    • Ibrahim to INEC: I’m candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Judicial Council (NJC), and the Attorney -General of the Federation over alleged unethical conduct and criminal conspiracy to subvert justice in a suit on the party’s governorship candidate.

In separate petitions against Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja and others, the party alleged unethical conduct in the handling of the suit by Prince Biyi Poroye and eight others against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and PDP.

In the petition signed by Ondo PDP Chairman Clement Faboyede, the party said it was taken aback when, on October 14, Justice Abang granted an order directing INEC to substitute the name of Mr Eyitayo Jegede with Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP’s candidate.

The party said the judgment was based on a September 29 motion on notice for the enforcement of an earlier ruling of June 29 in which the applicants sought an order requiring PDP to reject any other nomination forms submitted by any persons apart from Ibrahim.

“When the application which gave rise to the said order of 14th October 2016 was brought , heard and granted, the judge and the counsel were aware that Eyitayo Jegede’s name had been forwarded to the INEC by the PDP as its candidate,” the petitioner said.

It added that Jegede was allegedly not afforded an opportunity to be heard.

But businessman Jimoh Ibrahim slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not immediately recognising him as the candidate.

Relying on the October 14 judgment of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Ibrahim said he remained the authentic candidate of the party in the election.

The suit was jointly filed by the Executive committees of the PDP in Ondo, Osun and Oyo states, with INEC and the PDP as defendants.

Extract from the Justice Okon Abang’s judgment stated: “That INEC shall accept and process for the purpose of its functions and activities in organisation and conduct of Ondo State governorship election only the nomination of Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim who emerged from primary election conducted by the 1st and 2nd judgment creditors/applicants on 29th August, 2016 as the candidate of the PDP in the said Ondo state governorship election slated for November 2016”.

However, INEC had said that it would await the outcome of an appeal against the judgement, expected to be delivered on October 27. The appeal was filed by the Makarfi camp.

But Ibrahim said yesterday that it was out of place for INEC to take such a position.

According to him, the said appeal referred to by INEC was filed by an individual who was not party to the original suit in the first place. He added that there was no appeal against the judgment, insisting that the individual seeking leave to appeal the judgment was an “outsider”.

Ibrahim called for the removal of the Ondo State Resident  Electoral Commissioner (REC) for alleged partisanship.

  • Ondo poll: Group warns judiciary against complicity

The Coalition for Stable Democracy (CSD), an alliance of pro-democracy groups, has urged the National Judicial Council( NJC) to ensure that the interest of justice is served in the struggle for the governorship slot in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The group said the judiciary should not allow itself to be used to subvert people’s will.

CSD said the ruling delivered by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja was a miscarriage of justice.

Justice Abang had last Friday ruled that the name of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, be substituted with that of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim in a controversial ruling that has now been appealed.

In a statement jointly signed by Victor Aderibigbe and Abdullahi Sanni, National Co-ordinator and Secretary respectively, the coalition said the event of 1983 political crisis in Ondo State would be a child’s play if the judiciary allowed itself to be used to truncate the people’s will.

The group alleged that the ruling was part of plot to deprive Jegede’s candidacy to brighten the chance of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the election in Ondo State.

CSD said: “Let it be made clear that Ondo State is a peaceful state, but we are hasty to warn that the people there should not be taken for granted. With the experience of the political crisis that engulfed  the state during the Ajasin/Omoboriowo saga, Ondo election should be treated with utmost caution.

“We are therefore calling on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to pay serious attention to allegations of miscarriage of justice levelled against Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja, in which he ruled that Mr. Eyitayo Jegede’s name be substituted with that of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.

  • Ondo varsity reopens as ASUU suspends strike

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its three-month strike, following an agreement with the school management.

The lecturers declared an indefinite strike last July over the failure of the government to pay their outstanding salaries.

In a statement by the ASUU Chairman, Dr Sola Fayose, after an emergency meeting, the union said it resolved to suspend the strike after the government paid part of the arrears and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the outstanding.

Fayose said the union expected the management and the Governing Council to abide by the MoU to avoid further action.

The university management advised students to resume for completion of the second semester.

A statement by the Registrar, Mr Sunday Ayeerun, urged students to resume as lectures would start immediately.

The campus became lively again, as students returned in droves. The  suspension of the strike was greeted with excitement. Traders, artisans, commercial motorcyclists and mini-bus drivers, who are mostly patronised by students, expressed relief, saying the community was  comatose when the school was shut.

Students’ Union Government (SUG) President Adegbola Odunyemi said: “We are happy about the news. Although the effects of the strike on students are unquantifiable, we thank God that we are back to complete the 2015/2016 academic session.

“We want both ASUU and management to look for other means of settling their differences, rather than embarking on strike. The state government should also improve on its subvention to the university. Recession notwithstanding, the government should commit itself to funding the school so that it will be able to meet up with its statutory obligations.”

  • Ondo: Akoko gives rousing welcome to Abraham

Ondo: Akoko gives rousing welcome to Abraham

The people of Akoko land in Ondo State yesterday trooped out to receive their son, Olusegun Abraham, the first runner-up in the disputed September 3 shadow election of the All Progressives Congress (APC)  for governorship election in the state. It would be the first time the industrialist cum politician will be visiting Akoko since the primary election.

The crowd had converged from the four local government areas in Akoko to give him a rousing welcome. Abraham said the visit was necessary and timely, and it was aimed at appreciating the selfless and unflinching support of his kinsmen, and to also reassure them of his readiness to reclaim the “stolen” mandate of the people.

Speaking in his local dialect, Abraham said, “I appreciate your unflinching support so far my people. You are just the best. I appreciate our elders, mothers, the youth, the children and every indigene of Akoko that have stood firm for justice. I assure you that your faith in me, which you have reposed in getting your rightful mandate, will not fail”.

“It is unfortunate that some people within the APC, the people we all now know, employed fraudulent means to rob us of our right by colluding with elements outside our state. But, I assure you that by the grace of God, we will get back our mandate. Don’t listen to the naysayers and liars. I am not leaving this party. Our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is not leaving the party. We are already in court to seek redress, and more so, we are still in talks within the party ranks to get back our stolen mandate.

“Fact and figures don’t lie. A fraud was committed. Some people connived to pad our delegates lists, disenfranchised close to 200 delegates and substituted them with fake ones. That’s a fact that was established by the Electoral Appeal committee, but wrongfully vetoed by Oyegun. But be rest assured, victory is coming and our mandate will be reclaimed,” he assured.

He also told them to debunk and distance themselves from any rumour that associates him with Olusola Oke’s Alliance for Democracy (AD), stating that he won’t form any alliance with people who were instrumental in thwarting the clear chance of Akoko to produce the next governor of the state. He added that such people, who were even new in the APC at the time, could not be trusted to represent the interest of the people as it was clear they are only interested in fulfilling their own political ambitions.

  • Ondo’s unfinished business

The Ondos and Ekitis are two of a kind.  Impetuous, riotous and quick-tempered on issue of injustice with added reputation for violence against hawkish politicians. In the first republic when late Chief Remi Fani-Kayode said he and Akintola would win the election whether the people voted or not, they ensured those who sowed the wind reaped the whirlwind. In 1983, they ensured that the victory of NPN Omoboriowo attributed to what was tagged ‘NPN landslide and sea-slide’ victories, was short-lived. Fayose escaped in the booth of his car when the people took up arms following his impeachment during his first coming before coming back with a vengeance in 2014 supported  with President Jonathan’s awesome security apparatus and $1.4b slush fund ferried by Obanikoro in three aircrafts to carry out the pacification of the Ekiti land.

Mimiko and Fayose, the PDP leading light in the states are also two of a kind. In an area where it is drummed into children’s ears from their formative years that “eiyele ki ba onile je, ba onile mu, ki osa ni ojo isoro) literarily meaning you must never betray your benefactor, they both have a history of drifting loyalty. Withdrawing his support for Sherrif, the embattled factional leader of PDP recently, an unrestrained Fayose came out to ask a rhetorical question: “If you promised to marry a lady and you discovered she was HIV positive a day to the wedding, would you go on with the wedding”. Unfortunately such is the weight Fayose and Mimiko his friend attach to loyalty in communities where loyalty is a cherished value. We could not have forgotten  so soon  how the duo, not too long ago foisted Sherrif on PDP in spite of warning by Femi Fani-Kayode, their soul mate  that Sheriif would be a liability to their party. But Sheriff, a veteran of political intrigue is not going to allow the duo have the last laugh. He has consequently reached out to Jimoh Ibrahim with whom Mimiko has an unfinished battle over Ondo which each sees as his fiefdom.  And Jimoh Ibrahim, a man never known to do anything in half measures has attacked Mimiko at his weakest-months of unpaid salaries of workers.

Declaring self the new messiah for Ondo State workers, he had said “I will pay the workers within the first day of my 100 days in office. Non-payment of salaries by state government is the failure of innovation of states by governors. It is when you are innovative that you will be able to pay salaries. Those (governors) who are owing are not efficient. I’m not owing any of my workers”.

Desperate Ondo workers are likely going to listen to whoever promises to lift their burden even if they are being hoodwinked. Unfortunately the media that should serve as a guide is heavily compromised. Jimoh Ibrahim knows as a publisher that the Nigerian media is a place where dogs don’t eat dogs. Media houses where salaries are seldom paid as at when due if paid at all lack the courage to remind him that many of his Daily Newswatch, Daily Mirror and even Global Fleet staff were said not to have been paid for several months. And of course no one is asking how a business man who after outwitting Virgin Atlantic to buy Air Nigeria which collapsed few months after collecting government bail-out will manage a more complex institution.

However, scared Mimiko is still haunted by his last 2011 Akure Airport encounter with Ibrahim. As reported by The Compass of March 30, 2011, “When the governor moved to greet him, he pointed angrily in his face, shouting: Look, I am not interested in your greetings. I will ensure that we make this state ungovernable for you. Yes, you may be the governor. We may not be able to milk the cow but we can spill the milk. I said my own and I will deal with you and your bunch of rabble rousers. Yes, just wait”.  Mimiko, the newspaper added, escaped by scampering into his helicopter after which he later issued a statement saying “We want to warn that the era of gunpoint democracy is gone; the people of the state are no animals to be captured and caged at will. The police and other security agencies should take judicial note of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s vow of violence and be on the lookout.”

Mimiko and Fayose clearly understand that their caustic-tongued adversary, a ruthless fighter, is not afraid of a public fight. They have therefore decided not to take chances. Having dumped Obasanjo, their benefactor and squandered the goodwill of those on whose back they rode to power, they have opted to take their case to the patient God of the Christians who does not want the death of a sinner but his repentance. Last Sunday, the duo was together at the thanksgiving service at the 15th annual convention of the Riches in Christ Evangelical Mission to seek God’s help in the face of Ibrahim’s challenge. But for its tragic consequences, we would have taken their comedy of errors with a big laugh. After all, God is not mocked.

But sadly we for instance now know, courtesy of Dr Temitope Aluko, the estranged PDP secretary in Ekiti that the vote of Ekiti people, long  maligned for voting Fayose under the influence of ‘stomach infrastructure’,  did not count since the result of the election according to  him had been prepared two days before the voting. We also now know courtesy of EFCC, that the people did not benefit from Jonathan $1.4b slush fund. While a fraction of it was expended on the security men brought in from Abuja and Enugu to perfect the scientific rigging,  the bulk of it was kept by Fayose who according to EFCC, expended it on  choice properties within his first three months in office. At a time when Mimiko served as Jonathan’s chief image launderer in the South-west, when dollars were moved around with boxes, and chieftains of PDP received billions, except Chief Olu Falae who admitted collecting a paltry N100m, ordinary  Ondo people were never part the dollar and naira bazaar.

And while Mimiko and Ibrahim battle over Ondo which both have come to regard as a fiefdom continues, the unfolding tragedy in APC seems to have also reminded us that ’the beautiful ones are not yet born’. A panel set up by APC chairman confirmed the primary was rigged and recommended a rerun. The chairman however set the report of the panel aside and submitted Akeredolu’s name to INEC. Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the party publicly attacked Oyegun asking him to resign. Meanwhile demonstration by supporters of Dr Olusegun Abraham continues in Ikare over what they described as the theft of his mandate. Other contestants are threatening fire and brimstone. The question we should be asking is whether these guys are out to serve the Ondo people or themselves. Why has the quest to serve become ‘do or die affair ‘both in PDP and APC?

Femi Okunronmu an Afenifere chieftain and Jonathan supporter in the last election has called for the dissolution of both APC and PDP as both according to him are party of looters. I however think we must keep the parties no matter how defective since we need parties as modernizing agents. What we should find answer to is why people go to government to steal. And the simple answer is that people steal what they think belong to others. After all, funds contributed for community projects are never stolen at the village level. If it happens, the culprits are ostricised.

With restructuring and fiscal federalism, those who think they can get away with stealing from themselves are free to do so. The Ekitis and Ondos are the custodians of special palm wine and sacrificial dog needed to invoke the awesome power of Ogun, the god of iron, of thunder and of violent death. African Philosophy has taught us our small gods are potent if we have faith.

  • ‘Ondo’ll witness positive change’

    ‘Ondo’ll witness positive change’

THE governorship candidate of Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), is optimistic that the Sunshine State will witness positive change with the party in the saddle.

He spoke at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), where he was honoured by its alumni association.

The former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) received the “Role Model Award” in recognition of his professional integrity and contribution to the growth of democracy.

The APC candidate, who was represented by an Akure lawyer, Henry Adegbemile, thanked the organisers of the award and assured them of his commitment to the association.

Akeredolu expressed the belief that the state of affairs would witness positive change with the progressive party governing Ondo State.

He used the occasion to sympathise with workers over their unpaid salaries.

The lawyer challenged them to vote out the reactionary government of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging them to be ready to be part of the in-coming APC administration,” which will make their matter a priority”.

  • Ondo governorship: Businessman Arigbede emerges PRP’s candidate

Ondo governorship: Businessman Arigbede emerges PRP’s candidate

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has named a businessman, Chief Rowland Arigbede as its governorship candidate for the November 26 election.

The primary election which was held in Akure, the state capital was contested by two aspirants.

At the event, which was attended by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Arigbede scored 53 votes to beat his rival, Mr. Oluwasesan Oladele, who scored nine votes.

A vote was voided in the poll which had by 63 delegates from the 18 local governments.

Oladele accepted defeat and promised to work for the party and its candidate.

Arigbede vowed never to use the ticket giving to him by the delegates to trade with other party candidates for monetary purpose.

The PRP candidate who is from Ifedore local government said he decided to contest in the election because he has a vision of industrializing the state.

He said if elected, he would concentrate on revamping all the moribund agricultural farm settlements which he said twould provide employment for the people and also focus on infrastructure.

He claimed that he has the political structure to win the governorship poll.

Arigbede said he has observed that the masses are tired of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) and they are eagerly waiting for a fresh party to rule the state.

The event was attended by PRP national leaders led by its Deputy National Chairman, Mr. Francis Akinjumi.

  • ‘Ondo APC should unite’

    ‘Ondo APC should unite’

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Princess Omowunmi Olatunji has urged party chieftains to unite, ahead of the governorship poll.

She called on  them to work for a smooth and transparent primary.

The former member of the Lagos State House of Assemby spoke at a meeting with traders from 18 local government areas in Akure, the state capital.

She said: “ The long awaited hope of Ondo State is around the corner, but we need peace, orderliness, perseverance and love to have a free and fair primary.

“We have patiently waited for this time. Tthe people of this state have suffered a lot. We have been deprived of the dividends of democracy and good governance by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government”.

Olatunji assured that the party will empower market women and youths, if voted into power.

She urged party leaders to close ranks and embrace peace to ensure victory at the poll.

Olatunji said:  “We need to be orderly and peacefully choose a candidate that will deliver Ondo State from the PDP for us to enjoy good governance, free education, free health, goods roads, affordable housing scheme for all, women empowerment, and job opportunities for our youths”.

The politician, who donated N500,000 towards woemen empowerment urged the women to seal their cordial relations with the APC by voting for the party.

  • ‘Ondo APC is one family’

    ‘Ondo APC is one family’

Steve Otaloro is the Director of Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ondo State. He spoke with DAMISI OJO on the preparations for the governorship elections, the rumour of endorsement and other issues.

How prepared is the APC for  the governorship election in Ondo State?

Naturally, the ultimate desire of any person or team taking part in a competition is to win and bring home laurel. In the last governorship election in Ondo State, the defunct ACN that formed part of the present APC went into that election with all available resources to wrestle power from the then Labour party that sponsored Dr. Mimiko for his second term but unfortunately, the ACN lost.

You know the failure of the ACN then was not due to weakness or unpreparedness. To me, the loss of that contest was due largely to the inability of the party to reduce itself to the level of the electorates in Ondo State. Mistakenly, the APC placed itself above the level of the voters by assuming that the genuine programmes rolled out for implementation to better the lot of the people on assumption of office were enough to win the election, rather than the artificial incentives packaged for voters on the election day by the Labour Party (LP).

Unfortunately, the role played by poverty in the last election in Ondo State was enormous. You can imagine a funny slogan in the state some few days to the election when you find on the lips of most prospective voters the slogan of “Edibo ese bee”, vote and cook soup,  which sadly meant vote for Mimiko and be given money to enable you prepare soup for your meal. If you ask us how much were the voters given by the Labour Party then, I will tell you that the token was as ridiculously low as N500.

While that N500 meant so much to some people at that material time, the ACN overrated these set of people who were largely the actual voters in the State by conceding to them the ability to vote rightly even if they decided to take the money earmarked for buying their votes and see it as their share from the common patrimony.

The APC has since gone back to the drawing board to see where things went wrong with the ACN in that election in 2012 and strongly tie the loose ends to approach the coming election with more pragmatic objectives; one, by educating the people more on the consequences of allowing material incentives to influence their voting and two, by designing programmes that will bring relief to already improvished homes and promoting such with all sense of sincerity.

In a nutshell, I’m assuring you, the APC is honestly ready for the November election in Ondo State. God bless the appointed date of November 26, 2016.

With governorship aspirants in the party, how do you intend to manage the primary?

The high number of aspirants in our party showing interest in the governorship is meant to demonstrate the strength and the quality of available human resources in the party. If you care to look at the background of these party members jostling for the nomination as the party’s flagbearer, you’ll no doubt see that they are all worthy materials, eminently qualified individuals who can win an election for the party at any given time.

The question of managing these aspirants, to me, for the primary does not even arise because they themselves are quite aware that only one of them will be eventually picked to fly the party’s flag at the election and they know that whoever wins will have to be supported to win the election itself. You are no doubt aware that after the primary which will be free and fair, the structures of the rest aspirants will be collapsed to a single one to present a strong and common front to face whoever emerges from the camp of other political parties.

Why are some chieftains protesting against the party chairman, Isaac Kekemeke?

It is normal in any political process. The chairman had denied the allegations and clarified all issues raised. The few aggrieved members and the state exco have been invited to Abuja by the National Secretariat where the disagreement would be settled amicably. It is a family issue. Kekemeke remains the chairman of the party.

Do you think your party has what it takes to take over the state from the PDP that is currently ruling the state?

Let’s thank God for the fact that the ruling party in Ondo State, the PDP, has divinely shot itself in the foot to become incapacitated, thus, loosing the energy to match the APC with the required confidence at the poll. If you look back at the way Dr. Mimiko has been steering the ship of the State in the last three and a half years after securing his second term, you will see that his policies have turned many homes to graveyards, husbands to wives, children to beggars, in spite of the huge mineral and economic resources that abound in the State.

Today, all the workers and pensioners who gave him the open support during the last campaigns/election are groaning in pains, regretting their support because he has refused to make them happy partners  by refusing to pay them their monthly salaries for a record of five months.

When you leave the workers’ camp, come to the entire populace in the State, Dr. Mimiko has touched their lives negatively with many obnoxious policies, throwing them into a state of hopelessness by utter neglect and introduction of various levies without commensurate service to make the people live a meaningful life.

How will the governorship candidate of your party emerge?

The governorship candidate of the APC will emerge through the traditional primary. I can assure you that there will be no imposition from any quarter as reiterated and reinforced severally by the Chairman, Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke. As you had earlier identified, we have many candidates showing interest in flying the flag and you can see that all of them are already in the field talking to members throughout the length and breadth of the state.

In a contest like this, some will make it to the top while some will opt for re-alignment for one reason or the other. Eventually, when the primary comes, based on individual candidate’s effort, industry and acceptability, a candidate will emerge and I believe, whoever emerges would be the one that will be acceptable to all of them in the contest because of the level of transparency and neutrality that will be displayed by the party and its leadership.

There are speculations that your party may not conduct the primary election.  How far is this true?

This view is not for the enlightened and sophisticated members of the All Progressives Congress. Our primary has been fixed for  Saturday, September 3. You see, our party is not a party of deceit, it is not a single man’s business empire where anybody can just wake up one day and give instructions and that instruction will be binding. That is dictatorship. We say this is APC where there’s equality. For your information, if it is the desire of the Party to impose candidate, there will be no reason to allow all the interested aspirants to throw up their resources, the resources that can be deployed to further develop the Party to run after non-existent or already compromised position.

I, therefore, plead that our aspirants should simply ignore this unfounded and irritating view of the opposition aimed at maligning the party and pursue their ambition with the view that their party will never toy with their ambition or disappoint them with any hidden agenda to truncate their ambition. Let me assure you that the positive way we conduct our primary will push other parties to turn and learn from the APC for guidance.

Is it true that the National Leader of your party, Senator Bola Tinubu, has a preferred person among the aspirants.

This is clearly one of the many amusing behaviours that some people employ in an occasion like this just to demoralise others in the race. You remember, the National leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, has never proclaimed anybody as his candidate. Of course, candidates, like in the days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, were dropping his name to achieve their political ambition without the knowledge or the express permission of the great Awo. And this time around, with the level to which God has helped Asiwaju to attain politically in our country, I won’t be surprised if any of the aspirants or just anybody even outside our party is using his name to achieve one or two things for self aggrandisement.

In a nutshell, the National Leader has no anointed candidate. To borrow from Mr. President’s popular words, “Asiwaju is for everybody and for nobody”. His position is for everybody to face the primary and whoever emerges will then be the party’s standard bearer and be supported by the Party.

How will you assess the Mimiko administration  in the last seven and half years?

You see, I will describe Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as an exceedingly lucky man who came into the life of Ondo State when fate actually beckoned on him and when the people were yearning for a change, either consciously or unconsciously, but largely due to orchestrated conspiracy against Dr. Olusegun Agagu, the then governor of the state.

What is the take of the APC on the zoning of Governorship position in the state?

Zoning? Is there anything like that in APC? If there is, it is not to my knowledge. Don’t forget, the APC is a party that believes in democratic process. Like I said earlier, the APC will never have any clandestine arrangement in place to pick its candidate and allow other aspirants to deploy their resources to unproductive venture. That is wickedness and that is even capable of making members to loose confidence in any party that does that. On this note, I am reiterating that whoever emerges at the APC primary among the aspirants will  be supported by the rest of the aspirants to represent the party as our standard bearer at the poll and he will win the gubernatorial election and become the next governor of Ondo State by God’s grace.

  • In Ondo, democracy will take its course

In Ondo, democracy will take its course

As the race for the Ondo governorship heats up, the signs are so clear that the APC is on course towards achieving remarkable success in the November 27 election. This is evident, for instance, in the sheer number of aspirants that have expressed interest in flying the APC’s flag in the election. This is indicative of the immense goodwill the party enjoys in the state and the confidence among the aspirants of the exceedingly bright chances of the APC especially against the background of abysmal performance of the PDP-led administration in the last eight years.

It is not unusual in the context of such intense competition for the ticket of a popular party like the APC, that there will be diverse allegations, insinuations and innuendoes as regards the transparency, impartiality and integrity of the intra-party process. This has always been the case in all party primaries in the country since 1999. But no one can doubt that the APC has always demonstrated its commitment to demonstrably credible intra-party primaries at all levels. This was evident in last year’s presidential primaries as well as the transparent intra-party polls to pick candidates in Kogi and Edo states for example.

As the highest-ranking party leader from Ondo State, I strongly affirm that the Ondo APC governorship primaries will be no exception. The APC as a party is committed to a free, fair and transparent process that will see the candidate with the most votes emerge as flag bearer. And from that moment on, the party, other contenders and the leadership will line up behind that flag bearer. To insinuate a contrary plan without any evidence is political mischief and we must be wary of those pushing this agenda to weaken the APC ahead of the governorship elections.

The screening of all 24 candidates took place in a most transparent manner at the national headquarters in Abuja. Candidates have seen that they have been screened with no intention to disqualify anyone. Each candidate has a right to contest in the race. With the screening concluded, all that sailed through have the clear to campaign as hard as they want. Their concentration should shift to how they will become the choice of the electorate or become the candidate of choice by the electorate. All said and done, the people, in this case the delegates will ultimately decide.

The attempt to scapegoat the chairman of the party and a few other leaders is unnecessary distraction. The primary will be conducted by the national headquarters of the APC based on the constitution of the party and not the whims of any state party chairman. The delegates’ list is under lock and key. Any complaints can be channeled through me to the national headquarters.

Those attacking and cursing and encouraging hooliganism are only working to weaken the party. They might even be agents of destabilization.

For each of the aspirants, victory will only be delivered based on the number of people they are able to convince to vote for them and ultimately how they square against our political opponent, the PDP.

Just like in other party primaries both within and even in the most advanced countries, influential party leaders throw their support behind aspirants they believe can best represent the party’s values and ethos as well as help achieve victory in the general election. In the ongoing electoral process in the United States, for instance, Hillary Clinton became her party’s candidate largely with the support of the Democratic Party establishment while Donald Trump emerged triumphant in the Republican Party because the party rank and file defied the preferences of the party establishment. The most important determinant of the emergence of a democratic party’s candidate, therefore, is the will of the majority of the accredited party delegates. It is certainly an unfair underestimation of the intellect and character of the people of Ondo State to insinuate that 3000 delegates will have no minds of their own and can be herded in a given direction through any form of ‘imposition’ or ‘endorsement’. Indeed, once the party principle of free and fair primaries is adhered to the last letter, terms like imposition and endorsement become irrelevant and diversionary.

It shall be no different with the Ondo State APC primaries. Endorsement or no endorsement, the most acceptable candidate will emerge in a free and fair process. Of course, it is only natural that some of those who have invested so much of their time, energy, intellect and other resources in the emergence of the APC as the formidable force it is today may throw their weight behind aspirants of their choice. There is nothing in the APC constitution that forbids this. Such speculations, however, lie within the realm of speculation and rumor. The critical factor is that no one can alter the delegates’ list. Once the candidate emerges, we the party leadership who have the responsibility will lead the campaign. No one who wishes the APC success in the general election will encourage any undemocratic manipulation of the intra-party selection process. I therefore congratulate all who successfully scaled through the screening process and enjoin them to canvass vigorously for the support of the delegates so that we have a truly keen, fair and free intra party primaries as a step to resounding victory in the governorship election proper.
