Drama as APC members reject PDP defectors in Ondo

Some members of the All Progressives Congress in Ogbagi Akoko Ward six have rejected members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who recently defected to the party.

The PDP defectors were led by Bobade Gboyega popularly known as Danger.

They described as unacceptable, null and void, the acceptance of the PDP defectors by some leaders of the party in the locality.

The Ogbagi APC leaders spoke when Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Community Engagement (Ondo North) Honourable Bode Obanla, visited the Ward as part of his fact finding and reconciliations to communities in Ondo North Senatorial district.

They said APC members were hoodwinked into accepting Bobade as a member of the party and vowed never to accept “Danger” into the APC.

Obanla, however informed them that he was at Ogbagi for an oversight function as well as initiate reconciliatory engagement to understudy the remote cause of the crises that led to the brutal attack on Hon Eli Awe, Akoko North West Local Government Director General, (DG )Aiyedatiwa Campaign.

He said the the attack on Awe would not be swept under the carpet.

Obanla said there was nothing to worry over the wrong signal and negative perception that acceptance of PDP defectors has caused.

    …Other suspects hospitalised

A farmer, identified as Adegoke, has reportedly beaten a suspected thief to death in Mile 10, Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area.

Several other suspects involved in the alleged theft were also injured in the attack and have been hospitalized.

Witnesses stated that Adegoke claimed the suspects had been stealing produce from his farm, including his motorcycle.

The suspected thieves were said to be from the neighboring Aba Tuntun community.

According to a source, “Some suspected thieves had been stealing the farm produces of one Adegoke, popularly called Ariya. But he had been keeping quiet for long.

“However, nemesis caught up with the thieves, as Adegoke was able to get hold of two persons out of four found on his farm.

“Before now, his Cocoa pods, Kola nuts, and plantains had been missing from his farm often and often, including his motorcycle. But he found two persons culpable of the offence.

“Adegoke beat the two persons to stupor, and in the process, they died. And that has led to intra-communal tension in the area.”

Adegoke was subsequently arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Akure for investigation.

Ondo Police spokesman, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said the complainant claimed the suspected thieves were around Adegoke farm to pick snails and not to steal.

She said it was the wife of Adegoke that called her husband that thieves were in his farm and he returned to attack them.

The Police spokesman said investigation was still ongoing.

  • Ondo, Edo and APC’s electoral future

Ondo, Edo and APC’s electoral future

Last Wednesday, the national chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mamman Mike Osuman, declared that the group would back northern candidates in the 2027 elections. Except the media reported him unfairly and inaccurately, he was ambiguous in approximating the northern socio-cultural group’s preferences. He referenced the Bola Tinubu administration’s unpopular policies and the hardship and hunger inundating the country, but he was careful not to specify names disfavoured by the ACF nor offices they might wish to contest. Though the Forum’s Board of Trustees suspended him a day later for making unathorised statement on behalf of the group, he had given dark hints about the direction the ACF might head some two years down the line. Said Mr Osuman, a lawyer and senior advocate, with flourish: “…It is not in doubt that the North is currently under siege. Our dear region is not only being viciously attacked by bandits, terrorists and kidnappers but also by sinister devices like disproportionate considerations and inequitable treatment.”

In the fortuitous months ahead, it is unlikely the old political North will see the Bola Tinubu presidency the same way they see it today. Apart from the president indulging the region beyond measure, it is also expected that the badly bruised and battered economy might begin to turn the corner. To that extent, the ACF’s BoT was probably sensible and more restrained in not declaring support for any aspirant or party. They may sometimes be instigative in their speeches, but they often wait to see which way the cat jumps before they cast their lot with a candidate. Nothing of course suggests they won’t eventually ditch President Tinubu, but they are unlikely to do so as spontaneously and peremptorily as Mr Osuman has ill-advisedly done. Sometimes too, the old North criticises and threatens as a form of pressure to get more concession from any presidency constituted by a southerner. Whatever their ultimate aim, the ACF chairman probably let the cat out of the bag too soon. He was unlikely to have voiced sentiments not prevalent among northern leaders, but it will still take more than a year before the old North’s definitive view on 2027 is known.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is probably aware of the electoral booby traps ahead of it, whether placed by northerners, or other regions, or even by enemies within. They may in fact already be toying with various countermeasures defeat the enemy and hold on to power beyond 2027. This is where their victories in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections put them in a quandary. If they had lost either or both states in the September and November polls, it would have been seen as a perfect and karmic referendum on the Tinubu administration, particularly its hated economic measures and probably despised appointments, with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) buoyed by the ruling party’s setbacks. The conundrum, unfortunately for the APC, is that its victories in the two states have been conveniently explained away as signifying no referendum on the Tinubu administration. Analysts often take solace in the axiom that all politics is local. This may sound trite, but it adequately explains the two recent governorship elections as far as the APC is concerned.

In the Edo poll, the APC was largely united and focused on returning to office, while the PDP was disunited, with the former governor, Godwin Obaseki, calling everybody’s bluff. The APC put the matter beyond contention by winning 11 local government areas and 291,667 votes to PDP’s seven LGs and 247,274 votes, a significant 44,000 plus margin. In Ondo, the APC victory was even more emphatic, with its candidate, the untested and sometimes flighty Lucky Aiyedatiwa, winning all 18 local governments and over 360,000 votes to the PDP’s 117,845 votes. Taking together with the November 2023 reelection of APC’s Hope Uzodinma in Imo State and APC’s Usman Ododo election in Kogi State also in November 2023, President Tinubu can boast four trophies that came seemingly against the run of play. Had those victories come with the run of play, with a great and revving economy, no one would have doubted the unassailable position of the president going into the 2027 poll. It would, however, make the administration complacent, for officials love burying their heads in the cloud rather than having them singed in the cauldron of public anger and criticism. President Tinubu’s men should, therefore, probably count themselves lucky that the administration and the public are unable to attribute the recent electoral triumphs to anything spectacular done by the administration.

Indeed, if elections were held today, given the state of the economy (petrol price, exchange rate and inflation), the supposed skewness of the president’s appointments in favour of the Yoruba, particularly Lagosians, and the awkward reversals of certain policies and close staff appointments, the president and his APC would be hard put to eke out even a slim victory. If in addition the opposition could get their act together and rally behind a great candidate, defeating the APC would be almost certain. Fortunately for the ruling party, few voters are likely to make up their minds how to vote in 2027 until probably late next year or sometime in 2026. President Tinubu has of course not inspired too many people by his style of administration, but he has sensibly pushed the country through its worst moments early in his government in order to give himself some breathing space in the years ahead, especially close to the polls. If he is fortunate enough to have an economy well on the path of recovery in 2025, with exchange rate, fuel price, and inflation rate doing great, he will sound more plausible and convincing in pushing the APC agenda.

The relentlessly rhetorical National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, last week pontificated on President Tinubu’s invincibility. He of course exaggerated, and indeed sounded ingratiating. But while the president is good at keeping many balls in the air, two major factors will determine the shape of 2027. One is the shape of the economy in the next 18 months and how smartly the president cleans up his controversial and mystifying appointments, and two is the shape of the political opposition, taken holistically. Should the opposition remain fragmented and bad-tempered in the next 18 months as it is today, it would head nowhere, whether with the superficial Peter Obi as a point man or the bilious Atiku Abubakar as the leprous fist. The two factors stated above were at play in the Edo and Ondo polls; they will greatly influence the course and outcomes of politics and elections in the years ahead. Even if the economy does not recover as significantly as many Nigerians hope, President Tinubu and his APC will probably still do much better than expected should the opposition remain divided and mediocre. But two years is still a long time off, enough time to dig heels in, make amends, or build new platforms and coalitions.

  • Ondo’s governorship victory was free of external influence, says APC Ganduje

Ondo’s governorship victory was free of external influence, says APC Ganduje

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has affirmed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s victory in the Ondo State governorship election was achieved without interference from the presidency or any external forces.

Ganduje made this statement on Wednesday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja while receiving Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented them with their certificates of return.

The APC Chairman in Ondo state also declared that the party’s resounding victory in the state marked the political demise of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Expressing his joy, Ganduje highlighted that the party’s triumph in 202 out of 203 wards demonstrated its overwhelming acceptance by the people of Ondo state.

“This must be an issue that was embraced by all. You enjoyed the support of the electorates in the state. We have to congratulate you on this landslide victory. I know Ondo people are progressives which was why they will cooperate with you,” he stated while felicitating with Aiyedatiwa and his Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, and party chieftains from Ondo state.

Ganduje said Aiyedatiwa’s victory would not have been made possible but for the eventual unity of purpose and harmonious relationship amongst party chieftains in the state.

The chairman who then expressed optimism that the party would sustain its winning streak after the end of Aiyedatiwa’s tenure in office, advised the governor to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Late Rotimi Akeredolu.

He also enjoined Aiyedatiwa to ensure the even spread of developmental projects and avoid falling into the trap of abandonment of projects in the state.

Expressing gratitude to the party leadership and electorates in the state for his victory at the polls, Gov. Aiyedatiwa assured the people of his state that his victory has placed a burden of service on him.

Adducing the victory recorded by the APC in Ondo and Edo states to Ganduje’s track record of mobilisations, and strategic planning as a politician of repute in the country, the governor said that the party was set to win Osun State.

He said: “I cannot but come here to appreciate party the platform that gave me the opportunity to run the race. Come here to stop over to thank you. It’s not a case of being disrespectful not to present my certificate of return to you, but to wait for the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The people of Ondo state knew who they wanted and voted for integrity, continuity, and good leadership that we represent with the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President.

“That was what happened when we attained a feat never achieved before. We won in every local government in the state. With the election, the Ondo people spoke clearly and loudly that they voted for APC represented by myself.

“We served within the last 10 months and people have seen the way to go. We made promises and with the massive votes the people gave to us, they have placed a burden on us to do more than what did in the last 10 months. After we end our service, the APC will take over from us again to ensure the name of our party will be intact.”

Earlier the State Chairman of APC, Engr. Ade Adetimehin said the outcome of the November 16 governorship election in the state has finally nailed the coffin of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

“We have delivered as you directed. The delivery is so large that we broke the record in the state. Since the inception of democratic elections in Ondo State, no Governorship candidate ever won in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

“This shows that our party is loved by the people of the state. Ours is a progressive state. Our people love our national leader, President Bola Tinubu and we believe in the leadership of our governor, Hon. Lucky Orimsan Aiyedatiwa.”

The chairman then assured the national leadership that, “I want to assure you that we will not disappoint you. We will strengthen the party and make it the largest in the state because we have finally killed PDP in Ondo State.

“Before the election, a large shrunk of PDP leadership defected to APC. The outcome of the election has shown the whole world that there is no PDP in Ondo State

Ondo loses appeal on N30m compensation for amputee

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has dismissed the appeal filed by the Ondo State Government against a judgment from the Ondo State High Court, which awarded a compensation of N30 million to Oluwasegun Oluwarotimi.

Oluwarotimi had his leg amputated in 2021 after being shot by an operative from the Ondo State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps.

In her judgment delivered in March 2023, Justice Omolara Adejumo awarded N30 million in damages against the Ondo State Government and the Amotekun Corps in favour of Oluwarotimi.

The court condemned the illegal shooting that resulted in the amputation of his leg, leaving him reliant on crutches for mobility.

Counsel for Oluwarotimi, Tope Temokun, had challenged the appeal’s validity by filing a notice of preliminary objection.

In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, Justice Oyebisi Folayemi Omoleye agreed that the notice of appeal submitted by the Ondo State Government was incompetent.

As a result, the appeal was struck out, and the court ordered the Ondo State Government to pay a cost of N250,000.

Temokun stated that he had written to the state government, urging compliance with the High Court’s judgment.

He said he reminded the Ondo State government that it was against public policy to use state resources to prosecute an appeal against a vulnerable citizen who is now an amputee, after being shot by a government agency.

Ondo victory: APC will remain in power for a long time – Ganduje

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has predicted that the party’s growing acceptance in the country is an indication that it will be in power for a long time.

Ganduje’s prediction was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Sunday in Abuja, while reacting to the re-election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state.

The elated APC national chairman said the outcome of the elections in Edo and Ondo States was an indication that Nigerians have embraced the ruling party.

“Recent victories by the party in Edo and Ondo States were not a fluke but an attestation that Nigerians have embraced the APC as their party, assuring that the party will remain in power for a very long time.”

The Chairman noted that Aiyedatiwa’s remarkable success last weekend was a testament to the trust and confidence the people of Ondo State have in his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their well-being.

He added: “Ayedatiwa’s victory is not just a win for the APC but a triumph for democracy and the enduring will of the people.”

Ganduje said the election was a clear reflection of the collective aspirations of the good people of the state, who have chosen continuity, progress, and development over retrogression.

Ondo: BVAS not capturing elderly, INEC responds

A Presiding Officer, Miss Angela Oshogwe, at the ongoing governorship election in Ondo State has said that the Bio modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine could not capture the faces of some elderly voters.

Oshogwe, manning Poling Unit 19, Ward 11 Olamojuba, Ondo in Ondo West Local Government Area of the state, said that she had lodged the complaints to the concerned authorities.

She added that the response she got was that the complaint was not limited to her polling unit, stating that the elderly had been waiting for long to vote without success.

According to her, there is the possibility of the BVAS to function before the close of voting.

Reacting to the complaint, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the commission was aware of the development in “very limited” polling units

“We are aware that in very limited cases, a few elderly voters couldn’t be accredited by the BVAS at first attempt. But, in subsequent attempts, the problem was resolved.

“A Presiding Officer in one polling unit (PU) out of 3,933 PUs in Ondo State is not in the position to say how widespread a technical problem is.

“From the reports at our disposal, so far, the BVAS is performing satisfactorily. It is not unusual for technical issues to occur in a major off-season election like the one we are conducting today.

Olapade said she had been at the polling unit, with other affected elderly voters, since 8:00 a.m. without being able to vote.

According to her. she voted in the previous elections without any difficulty.

Similarly, Mrs Rukayat Olawoye, 87 years old, said that she came out because of the voting but was disappointed at the difficulty occasioned by the BVAS.

Heavy security as 1,793,914 Ondo voters decide

There is heavy security presence in Akure, the Ondo State capital and other adjoining towns as electorates prepare to elect a new Governor.

The choices before Ondo electorates are Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) and Hon Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Out of 2,053,061 registered voters in the State, a total of 1,793,914 electorates who collected their Permanent Voter Cards are expected to cast their votes on Saturday.

This was unlike in the 2020 governorship election when there were 1,478,460 eligible voters in Ondo State.

Checks showed that a total of 58,708 new voters were registered in Ondo State while 3,132 voters transferred their registration into and within Ondo State, while 123 voters transferred their registration within and out of Ondo State.

Sensitive materials for the conduct of the election were distributed to the local government areas under heavy security and closely monitored by party agents.

This is the first election in Ondo State where minimal violence was recorded ahead of the election unlike in previous elections.

There were no reported cases of attack on billboards or clash of supporters during campaigns. It was at Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area, that seven members of the opposition PDP were hospitalised after they were reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs.

To foster any violence during the election, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbedokun deployed 22, 239 policemen to be supported by 8,500 personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Speaking on the security deployment, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abiodun Alabi, said the police were prepared to provide level playing ground for all contesting candidates irrespective of party affiliation or status

as well ensured secured environment for successful and peaceful conduct of elections throughout the state.

Alabi said there would be provision of adequate security for election officials and materials from all ”take-off” points to their respective destinations.

He said the police would “Ensure that all participants and other citizens comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act of 2020 as amended and other statute laws of the Federation.

“We will render all necessary assistance to INEC officials to facilitate the discharge of their responsibilities and provide adequate contingency plans to contain any crisis that may directly or indirectly arise before, during or after the conduct of the election.

Alabi said all arrested electoral offenders would be prosecuted accordingly.
