Omokri accuses Obi of fomenting division across political parties

Former presidential aide and political commentator, Reno Omokri, has accused the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, of leaving a trail of divisions and internal crises across political parties he has been associated with.

In a post yesterday on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Omokri alleged that Obi’s political journey has been marked by factionalism and infighting.

The activist recalled that Obi’s alleged creation of division in parties started from his early days in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Omokri stated that Obi was politically groomed by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu but later fell out with the party’s leadership, a development he claimed led to deep internal divisions within APGA.

He also alleged that Obi’s exit from the party was followed by internal disputes.

According to him, Obi caused similar turmoil after moving to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he insisted on contesting against his former political associates, a move he said contributed to internal rifts within the party.

Omokri further claimed that Obi’s defection to the LP ahead of the 2023 general election resulted in the party splitting into two factions, each producing its national leadership and National Executive Committee (NEC).

The commentator noted that Obi joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, last year, and alleged that tensions have already surfaced within the party, citing comments by the opposition platform’s official spokesperson who reportedly described the Obidient movement as “divisive”.

Omokri also raised questions about Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, alleging that poverty levels increased during his tenure and claiming that no new public educational institutions were established under his administration.

Besides, the public commentator alluded to past allegations of human rights abuses linked to security operations in Anambra State during Obi’s time in office.

He queried Obi’s ability to handle national security if elected president.

“Having gone through four political parties with the same outcome of division and factionalism, the question is whether the problem lies with the parties or with Peter Obi,” Omokri wrote.

JUST IN: Senate confirms Fani-Kayode, Omokri, ex-INEC boss, 61 others as ambassadors

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of 64 nominees for appointment as Career and Non-Career Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, presented by its chairman, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger North).

In his presentation, Senator Bello said the committee screened the nominees and found them suitable for appointment, noting that their nominations complied with relevant provisions of the law and extant guidelines governing diplomatic postings.

According to the report, 34 of the nominees were confirmed as Career Ambassadors, while 30 others were cleared as Non-Career Ambassadors.

Among those confirmed as Career Ambassadors are Amb. Nwaobiala Ezenwa Chukwuemeka (Abia), Betso Maimunah Ibrahim (Adamawa), Monica Okwuchukwu Enebechi (Anambra), Amb. Mohammed Mahmud Lele (Bauchi), Amb. Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), Amb. Adams Jane Bassey (Cross River), Amb. Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed (Kwara) and Amb. Ramat Mohammed Omobolanle (Lagos).

Others include Amb. Adeyemi Adebayo Emmanuel (Ekiti), Amb. Okechukwu Kingsley Onaga (Enugu), Amb. Abdussalam Habu Zayyad (Kano), Amb. Shehu Ilu Barde (Katsina), Amb. Haidara Mohammed Idris (Kebbi), Amb. Bako Adamu Umar (Kogi), Amb. Shaga John Shamah (Nasarawa), Amb. Ibrahim Danlami (Niger), Reuben Abimbola Samuel (Ondo), Amb. Akande Wahab Adekola (Osun), Amb. Luther Ogbomode Ayo-Kalata (Rivers), Danladi Yakubu Nyaku (Taraba) and Bello Dogon-Daji Haliru (Sokoto).

The Senate also confirmed prominent political figures and technocrats as Non-Career Ambassadors. They include former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Ita S.J. Enang (Akwa Ibom); former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu; former INEC Chairman, Prof. Alhaji Mahmud Yakubu; former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (rtd); former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd); and former Ondo lawmaker, Senator Jimoh F. Ibrahim.

Also confirmed were Chief Olufemi Fani-Kayode, Prof. Isaac F. Adewole, Mr. Reno Omokri, Chief Olufemi Pedro, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Mrs. Ajimobi Fatima Florence, Senator Grace Bent, Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut, Dr. Yakubu N. Gambo, and several others drawn from across the six geopolitical zones.

Of the last batch of 65 Ambassadors-designate transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, only the nominee representing Yobe state, Adamu Garba Talba Nangree, has not been confirmed.

Nangree was not at the screening organised by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs last week.

Senator Bello had remarked that he was in communication with the nominee and that he would be screened in his office at a later date.

After the adoption of the report, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared the nominees confirmed, urging them to serve Nigeria diligently and project the country’s image positively in their respective postings.

    • Ndume, Oshiomhole in fireworks

There was drama yesterday at the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Room during the screening of Ambassadorial nominees.

A confrontation between  Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume and Adams Oshiomhole over a procedure tensed up the usually calm atmosphere as former ministers, former governors, ex-lawmakers and top technocrats filed in for screening.

At  the end, the Committee cleared all nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; ex-Interior Minister, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd.); former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu; former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; former presidential aide Reno Omokri; Senator Ita Enang; Senator Grace Bent; and others.

But it was Omokri’s turn that brought the session to a boiling point.

The committee had been attending to nominees in batches of five. When Omokri walked in with four career diplomats and after due introductions, Ndume immediately moved a motion and urged the panel to let all five nominees, including Omokri, ‘take a bow and go.’

The motion had barely landed when other senators, including Adams Oshiomhole, Ned Nwoko, Abdul Ningi and Mohammed Onawo, signalled their desire to speak.

Committee Chairman Senator Abubakar Sani Bello recognised Oshiomhole, prompting Ndume to insist that his motion must first be seconded before any comment.

What followed was a heated verbal exchange that froze the screening for nearly 20 minutes.

Ndume insisted procedure must be followed.

Oshiomhole insisted recognition by the chairman superseded everything.

    At one point, Oshiomhole declared:

“I cannot be intimidated by people who go here and there.”

    Ndume fired back:

“There is a motion on ground. It must be seconded or it dies.”

    Oshiomhole retorted:

“Then let it die. Allow me to speak.”

The room grew noisy as senators argued over parliamentary procedure. The Chairman repeatedly appealed for calm.

When order was restored, Oshiomhole used his floor time to defend Omokri. He described him as a ‘pragmatist’ who had shown the capacity to rise above old political hostilities.

He said Omokri’s recent actions proved he could “work in the national interest” and deserved support.

He also praised President Tinubu for appointing nominees who had previously criticised him, saying it showed “large-hearted leadership.”

The Chairman eventually cut him short:

“Senator Adams, you’ve made your point very clear.”

Senator Onowakpo then seconded Ndume’s motion, clearing the path for the batch to take a bow.

Ningi used his intervention to push for a nominee from his state and emphasised that ‘taking a bow’ was not equivalent to full Senate confirmation.

Onawakpo supported allowing the diplomats and Omokri to bow and go, arguing that the committee had already established precedent.

Despite the fireworks, the Committee cleared all nominees who appeared. Others cleared are: Jerry Manwe, Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, Erelu Angela Adebayo, Mrs  Florence Ajimobi, Olufemi Pedro, Ibas Ibok-Ete, Prof. Isaac Adewole, among others.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that many nominees were allowed to bow and go because they had served in the National Assembly or held senior public offices.

Following full clearance for all nominees by the committee except Adamu Garba Talba Nangree, who was absent, the Senate may likely confirm the nominees next week.

Delta APC praises Tinubu for Omokri’s ambassadorial nomination

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been applauded by the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for nominating a former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, as an ambassador-designate.

“Omokri’s nomination speaks volumes about President Tinubu’s commitment to merit, national inclusion and the recognition of individuals who have shown unwavering passion for the advancement of Nigeria,” the party stated in a congratulatory message by the chapter Chairman, Mr Omeni Sobotie, yesterday.

It commended the President for identifying and elevating the Delta-born technocrat and advocate whose voice and intellectual rigour, it stated, contributed to shaping national conversations over the years.

The party stated that the nomination was a national recognition that had brought immense pride to the state and the nominee’s family.

Congratulating Omokri, the APC said the nomination recognised his intellectual contributions, his longstanding engagement in policy discourse, and extensive international exposure, which consistently demonstrated his capacity to serve Nigeria at the highest levels.

“As a political party committed to promoting excellence, competence and patriotic service, Delta APC is delighted to celebrate yet another proud son of our beloved State who has distinguished himself with honour and integrity on the national and global stage,” the party stated.

It emphasised that it viewed the nomination as a shining example of the possibilities that lie ahead of Deltans, who continue to excel across diverse professional fields.

The APC expressed confidence in Omokri’s capacity to carry out his assignment competently and diligently.

“We are confident that he will not only excel in this diplomatic role but will also serve as a bridge-builder, an image-bearer of Nigeria’s potential and a worthy representative of Delta State,” it said.

According to the APC, “Mr Omokri’s global footprint – spanning public service, advocacy, media, humanitarian work and diplomacy – positions him uniquely to project Nigeria’s values, deepen bilateral relations and promote our national interests with distinction.”

The party urged the ambassador-designate to continue to embody the virtues of diligence, humility and patriotism that characterised his journey thus far.

The APC urged all its members in the state to pray for Omokri’s success.

Omokri mobilises support for Dangote Refinery

    • Says it will enhance Naira’s value

Former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has called on Nigerians to support the Dangote Refinery, saying it’s a national asset that will shore up the value of the Naira.

Omokri spoke yesterday during his tour of the refinery’s facilities in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos.

“Nigerians should be proud of what is happening here. All of us have a role to play. The citizens, the unions, and the government must support the refinery because its export will bolster the value of the Naira,” he stated.

He warned that any actions to undermine the facility will lead to a decline in the value of the Naira, emphasising that it is in the interest of Nigerians, not just Dangote, to ensure the investment succeeds.

Omokri, accompanied by the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Dakolo, praised the facility as the world’s largest single-train refinery, with control second only to that of ANAMCO in Saudi Arabia.

“This is not an up-to-date facility. It is an up-to-tomorrow facility,” the former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan stated.

He emphasised that the refinery is an asset to the country, explaining that it will not add to the pressure on public utilities.

According to him, “This refinery is not a drain on the public power or water supply. In fact, they produce 10% of Nigeria’s electricity. In this facility (refinery), they generate 500 MW. At the fertiliser plant, they generate 150 MW, bringing the total to 650 MW. So, we need to support this initiative.”

He commended the President of Dangote Industries Limited, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, for his entrepreneurial spirit and patriotism.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his foresight in envisioning the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State many years ago when he was the state governor.

Omokri marvelled at the refinery’s worth of $25 billion, predicting it could rise to $30 billion after the fertiliser plant’s expansion.

Speaking at the refinery’s terminal, he said 650 ships had loaded products from the facility within a year of operation.

He said the achievement was significant because it will enhance the export’s value and increase the purchasing power of Nigerians.

Omokri stated, “The Naira in your pocket will have no value if we do not replace imports with locally produced goods and services. Dangote is the reason Nigeria is no longer the top petrol importer in Africa. South Africa has overtaken us. In fact, we now have a complete turnaround. Nigeria is now the largest exporter of petroleum products in West Africa.

“The more ships that leave here, the more the Naira gains value. That is why we all must support this refinery to operate. We all need to support Dangote for everything he is doing.”

He stated that the refinery, together with other positive policies of the Tinubu administration, had reversed the country’s trade deficit.

“Last year, we had a trade surplus of $14 billion, Omokri emphasised, predicting, “This year, we are about to surpass that. Already, have surpassed last year’s surplus by 44.3%. It’s because of things like this.”

He urged Nigerians to look inwards and buy made-in-Nigeria products to strengthen the country’s economy.

“My message to Nigerians is, ‘Let’s buy Nigerian. Let’s be intentional about buying petrol refined in Nigeria,” Omokri said.

He expressed delight that the company’s facilities were being maintained by the youth, including women from across the country.

  • Omokri challenges Cruz, others to name alleged perpetrators of Christian genocide in Nigeria

Omokri challenges Cruz, others to name alleged perpetrators of Christian genocide in Nigeria

Social commentator and influencer, Reno Omokri, has challenged United States Senator Ted Cruz and others to name and shame those allegedly perpetrating Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Omokri, ehile affirming that there was no case of genocide in Nigeria, added that he believes the Senator’s comments were based on misinformation, misunderstanding and miscommunication.

He also blamed the United States for the insecurity challenges faced by Nigeria, adding that some of the policies of the US government fueled insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a press conference, Omokri said: “Saying that there is genocide is against common sense. Saying that there’s a genocide in Nigeria is like saying that in the United States, every year, close to 30,000 people are murdered and disproportionately, they are black people. Can we in Nigeria start to use our media power and say there is a genocide against black people in America?

“The claim is not true, but if you think it is true, don’t just come and make accusations, name them and shame them. Mention a name. So we have to go by facts and not by emotions.

“A genocide is when you have a deliberate act of policy by a state actor or by people who are connected to state actors against a particular ethnicity, against a particular religion. However, in Nigeria, due to policies unleashed by the Obama administration, we have had security issues and we are fighting them. We’re doing the best that we can.

“So, if you ask me if there is a genocide in Nigeria, of course there’s not. However, if you believe that Nigerian state officials are facilitating terror, mention them, name them. Help us name them.

“I believe Senator Cruz means well, that’s my personal belief, but that he doesn’t have the right information. If he knows the names of the Nigerian officials who are facilitating this genocide, he should name and shame them. Because he did say that he knows and that he’s aware of them”.

He also hinted that deaths recorded in Nigeria, according to the Global Terror Index, reduced from 7,512 in 2015 to 565 in 2024.

The Secretary-General of the Jama’at Nasril Islam (JNI), Prof. Khalid Aliyu, also dismissed the claim as baseless and strange.

He said: “It sounds really very strange for such an unverified claim that there is Christian genocide in Nigeria. I think it is really very dangerous to change the paradigm and the narrative from the act of criminality, and identify it with ethnic nationality or religious inclination.

“I think lumping a baseless claim onto certain people does not hold water. I think this claim is intended to create bad blood and to further extend the challenges we are going through in this country. And I think there may be a sinister motive behind such claims, to really draw us back from going out of the quagmire we are passing through.

“And so this claim, to me, is baseless. They don’t hold water. There’s no truth in them. And we hope we’ll see the truth in the light of its worth and value”.

Omokri faults U.S. talkshow host on alleged killing of Christians

No genocide against Christians, Omokri tells popular US tv talk show host, Maher

Former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has refuted a claim made by a popular United States (U.S.) political talk show host, Mr Bill Maher, that Christians are being targeted and killed in Nigeria.

Based on a viral video in which a man with a Nigerian accent claimed that over 500,000 Christians were killed in the country last year, Maher, a comedian who hosts the longest-running talk show in the US, Real Time with Bill Maher, asserted that a systematic genocide was happening in Nigeria.

The offensive video was circulated by international X influencers, including Radio Genoa, an anti-Islamic personality, who stokes negative sentiments against the Muslim faith.

However, Omokri, in a statement yesterday, rebutted Maher’s claim, asserting there was no basis for the assertion. He said that the claim contradicted the widely accepted figures on terrorism and violent crime deaths worldwide.

He countered, “Mr Maher ought to know that there is an apolitical global body with the mandate to report on deaths from insecurity and terrorism worldwide, and that is the Institute for Economics and Peace, which annually publishes the Global Terrorism Index, which calculates how many people were killed from terror, insecurity, war, and conflicts in the world.

Read Also: Abuja-Kaduna train services resume October 1 as NRC releases schedule

“According to the Institute’s 2024 Global Terrorism Index, a total of 8,352 people died from terror and insecurity last year. Even when you add this to the 36,000 civilians the United Nations says were killed by armed conflicts globally in the same year, you will agree with me that it is preposterous to allege that half a million Christians were killed in Nigeria last year, or Mr Maher’s more conservative figure of 100,000.”

Accusing comedian Maher, who is neither a Christian nor has visited Nigeria, of mischief and falsehood peddling, Omokri stated that the situation in Nigeria has been exaggerated.

“To be sure, we do face a challenge with insecurity in Nigeria, caused by banditry and farmer/herder clashes in the Northwest and Middle Belt, and an Islamic insurgency in the Northeast, which has largely subsided and is in its final stages,” he said.

Omokri explained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had directly addressed the issue of insecurity in the country, noting that those responsible for terrorism and banditry are being arrested, prosecuted, and neutralised.

He recalled that Kabiru Sokoto, the mastermind behind the St. Theresa Catholic Church Christmas Day bombing on 25 December 2011 in Madalla, Niger State, which killed 37 Christians, had been convicted.

He also recalled that those responsible for the attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, on 5 June 2022, have also been apprehended and are now facing prosecution.

Omokri emphasised that over 16 notorious bandits who caused trouble for Nigerians in the Northwest and North-east, including Kachalla Ali Kawaje, Kachalla Halilu Sububu, Kachalla Damina, Kachalla Dangote, Kachalla Jafaru, Kachalla Barume, Kachalla Shehu, and Tsoho, have been neutralised.

Additionally, the former presidential aide observed that victims of terrorism and banditry included both Christians and Muslims, explaining that more of the latter had been killed as violence subsided.

He stated, “According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, ACLED, in the last decade, Nigeria has experienced the highest number of deaths from insecurity in the Northwest of the country, which is the heartland of Islam in Nigeria and the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, the headquarters for Islamic leadership in the country.

“According to the ACLED, between 2010 and 2023, 13,485 people have died in these attacks, with the vast majority being Muslims. Bad enough. But nowhere near 500,000, or 100,000.”

Omokri explained that the initial intention of the terrorists was to spark a religious war, which was frustrated by the maturity of Christian leaders, including Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, who dissuaded Christians from retaliating against the violence on their brothers.

“The point of this treatise is simply to dispel the propaganda spread by either ignorant or mischievous persons about a genocide or regicide in Nigeria. Such a thing is the figment of the imagination of those making such wild and dangerous claims,” the former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan said.

Olisa Metuh confirms Omokri’s role in hiring Segun Showunmi as Atiku’s spokesperson

Former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has backed Reno Omokri’s claim that he was responsible for hiring Segun Showunmi as spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking with newsmen via a phone call, Metuh confirmed Omokri’s statement, stating, “It happened in 2018 when I was still active in politics. Reno called me to recommend someone for Atiku. I initially thought of Deji Adeyanju, but he had left the PDP. I had encouraged him to form an advocacy group instead.”

Metuh added that he eventually suggested Segun Showunmi. “I remembered Segun and recommended him to Reno. I told Segun to call Reno, and he did. That was it.”

He stressed that there was no confusion regarding how Showunmi emerged as Atiku’s spokesperson, saying, “There is absolutely no controversy about that.”

Before ending the conversation, Metuh remarked, “I don’t think Reno and Segun are still in the PDP anymore, so there is really no controversy there.”

Omokri, a former presidential aide to Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier revealed on ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast that he was instrumental in hiring several aides for Atiku, including Showunmi.

He also stated, in a Facebook post, that he personally negotiated Showunmi’s salary during that time.

According to him, “If I am nothing at all, I am a meticulous record keeper. In May 2018, Olisa Metuh, the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, recommended Segun Showunmi for the role of spokesman to Waziri Atiku Abubakar.

“Mr. Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to send his resume (what we call a CV) to me. Thereafter, Olisa Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to contact me for a job interview.

“I spoke to Segun Showunmi from California and negotiated his salary with him. I thereafter informed Waziri Atiku Abubakar, and Segun Showunmi was announced as his spokesman on the terms I negotiated with him.

“If there is any controversy or if anybody is using foul language to deny the obvious truth, then I urge the media to contact Mr. Olisa Metuh, who is an eyewitness and who was the one who recommended Segun Showunmi to me for employment as Waziri Atiku’s spokesman.

“After he was employed, Mr. Segun Showunmi returned to Mr. Olisa Metuh to thank him for recommending him to me.

“I do not want to be forced to publish documentary evidence. I would rather not. But if I have to, then I can. I urge anyone wanting to deny the obvious to think twice. Again, I repeat that if I am nothing at all, at least I am a meticulous record keeper.”

Omokri: I remain with Tinubu despite Atiku camp’s attacks

A former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has stated that he will continue to be a staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, despite the relentless attacks on him from the media team of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He stated that his support for the president was grounded in his courageous presentation of significant economic policies, which the PDP failed to implement whilst in power.

“Yes, I support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, forcefully so, because he is delivering the results we in the Peoples Democratic Party said we would achieve: fuel subsidy removal, Naira flotation, devolution of power, and loans to students,” he stated in a statement yesterday.

Atiku’s media team, in a recent statement, condemned Omokri for his consistent support for Tinubu and his economic policies, declaring he was a turncoat for abandoning their principal for the president.

However, the former media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, stated that there was absolutely no reason for the former presidential candidate’s team to fight him, particularly as he had never spoken unkindly about their principal.

Omokri stated that due to the respect he had for Atiku, he would not respond in kind to the unjust attacks on his character by Atiku’s media team.

“That I will never respond to them in kind is not for want of ability. Media-wise, there is no asset at their disposal that I do not have at mine, at an equal or greater capacity,” he stated.

READ ALSO: Tinubu orders speedy execution of approved projects

Omokri, a former staunch supporter of Atiku, stated that he shifted his loyalty to Tinubu because, in his judgment, the president had the vision and capacity to redirect Nigeria’s economy for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

“It does not matter if the cat is Black or White, as long as it catches mice; and it matters not if the party in power is APC or PDP, as long as it delivers progress for the Nigerian nation,” he explained.

He argued that the APC was not ideologically driven, contending that it was inappropriate for the PDP’s former presidential candidate’s media team to accuse him of jumping ship since their principal had, at different times, been a member of both the Action Congress, formed by the president, and the APC.

He stated, “In case Nigerians have forgotten, the APC is not an ideologically driven party. It is a coalition. The ideologically driven parties were the legacy parties, including the ACN, CPC, ANPP, and nPDP.

To demonstrate the congruence of Waziri Atiku Abubakar’s political and economic ideology with the ACN founded by Asiwaju Tinubu, one need only recall that he was their presidential candidate in 2007, when ACN was known as AC.

“Regarding ideology, President Bola Tinubu and Waziri Atiku are both of the 1989 Social Democratic Party stock, and there is little or no difference between them.”

Omokri explained that there are multiple precedents for moving political support from one bloc to another based on Nigeria’s best interests.

According to him, “In 2014, major political stakeholders, who had previously supported President Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, felt that a realignment with General Muhammadu Buhari and the then-burgeoning All Progressives Congress was the best alternative for the country.

“That decision was taken, and neither then-President Jonathan nor his media team excoriated them. To this day, President Jonathan, whom I served and who praised me in his autobiography, My Transition Hours, for unwavering loyalty, has never attacked those who made such decisions.”

Omokri stated that despite switching loyalty, he had never betrayed any confidential information he acquired while working for Atiku. “I do not have any plans for such in the future.”

He stated that he had never attempted to profit, either privately or publicly, from such confidences, whether politically or economically, and would never do so.

Omokri stated, “I have refrained from crossing swords with those around Waziri Atiku Abubakar, some of whom I recruited. Which is why I find it odd that they would do so to me.

“Waziri Atiku Abubakar might want to reconsider the calibre of media personnel he engages if they oppose individuals who do not combat him.

“To therefore attack me, when I have never even as much as said one negative word about Waziri or his immediate coterie, is most unkind. Nevertheless, I will not respond in kind.

“Waziri Atiku Abubakar has been good to me, and I shall remain true to the friendship that has fostered the confidence he has in me.

“I will say to these people who do not understand how to disagree without being disagreeable that nobody profits from a mud fight. And nobody knows what tomorrow holds.

“I thank Waziri Atiku Abubakar for the confidence he has placed in me. I recall our last conversation, during which he spoke glowingly about me; therefore, I choose to endure the insults directed at me without any retaliation.

“I am only exercising restraint out of respect, not out of cowardice.”

However, he stated that he would not reserve such courtesies for Mr Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party. “As long as Obi takes on President Tinubu, I will tackle him.”

Omokri urges South South to unite behind Akpabio

A former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has urged the South-South region to rally behind the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to ensure the stability and consolidation of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

According to him, the Senate president’s legislative leadership had cultivated a harmonious executive-legislative relationship, creating a conducive atmosphere for the success of the reforms, which he explained were producing positive outcomes.

“Because of Akpabio’s deft management of the federal legislature, President Tinubu has enjoyed peaceful executive-legislative coexistence,” he stated in a statement yesterday.

“Under him, the president’s most significant reform initiative, which are the four tax reform bills, namely, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Tax Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, have been passed.”

He stated that this was a significant contrast to President Muhammadu Buhari’s first term experience, which the former presidential aide explained could not achieve much due to the strained executive-legislative relationship.

Omokri urged South-South politicians from different parties to unite, emphasising that coherence was essential for them to maintain the country’s third highest political position.

He stated: “As a region, we in the South-South cannot afford to demonstrate political instability in that position, which is a key post in the hierarchy of power in Nigeria. It is a strategic office that is more vital than any other in maintaining the balance of power in our region.

“We must all temporarily forget about party, religion, and other differences, and unite as one South-South behind the leader that God has given us for this period in time.”

He urged the region’s leaders to emulate the North-central, which maintained the stability of the Senate presidency under Senator David Mark, who served two terms of eight years.

“As a region, the Niger Delta must demonstrate that we possess political maturity and stability, and can effectively manage our ethnic diversity. Just as Senator David Mark served as Senate president for eight undisturbed years, from 2007 to 2015, so should Senator Akpabio serve uninterrupted for eight years, God sparing his life,” the former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan said.

Omokri praised Akpabio’s leadership style, which he said had united the legislature and deepened democracy by stabilising the polity. “This would not have been possible if we had a temperamental Senate president from a politically unstable region that periodically pulled down and set up the nation’s president.”

Stating that the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda could only be sustained by a collaborative, rather than a confrontational federal legislature, Omokri urged for unwavering support for Akpabio among the South-South political leaders.

“That is why I call on the South-South to jealously and zealously guard what we have in Akpabio. We must not allow what was done to President Goodluck Jonathan to be repeated with Senator Godswill Akpabio, the political leader of the South-South,” he said.
