    Charly Boy, Femi Kuti, Daddy Showkey pay tribute to Onyeka Onwenu

    Singer and activist, Charly Boy, afrobeat musician Femi Kuti, and “Galala” singer Daddy Showkey have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late Onyeka Onwenu.

    Charly Boy described Onwenu as an iconic figure whose impact went beyond the entertainment industry, and whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

    “The Igbo nation mourns the loss of this iconic figure, whose impact transcended the entertainment industry.

    “Onwenu’s death follows the recent passings of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, marking a period of profound loss for the southeast region of Nigeria.

    “Onwenu’s legacy as a cherished talent and tireless advocate will continue to inspire future generations. Oh! My sister, Rest In Peace”, he wrote. 

    Femi Kuti expressed shock at the news, remembering Onwenu’s beautiful voice and offering condolences to her family and loved ones.

    “Shocked, waking up to very sad news of the passing of Mrs Onyeka Onwenu. Rest in peace Ma, your beautiful voice will live forever. Condolences to her family and loved ones.”

    Daddy Showkey shared a photo of Onwenu on his Instagram page, bidding her farewell and acknowledging the unexpected nature of her passing.

    “RIP Great Legend Onyeka Onwenu. Nobody know the news wey you go hear when you wake up in morning”, he wrote.

    Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, says she is downcast and hurt by the news of the death of music icon, Onyeka Onwenu.

    Onwenu reportedly collapsed after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okolie, Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, on Tuesday in Lagos.

    She was said to have been rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she reportedly passed away.

    Reacting to Onwenu’s death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Enugu, Ozokwor described it as painful and hurting.

    “Onyeka is not just a colleague but a friend. I am downcast now and hurting because of her death and for the fact that she was not sick.

    “How can everyone be dying like that, what is causing so much death? Everyone is stressed up in this country,” she said.

    NAN reports that Onwenu was born in 1952.

    She began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.

    She has since released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song, “One Love”.

    Onwenu has also acted in several Nollywood films and won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film.

    In addition to her entertainment career, Onwenu has also been involved in politics.

    She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.

    She was awarded the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

    President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Onyeka Onwenu, a legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter, actor, journalist and an activist.

    In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 31, by his Special adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu celebrated Onwenu’s life and legacy, highlighting her significant contributions to the entertainment industry and her impact on society through her music.

    He specifically mentioned her iconic song “One Love”, which promoted unity and harmony in the 1990s, and her collaboration with King Sunny Ade on “Wait for Me”, a song that advocated for family planning in the 1980s.

    The President condoled with the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and Onwenu’s numerous fans over the loss, praying for the repose of her soul.

    He acknowledged that Onwenu’s immortal masterpieces will continue to live on, ensuring her legacy endures.

    “President Tinubu mourns the passing of the Queen of Songs, whose edifying and mellifluous rendition of ‘One Love’ in the 1990s evoked a fervour of fellowship and harmony.

    “The President recalls the many artistic interventions of the late musical icon in promoting the public good, noting her classic collaboration with King Sunny Ade on ‘Wait for Me’, a melodic campaign on family planning in the 1980s.”

    “Ms Onwenu lives on in her immortal masterpieces,” the President stated.

    Nigerians have started paying tributes to legendary musician Onyeka Onwenu who died at 72 on Tuesday night. 

    Onwenu collapsed after performing at a birthday party in Lagos and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

    Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to express their shock and sadness at the news. 

    Many have shared tributes and condolences, praising Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian music and her iconic status as the “Queen of Vocals”.

    17 things to know about legendary late singer Onyeka Onwenu

    Legendary musician Onyeka Onwenu died on Tuesday, July 30 in Lagos.

    She reportedly collapsed after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okolie, Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

    Here are 17 things to know about Onyeka Onwenu:

    1. She was born January 31, 1952 to the family of  Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu.

    2. Her father died when she was four years old in an auto crash, a week before his appointment as Minister for Education

    3. Onwenu possessed a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York.

    4. She worked for the United Nations as a tour guide before returning to Nigeria in 1980 to complete her mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), in Lagos, Nigeria.

    5. While at NTA she wrote internationally acclaimed BBC/NTA documentary on corruption in Nigeria, titled Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches in 1984

    6. She began her recording career in 1981 while still with the NTA, releasing the album For the Love of You

    7. Originally a secular artist, Onwenu made the transition to gospel music in the 90s, and most of her songs are self-written.

    11. Onwenu was a member of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP). 

    12. She contested twice to become Chairperson of her Local Government, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State and lost at both attempts.

    13. Onwenu was appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former governor Ikedi Ohakim.

    14. On 16 September 2013, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

    15. Onwenu kept her personal life private and often refused to disclose private information regarding her ex-husband.

    16. She is survived by her two children – Tijani Charles and Abraham.

    Music legend, Onyeka Onwenu, popularly dubbed as the “Elegant Stallion” has died at 72.

    Onwenu reportedly collapsed after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okolie, Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, on Tuesday in Lagos.

    She was said to have been rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she reportedly passed away.

    A source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals tonight.

    “After performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Onwenu was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State.

    She began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.

    Life Lager, the beer brand renowned for celebrating the culture of the South East people has added another landmark achievement to its growing list of successful consumer engagements.

    After a keenly contested showpiece, Chijioke Charles emerged as the winner of the singing category and Ofu Obi Dance Troupe won in the dance category. They were given cheques.

  • Hymnodia to boost religious tourism with hymns

    Founder of Hymnodia Lagos, Kufre Ekanem has expressed optimism over the role of hymns in advancing Nigeria’s religious tourism across globe.

    Ekanem said Hymnodia Reality Show will be aired regularly on Lagos Television every Sunday till April 25,  at 4: pm.

    Already, he disclosed that Royal School of Church Music (RSCM} has entered into a partnership arrangement aimed at supporting 14 hymntestants for a year course in United Kingdom.

    According to Ekanem, RSCM has a mandate to set standard for church music around the world, noting that this is a helpful contribution for Hymnodia team to accept responsibilities to keep the standards.

    In a recent chat, Ekanem who is also the Managing Director, Philosoville Ltd said “It is pertinent to note that  countries like Canada, Scotland and England are ready to partner with the non-denomination activities known as  Hymnodia; by so doing, audience will explore the nation’s tourism destinations. We have entries in India United States, UK and from other parts of Africa”.

    Speaking further, Ekanem said “we are going to sing hymn in a way that it would be entertaining, educating and edifying. The whole essence of Hymnodia is to reignite the culture of hymn singing, hymn writing and hymn making.

    He noted that they use the classes to have them sing hymns, write hymns, create hymns, adding at every stanza they performed for live audience strive to see, that they could be vote and win the Asaph.

    Ekanem said that Asaph which is a specially created trophy named after David Chief Choir Master in the bible, comes with five million Naira cash and a brand new car.

    “One person can win the prize every year”, he said.

    “Most of the sounds in the bible that are generally called the psalms of David were written by Asaph wholot who was his chief choir master. It shows that people write the sound and that it was written by human beings. We have chosen to honor him with prize of the Hymnodia competition.

    “Along this fact, 14 hymntestants came from diverse part of the country and they came from different denominations but the diversity is there.   Hymns, worships, God are the three constant things, he pointed out.”

    The show witnessed Country Director of RSCM Mr. Sunday Olawuwo, Onyeka Onwenu as well as Dupe Igekachi as panelists.

    He identified rhyming, synthetic discipline among others as different dimensions of hymn discipline, reiterating, hymns, worships and God himself are three things that are constant.

    Narrating how the Hymnodia idea started, he said “I have been thinking of Hymnodia for 10 years. I later presented the idea with friends and built it up. With the demands of my earlier career in the corporate world, I couldn’t do well that time. However, due to the passion I have, I took a break from the corporate world to start Hymnodia”, Ekanem said.

     

     

  • Genevieve takes Nollywood to Netflix

    With ‘Lionheart’ as her directorial debut, Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji, premiered her movie at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF, in Canada.

    The movie which stars Genevieve herself, Peter Okoye, NkemOwoh, Pete Edochie, Onyeka Onwenu and others, was reportedly acquired by Netflix hours before its TIFF  premiere, making history as the first Netflix original film from Nigeria.

    The movie, which had the chance to be screened and accepted internationally, before coming home, was rated top, coming from an actress who is known to be selective in scripts acceptance from the beginning of her career, which has made her one of the top rated actresses.

    Some reviews have tongue-lashed Genevieve for not adhering to the processes involved in getting movies to the Nigerian cinemas. However, following a private screening on December 21, Genevieve announced that the film would finally be screened at selected cinemas.

    Nnaji started her acting career as a child actress in the then popular television soap opera ‘Ripples’ at the age of 8. In 1998 at the age of 19, she was introduced into the growing Nigerian film industry with the movie ‘Most Wanted’. Her subsequent movies include: ‘Last Party’, ‘Mark of the Beast’ and ‘Ijele’.

    In 2010 she starred in the award-winning film’ Ijé: The Journey’.

    As at 2009, Nnaji was one of the best paid actresses in Nollywood.

    Due to her contributions to the Nigeria movie industry, she became the first actress to be awarded Best Actress at the 2001 City Peoples Awards, the award ceremony that previously had only recognized politicians and business conglomerates. She was also the first actress to be awarded as Best Actress by the Censors Board of Nigeria in 2003.

    A new historical movie, The Chronicles, from the stables of Frank Records is set to hit cinemas nationwide on November 9, 2018.

    Force with taunts of coming from Mbaise, Imo State, two teenagers seek to understand why their ancestry is made fun of. At their insistence, their parents take them to their grandmother (Onyeka Onwenu) who spends the night telling them the story.

    The movie which was produced by Frank Ufomadu and directed by Caliph Ibn.Uzar stars Onyeka Onwenu, Segun Arinze, Victor Osuagwu, Daniel Llyod, Giovanni Grossman (Italian) Avinanash Bhavanni (British/Indian) Agbogidi Clemson, Felix Omorkhodion, Okey Jude and Zikky Alloy.

    Written by Ufomadu, ‘The Chronicles’ sought to reveal how the the saying ‘Spare the snake and kill the man’ came about during the pre and post colonial era in the eastern part of the country, and how a particular musical band falsified the belief to include the Mbaise man.

    “I was in secondary school when I heard about the stigma of that afage about Mbaise people,” Ufomadu said.

    “I asked from my people but I couldn’t get an answer.

    ” Actually, that adage came from a band, Oriental Brothers but many people didn’t know what transpired between the Oriental Brothers that led to that adage. It was out of ignorance of one of the Oriental Brothers who never knew what is joint account.”
