  • Ondo, land of brave and virtuous

This is Ondo State, the land of the brave and virtuous. This is a geographical space richly endowed by nature. This is our collective haven; an impregnable fortress for the protection of the weak and the underdog, a place where everyone is held and treated as important. We are proud inheritors of this enviable heritage from our forebears. We are bold, yet not foolhardy, resourceful, pragmatic and hospitable, but far from being stupid. We show understanding, readily, but resist all attempts by the impetuous and naïve, who mistake the craving for collaboration for the much-needed progress as weakness. We must remain consistent and resilient in the defence of this collective heritage.

I should, therefore, hasten to admonish that there is indeed little or no time for endless celebrations. These appointments must be seen as a call to service at this critical juncture in the life of our dear state. As our administration renews its pledge to the people to be accountable at all times, there is the urgent need for rededication by all those who serve the public.  We must encourage broad and massive participation of our people in the business of government.

Government and governance should not be stultifying abstractions, distant and disconnected from the service to which these modern concepts evolved to proffer. Those who lay claims to legitimacy of representation, as deriving from the people, must always keep their focus on this time-tested objective. Governance should not be reduced to a circus show; specious, ostentatious and profligate exhibition of inanities. Any decision or action of acclaimed representatives of the people must be an answer to identifiable socio-economic challenge. Elected and appointed public officials must subject their individual preferences to the collective will. Performance must be measured in terms of its positive impact on the people.

If development is about the people, all decisions and actions must be for the realisation of this lofty objective. Any opportunity offered for service must be understood in this context. Nobody must consider his/her choice, out of numerous other equally eminent candidates, as an invitation to primitive self-aggrandisement. This administration will not permit it. Any conduct which seeks to perpetuate the misery of the people will be discouraged actively.

No appointment is “juicy”. Every ministry, agency and established public office is important. This administration shall extend equal attention to all offices. It would be a mistake, with grave consequences, for anyone to act in a manner which negates decency and decorum. There will be zero tolerance for all acts considered unbecoming of patriotic indigenes of this state.  We will simply not allow them.

As the ship of this administration finally gathers steam to set sail, it is pertinent to acquaint the good people of this state with the true financial situation. We believe it is important that our people should possess this information. This must not be construed as politics and we plead with our media practitioners to subject this information to the crucible of serious scrutiny and analysis.  The knowledge of true financial status of the state government will guide and moderate the craving desires of all and sundry. Expectations of performance from the government must be anchored on reality. Government officials must bear this fact in mind, always.  It will be easy for the people to show understanding when they know the truth.

The economic condition of this state is precarious, depressingly so. We expend virtually all allocations and the insignificant revenue generated internally on recurrent expenditure. The internally generated revenue is very low. The huge debts owed by the state have been worsened by infrastructural deficit on ground. Yet we strive to discharge our obligations to creditors whose exactions on our very poor revenue militate, significantly, against planning.

The government is looked upon as the major provider of succour to the people. Times are indeed very hard.  Job creation is a cardinal policy of the administration. We are not unmindful of the cynicism of our political opponents who believe that engaging our youths productively is a tall order.  We are, however, convinced of not only the possibility of making this objective a reality, but our activities will erase the doubts as we progress.  All hands must be on deck.

This administration at inception met a staggering debt totalling N220,588,125,731.00 (Two hundred and twenty billion, five hundred and eighty-eight million, one hundred and twenty-five thousand, seven hundred and thirty-one naira).

With a total inherited debt of over N220 billion, it should not be difficult for anyone to know that the government’s capacity for seeming elastic adjustment to cater for the people has been stretched to its limit. There is no gain asserting the obvious; our administration is not in any position for frivolities. All of us must gird our loins for the great task ahead. The picture is not good. Therefore, all acts with the potential of pushing us deeper into economic crisis must be jettisoned. We earnestly promise to provide the needed leadership.

Despite the challenges encountered by our administration since assumption of office, we have approached governance with resilient determination. Paucity of funds has been a major encumbrance as explained earlier. To put out this quagmire, we have already commenced the process of re-engineering our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) efforts which will soon begin to yield the desired results.  The administration has, however, been able to embark on projects which impact positively on the lives and general well-being of our people. We are beginning to register our presence in the consciousness of the people through our activities in virtually all sectors.

Imbued with the unshaken belief that an environment with a developed infrastructure is that which is ready for progress, we have been able to intervene to bridge the very wide gap in infrastructural deficit.

Our intention is to turn our dear state into a hub of socio-economic activities. We are determined to stimulate the economic space for the benefit of our people. The commencement of regular flights from Akure to Lagos, and continuation of Akure to Abuja has been a tremendous boost to the state. Businessmen and women, traders and all those who take investment seriously are trooping into our state with ease. Ondo State is indeed a veritable destination for investors. Air Peace Airline is making this possible. The transparent conduct of this administration and its insistence on discharging its mandate sincerely and courageously make good things happen.

We promised to make life more abundant for our people. We will continue to strive to keep that vow within the available resources. We can turn things around positively. We only need men and women imbued with the necessary patriotic zeal and determination to do things differently. I enjoin us to make our appointments impactful on the generality of the people in the State. We must approach issues touching on their lives with seriousness.

    Ondo workers reject modulated salary

Labour unions in Ondo State have kicked against the state government’s plan to pay fractional parts of their outstanding salaries and pensions from the second tranche of the Paris Club fund.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in July, confirmed the receipt of N7.6 billion by the state as part of the Paris Club refund.

The governor pledged not to spend the money until a meeting was held with labour leaders on the modality for payment.

At a recent meeting with the labour unions, he hinted that only 75 per cent of the amount received would be expended on the payment of salary arrears while the balance would be for capital projects.

Akeredolu inherited six months’ salary arrears – from August 2016 to last January – from the immediate past administration of Dr Olusegun Mimiko, when he assumed office in February.

He had settled last August salary with five months still outstanding.

At the meeting with labour leaders, Akeredolu said the remaining fund in government coffers, after some deductions, such as the local government share and 25 per cent of the amount, would not be enough to pay the September salary.

The governor suggested that workers at all grade levels be paid 80 per cent of their salary for last September.

But the offer of modulated salary payment was rejected by the labour leaders, who pleaded that the governor should source for fund to pay the balance of one full month salary to all categories of workers.

It was learnt that when the governor objected to the suggestion of workers to look for another source to complete the amount needed for the payment of last September salary, estimated at N500 million, the labour leaders insisted that rather than accept modulated payment, the government should make 100 per cent payment to the number of workers the money could pay.

The labour unions, under the auspices of Nigeria   Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), expressed surprise when the state’s Accountant General reportedly told them that his office had computed 80 per cent salary to all workers, in line with the governor’s directive.

In a letter to the governor labour leaders in the state – Mrs Bose Daramola, Mr Sola Ekundayo and Mr Sunday Adeleye – the labour unions demanded a full payment of the last September arrears.

They urged the government to device whatever means possible to pay the salary arrears without delay.

They said: “Modulated payment or fractional payment in whatever form is unacceptable to Ondo State public servants and pensioners.

“It is mandatory that the state government should look inward to augment and pay the September 2016 salary in full to all workers and pensioners in the state.”

His words: “It’s been my ambition to have some enduring structure like an educational institution, and that informed the design of this property. I’m now handing this over to the University so it could be used as an educational edifice in line with my original vision and expectation.

“I believe by the time this place is put to use by the university that it will boost socio-economic, activities in this town. The artisans and market women, as well as commercial motorcyclists will make more money. I also believe that the presence of undergraduates here would make many lazy youths to sit-up and dream bigger.”

Speaking after inspecting the properties, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, lauded the gesture and called on well-meaning individuals and communities to donate to help the university develop, saying government alone cannot fund tertiary education in Nigeria.

Ajibefun said: “We’re highly impressed with what we have seen and the large heart that Chief has for donating this to the university. This is a good example of how the society can grow.

“The university, therefore, expresses its appreciation to him. We will perfect the papers so we can take possession and put the properties to use without delay.”

Also speaking, the Oloyin of Oyin- Akoko, Oba Olusola Bamisile, praised Ajibulu for the donation and urged the university to take possession and put the facilities to immediate use.

  • Princess Oladunni Odu bounces back

Like the prodigal son retracing his steps back home after years of sojourn in an unknown land, Princess Oladunni Odu has returned to her rightful place on the social scene. The one-time chairperson of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) had gone off the social radar after her principal, the late Olusegun Agagu, was swept out of office by the storm that heralded the ascension of the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko.

During her heyday as an Agagu loyalist, Oladunni bestrode the social scene like a colossus. As one of the few who had the governor’s ears, she became the deity through whom access to the governor was secured. But all that was before the Hurricane Mimiko swept her and her acolytes way from the stage.

But like a balloon refilled with air after it was deflated, she has now bounced back on the social scene. She was recently named as one of the new special assistants to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. With a high-profile job once again in her kitty, Princess Oladunni is getting ready to take the Ondo social scene by storm once again.

…how Lagos, Ondo, Delta govs helped secure their freedom

THE combined efforts of Governors Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) were largely responsible for the rescue, yesterday, of the  six abducted Epe,Lagos State school boys from kidnappers,The Nation can now reveal.

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, is also  said to have “played a crucial role in the release of the boys.”

No ransom was paid for their release, sources said last night.

The  boys were left off on the coastal waterways of Ondo State after 63 days in captivity.

A Presidency source speaking on the matter  last night said: “It took the hard work of the Lagos State Governor and significant collaboration of the governors of Ondo and Delta State to secure the release of the kidnap 6 Lagos school boys.

“While the Lagos State Governor had worked so hard on breaking the ice, it was discovered that the boys were held around the coastal waterways of Ondo State.

“This was where the coordination of the Federal Government became even much more compelling pulling in both civil and military security agencies like the Police, SSS and the Nigerian Navy to work with the Lagos State Governor and also the Ondo State government whose Deputy Governor played a crucial role in ensuring the eventual release of the boys.

“Both the Delta State Governor and his deputy also supplied important support to the process that facilitated the release.

“The Nigerian Navy was responsible for providing the required military logistics that eased the release.

“The other security agencies like the SSS and Police also played active roles, and with the Navy, joined the Lagos, Ondo and Delta state governments in the final talks that produced freedom for the boys about two months ago.

The source however insisted that “no ransom was paid.”

Only Sunday while speaking to reporters in Lagos, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo assured the parents and families of the boys that their children  would return home hopefully.

He praised the Lagos State governor for the efforts of the state government in dealing with the situation.

  • BEDC to reconnect Ondo communities

    BEDC to reconnect Ondo communities

Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC) has urged Ondo State government to create industrial layout for energy concentration to enable it boost economic activities even as it promised to restore power supply to six Akoko communities under Owo Business Unit of the state.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Funke Osibodu, stated this when she led BEDC management on a courtesy visit to Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in Akure. She said the company already partnered with the state to boost its economic activity by completing 50 electricity projects out of which 31 had been commissioned while 17 others await commissioning.

She said dedicated projects will increase production capacity of industries due to cost reduction as BEDC power was cheaper than any alternative power supply, adding that it will also make them create more jobs for indigenes. She assured that BEDC will make more power available for economic development and job creation in the state.

Osibodu also noted that BEDC community relations department was set up to ensure proper relationship management of all communities within its network hence the resolution to make power available to six communities had reached the final stage and the six communities would be energised having fulfilled the terms of the agreement signed.

The BEDC chief urged the state government and other stakeholders to join in the crusade against vandalism of the company’s property, adding that BEDC has taken some steps such as fencing of transformers to prevent destruction by vandals.

She stated that BEDC has through employment of graduates and technicians of Ondo State origin under its Graduate and Technician Trainee scheme supported youth empowerment with a view to reducing youth restiveness in the state. In addition, the partnership with Elizade University in Ilara Mokin on the graduate training programme has also empowered a university within the state.

Osibodu also called on the governor to ensure that that there was review in the curriculum of tertiary institutions in Ondo State such as university, polytechnics and technical colleges to make their content align with industries and companies’ requirements so as to make it easier for students to use when employed.

Chief State Head, Ondo State, Olakunbi Labiyi, listed key challenges in power supply to the state to include major transmission limitations restricting quantum of power delivery to the state. He said the “132KV lines from Oshogbo to Akure with undersized conductor covers Ondo and Ekiti States with maximum power pegged at 50 megawatts (Mw), while the feeder is often open by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) under frequency condition and kept out until the frequency improves.”

He called for the quick replacement of failed 60MVA power transformer in Akure TCN, and urged the government to intervene and ensure speedy completion of the on-going 330/132/33k transformer under construction along Akure/Owo Road.
