to their gruesome act of killing a teenager, Sofia Okeowo, for ritual purposes.

The government noted that the conviction would curtail, if not completely eradicate, the unwholesome practice of human ritualism in the state.

The dastardly act of the convicts which occurred on January 28th 2022, saw Mustakeem Balogun lured 16 year old Sofia to have canal knowledge of her and later strangled her in  preparatory for a premeditated money ritual.

The Commissioner further stated the current administration’s  determination  not give any room for crime to thrive, promoted the state efforts towards securing the conviction of the three criminals, so as to serve as deterrent to other ritualists

Mustakeem Balogun and Soliudeen Majekodunmi were sentenced to death by hanging, while Lukmon Abdulgafar received a life sentence.

FG donates 3,500 life jackets to Ogun to boost waterways safety

As part of efforts to enhance safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, the federal government has donated 3,500 life jackets to the Ogun State Government for use by waterways operators across the state.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made the donation on behalf of the federal government on Monday, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to ending preventable deaths on waterways. He was represented at the event by the Director of Maritime Services in the Ministry, Dr. Mercy Ilori.

Oyetola said the initiative is part of a national strategy to instil a culture of safety and reduce boat mishaps nationwide. “This is one of the most comprehensive federal responses to the persistent loss of lives on Nigeria’s waterways,” he said.

The Minister noted that similar distributions had taken place in Niger, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Taraba, and Lagos States. “We are now in Ogun State to sustain the momentum and demonstrate the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and livelihoods,” he added.

He described the rising frequency of boat accidents as a national concern and said the Ministry has aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to tackle the menace.

The strategy, he said, rests on three key pillars: strict enforcement of the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations 2023; continuous public education and sensitisation; and the provision of critical safety equipment such as life jackets.

He acknowledged the vital role of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in implementing this strategy, particularly in regulating and monitoring water transport activities.

Receiving the items, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, assured that the life jackets would be fairly distributed to registered waterways operators across the state.

Dairo emphasised that safety on waterways is not a privilege but a fundamental right of every resident, and pledged the state’s continued support for enhancing water transport as a viable and secure alternative to road travel.

“Safety on the waterways is not a privilege, it is a right. Every life jacket handed over today represents a life potentially saved, a family preserved, and a future secured. This initiative aligns with the human capital development pillar of our administration’s ISEYA agenda, ensuring that people remain at the heart of our progress

“Ogun State values the synergy we have fostered with the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and applauds their dedication to the development of marine infrastructure, safety standards, and the blue economy as a whole. Ogun State stands ready and willing to provide all the necessary support to sustain this momentum, not only in marine safety but also in enhancing inland waterways as viable and secure alternatives to road transport.”

“To our waterway users, boat operators, fishermen, and residents of our riverine communities: these life jackets are for you. But more importantly, the knowledge and awareness you will gain from this sensitisation effort will serve as your daily companion, protecting you and helping you protect others.

“Ogun State hereby assures the Federal Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy and NIWA that these life jackets will be equitably distributed to verified and recognised operators across the state’s waterways, from Iwopin to Ebute-Ero, from Agbara to Tongeji, Imakun Omi to Ode-Omi, and other active riverine corridors. A strict monitoring and maintenance protocol will be enforced to ensure sustainability and accountability.”

The state governor, however, warned that State actors would not allow preventable tragedies to define the nation’s way of war.

“As we continue to embrace innovation and development in transportation, we must also embrace accountability and responsibility. Let us not allow preventable tragedies to define our way of life, let us instead champion the principles of safety, respect for life, and collective vigilance.”

However, the Managing Director of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, warned that the issue of safety on the inland waterways cannot be overemphasised, as he recounted several tragic incidents that claimed lives in hundreds.

“The issue of safety can never be over-emphasised. On June 12, 2023, a wooden boat carrying wedding guests returning from a marriage ceremony from Niger State capsized in Jeva Channel Lake, in River Niger in Kwara State, owing to overloading and a submerged tree.

“The boat was reported to be carrying over 200 guests despite having the capacity of carrying just less than 100 passengers. More than 200 lives were lost, among which a father and four of his children were involved. So you can imagine the kind of tragedy that befell the family.

“Again, in October 1, 2024, a wooden boat carrying mostly women and children traveling for religious festive occasions capsized in Niger State. The boat was reported to be carrying over 300 passengers, even though it has the capacity of carrying less than 100 passengers. More than 100 lives were lost.”

The NIWA Managing Director, who was represented by Engr. Elsie Egwuatu observed that in the respective cases, the boats were heavily overloaded, sailed at night without the proper navigational aids and conveyed passengers without life jackets.

“So if you think safety is expensive, try disaster. Over 90 percent of accidents that happen on our waterways are caused by human error. In most cases, it is caused by the captain’s negligence. The newly gazetted Marine and Transport Regulations Codes, which spell out offences and punishments, ranging from a fine to imprisonment, mandate the compulsory use of life jackets for all waterways users sailing on our waterways,” she added.

Also speaking, the National President of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON), Alhaji Tarzan Balogun, called for intensified regulatory efforts to prioritise safety and infrastructural development on Nigerian waterways.

Alhaji Balogun commended the government for its efforts in promoting safety across the country’s inland waterways, even as he assured that the life jackets would be used judiciously.

“There must be a firm policy: no life jacket, no entry. I’ve witnessed several cases where passengers refuse to wear them. That should not be allowed. Safety must come first,” he said.

Balogun also praised the federal government, particularly President Tinubu and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, for their commitment to maritime safety and for recognising the importance of life-saving gear in water transport.

“If you’re drunk or perceived to be a threat to others onboard, operators must have the authority to refuse you entry. There is also the problem of bringing animals onboard, especially dogs, who can scare passengers onboard and make boats capsize,” he stated.

Balogun also called on the Ogun State Government to emulate Lagos by setting up a dedicated waterways authority and constructing jetties in collaboration with local boat operators.

Ogun reiterates commitment to monarchs’ burial rites

Ogun State government is committed to upholding the lawful cultural practices in burial rites for traditional rulers.

The government, in a statement yesterday, noted that inasmuch as traditional rulers are expected to abide by their traditions, there are limitations to such conformity according to the laws of the state.

The government was responding to a lecture by Justice P. O. Akinside of the Customary Court of Appeal, Ogun State, who noted that monarchs were bound to submit to the burial rites of the traditional institution.

The statement noted that Justice Akinside’s submission was his opinion and not a judicial pronouncement as erroneously reported by some media forums and misrepresented by the public.

Noting that monarchs are the custodians of their traditions, the government said. “Specifically, Section 55 of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2021 provides a framework for the preservation and regulation of traditional burial rites for traditional rulers. While subsection (ii) of the section acknowledges the right of a traditional ruler to be buried in accordance with customary practices, subsections (iii) to (v) establish procedural safeguards for the application of such customs.

NSF: Ogun Athletes protest over delayed allowances

Team Ogun athletes on Tuesday morning blocked the gate of Babcock University in Ilisan-Remo, where athletes at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun are housed, to protest the delayed payment of their allowances.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protest, which started in the early hours of Wednesday, prevented athletes from other states from going to compete in their various events scheduled to commence by 8am.

The protest caused traffic gridlock in and around the university community as the protesters blocked the main gate of the university, a key venue for the festival.

Some of the athletes who do not want their names mentioned told NAN that they will continue with the protest until they are paid their allowances.

NAN reports that Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun had promised to reward any athlete who won gold with ₦2.5m, ₦1.5m for silver, and ₦1m for bronze.

NAN learnt that all participating athletes for the state would receive a sum of N50,000 for qualifying.

NAN further reported that the athletes were demanding the immediate payment of their allowances, which, according to them, have been delayed by the state government.

However, after much persuasion from government officials, the protesting athletes backed down on their demands at about 1pm and opened the gate to allow vehicles to convey athletes to competition venues.

NAN reports that Team Ogun is third on the medal table with 53 gold, 44 silver and 52 bronze, totalling 149 medals.

Meanwhile, the Ogun government has condemned the protest and reaffirmed its commitment to athletes’ welfare.

The state government, in a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, described the action of athletes as regrettable.

He expressed the government’s disappointment, adding that the protest was inconsistent with the values and objectives the state upholds.

Akinmade said that the athletes acted out of impatience, as all necessary arrangements had been concluded for the payment of their allowances on Thursday.

“Abiodun remains deeply sensitive and committed to the welfare of all participants at the festival.

“There is no circumstance under which he would allow Ogun athletes to suffer or be neglected.

“The protest earlier today by a few athletes is not only unfortunate but also uncalled for.

“It stands in stark contrast to the immense success the state has recorded in hosting the festival—from the grand opening ceremony to the impressive performance of Team Ogun,” he said.

He added that payment of allowances had already commenced, with athletes receiving bank alerts as scheduled.

“Those who protested did so in error. It was a clear case of impatience,” he said.

  • Ogun arraigns monarch for land grabbing

Ogun arraigns monarch for land grabbing

Ogun State Government has arraigned the Olu of Obafemi in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Oba Taofeek Owolabi, for land grabbing.

Oba Owolabi is a coronet Oba and a member of the Egba Traditional Council. He is currently under suspension.

The government, in a statement yesterday by the Ministry of Justice, noted that the royal father was taken to court for conspiracy to sell property without authority, sale of property without authority, unlawful use of agents, forceful takeover of land, assault of a police officer and obtaining by false pretence.

According to the statement, which affirmed the monarch’s presumption of innocence, Oba Owolabi is accused of laying an unlawful claim to 500 acres of land in Obafemi Owode town and deceiving a developer, Dr. Michael Adeyemi, into paying him N75 million for the land.

The statement said, however, that Oba Owolabi never remitted the sum to the landholding families, adding that the traditional ruler also placed thugs on the land, who attacked one individual with a machete, while he personally attacked a police officer from the task force combating land grabbing in Ogun State.

The statement said Ogun State Government took steps to call Oba Owolabi to order, adding that he ignored a July 2024 summons by the House of Assembly, choosing instead to file two suits, which the Ministry of Justice defended.

The statement continued: “Oba Owolabi withdrew those cases subsequently but never submitted to the House’s investigations. The House Committee would eventually recommend that Oba Owolabi should be prosecuted for land grabbing.

“Under the leadership of the paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, the Egba Traditional Council summoned Oba Owolabi several times, but he defied those invitations.

“The Ethical Committee of the Egba Traditional Council also engaged Oba Owolabi to no avail. Thus, on December 13, 2024 the Egba Traditional Council suspended Oba Owolabi from his office as Olu Obafemi for conducting himself in a manner entirely unexpected of a traditional ruler. That suspension is still in effect.”

The statement indicated that although Oba Owolabi perfected his bail conditions, his trial remains ongoing, while Ogun State Government remains committed to seeing justice done.
