  • Behold, the low-cut queens

SOME styles are always in sync with fashion, no matter what. The low-cut hairstyle is one with a long staying power. It is now quite popular among celebrities. Hardly would you get to a social or corporate event without finding one brave soul spotting a low-cut hairstyle in a sea of weaves and attachments.

But for decades before now, some celebrities have rocked the style religiously. It is also remarkable that these women have stayed true to the style even as the fashion scene changed and people embrace and dispose other hairstyles the way politicians switch political parties.

Some of the most popular Nigerian celebrities sporting this unique style are iconic singer Onyeka Onwenu fondly called the elegant stallion by her teeming fans; development economist, former Minister of Education and human rights activist Oby Ezekwesili; world-acclaimed arts curator, Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye and Nollywood actress, film producer and director Shan George.

Those who are just embracing this style can look up to these super brave women for inspiration. They have been rocking the low hair cut trend for decades and have remained relevant even when they have refused to jump on the bandwagon of latest hairstyles. It takes courage for a woman to cut her healthy and long hair and to stick to the style for decades.

However, it is also a smart thing to do because short hair has its advantages. It can be used to make a powerful fashion or style statement. Any woman who walks to an event or a place with low cut hair is bound to draw serious attention. The style is also less expensive to maintain and also less time-consuming. It is simply a matter of finding the kind of cut that fits the shape of your head and face and getting it done.

But before you rush to cut your hair, please note that cutting your hair super short is a big change that will require bravery and serious commitment. Do you care for a change of look?  If you are thinking about chopping-off some length, look no further than these famous lady personalities who have sported low haircuts for ages and are still looking great!

If in doubt, check out these selected photos of Onyeka, Oby and Shan rocking low cut for low/short hair inspiration.

Onyeka Onwenu takes music distributors to court

Veteran musician, Onyeka Onwenu was at the Lagos High Court yesterday, where her N205million suit against Iroking, a music and movie distributor was heard.

The elegant stallion, as she is fondly called, had on Sunday, sent a public broadcast announcing her legal move over an alleged copyright infringement, which she described as “massive violation of my musical copyright dues and the illegal exploitation of my intellectual property.”

She said: “For years, Iroking profited from the sale of my music, even after a two-year contract it signed with me had elapsed. For years, also, they denied that they were doing so, they denied that they had made any profits from their illegal exploits.

“When they were caught in the lie, they wanted to settle but refused to show up for meetings.

“Iroking as a Company is arrogant and has no regard for the people, Artistes whose works and labor have made them successful.

“We are therefore suing to make a point. Artistes have a right to profit from their Intellectual Property and labor. Nigeria has Copyright Laws which ought to be respected. The music industry has been built up and sustained by artistes and entrepreneurs like me. I demand to be protected by the Laws of my Country. Iroking must pay for this violation.”

Onwenu urged other artistes to be vigilant, and wake up to their rights, especially in the internet era.

“It is also my hope that other Artistes will wake up and demand for what is due them. Many do not know that their music is being exploited on YouTube and other carriers. Some Record Companies are selling our music on the internet and claiming ownership of the Copyright. If only we would pay attention, Artistes would discover that while they had been doing all the creative work, investing in their careers and in the industry at large, someone else is collecting all the profit. Enough is Enough! Arise Nigerian artistes and take back what belongs to you. You have been cheated for far too long,” she said.

  • I NEVER HAD AN AFFAIR WITH ONYEKA ONWENU–KING SUNNY ADE

I NEVER HAD AN AFFAIR WITH ONYEKA ONWENU–KING SUNNY ADE

For over 40 years, he has plied his trade all over the world, thrilling lovers of his brand of music. Now clocking 70, there is no better time to crown him the King of Juju music than now. OVWE MEDEME reports that King Sunday Adeniyi, popularly known as KSA, has lived a fulfilled life, by his own admittance.

FIELDING questions from journalists recently on the preparations for the celebration of his 70th birthday, he touched on several things as they affect his long career. One of those is on the issue of whether he harbours any fear, having come this far in life.

“The only fear I used to have is; I don’t know when God will say stop giving your fans what I have. But that has stopped because God does his things in his own way,” he revealed.

One of the turning points of his career own the family planning campaign duet, Wait For Me, he did with fellow veteran, Onyeka Onwenu. The success the song garnered came with its downside. However, KSA took advantage of the opportunity to dispel the age long rumour that he had an affair with Onyeka Onwenu.

Explaining, he said that any talk about having an affair with the songstress was to promote song. “Do I have a crush; she’s a good sister. She’s my colleague. Recently, we played together and before then, if you remember the day I played with Wizkid, she was also there. We are colleagues,” he said.

Comparing the music of yesteryear with today’s music, he said. “Yesteryears have come to stay.”

“For the new generation that is coming now the difference, I’m proud to say is that I’m playing indigenous music. What they are playing today is computer music. It doesn’t mean I cannot use computer, but I have to be very careful of what I use it for.  Any music that sells well, the world buys it and it is a glorious thing for Nigeria but let me be clear, anything you cannot dictate for your hand to do, you cannot control.”

Unknown to many, his career as an entertainer started as with a travelling theatre troupe lead by Chief Moses Adejumo Olaiya, popularly known as Baba Sala. On Baba Sala insistence, he dropped the life of a minstrel and took up that of a singer.

He extols the sage in so many words; “Baba Sala is my boss and he will continue to be my boss for life. I owe him that gratitude for life. I was playing percussion in his band and he was playing guitar and a couple of instruments. I was in charge of the music in the drama section, playing conga. He actually prompted me to go into music with a proviso that I should go and if after nine months, I found it tough, I should come back. He told me, go and try and that if does not work, come back.”

However, entering the grand age of the septuagenarians, one would like to know whether he has reached the height of his achievements of whether he still has other plans.

“Let me say it clearly to you, I am not God. I can only say what I think I can do but he alone can say what I will do,” said KSA.

Being showcased alongside globally recognised artistes like The Beatle’s is no easy feat and the artiste says that it is like a crowning point of his career. This is evident in his guitar being put on display at the Music Instrument Museum, Phoenix, Arizona.

“My guitar and costume were donated to the Musical Instruments Museum in Arizona about four years ago. I have never seen a museum as big as that with pictures of myself that I have never seen before. The Nigerian Corner is a beehive of visitors. I had the privilege of playing before a huge audience comprising musicologists and musicians. I had the audience to sing along with me.”

Only recently KSA scored a victory in the N500million copyright suit filed against African Songs and its subsidiary, Take Your Choice Records (TYC). And for him, it was a victory well deserved.

“The case was won by me and they were told to pay me N500million but they are yet to do that. The next thing I saw was an appeal to we are still waiting to know what will happen next. I also hope I get back my master tapes.”

As one who belongs to another generation, KSA refuses to join the bandwagon to condemn today’s music because, as he puts it, Nigerian music is Nigerian music.

“There are good musicians in this country today. Because you are part of them, you are part of the entertainment industry. I used to say to those I mentor, we have made some mistakes. Please check what we have done wrong, remove it. Replace it with good ones. Return it to us, then we will have better music. Our ancestors too made some mistakes which we corrected,” he said.

On the quality of music being churned out today, he says; “Before you can say one particular music has quality, it depends on what you use to play it. I would say music is always there. It is for the producer to find that particular sound that would please the listeners. As for equipments; in Nigeria today, you can count how many studios we have. You can also count how many equipments they have. I’ve talked about the compositions. Those things influence them.”

However, he says, he has no particular preference when it comes to present day artistes as they all come with their unique sounds.

“I love all of them because they have different styles. You cannot compare them to each other. You can only group them under hip-hop. Even in juju music, we have different styles. As long as they are doing something unique, I’m ok with it,” he says.

With his gait and presence of mind for a man his age, one would agree that the King is not too old to take a new wife but he says that is not in his agenda, for now. In his words, it would be out place to make such move at his age.

“Are you praying for me or cursing me. If you see some of my grandchildren, you will think they are my wives. Taking a new wife now, I don’t know. It is not on my agenda at the moment. By the grace of God, during my 70th birthday concert, the world will see my children and grandchildren singing and dancing to my songs on stage.”

Year after year, KSA’s birthday has been celebrated in grand style but this year’s celebration is unique in that, not only does he clock the golden age of 70, the celebration has been extended to run throughout the month. The activities which started on September 1 with a special prayer by the General Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God, EA Adeboye. Other activities slated include a gospel music night, special prayers, family celebration, a book launch and a host of others. The events will culminate in a grand finale where musicians from all over the world will gather to do him homage.

Born September 22, 1946 KSA is a Nigerian musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and a pioneer of modern world music who has been classed as one of the most influential musicians of all time.

  • TONY OKOROJI FLOORS ONYEKA ONWENU IN DEFAMATION SUIT

FOR defaming the image of the chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Tony Okoroji, veteran songstress, Onyeka Onwenu has been ordered to pay the sum of Five Million Naira and tender a public apology. This was decided by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja this Thursday, June 30.

In a judgment in Suit No: ID/935/12 filed in 2012, Hon Justice I. O. Akinkugbe (Mrs.) ordered Onwenu to tender an unreserved public apology to Chief Okoroji to be published in Vanguard Newspapers and its website.

Reacting to the judgment, Okoroji who was in court said the ruling goesto show that justice can be obtained in Nigeria.

“I have committed much of my life to fighting for the welfare of every musician in Nigeria and protecting the interest of all including Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. In the battle, I have spared myself no inconvenience or discomfort and countless times, I have had to risk my life, my reputation and the welfare of my family. Working with my colleagues at COSON, we have made available to musicians across Nigeria hundreds of millions of Naira as we set out with the building of the most professional, transparent and accountable organization in the history of the creative industries in Nigeria, something that was considered impossible just a few years ago.

Reacting to the judgment, ace broadcaster and well known friend of Chief Tony Okoroji, Mr. Patrick Doyle said; “some will recall that I publicly cautioned Onyeka Onwenu when she began her ill-advised war of attrition against Chief Tony Okoroji. I told her that she was taking on the wrong guy. She refused to listen. Now, the chickens have come home to roost and she has to pay for her attempt to destroy a good man.”

  • Alleged N17m bribe: ICPC invites Onyeka Onwenu, Internal Auditor

Alleged N17m bribe: ICPC invites Onyeka Onwenu, Internal Auditor

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Ms Onyeka Onwenu, and an internal auditor for interrogation on the alleged N17million bribe-for-contract at the centre.

Prior to the appearance of the songstress today, three key officials of the NCWD were yesterday grilled by the anti-graft agency.

They are Mukhtar Usman, Jauro Jibrin and Sadeeq Umar.

But a Deputy Director in NWCD, who doubles as Personal Assistant to Onwenu, Chika Abazu, has been remanded in prison following the alleged N17million bribery.

A source in ICPC said: “Our investigation into the bribery scam has reached an appreciable level of interaction with Ms Onyeka Onwenu.

“Actually, this invitation predated this new administration. But each time we summoned her during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, she used to tell ICPC that she was either running one errand for the former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, or on her entourage.

“Now that we have arraigned her PA in court, we need to complete the other leg of our investigation because findings have shown that some officials of NCWD were also implicated in the bribery scandal.

“Fairness demands that we should hear from these officials whether or not they were involved as alleged.”

Abazu, who was charged to court on July 10, 2015 before Justice Chukwu Ndukwe of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, is facing a six-count charge of bribery and gratification.

Although he pleaded not guilty, he was denied bail and remanded in Kuje Prison.

A contractor, Joseph Nwakama, who is also an architect with Solidmark Associates Limited,  petitioned ICPC  that he paid N17million bribe to NCWD top officials  through Abazu.

The petitioner said: “I was called by Abazu, a deputy director at the NCWD and PA to Onwenu, early in April 2014 and asked to submit a bid for the renovation of rooms at the centre’s guest house.

“After two days he called me and told me that the centre would like me to do the job because my bill was the lowest, and that I should come and see the DG.

“When I came, the DG asked me to start work, that I should work day and night (and) that they would give me an award letter, agreement and advance,” the contractor stated.

The contract was awarded on April 28, 2014 at N33 million for 25 rooms.

“He told me that the DG wanted me to give them N23million out of the money for the 55 rooms. I told him that it was too much (but) he told me that if I was not going to give them, the DG would ask me to pay back the money (N22, 619, 047.62) and the other contractor would do the job.”

He said he later gave N17million to Abazu.

  • Onyeka Onwenu, others join women empowerment campaign

Onyeka Onwenu, others join women empowerment campaign

Veteran musician, Onyeka Onwenu, Nollywood thespians, OmotolaJaladeEkeinde, and GenevieveNnaji, are among the celebrities who have joined the ONE Campaign and Nigerian civil society organizations in a call for world leaders to take urgent action for women empowerment. This is coming ahead of the establishment of the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals

As part of the African Union Year of Women Empowerment, the ONE Campaign on Thursday April 16, in Abuja launched Poverty is Sexist, a campaign and online petition calling on world leaders to make the affairs of girls and women centre stage in 2015, a year when new development goals will be set.

High profile Nigerians, including Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development, Lady OnyekaOnwenu, actresses OmotolaJalade-Ekeinde, and Genevieve Nnaji, musicians Omawumi and D’banj, have added their names to ONE’s call for action.

The campaign was launched at a policy forum that was attended by representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), Equity Advocates and Save the Children Nigeria among others.

A recently released report by ONE titled, Poverty is Sexist: Why Girls and Women Must Be at the Heart of The Fight to End Extreme Poverty shows how unlocking women’s economic potential could improve the lives of everyone in society.

During the event, Lady OnyekaOnwenu joined ArumaOteh to sign an online petition, which is online at www.one.org/sexist. Onwenu recognized that progress is being made in women empowerment, but there is a lot left to be done. She said:

Other Issues raised at the policy forum include the need for a comprehensive national policy on political inclusion for women, the need for monitoring mechanisms for funds targeting women development, and increased collaboration and synergy among women’s empowerment groups and champions.

A policy document will be compiled from the forum, which will contribute to a continental narrative being developed by the ONE campaign to lobby leaders for action, in the lead up to the AU Heads of State Summit in June and the UN Summit in September.

The report shows that poverty and gender inequality go hand in hand, whether you look at health, education or work. Not only are girls and women worse off than those in wealthier countries, but the gender gap in these areas between males and females is greatest in the poorest countries. This double disadvantage means that: a woman in Sierra Leone is 183 times more likely to die in childbirth than a woman in Switzerland, working women in the least developed countries are three times more likely to be in vulnerable employment than women elsewhere and in the poorest countries, literacy levels are a third lower for women than men.

New Sustainable Development Goals, due to be unveiled at the United Nations in September, will set out a plan to end extreme poverty by 2030. But that ambition will only be realised if efforts are directed where the need is greatest, in both the poorest countries and to boost the prospects of girls and women, who are disproportionately affected.

  • Onyeka Onwenu opposes women wing movements

Onyeka Onwenu opposes women wing movements

The Director-General of the National Council for Women Development (NCWD) and a veteran musician, Onyeka Onwenu, has opposed women wing movements in politics, saying they should be abolished.

She said such movements did not give women their dues in politics or help in the fight against gender inequality, because women were only organised to clap and dance.

Onwenu lamented that the country had not done well for women in terms of elective offices.

She compared Nigeria to Kenya, which allocated 35 per cent of elective offices to women in its constitution, saying the former had capable women.

The NCWD DG spoke yesterday in Kaduna at a three-day capacity building programme on “Gender mainstreaming training for the media”, organised by the NCWD with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
