Bandits abduct tipper driver, motor boy escapes in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the abduction of a tipper driver, identified as Tobi Abdulmalik Oluwatuyi, at Ilu Abo, in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

Oluwatuyi was reportedly kidnapped by suspected armed men in the early hours of Friday.

Confirming the incident, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said the victim was seized by the gunmen after his truck developed a fault along the Akure/Owo Highway, leading to the Ilu Abo community.

According to him, while the driver was making efforts to fix the faulty truck, the assailants suddenly emerged from the bush and dragged him away at gunpoint.

Adeleye added that the driver’s assistant, popularly known as a motor boy, managed to escape and quickly alerted the owner of the truck, Monday Ayesoro.

The Amotekun commander further disclosed that operatives of the corps, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, have launched an intensive bush-combing operation to rescue the victim.

“We are already combing the forest and have blocked the routes leading to Ise- in Ekiti State to prevent the kidnappers from escaping. We are on top of the situation and determined to secure the victim’s release,” Adeleye assured.

The latest abduction at Ilu Abo has heightened fears among locals that criminal gangs are operating with increasing boldness in Akure North LGA.

Amid the ugly development, community leaders and traders have increased calls for stepped-up patrols, better intelligence-sharing, and immediate action from both state security outfits and the police to prevent more attacks.

Nigeria Union of Tailors (NUT) and Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (ACCOMORAN) have declared their commitment to ensure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

They said they were spurred by the exemplary leadership of Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The pledge was made during a meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Movement for Tinubu in Ondo State, led by Coordinator Otunba Agboola Kelly, in Akure.

The two groups resolved to mobilise their members to secure a decisive victory for Tinubu, driven by their admiration for Tunji-Ojo’s transformative contributions to national governance.

Comrade Akinlolu Olumorin, representing ACCOMORAN, decried the group’s marginalisation by Ondo State Government.

“Ondo is the only state where ACCOMORAN is denied operational recognition. The government employs thugs to sell tickets to Okada riders, sidelining our members,” he said.

‘’When Otunba Agboola Kelly called for our support for President Tinubu’s re-election, we were initially sceptical, but we were inspired by the remarkable achievements of our esteemed son, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

‘’His innovative reforms as Minister of Interior have motivated us to dedicate our efforts to ensuring Tinubu’s success in 2027.’’

Similarly, Nigeria Union of Tailors has affirmed its determination to rally its members across Ondo State to deliver overwhelming support to Tinubu.

Representing thousands of tailors and motorcycle riders, NUT and ACCOMORAN are leveraging their extensive grassroots networks to drive voter engagement.

“We have implicit confidence in Tunji-Ojo’s leadership, and this has cemented our resolve to make Tinubu’s re-election a done deal.

“Our efforts signal a formidable boost to the APC’s campaign, ensuring a strong foundation for victory in 2027.”

    Ondo hails grassroots transformation

Ondo State Government has expressed delight about what it described as the rapid transformation taking place across the 18 local governments.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, said this in Akure while briefing reporters after an inspection tour of local governments.

He said councils under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration had recorded “phenomenal progress” with the provision of basic amenities such as improved road networks, rural road expansion, market upgrades and empowerment programmes for farmers and youths.

He hailed the council chairmen for aligning with the governor’s Our Ease Mantra and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, citing achievements in infrastructure, health care, education and economic development.

“We are glad that the local governments are alive to their responsibilities. Some have built markets, provided solar power, potable water, fixed bridges and graded rural roads. They have also engaged our youths in agriculture to ensure food security and create employment,” Takuro said.

According to him, ‘’the councils have invested in critical infrastructure, including dredging waterways, clearing drainages and grading roads, to prevent flooding.’’

Takuro said council chairmen had been working with the Ministry of Environment, with a technical adviser appointed by the governor to address perennial flooding.

He said 18 local governments had jointly saved about N15 billion to fund capital projects in their domains.

He recalled that the government had partnered with anti-graft and anti-corruption agencies to train council bosses and senior officials in transparency and accountability in revenue generations in the local governments.

    Ondo monarch escapes assassination attempt

The Olugoba of Igoba Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba John Adinlewa, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, The Nation can report.

The incident occurred during a cultural festival when a group of armed hoodlums invaded the monarch’s palace, wielding firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, with the intent to wreak havoc.

Sources disclosed that the attackers, who stormed the community in commando style, violently assaulted the monarch, his wife and several indigenes.

Properties worth millions were reportedly destroyed in the chaos.

Confirming the attack in a statement on Saturday, the spokesman for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said ten suspects have been apprehended in connection with the assassination attempt.

Ayanlade stated that while the royal father narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault, one of his chiefs, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo was severely injured and dispossessed of her belongings during the attack.

According to him: “Upon receipt of the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, promptly deployed all necessary operational assets and manpower to the area. Items recovered from the suspects include two locally fabricated pistols, one single-barrel gun, several rounds of live ammunition, assorted charms, knives, machetes, and other dangerous weapons used during the attack.

Ayanlade also disclosed that injured victims are currently receiving treatment and responding positively, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

  • Ondo cleric, Govt trade words over ‘poor condition’ of roads

Ondo cleric, Govt trade words over ‘poor condition’ of roads

Popular Ondo cleric, Prophet Samson Oluwamodede of the Prayer Centre Church of God (PCCG), and the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa-led administration have clashed over the ‘poor condition’ of roads, particularly in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.

In a viral video by his church on Thursday, Prophet Oluwamodede lamented the worsening state of the Akure/Idanre (Oke Aro) road, describing it as a death trap for motorists.

He alleged that several lives and vehicles had been lost due to the deplorable condition of the road, which he said had become nearly impassable.

“Mr Governor (Aiyedatiwa), you remember there was a time I called your attention to how bad the road is, and you promised to contact your S.A. on Infrastructure.

“But the road is now worse. If you see how people are dying on that road, particularly at Owe Akala, Idanre garage, and Abiodun junction to the new town area, it is terrible. Many commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) are dying, lorries continue to fall, injuring people and destroying goods,” the cleric lamented.

Oluwamodede, who said he had made several failed attempts to reach the Governor, added that if nothing was done by Sunday, he would mobilsee resources to carry out ‘surface repairs’ on the road himself to avoid further embarrassment.

“I’m calling your attention to the road, Mr Governor, because we still have the confidence in you. Do something now because the road is very bad. Painfully, this is happening within the street of Akure. I wish the governor could try and drive down to see what we are facing here. Please, Mr. Governor, I am calling your attention to the bad road.

“I have witnessed the administrations of Governors Olusegun Agagu, Olusegun Mimiko, late Rotimi Akeredolu, and now you (Aiyedatiwa) is the fourth. I want you to make a difference. This is not about politics but the suffering of people. If I don’t see action, I will bring in a grader for surface dressing,” he stressed.

The Nation report that the Akure/Idanre road leads directly to Prophet Oluwamodede’s expansive church.

However, in a swift response, the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Mr Ayorinde Abiola Olawoye, attributed the delay in the project to incessant rainfall, noting that construction is a gradual process with defined stages.

“At Oke Aro, the contractor, who began work less than six months ago, has already achieved over 8,000 meters of lined drains – about 4km out of the 10km stretch. This is an impressive milestone in such a short time,” he said.

Olawoye explained that road construction begins with hydraulic works like drains and culverts, followed by earthworks and then pavement structure, stressing that skipping stages would compromise quality.

“While the concerns raised by the prophet are valid, incessant rainfall has made grading or palliative works impossible. Such measures in the rainy season would worsen the situation. Now that rains are subsiding, the contractor has commenced palliative works to ease movement pending the completion of the full project,” he added.

Aiyedatiwa in April flagged off the dualisation of the 10-kilometre Akure-Idanre road.

The project, designed to ease heavy traffic and boost economic activities, will feature a 28-metre-wide carriageway, modern traffic systems, and solar-powered streetlights.

Toddlers, three others die in Ondo crash

A road accident has claimed five lives, including two children, on the Akure/Ado highway along Iju/Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The ghastly crash, which occurred on Sunday, involved a commercial bus loaded with passengers and a truck in a head-on collision after the driver of the bus reportedly lost control.

Eyewitnesses said that the victims died on the spot with their lifeless bodies seen lying by the roadside.

Both drivers were trapped in the vehicles while other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

One of the witnesses, Adeola Igbekele, described the scene as horrific, blaming the tragedy on reckless driving.

“It was a sad scene. The drivers were too reckless on the road. Sadly, five persons, including two toddlers, died in the crash. It took the timely arrival of emergency vehicles and personnel to rescue the remaining passengers,” Igbekele said.

The accident caused heavy gridlock on the busy highway until motorists and residents helped to rescue survivors before emergency responders arrived.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, attributed the crash to excessive speeding.

Ibitoye said the corps had evacuated the remains of the victims – two males and three females – and deposited them at the morgue of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, the state capital.

Police rescue four-year-old sold for N3.7m in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a child trafficking syndicate operating across Ondo, Delta and Anambra states, rescuing a missing four-year-old girl in the process.

In a statement yesterday, the Command’s spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade said the case began on February 3, 2025 when one Sunday Kingsley of Alagbaka Extension, Akure reported that his daughter, Jesinta Sunday, went missing while in the care of her mother, Happiness.

Ayanlade said the matter was initially charged before the Family Magistrate Court, where the child’s mother, Sunday Happiness, and another woman, Nneka Onah, were remanded at the Ondo Correctional Centre before they were granted bail.

“A major breakthrough came on July 9, 2025 when the complainant alerted the police that the missing child had been sighted in Asaba, Delta State.

“Detectives from the Command’s Gender Desk Team swiftly swung into action, successfully rescuing the child and reuniting her with her family,” he said.

According to him, during the operation, police arrested Amaka Chukwuemeka (30), who allegedly confessed to purchasing the child for N3.7 million.

Ayanlade added that Chukwuemeka later disclosed that her friend, Chinaza Owoh (38), introduced her to Mabel Esimai (58), who handed over the child under the guise of adoption, using forged documents.

“Further investigations revealed that Esimai had obtained the child from Chioma Okechukwu (37), who instructed her to find a buyer.

“This chain of confessions exposed the activities of a well-coordinated trafficking ring operating across three states,” the police spokesman said.

The Commissioner of Police, Lawal Adebowale, commended the professionalism of the Gender Desk Team for their swift and coordinated response, which ensured both the safe recovery of the child and the arrest of key suspects.

Adebowale directed further investigations to expose all collaborators and ensure prosecution of the culprits.

The case marks the second major breakthrough for the Command in its fight against child trafficking this year.

In January, operatives of the command arrested three suspects – Lukman Isiaka (42), Abosede Olanipekun, and Sabira Izuorah (62) – who allegedly kidnapped 14 children from Ondo and Osun states.

Investigations revealed that the children were sold to Izuorah, who ran an orphanage in Ihiala, Anambra State, for as much as ₦1 million each.

Police stormed the orphanage, rescuing the victims and apprehending the suspect.

However, the police command reiterated its commitment to dismantling trafficking syndicates and protecting vulnerable children across the state.

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a notorious gunrunner and local arms fabricator, alleged to be a major supplier of firearms to criminal gangs operating across Ondo, Osun, Kogi, Edo, and Kwara states.

The suspect was apprehended alongside three others who had long been on the police wanted list.

Confirming the development in Akure on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime in the region.

He explained that the suspect’s network extended beyond Ondo, fueling armed robbery and violent crimes across state lines.

Four suspects linked to the case have already been arraigned on charges of armed robbery and attempted murder, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the syndicate.

The breakthrough followed an armed robbery in Irele town, where a woman was shot in the leg and dispossessed of her motorcycle, N250,000, and other valuables.

Swift police action led to arrests in Irele and Ore, culminating in the capture of the gunrunner.

Ayanlade reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to rid Ondo of criminal elements, assuring residents that credible information provided to security agencies would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

Ondo sanctions two public school principals for extorting pupils

The Ondo state government has sanctioned two public secondary school principals for allegedly extorting pupils through the collection of illegal levies.

Although the names of the affected principals were not disclosed, they were also accused of imposing unapproved charges on students.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun disclosed this on Tuesday in Akure during an inspection tour of schools.

Ajibefun, who warned that the era of exploiting parents and students was over, vowed that the ministry would clamp down on school heads, sabotaging the government’s efforts to provide affordable education.

He explained that some parents had petitioned the ministry over reports of principals collecting fees far above state-approved levies, as well as demanding items not sanctioned by government.

“Two principals have already been sanctioned in the last few days. They were caught collecting illegal money from students even before the new term resumed,” Ajibefun said.

According to him, the principals were summoned, confronted with evidence, and subsequently confessed to the offence.

“They have been queried, and appropriate punishment will follow. This is to send a clear message that we are serious – this era is different,” he added.

The commissioner further cautioned head teachers and principals across the state to desist from illegal collections, assuring parents that the government remains committed to providing free and quality education in public schools.

Recall that ahead of the resumption of the 2025/2026 academic session, the state government had banned the collection of illegal levies in all public schools, following persistent calls from parents and education stakeholders for reforms in the sector.

Man kills friend over N20,000, hides body inside drum in Ondo community

The Akure Division of the Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State has ordered the remand of a suspected drug dealer, Eze Elechi Amadi, at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre for allegedly killing his friend and housemate, Otu Ifeanyi, following a quarrel over N20,000.

According to police investigations, the two friends lived together before the dispute, which broke out after Amadi, 40, allegedly demanded repayment of money he had withdrawn on Ifeanyi’s behalf.

The argument reportedly turned violent, with Amadi beating the 21-year-old with a horsewhip and fists, leaving him dead on the spot.

Police further alleged that Amadi stuffed the body into a sack, placed it in a blue drum, and attempted to dump it in the bush by tying the drum to his motorcycle.

However, the drum fell off on the roadside, forcing him to abandon the body and his bike.

An eyewitness, returning from a vigil, discovered the body and alerted the police.

Residents later confirmed that the deceased had been living with the suspect.

Police prosecutor Austine Omhenimhen informed the court that the offence occurred on August 24, this year, about 1:50 p.m. at Kajola, within the Ondo Magisterial District.

He noted that the offence contravened Sections 324 and 316 and is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo state.

The court did not take Amadi’s plea. The prosecutor requested his remand pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Defence counsel, Aki Amuluku, sought an adjournment to file a counter-affidavit.

However, Magistrate Odenusi Fadeyi ordered Amadi’s remand and adjourned the case until October 13, 2025, for further hearing.
