Residents raise the alarm over rising burglary, others in Ogun community

Residents of Magboro Community in Ogun State are living in fear following a surge in burglaries that have plagued their homes in recent months, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

An investigation by NAN shows growing concern and anxiety, particularly among those living in Happyland Estate, over the activities of suspected criminals.

According to residents, the burglaries appear to originate from within the community, rather than from external intruders.

The residents say they have identified a particular house where the suspected criminals reside, but feel helpless because the building is allegedly owned by a senior officer of a security agency.

Members of the Community Development Association (CDA) of Happyland Estate expressed their concerns in interviews with NAN, describing the presence of unfamiliar individuals in the area as troubling.

A resident and CDA executive, Mr Mose Mutwang, stated that the issue had escalated  between December and February, prompting the community to involve the Warewa Police Station on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“We’ve been witnessing a steady rise in burglary cases since December. By February, we escalated the matter to the Warewa Police Station.

“Following that, we convened an emergency CDA meeting to assess the situation. Our investigation led us to a house on Unity Street harboring several unidentified young men and women,” Mutwang said.

He further described the building as an unregistered hotel, raising additional concerns about its security risk to the community.

“The property does not appear to be residential in the normal sense. It is an open environment with minimal security, and the landlord doesn’t live there.

“When we visited with the CDA Chairman, we discovered the setting posed a danger to the community,” he added.

Another resident, Adekunle Sogbehin, noted the increasing presence of unfamiliar faces in the estate. He also revealed a possible case of human trafficking linked to the same house.

“One of the boys in that compound confided in us. He said he’s from Cameroon and was lured to Nigeria with promises of being taken to Europe.

“After paying a huge sum to an agent, he found himself stranded in Magboro. The boy now depends on his mother for feeding and is clearly in a helpless situation,” Sogbehin said.

He called on the government and security agencies to investigate the situation urgently.

“We’re concerned. That house reportedly houses about 30 people in a single flat, with no proper sleeping arrangements.

“We suspect human trafficking or possible recruitment for internet fraud. We need the authorities to investigate and ensure the safety of these young individuals,” he said.

Sogbehin emphasised the importance of saving both the community and the victims from criminal exploitation.

“We don’t want to be labelled a community that harbours criminals. This is beyond us now; we need outside help,” he added.

Also, CDA Chairman, Mr Bolade Awopetu echoed the community’s concerns and urged the government to intervene.

“We are appealing to the authorities to come to our aid. The house on Unity Street is a serious security risk.

“I personally visited the location, and some of the occupants admitted they felt trapped. Since they moved in, we’ve noticed a spike in criminal activity.

“For peace to reign, something must be done,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, advised the residents to formally petition the Commissioner of Police for appropriate action.

The Ogun state government will collaborate with a private sector arts and culture company, Terra Kulture, to establish a film and entertainment village in the state, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has said.

Abiodun made the disclosure when he received the Chief Executive Officer of Terra Kulture, Bolanle Austen Peters, in his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta.

The governor stated that the Ogun State Government would be more than happy to invest in the project.

“From the onset of our administration, we always wanted to have some sort of creative arts and entertainment zone, but when we assumed office, the government was laden with so many priorities. We wanted to ensure that we first paid attention to matters that touch the lives of the people directly.

“Because it is only when you are comfortable and happy that you will begin to think of relaxing and being entertained; we had to do that.

“We are confident that we have not just accomplished that; we’ve made the most of it, and our focus in the last year has been how to push the frontier in the areas of culture, music, and entertainment.

  • Ogun warns against grabbers’ activities on gov’t. land at Odogbolu LGA

Ogun warns against grabbers’ activities on gov’t. land at Odogbolu LGA

The Ogun Ministry of Justice has cautioned the public against land grabbers’ activities on government-acquired land in the Odogbolu Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade, gave the warning in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday.

The commissioner said that the ministry, having uncovered a fraudulent and improperly obtained Customary Court judgment that grabbers intended to use against unwary citizens, was impelled to issue the statement.

“A few months ago, the ministry received a petition from persons representing lineages and descendants of one Oba Alli Ogunnaike Fibiwoga (Fibiwoga Family) from Ijebu-Ode, Ogun.

“They claimed they were properly adjudged owners of a family land within Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state but were being disturbed by violent trespassers, and also presented a survey plan showing their 350-acre land,” he said.

The attorney-general further explained that the investigation on the complaint and scrutiny of the documents provided by the complainants showed that the land in question was government land.

“Two large Ogun State University properties are located on separate parts of the land, while other allottees of the state government are on other parts.

“The entirety of land claimed by the Fibiwoga Family falls within government acquisition and encroaches on the government-occupied land.

“The judgment obtained from the Customary Court was both fraudulently and improperly obtained because the complainants, who approached that court as plaintiffs, knew that the land did not belong to them.

“However, they still proceeded to obtain same, while excluding the state government, which had obvious interest in the land,” he said.

Ogungbade said none of the named defendants was served with the notice of the suit.

“Trial and judgment curiously occurred on the same day, again without notice to the named defendants.

“The judgment that Fibiwoga Family obtained never described the land awarded to them, and the plaintiffs in the case never presented a survey plan to the Customary Court,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the Fibiwoga family is currently acting through a self-styled developer, Obatob Properties Limited.

“Now the developer is advertising this fraudulently occupied land as available to the public for use as a residential estate.

“For the reasons stated above, the Ministry of Justice is taking steps to address the matter.

“Members of the public should inquire about the judgment and ask questions.

“Thus, the public is hereby put on notice that the claims by the Fibiwoga Family to 350 acres of land along Lagos Road, Apere Oba, via Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, are fictitious, fraudulent, and baseless,” he said.

He added that Obatob Properties Limited has no right to develop, assign, allot, or administer in the described area.

“Any person who deals with either entity or any other private person regarding the land does so at their own peril, and at the risk of a firm government response,” said the attorney-general.

Abiodun vows to sustain Ogun’s urban regeneration, unveils major infrastructure plans

Governor Dapo Abiodun has reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining Ogun State’s ongoing development drive through his administration’s Urban Regeneration Scheme.

Speaking over the weekend during an inspection of ongoing road projects in Ogun East Senatorial District, Abiodun highlighted his administration’s achievements, including the construction of a dry port to attract more investments and the development of over 4,000 affordable housing units in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Sagamu, Iperu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota.

He also revealed plans to extend the Blue Rail Line from Agbado to Kajola and the Red Line from Okokomaiko in Lagos to Agbara in Ogun State, further enhancing the state’s transport network and economic prospects.

He said: “We have built over 4,000, going to 5,000 affordable houses for medium and upper-income earners across the state. In Ilaro, they are eager for me to come and commission those houses. We have them in Iperu, Sagamu, and two in Abeokuta.

“We started our Urban Regeneration at the GRA in Abeokuta and began building the PMB estate also in Abeokuta. You can feel my excitement today because I can look at all that and even see the clips from the airport where the conveyor belts, metal detectors, and luggage scanners have started working, and I said to myself, ‘Something new has happened in Ogun State,’ and this needs to be sustained.”

He said 11 roads that have economic impact on the lives of the people have been identified and awarded for reconstruction across the state, assuring that fairness, equity, and inclusivity would be adhered to when distributing projects.

Governor Abiodun, who acknowledged the inability of his administration to reconstruct all the roads in the state, said, “There are many roads we would like to do, but the truth is that no administration can reconstruct all the required roads in eight years; it’s impossible.

“However, that much we have done is much less than needs to be done. So we are very thankful that we have achieved this feat. I think I can beat my chest and say we have probably constructed more roads than two administrations combined together.”

Speaking at Ode-Remo, he disclosed that contract for the construction of the 12-kilometer Akaka-Ilara-Ilisan road has been awarded, just as the construction of the Ode-Isara road would commence soon.

While inspecting the 15-kilometer Sagamu-Iperu-Ode-Sapaade road, Governor Abiodun described it as an arterial route that serves as a bypass to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, adding that it was divided into three phases and changed from a single to dual carriageway due to the cooperation of the people who pulled down their structures to give way for the road.

Governor Abiodun also inspected the 14-kilometer Sagamu-Ayepe road in Sagamu Local Government Area, where he informed that the first phase of 14 kilometers is being done in the area with a large population.

He assured that all the important roads with economic value in Sagamu would be constructed before the end of his administration.

Abiodun, who inspected the Igbeba junction-Yidi road, lauded the quality of work done on the road, noting that the three-feet drainage done on the road would ensure a free flow of water during the rainy season.

The governor referred to the state of the road before reconstruction as a “swimming pool,” saying that engineers from the state have proffered solutions to the perennial erosion that affects the city, adding that erosion would be a thing of the past before the end of his administration.

He appreciated the people for giving him the opportunity to administer the state, assuring that education, agriculture, youth empowerment, job creation, infrastructure, and other sectors would continue to receive the needed attention.

Ogun moves to enhance water infrastructure in Ijebu communities

The Ogun State Government has assured residents of Ijebu Ode and its environs of the government’s commitment to improving water infrastructure in the area to ensure a significant transformation in the supply of potable water across the region.

This assurance was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Water Resources, Hon. The tour was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to address the irregular supply of water in several Ijebu communities.

Otubanjo expressed optimism that the government’s renewed focus on the water sector would resolve long-standing issues and improve water supply across the Ijebu area.

She highlighted several challenges affecting water facilities in the area, including aging infrastructure, vandalism, and inadequate electricity supply to some water schemes. These factors, she noted, have hindered optimal functionality.

“There is a lot of work to be done,” she stated, adding that the government will act swiftly to rehabilitate critical water infrastructure to provide clean and safe water for residents of Ijebu-Ode and its surrounding communities.

Otubanjo assured residents that Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring a steady and sustainable supply of potable water.

  • Ogun and the death penalty option

Ogun and the death penalty option

    By: Elijah Udofia

There is no doubt that killings and acts of killings have become the order of the day in Nigeria. Apart from death in the hands of terrorists, the lives of Nigerians are daily being cut short by ritualists, cultists, kidnappers, armed robbers and a host of others.

From the north to the south, east to west, it is one killing after the other. It is either husband killing his wife or the wife killing her husband; father killing his daughter or son killing his mother. It is so pathetic that one begins to wonder when the country became a jungle, where life is so cheap. Even in the jungle, animals do not kill one another for the fun of it except for survival and territorial dominance.

In Nigeria of today, killing has become a hobby or a pastime for some people. While ritualists kill and harvest body parts for money making rituals, some kill to take possession of the deceased property. Others, like cultists carry out revenge killing or kill to show superiority while others kill for ransom.

About two years ago, the media, both traditional and new, was awash with how a boy who resides in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, connived with his friends, killed his girlfriend and used the head for money ritual purpose after disposing the body by burning. Sometimes one begins to wonder the benefits of these senseless killings or is it that humans have lost their humanity?

Also in Ogun State, in the middle of last year, three Indians and a Nigerian were kidnapped along the Ijebu-Ode – Ore axis, but were lucky to be rescued by men of the Nigeria Police. Similarly, not too long ago, the wife of retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Folasade Odumosu, was kidnapped on her way to work and the sum of N40m demanded for her release.

Apart from kidnapping, cult related killings are also rampant in places like Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode. Cultists’ reign of terror saw the killings of rival members with the lives of innocent people cut short in the clash.

The question now is: when did Nigeria and Nigerians descend to this abysmal low in morality? Can this be attributed to exposure to modernity, technology or influence of social media? What really went wrong in the past few decades that people no longer regards life as sacred?

Though the Nigeria’s legal system is noted for undue and prolong delays in delivering justice, it has also made some landmark judgements especially in cases involving murders and the likes by passing death sentences on those who took other people’s lives.

On February 3, an Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta, sentenced the trio of Lekan Adekanbi, Ahmed Odetola, and Waheed Adeniyi to death by hanging for the murder of Kehinde Fatinoye, his wife, Bukola Fatinoye, and their son, Oreoluwa, on January 1, 2023. The Fatinoyes were attacked at their Ibara GRA residence shortly after returning from a crossover church service. Led by their driver, Adekanbi, the assailants broke into the home around 2 am, murdered the couple and set both their bodies and the house on fire.

Not done, the attackers also tied up their son, Oreoluwa, along with an adopted son, before throwing them into the Ogun River. While Oreoluwa unfortunately lost his life, the adopted son miraculously survived.

After their arrest by the police, Adekanbi, in an interview with journalists admitted spearheading the attack, citing his employers’ refusal to increase his salary or grant him a loan request.

Many Nigerians observed with dismay that death row inmates remain in prisons for years, living off taxpayers’ money after the death sentence had been passed on them. Concerns have also arisen over the government reluctance to sign execution orders—a trend that has left many death row inmates languishing in correctional facilities indefinitely.

Since the return to democratic rule in Nigeria about 26 years ago, it is on record that no Nigerians governor has signed and ordered the execution of condemned criminals despite being empowered by the nation’s constitution. This act is quite contrary to what obtained during the military era where military administrators or governors approved execution once the death sentence was pronounced by competent courts.

Refusal or unwillingness to sign execution orders have no doubt contributed to the high rise of heinous crimes that most often led to loss of lives because in a situation where the Biblical “an eye for an eye” injunction is not followed to the letter and where justice is not seen to have been served, it emboldens criminals to commit more heinous crimes.

Disturbed by this ugly trend and the need to eradicate incidences of violent crimes like kidnapping, cultism, ritual killings and the likes as well as ensure that victims of these crimes get justice, the Ogun State government is considering a drastic action by looking at the death penalty option through signing death warrants of those sentenced to death by competent courts.

The Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), gave this indication and expressed concern on the increase in criminal activities in recent times in the state.

He observed that despite the proactive measures put in place by security agencies in tackling crimes, there appears to be an upsurge particularly in ritual killings, adding that government has identified the wrong perception that there will be no repercussions when some of these crimes are committed to be the root cause.

The Attorney General emphasized that the state government is looking seriously at this as a means of sending across a message that Ogun State is not a place where you can come and commit such serious crimes and get away with it.

“The law as at today, for example, a murder case attracts death penalty and some other offences. But if you look at it nationally, for a long time, there had been reluctant of government across the states particularly since the advent of democratic rule to sign death warrants but I assure you that the time we are now, we are looking very seriously at following the law to its letter”, he noted.

He alluded to the fact that constitutionally, “It is part of the duty of the governor to sign death warrants and I am certain that when he took that oath of office, he took it knowing fully well the responsibilities that comes with it and he is a governor that uphold the rule of law so I can assure you that in deserving cases, he will not shirk away from that constitutional duty”.

From time immemorial, society has always found a way of dispensing justice and death penalty has always been a way of ensuring that those who commit serious crimes especially the ones that involve human lives pay dearly for it.

It is often said that “drastic situation requires drastic solution” and since criminals have decided not to heed several warnings of Governor Dapo Abiodun, who on many occasions, advised them to turn a new leaf, then it is time for them to begin to face the hangmen’s noose.

The postulation of a celebrated thinker, John Locke, is apt on this: “This life is dangerous not because of those who perpetrate evils but because of those who watch it and let it happen”. Indeed, the Chief Security Officer of Ogun State is a man with zero tolerance for criminality; he has demonstrated that trait and will still exhibit that distinct value.
