Olamide whose latest song, ‘Science Student’, was placed on ‘Not To Be Broadcast’ by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, uploaded a black image on his Instagram page with the caption, ‘Orisa bi iya o si’ which in Yoruba means ‘there’s no god like a mother’.

Olamide speaks against drug abuse as critics bash ‘Science Student’

Despite the fact that some people have dissed his new and trending song, ‘Science Student,’ saying it promotes the use of hard drugs, hip hop act Olamide has called on all to support the fight against drug abuse.

He took to his Instagram page to declare his stance against drug abuse, urging others to emulate him.

“Since the release of #ScienceStudent, the support has been massive,” he wrote.

“As you are all sharing, dancing, singing along to this relatable music of mine, I want you all to take some time to reflect on the subject, say no to drug abuse.

“Don’t abuse alcohol; stop mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink responsibly. Don’t aspire the ‘highness state’ but a state of purpose fulfilment and passion discovery. Together let’s put an end to drug abuse and save as many lives as possible. The video will be out soon and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”

While several of Olamide’s lyrics have been the subject of condemnation, the singer continues to thrive.

Following the release of ‘Science Student’, a filmmaker and communications expert, Don Pedro Obaseki, had called for the banning of the song in avideo which went viral, saying it ‘eulogised’ the use of hard drugs.

Also, actress Kemi Lala Akindoju also condemned the trend of promoting and encouraging hard drugs and substances in the name of dance and music.

Though Lala did not mention any particular artiste, it is likely she was referring to Olamide’s ‘Science Student.’

Despite these and other criticisms, ‘Science Student’ is still trending online as many dancers upload their efforts at trying to produce the perfect one minute video that aptly depicts the lyrics of the song.

  • Ban Olamide’s ‘Science Student’, says Don Pedro Obaseki

Ban Olamide’s ‘Science Student’, says Don Pedro Obaseki

Notable filmmaker and communications expert Don Pedro Obaseki has asked the authories to ban the trending song, ‘Science Student’ by Olamide, claiming the song ‘eulogises’ drug abuse.

The celebrated filmmaker made this assertion in a recent video which has also been circulating on social media.

“My name is Don Pedro Obaseki and I’m driving on Third Mainland Bridge now, just coming from work in Lagos,” he said, beginning the video.

“I just came across a video that is trending stupendously online and it is a video by Olamide. Olamide Adedeji, you know, Badoo. And this one is called ‘Science Student.’

“I want to beg the Nigerian government, I want to beg the National Broadcasting Commission that if we have any sense of decency left. I’m driving and I can’t help it in this traffic when I heard that song. A song, that ‘Science Student’ song is encouraging our children to mix all forms of drugs. He’s speaking in Yoruba, yes, so you may not really get the import of what he’s talking about. He’s encouraging the children to take Tramadol. He’s encouraging the children to do ‘Monkey Tail.’ That is, he is eulogising all forms of illicit drugs and making it trendy.

“Our nation is a nation on its knees. So, for us to now have a boy as popular with a huge followership,  a huge opinion moulder like Olamide aka Olamide Badoo or Olamide Adedji, to put up a song that will be to a large extent, be an opinion moulder to the way children see themselves. We must ban this song. This song must not be allowed to hit the airwaves or any kind of wave.

“Not stopping there, for his so much celebration of what is bad about drug abuse, we should, the Nigerian government or the authorities, NDLEA, EFCC, whatever, should please save the minds of Nigerian kids. It’s enough that they walk the streets, every one of them proteting against the system in one way or the other. They do that with Rastafarian hair, Hare Krishna skull, Marxist beards, turning their fez caps the wrong way round and sagging trousers. For them now to be celebrating the use of codeine, he use of Tramadol, Skoochie – all are embedded in Olamide’s song.”

He also urged Nigerians desirous of a positive change for the country to share his video.

“I beg you, if you are a parent, share this. If you’re someone with a conscience, share this. If you’re someone interested in the future of this country, where our youths are already a beggarly bunch, share this because Nigeria cannot right now be at the end of the devil’s spoon. My name is Pedro Obaseki and I beg Nigerians to do the right thing.”

He however added that Olamide’s star appeal be harnessed for the good of the youth.

“We should get hold of Olamide and make him the ambassador of good behaviour for children because we cannot be buying his record and clicking on his links only for our children to be the ones at the receiving end of his apostate pronouncements and crusade,” he said.

“This is enough. Enough is enuogh. I don’t only speak as a Nigerian, I speak as an investor in the Nigerian entertainment content sector. God bless Nigeria and please let’s beg Olamide to pull that video down and change that song. That is a song that is going to be a nail on the coffin of the future of our children. God bless Nigeria.”

While no ban is yet out, Olamide’s song has continued to trend as the artiste has continued promotion of the song.

  • Kwese enthrones grassroots with Olamide

    Kwese enthrones grassroots with Olamide

I’m usually thrilled by a mandate that tends to place priority on the masses, especially as a business decision. Therefore, when Chichi Nwoko, General Manager of Kwese Free Sports expressed to me, her brand’s firm approach for mass market, at the last Olamide Live in Concert #OLIC4, held on December 16, 2017, I knew what long-term benefits lie in enthroning the grassroot fans.

For as cheap as N1, 000 gate ticket purchased for the popular side at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos where the event held, two fans of the hip hop artiste, and three more, to be selected through other activations, will join the rave singer on all-expense trip to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, courtesy of the management of free-to-air channel, Kwese Free Sports.

“We are not only partnering with him,” said Nwoko.

“We are also giving him the opportunity to engage with our audience of young men. We want them to enjoy the World Cup with us. So, what we have done is, not only are we going to be taking Olamide to the World Cup, we are allowing him to take five of his fans; and these are regular people on the street who wouldn’t have the opportunity. We are proud to sponsor that experience. This is in line with our brand’s promise to not only show the matches but to also be on ground. So, it’s important for us to be at these places and there is no Mainland/Island division here. We will continue to look forward to this kind of platform to expose and encourage our audiences as they watch us.”

It is interesting to know that for Kwese Free Sports, it is about the fans and Olamide and his music is only serving as a veritable medium.

“It’s about having impact and connecting with our audience,” she says.

“We know Soccer is very big, we know that the World Cup is a big event and Super Eagles will be playing, and if you look around, you would find a lot of young people. So we are looking for interesting ways a connecting with them. For us, sports is entertainment, there is a mix in there. Even as we do a lot of these viewing centers, we will be having a lot of music as part of the experience. So, at every point, the first thing that drives us are the fans.”

I wanted to know if the ideology of this fans attraction would be confused with music and entertainment, especially since, according to Nwoko, “There is a natural synergy between sport and music, and that’s what we are trying to bring back.” Would Olamide still be the golden boy of this project, if he were to be playing some elitist kind of music?

“I know my market,” said Nwoko.

“I’m not lost and I’m also happy with where we are; we are a free-to-air channel which is the very premise to make sports available to the masses. A lot of the elite people may have other means of consuming sport. But I think we are very targeted in our approach for mass market and musicians that appeal to that, that we can work with and leverage to create some experiences that otherwise wouldn’t have been there. Yes, we will consider other artistes but our focus is how we can elevate and impact the mass audiences with free sports.”

To underscore the place of Olamide in the brand equity of Kwese Free Sports, Nwoko says “we found there is an amazing love and respect that people have for Olamide, and so for us to be able to connect to that humility- that story that resonates with a lot of our viewers – someone that’s humble, someone who started from the bottom and is now a success story – as a brand that’s something we love to align with.”

Now, this is how the Mundial show is expected to play out:

“We are hoping that when the Super Eagles win, we break out into a party, and his (Olamide) music. We are a very musical people. For me I think that on the other side of entertainment is sport. Just to reiterate, we want to plug in to what our fans enjoy. We are going to pick one match, and it’s definitely going to be with the Super Eagles, probably at the group stage. We are working closely with Integral Media who will handle the whole hospitality,” she said.
