National honours: What it means to us, say Joke Silva, Kenneth Nnebue

Again, it was a day of glory for the Nigerian motion picture industry, otherwise called Nollywood, when three of its best, Joke Silva, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Kenneth Nnebue, were all conferred with the Member of the Order of Federal Republic (MFR) on Monday by President Goodluck Jonathan at the colourful ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, as part of the celebratory activities to mark Nigeria’s 54th Independence anniversary.

The veteran Nollywood stars were among the over 313 Nigerians honoured for their contributions to national development, particularly in their areas of endeavour.

One of the recipients, Joke Silva, who turned 53 on Monday when she was conferred with the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) award, said: “Today happens to be my birthday. For me, it’s the best birthday gift ever. What more can I ask for?”

The versatile actress, who could not conceal her emotions, further said: “One of the surprising things for me was to see the President wear a dazzling smile. It was nice to also see so many honourable Nigerians. You can’t, but feel so honoured in such a moment. So, I feel greatly honoured and humbled.”

When asked if the award would change anything about her, she said: “Nothing is going to change. I will just continue to work the way I have been working.”

However, Kenneth Nnebue, who is famed for his 1992 movie, Living in Bondage, was absent at the ceremony. The ace movie producer, who initially declined comments on his absence at the awards ceremony, however, said: “From the day I became born-again, I decided to leave the things of the world. I don’t want to talk about the award. The award I talk about now is the award that Christ will give when he comes”.

Contrary to the insinuations in some quarters, he said his absence at the event didn’t mean that he would not accept the award. According to him, “I don’t fall under the category of those who turn down such honour.  It is a good thing and I appreciate it. But I am running a race. You may not understand. I appreciate it, but I am looking at the Cross. I don’t talk about anything except the coming of Jesus Christ.”

BringBackOurGirls campaign: Monalisa Chinda leads protest in Lagos

Top Nollywood actress, Monalisa Chinda, yesterday, led celebrities and entertainers in a fresh protest on the #BringBackOurGirls campaign at Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.

The mother of one had earlier announced the venue, dress code and time of rally when she stated: “Dress code: Red caps, scarves and tops”.

Also, popular Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who just returned from a business trip abroad, urged her colleagues to be part of the campaign.

Speaking on her arrival at the airport, she said: “If you can, join us at the #BringBackOurGirls Lagos Rally at Allen Roundabout, Ikeja.”

Over the last few days, more artistes have been joining the clamour for the release of the over 200 girls abducted from their hostel in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.

Artistes present at the rally include notable rapper, Sasha P, Ebony Life TV boss, Mo Abudu and Hip hop singer, Banky W, among others.

It will be recalled that on Tuesday, April 15, more than 200 female students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Bornu State by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

A large number of students were reportedly taken away in trucks into the Sambisa forest. Houses in Chibok were also burnt down during the incident.

The international union body of European students, yesterday, also joined in the campaign to bring back the abducted students.

The school had been closed for four weeks prior to the attack due to the deteriorating security situation. However, students from different schools had been called in to sit for the final exams in physics when the incident happened.

  • What turns me on in a man

What turns me on in a man

Fast-rising Nollywood star, Vivica Ijeoma Anuforo, may not be as famous as Genevieve Nnaji and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, but she has attracted thousands of fans for her outstanding roles in over 15 Nollywood movies, including Turning Point, Broken Silence and The Bride is Mine, among others. In this interview with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, the Political Science graduate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, who also trained as an actor at the Royal Art Academy, Lagos, opened up on her journey into the make-believe world, among other interesting issues.

HOW long have you been acting and how many movies do you have to your credit?

I’ve been acting for the past three years. Acting is something I decided to ‘chase’ because of how much I realised I wanted it and how much fulfillment I could derive from it. Initially, my dad wasn’t really excited about it. But he now supports me and knows I have a good head on my shoulders. I’ve always been fascinated by the movies I grew up watching. The truth is that, all I’m concerned about is being an actor. I have featured in Turning Point directed by Niyi Towolawi, Broken Silence directed by Desmond Elliot, The Bride is Mine directed by Ugezu J. Ugezu and 11am directed by Alex Mouth, among others.

The industry is highly competitive, so how do you intend to hit the A-list category?

Well, healthy competition is good for the growth of any industry. But where I am and what I am aiming at is making good movies that people can enjoy. Right now, I’m really focused on my craft and how to get better at it. This is because I believe that being in the A-list category is an incentive that one earns for being the best at what one does.

    Are there actors you admire?

I love Liz Benson and wish she would come back fully to Nollywood. I think our screens miss her. It will be a dream come true to work with her-she is so eloquent and classy. I also have a lot of respect for Genevieve Nnaji because when she broke out, actresses who aren’t light-skinned were not really favoured in terms of getting roles. Mama Purity (Mercy Johnson) is great-her depth as an actor is undeniable. I also like RMD, not only because he is a fine man with dimples to die for, but because he is such a fantastic actor. I learn a lot from these actors.

So, you actually have a crush on RMD?

I think I like his person.

    Where does your inspiration come?

I draw inspiration from different things, especially success stories of famous people, movies, books, God and family etc. But I would say my greatest inspiration has been my friend and stylist, Precious Adewale. Sometimes, I feel like she believes in the success of my career more than I do. Even when I feel I’m meeting road blocks, she tells me: “Failure is not on the table talk less of it being an option.” I love her.

So, what has been your unique selling point over the years?

I’d say my unique selling point is my entire body. In acting school, we were taught that the only tool the actor has is his or her entire body.

Do you have a limit when it comes to accepting roles?

I can go very far in interpreting any role and can do all that without going nude. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to play a role that doesn’t project my interest and principles as an actor.

    So, what are these principles?

My philosophy of life would be “never look down on anyone.” I think I learnt that from my father. He hates to see anyone being maltreated because of what they have or do not have-he can relate to anyone, no matter his or her status. He made me understand that all men are born equal.

Do you really see a future in Nollywood?

Of course, I do! I do see a big future in Nollywood; otherwise, what am I doing there? We’ve seen lots of Hollywood actors reaching out just to have some sort of affiliation with us. That goes to show, without a doubt, that we are doing something right.

So, what do you think is the way forward?

I think the way forward is for us to continue to make great movies that can meet international standards. So far, we aren’t doing badly. It would also be nice to give the budding actors a real chance because there are talents amongst us- all we are looking for is a real chance to show what we can do. That’s why I’ll always be thankful to Aunty Emem Isong and her sister, aunty Uduak, for the opportunities they’ve given me as an up and coming actress.

Aside acting, what else do you do?

Besides acting, I sell accessories, including shoes, bags, shirts and palm oil.

What is it that lots of people don’t know about you?

People probably don’t know that I’m ‘clusterphobic’. I hate to stay in an enclosed space. And I love Amala a lot (laughs). Again, when I’m stuck in traffic, I like to eat Gala and ice cream.

What has life taught you over the years?

Life has taught me that the only one worth putting your trust in is God. Besides, it has taught me that not everyone who helps you should be called a friend.

    Any regret so far?

I think everything in my past has set me up to be the woman that I am today. So, I really don’t think I would want to change anything that has happened to me in the past.

Tell us about the man in your life?

At the moment, there is no man in my life. I’m single and searching for a break out role (laughs).

Why still single, considering how beautiful you are?

Maybe I have not seen the right man.

So, who is your ideal man?

What attracts me to a man are his confidence and eloquence. I think a man who speaks well can turn me on. Then, he should have respect for himself and respect for women.

If you weren’t an actress, what else would you have been doing?

I’m very athletic; if I weren’t an actor, I would have been an athlete, running for Nigeria. I try every now and then (when I’m not on set) to go to the gym to work out. I also play volleyball and love watching football.

Apart from RMD, who again do you have a crush on?

If I were a lesbian, I would have loved to marry Scarlet Johansson. I also used to have a huge crush on Milan Bros. But now, it’s Mikel( Obi). But talking about my favourite actors, I think I love Ed Norton, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Natalie Portman.

It’s believed that most up and coming actresses trade their bodies for movie roles; what has been your response to ‘sex-for-role-directors’?

Firstly, one has to know what one wants in the industry. Then, how you present yourself also matters a lot and determines how you will be addressed. If you present yourself as a desperate young lady, who is ready to do anything and go to any length to get what she wants, then, you will fall into the trap and category of sex-for-roles actresses. Being a star is a gradual process, but that’s what most people don’t know. To be in the limelight is not a matter of days, but years of hard work. I’m not desperate; my good job will speak for me. I will wait for my time, so I say no to sex-for-roles!

Are you saying no producer has ever harassed you sexually?

No! Not at all! I’ve never been harassed. I guess it’s because of the way I carry myself. I know there are some men in the industry that can’t get their eyes off me, but I don’t give them the chance to go that far. Most of them don’t even have the confidence to tell me they want to sleep with me. So, it’s all about how you carry yourself! Once you do it once, it will circulate. Whoever you did it with will tell others and before you know it, everybody will want to sleep with you. And you will be giving in so as to get more roles; and if you don’t, that is where your problem may start from. That is how these things work. It’s better not to start it at all. I believe in letting my work speak for me. On the other hand, there are lots of responsible producers and directors who believe in merit.

As an actress, are you not scared that most famous actresses either don’t get married in time or their marriages don’t last?

I’m not scared because I’m a family-oriented person. On the other hand, it’s not just in Nollywood that we have broken marriages; it is everywhere. I believe in growing old with whoever I’m going to get married to and he has to be my best friend, so that whenever anything goes wrong, we’ll fix it rather than throwing away what we share.

  • Omotola turns marriage counsellor

    Omotola turns marriage counsellor

TOP Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde recently exposed her hitherto hidden skill, when she proved to be a marriage counsellor.

Having been married for 18 years, Omo Sexy, as she is fondly called by fans, reportedly said that every successful marriage is in the hand of the woman.

In a recent interview, the mother of four, who is also a singer, model, philanthropist, was quoted as saying that “I don’t believe in gender equality. I do not believe that God made man and woman to be equal in any way. I believe that in every organised institution, there is always a head and an assistant. It doesn’t mean that one should take the other for granted or disrespect the other.

“When a woman starts a struggle for power tussle with him, it tends to cause friction in the home. The woman should give the man the respect as the head of the home and also prove herself as a worthy co-pilot. He needs to see you as a reliable co-pilot… When you have a proud and egocentric husband, hand him over to God. If you feel like your life is being threatened or that of your children, get yourself out of that situation. You owe your children that.

“Try separation for a while, but before that, you must have tried other things. I do not believe that people should throw in the towel in their marriage at every flimsy excuse. You must have been a diligent wife and tried prayers and intervention. If all these fail, then, you can remove yourself from that situation. Also, couples should be friends and communicate. What we call love sometimes fizzles out. True love comes from friendship. When you don’t feel those initial sparks, friendship is what keeps you together, until when the spark comes again”.

    Omotola tours Ghandour Cosmetics’ facilities

NOLLYWOOD star actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, is currently on a tour of facilities at Ghandour Cosmetics Ltd, Ghana.

The visit was necessitated following her appointment as the face of the company’s BO-16, a hair care range of products.

The multimillion naira deal, signed earlier in the month, was witnessed by her manager, Michael Djaba, and Ali Jihami, Marketing Manager, Ghandour Cosmetics Ltd., at the Protea Hotel, Lagos.

  • Fan condemn Omotola’s new single

    Fan condemn Omotola’s new single

A hail of criticisms has continued to trail Nollywood star actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s singing ability, following the release of her new single, Barren Land, off her second album titled: Me, Myself and Eyes.

This came on the heels of her recent interview with CNN, where she was played up as a multi-talented actress, singer and philanthropist.

Though this is not the first time her songs have been be subjected to criticisms, the mother of four, unlike actress Genevieve Nnaji, has been unperturbed.

Interestingly, arguments on the social media have, however, shifted from a critical review of Omotola’s song, as fans of both actresses are now comparing their talents and celebrity status.

Genevieve appears to have given up singing, after her first album, One Logologo Line, turned out a commercial failure. In the views of her fans, the star actress had taken a right decision.

While commenting on Omotola’s latest single, a fan who faulted it for excessive auto tune and bad vocal, said, “I’m a huge fan of Omotola, but the song would have been better as instrumental (no vocals). Does she not have people around her to tell her she cannot sing and that she needs to stick to acting? Love you, Omosexy.”

Another fan was quoted to have said that “All I can hear is auto tune! After all these years of vocal lessons… Stick to acting alone, love.”

In the same vein, another fan said, “I love Omotola, but singing is not for everyone… If she was my mom, I would tell her NO! You can tell she can’t sing. So much auto tune; it is offbeat. And she is singing with her nose. I am crying of laughter as I am typing this. The song has a good message. Omowumi should have sung this, featuring MI. Even Genevieve’s I go kick you make you cry song was better than this (laughs).”

However, some believe that the fault is not totally that of the actress, but the producer’s.

“She (Omotola) should have gotten Cobhams to do the song for her. He is a terrific producer, especially for inspirational music or TY Bello’s Mosa ( Mosadoluwa Adegboye is the award-winning producer of TY Bello’s solo debut, Greenland). I don’t even live in Lagos and I know all these things,” said a fan.

In the view of another fan, though the beat used for Omotola’s song was fantastic, he wished that the song was sold to someone else to do justice to it. “And to think this is the song being used by Amnesty International. So, this is the song that was inspired by activism? I can’t even talk anymore…This auto tune tie ti je ki ori mi daru die (Yoruba for ‘the auto tune is driving me crazy’). Let me go and eat and regain my sanity biko,” he said.
