Ondo APC urges Buhari to dissolve NDDC board

The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to dissolve the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), following expiration of its tenure in December.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos by the state’s APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Abayomi Adesanya, the party said the tenure of the board expired in December after a four-year term.

APC said it frowned at what it called surreptitious moves by some “powerful persons at the Presidency” to elongate the tenure of the board beyond December 8, last year.

The statement said: “Any extension of the tenure of the board is unconstitutional and an attempt to give Cross River and Akwa Ibom states undue advantage of serving for continuous period of six years, as chairman and managing director, to the detriment of other member states.

“For the fact that it is the turn of Ondo State, as the fifth highest oil producing state in the country, to produce the next Managing Director of NDDC, President Muhammadu Buhari must compensate the people of Ondo State for their commitment to the Party (APC) and the victory of the President in the 2015 presidential election.

“It is on record that of all the nine oil producing states in Nigeria, it was only in Ondo State that President Muhammadu Buhari had an overwhelming victory in the 2015 presidential election, and we have not been so compensated.”

The party urged the President to dissolve the NDDC board and appoint loyal and committed members of the party as chairman from Delta State and managing director from Ondo State.

Ondo APC leaders know fate April

The Federal High Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, will, on April 17, deliver judgment in a suit challenging the selection of Ade Adetimehin as the Acting Chairman of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the suspension of Mr Isaacs Kekemeke as the party’s state chairman.

The plaintiffs – Messrs Gboyega Adedipe and Desmond Dejumola through their counsel, Olu Akinola – had approached the court to nullify the decisions taken at a meeting of the APC State Executive Council (SEC) where Kekemeke was suspended as the party’s chairman last year.

He noted that the meeting did not form a quorum.

Kekemeke was indicted by a disciplinary committee set up by the party’s SEC, earlier this year, for alleged anti-party affairs.

Counsel to Adetimehin and the APC, Femi Emodamori, argued that the two plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to institute the case because they had defected to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) while the duo had resigned as the party’s state Vice Chairman (Ondo Central) and the state Legal Adviser in 2016.

Emodamori prayed the court to dismiss the suit since the plaintiffs had also failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the APC executive meeting where Kekemeke was suspended was not properly constituted.

Lawyer to the first, second and third defendants, Charles Titiloye, also said the case lacked merit.

He prayed the court to see the plaintiffs as busybodies who left APC for another party and failed to join necessary parties in the matter.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to the plaintiffs, Akinola, argued that the disciplinary committee set up to investigate Kekemeke was unconstitutional.

The lawyer averred that the committee was not constituted in line with the party’s constitution.

Justice J. A. Olubanjo adjourned the matter till April 17 for judgement.

“Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is a fantastic chairman. He hates anti-party activities, imposition of candidates into any elective position, corruption and dictatorship,” he said.

They also praised the national chairman for his firm principles, pragmatic approach and belief in the strength of ordinary people.

Signed by the Chairman, Yoruba APC Unity Forum (YAPCUF), Alhaji Ganiyu Alao, the leaders applauded Odigie-Oyegun for showing remarkable enthusiasm for expansion and unity.

The leaders also dismissed the allegations against Odigie-Oyegun.

Henceforth, our party led-government would continue to bring more dividends of democracy to you and create an environment where everyone would thrive in their various human endeavours.

“As you know, our state’s economy has contracted in recent times due to the recession; many people are feeling the consequences, in terms of employment or income. However, our economic condition does not, on its own, define who we are.”

The ruling party expressed its determination to engage the state’s youths in positive endeavours for their future and the development of the state.

APC’s Acting Chairman Ade Adetimehin also said: “My major priority, as acting chairman of our great party, is to engage with and listen to our young people. Adetimehin said: “I have engaged with a lot of our members who left the party at a very critical period before the governorship election and with other progressive-minded people in the other political parties.

“I am glad to inform you that that initiative has yielded a positive response by boosting the membership of our great party with considerable number of our party members who left are returning.”

Leaders and major stakeholders in the 18 local government areas of Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of Mr Isaac Kekemeke as the party chairman in the state.

At a meeting yesterday in Akure, the state capital, the party stakeholders also expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and that of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in the interest of the ruling party.

They unanimously resolved to grant unconditional “amnesty” to party members who contested last year’s governorship election under other parties.

This development was hinged on the fallout of the party’s primary election, which produced the Akeredolu as APC’s candidate.

The meeting called for truce among aggrieved members to enable the party forge a common front at restoring the glory of the party in the Sunshine State and Nigeria.

Kekemeke said: “We are very conscious of the need to deliver more votes for President Buhari, more than we did in 2015. Although we thank God that we still won the 2016 governorship election, but the huge reduction in the votes scored by APC in the election has taught us the need to bring everybody on board for the good of APC in Ondo state.

“Therefore, all members who left the party in annoyance or became less active in the party because of the fallout of the last governorship election are hereby invited to return home to their party and are hereby granted unconditional amnesty with full rights and privileges as obtained before their brief departure.”

Ondo APC hails President’s commitment to unity

THE Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his stance on united and indivisible Nigeria.

Its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Abayomi Adesanya, spoke in an interview yesterday with reporters in Lagos after a nationwide broadcast by the President.

Ondo APC needs overhauling, says Elders Assembly

The Elders Assembly of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has called for a rejuvenation of the leadership of the ruling party, saying that is the key to its sustainability.

The party elders made the remark when they received the APC National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Pius Akinyelure, in Iju, Akure North Local Government. They added that the party needed a strong executive that would lead stakeholders to the next elections, particularly the presidential and National Assembly polls, which will come in less than two years time.

In a communiqué by its chairman, Senator Olorunnimbe Farukanmi, the group said the APC State Executive has been in disarray since last year’s governorship election.

They maintained that the party executive has shirked its responsibilities towards strengthening the administration of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

It said: “Following the outcome of the last governorship election, where Governor Akeredolu won 15 local government areas, leaving the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with only three local governments, it was evident that the voting strength of the APC was not depleted.

“In fact, after the poll, we appealed to the governor to try as much as possible to reconcile with all the contestants of the last primary, so that the APC would continue to support him.

“The APC leaders urged Akeredolu to look into the grievances of some members of the executive and take prompt action to bring about necessary solutions.”

The forum noted with dismay that in spite of the massive support given to President Muhammad Buhari during the 2015 election, the state has been neglected in the appointment into national positions. It urged leaders of the party in the Southwest to consult regularly with the elders in order to move the party forward.

  • Ondo APC acting chair resumes

Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Ade Adetimehin, resumed office yesterday as the party’s  substantive chairman.

The development, it was learnt, followed the non-resignation of the suspended chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, within the seven-day ultimatum recommended by the three-man probe panel set up to investigate alleged anti-party activities against him.

Adetimehin assured party faithful that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) would not disappoint the party and the residents.

The chairman described the governor as a principled man who would not play politics with issues that affect the people.

He hanged the portraits of President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun and Akeredolu in his office.

According to him, the ruling party is waxing stronger because of  the governor’s giant strides.

Adetimehin  said there was need to bring signs of good governance into the party, adding that APC must start making more impact.

He noted that the APC-led administration had embarked on many developmental projects, which were felt in the 18 local governments and the 203 wards in the state.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Mr Olumide Odimayo, who was abducted last Thursday, was found dead yesterday in Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

The late Odimayo was abducted by gunmen while returning from a trip.

It was learnt that his body  was found near Ogolo River, between Sabomi and Igbotu communities.

APC  State Publicity Secretary, Prince Abayomi Adesanya, who confirmed Odimayo’s death, said the incident had been reported to the police.

Adesanya said the body of the late politician was found by vigilantes, adding that the death had thrown the party into mourning.

The secretary said the late Odimayo contributed to the success of APC in the last governorship election.

He said: “He supported the party with all he had when he returned from the United Kingdom (UK). We will surely miss this great man.”

It was gathered that the late Odimayo returned from London shortly before he was abducted.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command had arrested eight suspects.

The spokesman said the police arrested the suspected kidnappers of the slain politician before his death.

He said efforts by the police and some youths led to the arrest of the suspects.

Joseph said: “The leader of the kidnap gang confessed to the police that Odimayo was in their custody. We discovered that the other kidnappers decided to throw him into the river when they knew that they were no longer safe.

“We felt so bad with the unfortunate incident and we are worried by the death of the politician after a successful operation. I can assure you that the suspects will face the full wrath of the law. Others in the abduction and subsequent killing of Odimayo will not go unpunished.”
