Ondo 2016: Ward chairmen get motorbikes for grassroots mobilisation

The lawmaker representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, Dr Bode Ayorinde has mobilised chairmen in the 203 wards of Ondo State with motorcycles ahead of the November 26 governorship election.

Ayorinde, the founder of Achievers University, Owo, is also a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He had earlier donated 24 Toyota Sienna cars to all APC chairmen in the 18 local government areas and other party stakeholders.

The legal practitioner said the motorcycles and cars were meant to facilitate party assignments at the grassroots in order to ensure victory in the forthcoming governorship election.

Ayorinde said: “These items do not belong to anybody and they are not for empowerment of anybody, but a provision to aid mobility and mobilisation of people.

“I am providing these because I want APC to win, not because of myself or any other aspirant. As I said when we were distributing the cars, it is just to know that the party is serious. Let us not under rate the opponents; we should work very hard.”

The varsity proprietor urged the people to solicit for votes with the motorbikes provided, urging them not to sleep or slumber until APC becomes victorious.

Ayorinde said: “If the party picks me as its flag bearer, it will be good for us all. I will industrialise the state as it lacks industrial estates that could ginger employment for the people.

“This is the third time I will be coming here to uplift the party. I want to lay a good example that you can become a governor without the help of thugs. This is how best politics can be practised.”

The lawmaker appealed to all party supporters, particularly those from Ondo South and Ilaje Local Government Area to remain calm on the anomaly in the appointment at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He stressed that the development would be rectified, even as he advised party faithful to pray for the success of the party at the polls.

While receiving the motorbikes, the Chairman of APC, Isaac Kekemeke, said there was no division in the party.

He said: “You all are representatives of the party anywhere you find yourselves. The vehicles given to the ward chairmen are not for them but for the use of party members in all the wards.”

Kekemeke said the motorbikes were in the custody of Ward Chairmen, and not their personal properties.

The former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) commended Ayorinde for his regular assistance to the party.

He urged other aspirants and party stakeholders to emulate the lawmaker, who was also the first contestant to pay the mandatory N2 million development levy for the party.

Some of the Ward Chairmen who spoke with Southwest Report commended Ayorinde’s, assuring that they would make good use of the motorcyles to facilitate victory for the APC in the imminent governorship election.

  • Tinubu: Ondo primary will be free, fair

Tinubu: Ondo primary will be free, fair

•‘No undue influence on the process’

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu spoke yesterday on the impending Ondo State governorship primary, promising that it will be free and fair.

In a letter to an aspirant, Dr Tunji Abayomi, Tinubu said the party would hold a credible and transparent primary devoid of undue influence.

“The candidate, who can garner the most support and votes will win”, Tinubu said, adding: “My dear friend I leave you free to run and win the primary. If you win, I shall congratulate you and support  you in the general election. However, you must respect my rights as well and leave me to my own conscience to support who I will support. And to show interest in whom I wish”.

    The letter reads:

“It is said that to err is human. By your letter to me, it seems that you seek to remind me that I am human.  Of this, I am constantly reminded. I know I have made my share of mistakes. But my progressive inclination remains firmly rooted. However, by your pained and inaccurate letter, you have proven that you are human too.

“You have been a friend and will continue to be. Thus, I can dispense with needless formality so that we can get to the crux of the issue. Your career is that of a lawyer and activist. I appreciate all that you have done in the pursuit of a more just and democratic Nigeria.

However, your letter to me is an impetuous display unbecoming a man of your status and a man seeking the highest leadership position in his state. And as a lawyer, you well know that one cannot seek equity without having done equity.

In writing the letter, you appear to have been bitten by a bug that often blinds the objectivity of a man. You have been bitten by an ambition that you fear you shall not be able to realise.

“In your pursuit of office, you have sought my support and influence. When you sought that support, you thought it proper and democratic to do so. If I had signalled my support for you, I am sure that you would never have written this letter alleging that I was undermining the democratic will of the people. You would have been pleased with me, I suppose.

“However, because that support has not been forthcoming, you fear that the support you wanted may now go to a rival candidate. In your judgment, my support for you would have been democratic. Should I support another, then that same support is now to be considered dictatorial and unfair.

“Frankly, dear friend, I do not see the objectivity in your analysis or the merit in what you claim as your injury. If you seek a person’s support, you cannot in good conscience turn around and object that such support should never be given to another person. Your position is more undemocratic and unfair than what you accuse me of. Your words attack me for being undemocratic when in reality, your heart attacks me for not giving you what you want.

“I have participated in elections for decades for myself and others. Some have been won. Some lost. Never, however, have I asked a friend for support than condemn for giving the very support I sought of them to another person. To do so is not to stand on principle but on bruised pride.

“You said I seek to deny your democratic right. It is you who seek to grab mine. If not mistaken, I believe I am a member of the APC. I have a right and duty to support the candidate who I believe will best represent the party. What your letter is really saying is that if I don’t support you, I should keep my mouth shut. You complain of a purported meeting I had to discuss the coming primary in Ondo. Do you deny me and other APC members now the right to assembly and talk. Had you heard that the meeting had anointed you, I doubt you would have written the first word of the letter you sent to me.

But here I want to give you and others a clear assurance that you may rest more at ease. I reserve the right to support any candidate I wish because no one has the right to take this away from me. However, I will also do everything in my power to ensure the primaries are free and fair and that there will be no undue influence on the process. The candidate who can garner the most support and votes will win. Since its inception, the APC has run the cleanest and most transparent primaries in the history of this nation. The just-concluded primary in Edo is further evidence of this.

My dear friend, I leave you free to run and win the primary. If you do, I shall congratulate you and support you in the general election.

“However, you must respect my rights as well and leave me to my own conscience to support who I will support. And to show interest in whom I wish.

“I also need to correct what appears to be a mistaken impression on your part about the 2015 election. Your letter seems to indicate that it was on your advice that I backed President Buhari. You assume too much credit and should be more guarded in your assertions.  “As a veteran in the political arena, I do not make important decisions lightly.  I make final political decisions and calculations on my own after deep reflections and consultation with many people from many perspectives.  I can assure you dear friend that I trust my own political counsel more than yours and that I have numerous other advisors whose advice I weigh more than yours.

“After all, had you so much influence over me in the presidential election, it would mean you surely should have greater influence over me when it comes to the primary in your state.

“I do appreciate your passion and concern for the welfare of the people. Yet, you are not the only one who feels this. The love of the people is not exclusive to you, Tunji. My entire life has been devoted to the betterment of the people and of this nation. Lagos is a much better place because of what we have tried to do and I pray that it will be better still.

“Many worked hard and long and sacrificed much, even more than you, to bring in the new Federal Government. We did not do this as sport but to improve the lives of the people. You need not lecture me about the plight of the people. Their right to a better life is what motivates me. I do not doubt your love for the people and this nation. Yet, you have no right to doubt mine for you do not love this people and this place more than I do. Of that, I can assure you.

“I am a democrat. I am ready for the chips to fall where they may after an open and fair primary in Ondo. Instead of welcoming this, it appears you are afraid of it. Instead of fighting me, who is but one man with no vote, you should be fighting for votes and support. Your letter to me was woefully misplaced and inappropriate. Still, I wish you the best and may democracy and the people’s will prevail above all else.”

  • Two arrested in Ondo for ‘killing’ Okada rider

Two friends have been arrested for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist identified as Thomas Amusan at Ile-Oluji/Ipetu Ijesa Expressway in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government area of Ondo State.

The suspects – Rilwan Rasheed and Sheu Akande – were accused of killing the deceased and also stealing his motorcycle.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects committed the crime on August 8.

Joseph narrated that Rasheed and Akande asked the commercial motorcyclist to take them to one of the villages in the area but later killed the deceased on the way and took away his motorcycle.

“They asked the deceased to take them to a nearby village. On getting to a junction, they asked the man to stop and as they were trying to snatch the motorcycle from him, he resisted. So, they have to start matcheting him till he died.

“After they have succeeded in killing him, they dumped his lifeless body in the bush and took the motorcycle away.”

He added that when the men of the command got the information about the incident, they swung into action and through an intelligent move, the suspects were able to be apprehended.

The police spokesman assured that the suspects would soon be charge to court.

    •Youths seek credible primaries

    •Tinubu hailed

Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied the claim that it is planning to impose one of the aspirants on its platform as the party’s candidate for the November 26 governorship poll.

There was an allegation that an investor, Segun Abraham, was picked by the APC national leaders as the party’s candidate.

Its spokesman, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, said the APC would conduct a transparent primary election for the 25 aspirants that have shown interest in the party’s ticket.

He stressed that over 3,000 delegates, among them the party’s leaders, would participate in the primary election, where the party’s flag-bearer will emerge.

“The people of Ondo State should have patience with us, as this could be the handwork of our opposition in the state.

“The leaders of the APC have not imposed anybody on the party and there is definitely no room for such because everybody is preparing for the primary election.

“Just as the leaders have reiterated, we (APC) in Ondo State are going to conduct a credible primary election, where our candidate will emerge and its process shall be transparent and credible,” Adesanya said.

He urged the party supporters to remain united to wrest power from Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Also yesterday, APC leaders have been urged to ensure a transparent and smooth exercise to facilitate the emergence of the party’s flagbearer for the November 26 governorship poll in Ondo State.

The party’s youth wing under the leadership of Mr. Babalayo Olutayo made the pleas in a communique issued after its meeting in Akure, the state capital.

The communique signed by the youth leaders in the 18 local government areas described youths as responsible wing of the progressives party with the vision and mission of facilitating the process that would engender a credible leader to rescue the state from its economic doldrums as being witnessed under the Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s administration.

The youths acknowledged the contributions of APC leaders, especially the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for his struggle to ensure that the sunshine state is back in the progressives’ fold.

The communique said: “We acknowledge the effort of the APC National Leader in ensuring that a conducive political atmosphere established on the threshold of equity, justice and fair-play is provided in the state.”

The youth leaders lamented that under the present dispensation, they had suffered marginalisation in decision-making and implementation of policies that affect the party.

“We the youth always determine where the political pendulum will swing because I’ve constitute 80 per cent of total population of delegates and voters in the state. At the same time, we are the agents of mobilisation during electioneering campaigns, but usually being sidelined in the party’s affairs.

“The APC youth should not be seen as the custodian of political liability and failure, which must only be used and dumped at all times,” the communique added.

The youth noted that they have resolved to channel all their energy and strength to ensure the emergence of a credible candidate at the primary election.

They pledged their determination to hold on strictly to the mandate of ensuring a peaceful primary election on August 27.

  • Ondo youths hail governor

Some youths under the aegies of Ondo Youth Coalition (OYC) have described Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led administration as innovative.

According to the coalition, Mimiko has been able to draw a line between governance and politics in the implementation of people-oriented projects. The youths said the global attention drawn by the state under the governor attested to the governor’s impact.

In a statement by its President (Adekanmbi Oluwatuyi), Secretary (Michael Oluwole) and Public Relations Officer (Obanoyen Abiola), the OYC said the Mimiko-led government will be leaving a legacy at the end of its two-term early next year.

The statement reads: “The Mimiko-led government has impacted much on the lives of residents in the state with its lofty ideas and record creating innovations which have in no small measure raised the bar of governance in the state.

“The Mother and Child Hospitals, the urban renewal success which earned the governor a United Nations (UN) scroll of honour, Cocoa revolution and the government’s job creation activities as powered by its wealth creation agency as well as its economic diversification programmes have arrested global attention.

”Before now, no programme of note had warranted other states in the country to visit Ondo with the sole aim to understudy, but there are countless number of such visits under the Mimiko-led government with the latest being Kogi state.”

Re- echoing the call by the former Governor of old Kaduna State Alhaji Balarabe Musa that Mimiko should lead the progressives because of his people-oriented programmes, the youths caution the governor’s successor against jettisoning his laudable projects.

New market for Ondo community, 10 years after

Commercial activities will soon begin to boom in Ifara community in Akoko South East Local Government Area of Ondo State after the construction of a new market 10 years after their market collapsed and killed a 12-year-old boy. The construction of the market was at the instance of the member representing the area, Mr Babatunde Kolawole. The new market comprises 14 open stores.

The people, who are mainly farmers and traders, had been transacting their businesses under the sun and in the rain for the past 10 years when the only market in the town and which was constructed by the community, collapsed and killed

Since then, they had hoped that successive administrations at the local and state levels would help in reconstructing the collapsed market which had been a death trap. Their hopes were dashed.

Any wonder the people were ecstatic during the inauguration of the new market, during which 78 aged people from the three wards in Ile-labo zone which comprises ward 3 Ifira, ward 6 Ipesi and ward 11 Sosan Akoko were empowered.

Kolawole said market women are the backbone of any family and should not be subjected to hardship.

He reiterated his commitment to provide environment conducive to buying and selling for market men and women.

The lawmaker, who frowned at the attitude of the chairman of Akoko South East, Mr. Sola Agunloye for playing politics with developmental projects meant to enhance people’s well-being, alleged that he (the chairman) attempted to stop the market project.

He said: “I don’t know why a local council chairman should be working against the progress of a community under his domain. He should be appreciative that someone is coming to his rescue since he has failed in his primary assignment.

“The Chairman should stop playing politics with progress of the community. They are afraid of the November 26, governorship election and that is why he has been sent to stop the market project because when the campaign starts, they may not have anything to campaign with.

“We intended to also reconstruct the dilapidated market because we have budgeted N5 million for that but they preferred to send security operatives to stop the job; claiming they have this in their budget. We have given them sometime to start the reconstruction or we return to the site”.

On the N5, 000 monthly stipends for the aged people, Kolawole said: “I do promise them that. As long as I am at the National Assembly, they will not go hungry again.

“This is going to be a continuous empowerment programme because what we did was to take care of three wards and other wards will soon benefit from the programme.”

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the council, Mr. Oluwasannu Ogunbi praised the lawmaker for coming to the rescue of the people, whom he said had been subjected to hardship due to non-availability of decent market.

He, however, urged the lawmaker not to be distracted by the activities of his opponents, saying the community is behind him and appreciates his developmental projects.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Joshua Orepo joined the APC.

Dignitaries that attended the event were the state Chairman, Isaack Kekemeke, Secretary, Raman Rotimi, Financial Secretary, Moshood Ishola, Administrative Secretary and Smart Omodunbi, among others

  • ‘Why Akure should produce next Ondo governor’

‘Why Akure should produce next Ondo governor’

Former Ondo State House of Assembly member Prince Ademola Adegoroye, in this interview with reporters in Lagos, explains why he is eyeing the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and why Akure should produce the next governor. Excerpts:

Why do you want to govern Ondo State?

I am sure you are aware that this is not my first time of running for the office of governor in Ondo State. I have done so twice.  I contested for the first time in 2003 and the second was in 2007 when I became the governorship candidate of the Action Congress in the state. I have always known that I was born to lead; born to put smiles on the faces of my people.  And since leadership is a responsibility, all my life, I have never had any doubt on my mind about my capacity to lead. So, I set out since then to know what politics is and to practice it the way it should be done in order to make life better for the common man.

I have been a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly and contested on two occasions- first in 1997 and second in 1999. I started this governorship ambition of mine in 2003, though people thought that I was too young for the position. But because I have a vision, that I was born to do this and I have this burning desire in me to make a difference and leave my footprint on the sands of time. So my vision has never changed, my focus has never changed. I want to be governor of my state because I know I have the capacity to make a difference.

What are the changes he intends to effect in governance?

My stance in politics is to always be circumspect about analysing other people. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko came into office in 2009, and I suppose he has done his own best. But to the best of my mind, Dr, Mimiko, no matter how well-intentioned he is, could not do it all. It could be his style or anything, but today; my people in the state want a change in the style of governance. There are so many areas where Mimiko has done well. First is in the area of health where he put up one of the best trauma centres in the country in Ondo town. I did not want to go there but sometime ago, I had a good reason to go there. I have been to many hospitals in Nigeria and abroad, but I can sincerely attest to the fact that it is a world class hospital. But I still believe that we should have such hospital in every senatorial district in the state. Today, if people have to come from Ikare Akoko to Ondo for treatment, that is not good enough. We need standard hospitals, world class, at least, three of such in Ondo State. Akure as we speak, does not have a standard hospital. I intend to address this by bringing such to the people and ensure they are well-managed, well run hospital in each zone. Right now, the General hospital in Akure is nowhere. If you go there, you will be amazed. A lot of attention has been given to Ondo, which should not be so.

In the state, civil servants are owed upwards of five months salaries. What do you intend to do in the area of welfare?

By the grace of God, I will ensure that the welfare of my people is given priority attention. Right now, I think the state government is owing about six to seven months’ salaries. And you know what that means, particularly in a civil service state. Government is the major spender, the biggest spender because when the civil servants get paid, everybody benefits from it. I am not a civil servant but I feel it, because my wife is one. Naturally, she contributes to the running of the house. There are sometimes when I am not at home, she buys diesel and a couple of things, but now she cannot do that because she has not been paid.  Other parents suffer in similar manners because they cannot pay their children’s school fees, cannot pay for other services. So it permeates the whole system and that has crumbled the whole economy in Ondo State. That should not be so.

I am sure that if Dr. Mimiko has prioritised his spending, alongside federal allocation and internally generated revenue, Ondo State would not have been like this. Take for instance, Ondo State is the only oil producing state in the whole of the South-West. So, we earn higher federal allocation than states like Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Ekiti states. So, we should not be in the class of states that cannot pay salaries for upwards of six months. So, we are going to look into that. Already, I have set up a team to look at the issue of IGR and they are already working. We know that the decline in the price of all has led to reduction in the revenue that accrues to Ondo State, so we are looking at how to soar up our IGR so as to be able to do well in that area like Lagos State, which is doing marvelously well. Many people have property in Ondo State, for instance, and nobody is asking them about tenement rates. This will be addressed. I also know that if the current developments in the international oil market are anything to go by, oil price will go up. We have no reason not to pay civil servants in Ondo State and by the grace of God, I will ensure that these civil servants get paid as at when due. I am a welfarist and by the 30th of every month, if my driver and security men are not paid, I get worried. Hence, I will be more worried if civil servants are not paid.

How strong and united is the Ondo APC?

Dr. Mimiko was in the Labour Party and he joined the Peoples Democratic Party later.  I have no doubt in my mind that APC has the structure, a dynamic chairman, leadership and scores of other people are defecting to the party.  I am also aware that even people who were no members before are joining. But one fact that cannot be ruled out is that having lots of party members does not translate the party into an election-winning party. We need to make APC an election-winning platform in the state. Let me give you an example, we had a popular candidate in person of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and I thank our party leaders like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who did the magic for us. But you would recall that just a week after that election, during the House of Assembly election, there was a drastic turn-around such that our party lost woefully.

    What was the cause?

I think it had to do with the quality of candidates.  I am not saying that most of those candidates were not quality people, because APC will not field candidates of low quality.  But they were not politically experienced, not politically exposed. They did not know much about mobilisation and strategising. Now, we were aware that a lot of money was rolled into it, but Ondo people are very progressive people, people whom money cannot buy. Now, I know there is high level of poverty in the land, but I know that people of Ondo and Ekiti are principled people. When they make up their mind, they stand by it. What I am saying is that at this stage, APC needs a politician as candidate, a politician who knows his onions; whose name is already a household name in the state- it does not matter where he comes from.  We need somebody who has seen the good and the bad sides of politics; a man who knows how to mibilise people; a man who has contested elections over and over again whether he has won or lost, and I tell you that is where I come in. And for these reasons, some leaders and members of the party in the state, even some civil servants have urged me to join the race. And of course, more importantly, I happen to come from an area which has the preponderance of the voting population in the state, which of course, will translate to victory. I am not going to tell you that Ademola Adegoroye is popular, but how many politicians are more popular than me in the state?

    Which area is that?

I come from Ondo Central- Akure in particular- a place that has never produced a governor in the history of the state.  But mark you, I am not predicating my ambition on the Akure Agenda. Of course, I believe in the Akure Agenda, I believe there must be justice and equity. I believe that Akure is the only division in the state that has not produced the governor. Ondo has done, just like Ikale has. Owo and Akoko have done. So Akure North, Akure South or Ifedore should produce the next governor. That is now left for us. If we want it, we must fight for it. However, I am only saying that is an additional advantage that I have. Besides, my political experience,  I know how many politician in Ondo State, who has the kind of experience I have in politics – I am sorry if I sound immodest, but I know how to strategise for election, how to mobilise people, how to make people to work for that election. By the grace of God, with me taking the ticket of APC, the party can go to bed rest assured of victory.

Jimoh Ibrahim not our member, says Ondo PDP

Aide: he is potent party  man

The Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a businessman, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, at the weekend, traded words over the latter’s membership of the party

Ibrahim, who last week collected his nomination form from factional PDP National Chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was alleged  to have defected to Accord Party by the PDP.

The PDP Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Ayo Fadaka, insisted that Jimoh Ibrahim is no longer a member of the party since he had pitched his tenth with Accord.

Fadaka said: “I can confirm to you that Jimoh Ibrahim is not a member of our party, the PDP. He has since been rid of his membership and we all know that he is a bona fide member of the Accord Party. So, for him now to be making a somersault to pick a form of PDP is a shameless thing anybody can do in this situation.

“Also, I want to confirm to you that Jimoh Ibrahim, apart from the fact that he is not a member of our party, he does not have any relationship with the PDP in any case and if he is taking a form from Sheriff, he confirms to the entire world where Sheriff is coming from.”

Commissioner for Information Mr. Kayode Akinmade said the PDP and the Olusegun Mimiko administration were not bothered by Ibrahim, saying the businessman had never being a loyal member of the PDP.

He alleged that the factional governorship aspirant wanted to play a spoiler role against the state PDP, stressing that the party members were one and there was no crisis within the state PDP chapter.

Akinmade said: “He is not our member. During the last general election, he didn’t work for the PDP; we know who he worked for. As far as we are concerned, there is no cause for alarm. Ondo State PDP is not shaken; we are intact.”

But the Head of Publicity and Research of the Jimoh Ibrahim Campaign Office (JICO), Mr. Sola Akinuli, said the businessman remained a living and potent member of PDP.

Akinuli said: “Our attention has been drawn to the reaction of Mr. Ayo Fadaka to Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s picking gubernatorial form of PDP. We note that it is not uncommon for some people to celebrate falsehood, particularly when it is to please their pay-masters.

“It is common knowledge within the PDP that Dr.  Ibrahim ranks the greatest investor in the PDP project since he joined the party in 2009.

“It is on record that Dr. Ibrahim came in when the fortune of the party was nose-diving and his coming added life and vitality by investing lavishly in the party through capacity-building and by injecting 22 buses for the party’s operations which to date remain operational vehicles at the state and local governments.

“He ensured that rallies were held in the three senatorial districts at nothing less than N10 million per outing. His ‘declaration’ rally remains the greatest and most colourful of all times in Ondo State as it attracted the high and low within the party at that time. Attendees included former President Obasanjo, the late Governor Agagu and a host of others.

“For capacity-building, a “Turn Around” seminar was held at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in July 2014 with representatives from all the 18 local government areas and many egg-heads to diagnose and proffer solutions to the problems of Ondo State. Of special note was the profligacy of the current administration.

“Like any viable and potent politician, there have been overtures from many parties, but he has decided not to abandon his party at this trying time of the current economic recession. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

“He remains a living and potent member of PDP. We also reiterate the fact that Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim is not a nomadic or itinerant politician like the principal of Mr. Ayo Fadaka and employee of the party who has been a beneficiary of Dr. Ibrahim’s goodwill.

“It is, therefore, not only uncouth, but also unethical for an employee of the party to comment on the status of a leader of Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s calibre.”

Ondo gets priority in NDDC budget proposal

Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) acting Managing Director Mrs. Ibim Semenitari said yesterday that Ondo State has been given a preferential treatment in the 2016 budget.

The action, she said, was taken to prevent incessant outcry of marginalisation.

Mrs. Semenitari spoke with reporters in Akure, the state capital, during a two-day training for the agencies’ top management on procurement and due process mechanism.

She said other states were shortchanged this year to ensure that those which produce less oil benefit more.

According to her, projects award in the NDDC states is subject to the production quota policy and the Act establishing the commission.

It stipulates that the states that produce more oil get more projects. There are nine oil producing states.

Mrs. Semenitari said: “This year, in our budget proposal, those who produce more are actually getting a bit less than their production quota; and those

who don’t produce as much are getting more than their production quota.”

She said the motive was to make sure that there won’t be massive variance in the levels of growth in the area.

According to her, it was aimed at achieving even distribution and growth.

The NDDC boss said the commission would embark on projects’ inspection across the state.

She said her last visit to the sites was to ensure that no project was abandoned by contractors.

Mrs. Semenitari said the procurement and due process mechanism training would help public agencies to deliver value for money, so that the tax-payers money can be judiciously used to deliver the people’s needs.
