Kidnap, cult-suspects, livestock thieves nabbed in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled no fewer than 13 suspected criminal gangs allegedly involved in various crimes across the state.

Parading the suspects over the weekend in Akure, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, said the arrests were part of sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements engaging in cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, cyber fraud, and livestock theft.

According to him, the suspects were rounded up during coordinated operations that spanned the Owo, Akoko, Ondo, and Akure areas, leading to the recovery of firearms, stolen property, and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

Lawal said that on October 26, operatives stormed Ipele in Owo Local Government Area and apprehended two suspected cultists for alleged involvement in cult and armed robbery activities.

A pump-action gun was recovered from the suspects, who confessed to belonging to a notorious cult group known as the Malians Club, with about ten active members. The gang operated from a hideout along Ipele Road, where they held meetings and planned their operations,” he stated.

The police commissioner added that efforts were ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

In another operation, CP Lawal revealed that the anti-kidnapping unit of the police command engaged a group of bandits in a fierce gun duel along the Oka–Akungba axis.

“One of the kidnappers was neutralised while others escaped with gunshot wounds. Two locally-made pistols and expended cartridges were recovered. All three victims were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families,” Lawal said.

Army hails Aiyedatiwa for response to terror alert in Ondo

The Nigerian Army, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Ondo State, has commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa-led administration for its swift response to the recent security alert over a planned terrorist attack on some parts of the State.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had raised the alarm about an imminent attack on Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The warning was contained in a memo dated October 20, 2025 to the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure.

According to the memo signed by H. I. Kana, Director of the DSS in Ondo State, “Intelligence confirmed plans by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.”

Commending Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Major Njoka Irabor, noted that the governor’s prompt action in convening an emergency security meeting and directing all security agencies to be on full alert demonstrated his commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens.

Major Irabor, who spoke during an official visit to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, in Akure on Thursday, expressed appreciation to the state government for its continuous support to the military and other security formations.

He recalled that the Governor recently presented utility vehicles and other operational equipment to security agencies to enhance their efficiency and operational readiness across the state.

According to him, the synergy between the state government and security agencies has contributed greatly to the relative peace being enjoyed in Ondo State.

He pledged the Nigerian Army’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to ensure that Ondo remains a safe and stable environment for residents and investors.

Remarking, Ajanaku commended the Army for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the people of the state from attacks.

He assured that the Ministry of Information and Orientation would continue to support the military and other security agencies through effective information dissemination and public enlightenment.

Ajanaku also emphasised the importance of public vigilance, urging citizens to report any suspicious or unlawful activities in their communities to the appropriate authorities.

He noted that timely intelligence from the public plays a vital role in helping the government and security agencies prevent criminal acts and maintain peace.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Aiyedatiwa administration’s dedication to a secure and prosperous Ondo State, stressing that collaboration, vigilance, and communication remain key to sustaining peace and development.

Expectant woman, nine others die in Ondo fatal crash

A tragic accident in Akungba Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, claimed the lives of ten people on Wednesday night, including an expectant woman.

The accident occurred near the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), when a Dangote Cement truck reportedly lost control and veered off its lane, ploughing into bystanders along the roadside.

The Nation report that the incident, which took place near the Holy Trinity Church, has plunged the university community and residents into mourning.

Eyewitnesses said the truck, coming from Obajana in Kogi State, allegedly broke through a barricade erected to prevent articulated vehicles from accessing the university road – a measure initially implemented to prevent such tragedies.

“The trailer came from the top of the hill. It’s unclear if the barricade was opened or if it was forcefully broken. At least 10 people were killed, and we’re unsure how many more might still be under the truck,” an eyewitnesses said.

It was gathered that emergency responders and security operatives rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and recover bodies trapped under the vehicle.

President of the AAUA Students’ Union Government (SUG), Salami Olugbon, described the accident as “unfortunate” and expressed frustration over repeated warnings about the dangers of allowing trucks access through the area.

“No student died in the incident, but it’s disheartening that this happened due to the negligence of some individuals responsible for managing the barricades. There’s been ongoing sabotage from some locals,” Olugbon said.

“The Dangote truck, reportedly suffering brake failure, broke through the permanent barricade erected at the university’s main gate. This is a painful reminder of why we have long called for articulated vehicles to stop plying Akungba roads,” he added.

He urged students to remain calm and avoid the highway for now, assuring that the union will continue to work to ensure the safety of the student community.

Confirming the crash, Ondo State FRSC Sector Commander, Samuel Ibitoye, said eight deaths had been officially recorded so far – five males, two females, and a male child.

“The truck, which was loaded with cement, lost control and rammed into pedestrians. It was a result of the driver’s recklessness,” Ibitoye said.

The road where the incident occurred had previously been modified with barricades under the administration of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, following a series of deadly accidents involving heavy-duty trucks in the area.

We’re working with DSS, Police, Army to prevent ‘terror attacks’ in Ondo, Aiyedatiwa assures

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called on the residents of the State to remain calm and not panic over reports of a possible “terrorist attack,” assuring that his administration is working closely with all relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

Aiyedatiwa, in a statement on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said his administration was in constant communication with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Army to forestall any form of security breach in the state.

This comes after a leaked memo from the DSS indicated that suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) were planning coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and neighbouring Kogi State.

The confidential memo, dated October 20, 2025 to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, warned that intelligence reports had confirmed plans by ISWAP operatives to strike simultaneously at selected locations in the two states.

Signed by H.I. Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security, the memo identified Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West LGA and Owo town in Owo LGA of the state among the potential targets.

According to the document, the terrorist group had already commenced surveillance on “soft targets” in the affected areas, urging the military to heighten security vigilance.

“The groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations. Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation,” the memo stated.

But Aiyedatiwa said his government was already aware of the security alert and had taken proactive steps to safeguard residents, especially those in border communities.

Aiyedatiwa said security has been beefed up across the state, particularly in identified flashpoints, while surveillance and intelligence gathering efforts have been intensified.

“The Ondo State Government, led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is in constant contact with security agencies and is taking several steps to protect residents, especially those in border communities, so that Ondo State can remain one of the safest states in the country,” the statement reads.

The Governor further advised residents to avoid panic, go about their normal activities, and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security formation.

“Once again, we appeal to residents to remain calm, go about their normal daily activities, refrain from taking laws into their hands, and provide any information that may help prevent any threat in any part of the state,” it added.

The statement clarified that the leaked memo was part of routine intelligence-sharing among security agencies and government authorities, describing such communications as a standard practice in preventing threats.

“These intelligence reports often contain varying levels of threat assessment and are used in joint operations by security agencies to enhance vigilance and take proactive measures,” it noted.

The government reaffirmed that the state government and security operatives were fully engaged in ensuring that the safety and peace of the state were not compromised.

“The public can be assured that these reports are being acted upon, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure safety and security,” the statement said.

“The emphasis remains on maintaining vigilance and cooperation between security agencies and the government to prevent and respond to any potential threats.”

The alert comes three years after suspected ISWAP militants carried out a deadly attack on a Catholic church in Owo, killing more than 40 worshippers during Sunday mass.

In recent months, security experts have voiced concerns over the spread of terrorist activities into parts of southern Nigeria, after years of insurgent violence that had been largely confined to the country’s Northeast.

The warning was contained in a memo dated October 20, 2025 to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure.

A copy of the memo, signed by Hi Kana, the Ondo State Director of Security, was obtained by The Nation on Tuesday in Akure.

The memo reads in part: “Intelligence confirmed plans by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.”

According to the security alert, the targeted areas include Eriti-Akoko and Oyin-Akoko communities in Akoko North West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area.

The DSS urged the military authorities to intensify surveillance and security operations across the identified flashpoints to prevent any potential attack.

“The terrorist elements have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations. Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation,” the memo warned.

The alert comes three years after suspected ISWAP gunmen attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, leaving over 40 worshippers dead.

Security analysts have in recent times expressed concern over the gradual infiltration of terror elements into parts of the South, after years of insurgent activities concentrated mainly in the North-East region.

Ondo youths demand sack of NDDC board member over alleged misconduct

    • ’They don’t deserve my response’

The Coalition of Oil Producing Youths of Ondo State (COPYOS) has called for the removal of Otito Ehinmore, the state’s representative on the board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.

The group made the demand in a petition addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, dated October 15.

In the petition by over 30 youth leaders from the state’s oil-producing mandate areas, COPYOS gave President Tinubu a two-week ultimatum to sack Ehinmore, accusing him of nepotism, financial mismanagement and poor representation of Ondo State in NDDC.

The petitioners alleged that since his appointment, ‘’Ehinmore has turned  Ondo State seat on the NDDC board into a ghost position,” depriving the state of visibility, representation and development projects.’’

“We, the undersigned Coalition of Youth Movements and Stakeholders from the oil-producing areas of Ondo State, rise in unity to demand the removal of Ehinmore from the NDDC board,” the petition read in part.

“Our position is driven by deep disappointment and betrayal. Since his appointment, Ehinmore has consistently demonstrated disconnection, irresponsibility and self-serving conduct that grossly undermines the mandate of the NDDC and the trust of the people of Ondo State.”

The group further alleged that Ehinmore allocated the only four NDDC employment slots meant for the state’s oil-producing communities to his immediate family members — identified as Dare Ehinmore, Dayo Ehinmore, Babatunde Ehinmore and Taye Stella Olayemi.

They also accused him of diverting funds earmarked for the 2023 and 2024 NDDC Youth Empowerment Programmes and of failing to engage key stakeholders, youth groups and traditional rulers in Ilaje and Ese-Odo local governments — the state’s main oil-producing zones.

“Ehinmore has been completely invisible and unavailable in all oil-producing communities of Ondo State since assuming office,” the group alleged. “He has failed to initiate or attract any meaningful development projects, nor has he created any avenue for interaction with the people he represents.”

The coalition said its agitation was not politically-motivated, but a call for effective representation and accountability in the management of NDDC affairs as they affected Ondo State.

They warned that failure by the presidency to act within the stipulated two-week period would compel them to mobilise mass protests and shut down NDDC-related activities in the state.

“We will not continue to be silent spectators while our region suffers from neglect and misrepresentation. The time for change is now,” the petitioners declared.

However, in a swift reaction, Ehinmore dismissed the allegations as politically- motivated, saying he was unbothered by the call for his removal.

“They don’t deserve my response. If the President removes me, I will go to my house,” he said.

  • Councillors suspend Ondo council chair over alleged fraud

Councillors suspend Ondo council chair over alleged fraud

Owo Local Government Secretariat in Ondo State was thrown into confusion on Tuesday, as councillors suspended the Chairman, Tope Omolayo, over allegations of financial impropriety and misconduct.

The suspension letter was signed by 11 councillors under the House Leader, Doyin Adebayo. The councillors accused Omolayo of financial irregularities, gross violation of statutory budget and internally generated revenue (IGR) regulations, disrespect for traditional rulers and failure to conduct himself appropriately.

In the letter, the councillors said they would conduct a transparent and an impartial investigation into the allegations, assuring the public of fairness throughout the process.

But Omolayo has kicked against his suspension, describing the councillors as jesters.

Following the suspension, the lawmakers unanimously appointed the council’s Vice Chairman, Hamed Ibrahim, as acting chairman.

“The council assures the good people of Owo Local Government that this suspension is necessary to ensure good governance and accountability. We urge stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative as we work towards resolving the issues at hand,” the letter read in part.

The councillors directed the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA) to effect changes in the council’s bank signatories, recognising Ibrahim as the acting chairman.

They ordered Omolayo to hand over council’s belongings in his possession to the HLGA.

“The Legislative Council remains committed to serving the people of Owo Local Government and assures them of good governance and accountability,’’ the statement said.

Omolayo’s suspension comes barely a month after he raised the alarm that local government chairmen in the state had access to only N5 million monthly, despite receiving larger allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

He alleged that a major portion of council funds was being centrally managed under a joint account system, limiting councils’ ability to carry out their statutory responsibilities.

Omolayo dismissed the suspension as baseless and politically-motivated.

He said: “They are elements of destruction. I didn’t receive any letter from them, we didn’t even argue. But I knew there were some leaders who were not happy with what we were doing. When I asked them what their bone of contention was, someone said it was for me to stop all security activities in Owo.

“All they wanted was for me to give them money. When they gave me project money, they said I should give them 30 per cent. I said no. They said I should go and bring N25 million. All they were agitating for was money.’’

Omolayo insisted he remained in control of the council.

“As far as we are concerned, nothing is happening. I’ve not been impeached. I’ve not been suspended. Nothing is happening. It’s just an online kangaroo announcement. That’s all I can say now,” he said.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the tragic incident occurred on October 7 around 5:30 p.m., and was reported by one Ngozi Gregory at the Idanre Divisional Police Headquarters.

Ayanlade said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect engaged the deceased in an argument over the repayment of money he had earlier borrowed from her.

Lawal directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for a comprehensive probe.
