  • Schools come alive in Ondo community

Schools come alive in Ondo community

Bothered about the deplorable state of some public schools in Ondo State, the Senator representing Ondo Central District, Chief Tayo Alasoadura has inaugurated blocks of renovated classrooms at St Patrick’s Primary School and Baptist High School, both in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State as part of his constituency projects.

Besides, the lawmaker has launched the construction of multi-purpose hall in the town.

Idanre is one of the six local government areas in the Central District. Others are Akure South, Ifedore, Akure North, Ondo East and Ondo West.

Alasoadura apologised for his inability to organise the quarterly Town Hall meeting he promised since his assumption of office.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) said the enormity of work in the Senate and particularly the Committee where he is the Chairman and his resolve to break the jinx of numerous years over the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) were largely responsible.

He, however, expressed delight that the jinx was finally broken when the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) was passed on the floor of the Senate.

This development, he said, generated accolades of fulfilment despite what it cost his constituent, promising that the Town Hall meeting would commence without delay.

Alasoadura noted that despite the overwhelming legislative/committee activities he is saddled with, he had been able to facilitate some projects for the Senatorial District while also executing some personally in fulfilment of his campaign promises.

The former commissioner noted that having observed that most of the facilities in the primary and secondary schools were in deplorable condition, he decided to renovate them within the available resources.

He recalled that on December 22, last year, he organised a women/youth empowerment programme in Akure South for three out of the six local government areas within the Senatorial District where he distributed empowerment materials that included cars, motorcycles, manual sewing machines and grinding machine.

He also added that cash empowerment was given to over 60 beneficiaries across the three local government areas, noting that the empowerment programme for the three other local government areas will hold later this year.

Residents and management of the schools praised the efforts of Senator Alasoadura in enhancing the living conditions of members of Idanre community.

Dignitaries who attended the event were the lawmaker representing Akure North/South Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Afe Olowookere, Caretaker Chairman, Akure North Local Government Area, Segun Oluyede and traditional rulers, among others.

“The award is very significant more so, in this age when genuine role-models with sincerity of purpose, uncommon vision, focus and Olympian fortitude are bred less frequently. It is imperative to identify and celebrate those that are making their visible marks in the task of collective transformation even if only to create a sense of desire for others to emulate their noble deeds.

“The selection panel for this prestigious award comprises of well-meaning professionals drawn from all walks of life who objectively considered without bias or favoritism, the public recommendations of Nominees, through a fair and transparent process.

“Engineer Ife Oyedele’s public spirited standpoint, his public and private comportments which typified the ethos of OMOLÚWÀBÍ (well behaved Yoruba son) and more recently his continuous and unparalleled humanitarian service which has gone a long way in putting smile permanently on the faces of the people, were all painstakingly considered.

Ondo, Osun motorists groan over collapsed Mokwa Bridge

Motorists and commuters plying the Ikare-Owo-Akure-Ilesa Road are groaning over diversion of articulated vehicles from the road, following the collapse of Mokwa Bridge on Jebba Road in Niger State.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that since last weekend, the volume of heavy duty and articulated vehicles going to the North has increased on the route: they have been diverted to the only major road linking the South with the North.

Ikare-Owo-Akure-Ilesa Road, which normally took three hours, now takes almost six hours because of the heavy duty vehicles moving at snail speed on the road.

A community leader at Akoko, Alhaji Ibrahim Kilani, urged authorities to repair the bridge so that vehicles can return to their normal routes.

He urged the state government to expedite action on ‘Alabojuto Hill project to allow smooth traffic flow and road safety.

The community leader hailed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for monitoring the road and curtailing traffic gridlock.

The state’s FRSC Commander Edwin Jack said more men had been deployed in the state to guarantee safe motoring during and after the Sallah holiday.

Jack urged motorists to obey traffic regulations to prevent carnage on the roads.

  • 100 days: Akeredolu on course in Ondo

100 days: Akeredolu on course in Ondo

As celebration of 100 days in office by political office holders is becoming a tradition in the country, many would’ve been on the edge to see what the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Olurotimi Akeredolu has done within the short period.

Although, one would’ve considered insignificant the first one hundred days of an administration with a four-year mandate in evaluating and drawing conclusion on what the future holds for the people, it’s pertinent to speak on some of the giant strides made within the short period by the APC-led government.

Bearing in mind the precarious situation the APC-led government met on ground in the state vis-a-vis the economic recession in the country, Akeredolu was able to face the challenges headlong to bring dividends of democracy to the people.

It still beats the imagination of many political watchers how he was able to solve the issue of unpaid salaries of the thousands of state workers who were wallowing in debt and hunger when he took over the reins of power in the state.

Some economic analysts couldn’t figure out how he was able to achieve the winning streak in the face of terrible financial situation he met on ground with billions of naira owed several financial institutions with repayment plans that severely depleted the state revenue.

The governor, being a dogged personality, has been making frantic efforts to turn things around in the state. A cursory look at the magnitude of construction works which have been embarked upon and completed and those that are still on going revealed how determined he is in turning the state around as he has promised the people. In all the three Senatorial districts, there have been massive road repairs and constructions in a manner that has never been witnessed before in the history of our state. State-owned tertiary institutions also benefited from the road construction projects. At University of Technology in Okitipupa, intra-roads network were fully constructed and electrified from the main gate inward. Also the state Medical University, Ondo, received similar road construction and other institutions roads are all currently receiving attention.

Looking at the industrial sector of the state, the APC-led administration has hit the ground running as it’s making moves to quickly bring the state to redemption and onto the path of greatness again by resuscitating moribund state-owned industries. To this effect, the administration has signed several MoUs with some companies including a foreign organization.

The APC-led administration has changed the face of governance and the scope of Arakunrin Akeredolu is beyond the horizon as his administration has signed several MoUs with different strong companies, including a foreign partner and with the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC on Olokola project to build a 27-kilometer overhead bridge across the sea that will link Ilaje with Lekki in Lagos State. At the completion of this massive project, without doubt, commercial activities of great magnitude would burst forth in the state and to a large extent turn it to another business and financial hub particularly due to its proximity to the nation’s major commercial hub, Lagos.

Meanwhile, the administration is working assiduously to ensure all roads in the rural areas in the state are linked to the major highways, as part of efforts to achieve this goal, the administration is repairing and constructing all roads in every ward in the state. Besides, the Governor has made it mandatory for all the eighteen caretaker chairmen in the state to construct at least ten kilometer of roads in their local government areas and they have complied with the directive immediately. The goal of the APC-led government is to turn the state into one big octopus of road contraction when it begins major road construction projects in the state.

There’s no doubt that the people of the state have begun to experience great economic relief, besides the state workers who no longer work with fear of uncertainty concerning payment of their salaries as the governor has begun to gradually offset salary arrears owed by the previous government.

As a focused administration which believed in rule of law, justice and set to provide and work in a peaceful environment, the Arakunrin Akeredolu-led administration within a short time of assumption of office reinstated all the lecturers that were unjustly sacked by the last administrator at the state-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko. Full benefits of all the affected lecturers were paid up to date.

It has been argued at several fora since the nation has been plunged into economic recession that exploration and exploitation of agricultural advantages abound in the nation is the only quickest way out of the economic quagmire.  The Arakunrin Akeredolu-led Government has keyed into this as he’s currently using agriculture to drive employment in the state through carefully crafted programmes of engagement of the youths that will eventually triggered Agric revolution in the state and food security.

The government is encouraging farmers and making farming attractive to the youths through its direct procurement of farm inputs like fertilizer and agro chemicals affordable to them. Quite a number of schemes were initiated by the administration to make commercial farming practicable in the state by making financial provisions through what it tagged Anchor Borrowers scheme. Beneficiaries of the scheme are closely monitored to ensure the set goal is achieved. Among the schemes is Organized Agricultural Land acquisition for cluster farming which is done  on local government basis to allow more people to take to farming. No fewer than two thousand youths have been penciled down to benefit from the Phase I of the Graduate Youth Empowerment programme in multiple ways. Likewise, the administration has facilitated the approval of over N500 million worth of business plan for different groups across the 18 local governments in the state, this was made possible by the Governor, Arakunrin Akeredolu, who made a high level contact with the World Bank team.

In order to have a proper and comprehensive record of farmers in the state to enhance projections and developmental plans, the administration is making arrangement for the registration of all farmers in the state and their farmlands to be processed and uploaded into the state portal. This will afford the government to be able to have data of farmers in the state that could easily be accessed for whatever assistance required for each particular farmer and farmland, and for exposure to the national and international market.

Moreover, for value chain, the Akeredolu-administration is revamping all moribund state-owned agro-processing enterprises and facilitating the establishment of new ones. This is to improve the quality of the produce to generate more proceeds for the farmers and government.

Arrangement is also ongoing on e-extension to facilitate information flow for Farmers and other stakeholders. The desire of the administration to ensure farmers are not financially handicapped, Farmers Micro Finance Bank is a top priority of APC-led government that will afford farmers easy access to finance and revive the cooperative society culture and spirit, that will transform the state economy right from the Grassroots. The administration is not leaving any stone unturned as it’s set to explore all crops as arrangement is in top gear to commence the implementation of both small-holders and medium/large-scale programme for oil palm, cocoa and cashew cultivation.

The goal is to rehabilitate existing cocoa farms and facilities, the planting of new ones with the best variety. The Fisheries sector is not left untouched. Fishery and Aquaculture development with the use of floating cage system is in top gear for farmers including youths who are just coming into the enterprise.

Ex-soldier wants 30-year-old marriage dissolved over adultery

A 72-year-old retired soldier, Samuel Adebamigbe, on Wednesday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 30-year-old marriage over his wife’s adulterous life.

Samuel, who resides at No. 88, Ajayi Road, Modupe Bus Stop, Oke-Ira, Ogba, told the court that his wife, Iyabo, was having extra-marital affairs with several men.

He also said his wife was not submissive and could no longer live with her.

The petitioner, an indigene of Ondo State, said: “My wife is not trustworthy and she is also wayward.

“She lied to me that she was from Ondo State but l later realised she is an indigene of Edo.

“My family was against our union from the beginning because of her promiscuity, but because l love her, l decided to marry her.

“There was a time l found a letter addressed to her lover stating where to meet each other.”

Samuel also claimed that his wife was having an affair with a prophet, but she denied, claiming she was always with the “man of God” for intercessory prayers.

“The trouble is too much; l can no longer bear her arrogant and promiscuous lifestyle.

“Whenever he had sexual intercourse, she keeps complaining of stomach upset.

“I became worried and asked her to go for a medical checkup and she told me that the doctor said she should have sex just once a week.

“I was told that due to my wife’s adulterous life, a charm was placed on her which is causing her stomach upset,” he said.

The husband said he decided to marry a third wife in Ondo State because he needed to have sex more frequently.

He declared: “I am asking for a divorce because this marriage that is blessed with three children has already broken down.”

Responding, 50-year-old Iyabo, a businesswoman, denied all the allegations, saying she is not ready for the dissolution of the marriage.

“He embarrasses me publicly, calling me an adulterous woman and he beats me with wire at the slightest opportunity.

“My husband does not respect me as a wife; he claims that l am an illiterate and that he has married an educated woman.”

The court’s President, Mr. Philip Williams, appealed to both parties to reconcile in the interest of their children.

“The court does not encourage divorce; we are here to make peace where possible, the woman should be submissive if she still wants to keep the marriage,” he said.

Williams, who later invited the couple into his chamber for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), adjourned the case until July 27.

Sources said Mrs Lawson’s family became curious when she did not return home from the pastor.

The development reportedly prompted them to raise a search team, which found her body in a bush inside a palm plantation on Irele-Ore Road.

A source said the deceased’s private part, breasts and eyes were removed by her suspected killers.

The family’s efforts to know her whereabouts from the pastor were unsuccessful.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said it was not clear yet if the deceased was killed by ritualists.

He said: “We cannot say for now if it was a spiritual killing because before the deceased was found, her body was already decomposing. So, one cannot say yet if parts of her body were removed.

“But we are waiting for the result of autopsy to determine the cause of the death.”

The police spokesman said a member of Taiwo’s church had been arrested in connection with the killing.

  • Anxiety in Ondo as NLC alleges plan to sack 600 council workers

Anxiety in Ondo as NLC alleges plan to sack 600 council workers

There is tension in Ondo State organised labour, following an allegation that about 600 local government workers attached to traditional rulers have been “tactically” sacked.

It was learnt that the names of the workers had been removed from the government’s pay role.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to challenge the government’s action.

Sources said the development came to the open, following the non-payment of May salaries to the palace workers.

It was learnt that they were being paid from local government areas’ purse.

The workers were said to have been employed into the councils and captured by remittal payment system during the administration of Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Sources said eight workers were captured for each first class traditional rulers and six for second class rulers. Others have two workers.

The removal of the workers’ names has been generating tension in various palaces.

There are allegations that more workers will be affected.

NLC Chairman Mrs Bosede Daramola said the congress will resist the action.

Mrs Daramola said the  action contradicted the governor’s promise.

She said: “The workers, irrespective of who they were working directly with, were employed properly and captured under the remittal system.

“It is unacceptable for government to sack them and expose them to previous system when the workers were being paid indiscriminately by the monarchs they were working directly under.”

The union leader said the congress would not accept a situation whereby some monarchs would collect money meant for the workers and pay them pittance.
