Current governors are extravagant – Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzo Kalu, on Friday said the inability of current governors in the country to pay workers’ salaries as at when due was because they squander their states’ funds on personal luxury.

He spoke with State House correspondents after leading a delegation of investors in the power sector to a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinabjo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said some of the governors are in the habit of taking up to N35 million as traveling allowance on one trip.

Kalu said unless governors stop withdrawal of funds as security vote, they will continue to face difficulties funding critical projects in their states.

He, however, noted that some governors are doing well by developing their states.

On the recent demand for more funds by the governors to meet up with their statutory obligations, Kalu said the demand was unnecessary as states already have sufficient funds to function optimally.

He said: “I think most of these governors are doing very well and some of them also are living in the euphoria of the office. You can see most of them who are very active, I don’t need to count them for you.

“But honestly, in my opinion, I think these governors have enough fund to work for their people because if you check, the money drawn as security vote is excessive. They should stop that.

“Unless they stop drawing on security vote they will not have enough fund to work with and most of them are living in absolute luxury.”

    Ex-Governor Kalu’s corruption trial reopens April 11

•Supreme Court delivers judgment on March 18

The Federal Government may reopen the trial of former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu on April 11.

This followed a letter by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to the Federal High Court, Abuja, for a fresh hearing in the case stalled since 2007 by appeals filed by Kalu.

Following the letter, the court scheduled the case for mention yesterday.

The ex-governor is challenging the money laundering charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Kalu was arraigned on July 27, 2007, at the Federal High Court, Abuja on a 107-count of money laundering, official corruption and criminal diversion of public funds in excess of N5 billion.

He approached the Court of Appeal to set aside the ruling of the Federal High Court that he had a case to answer.

The appellate court dismissed the appeal for lack of merit and gave the anti-graft agency the nod to prosecute him, a decision he appealed at the Supreme Court.

Yesterday, the prosecution was represented by Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) and the defence was not.

But Jacobs told the court that parties were awaiting the judgment of the Supreme Court in Kalu’s appeal.

“By March 18, the Supreme Court will give its judgment in the appeal by the defendant. We have been waiting since 2007, we can still wait for one month,” Jacobs said.

He requested a date after March 18 for parties to report the apex court judgment.

Justice Anwuli Chikere agreed with Jacobs on the need to await the decision of the Supreme Court and adjourned to April 11.

  • Kalu withdraws from senatorial race

    Kalu withdraws from senatorial race

    Cites imposition of candidates

Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has withdrawn from the 2015 senatorial race.

Kalu was seeking the ticket for the Abia North senatorial district on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated November 24, 2014 and addressed to the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, the former governor said he was withdrawing from the race because the Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, was bent on imposing his handpicked aspirants on the party in the state.

He lamented that the governor deceived some high profile members of the party into resigning their plum positions to contest elections, only for him to ditch them for his handpicked candidates.

Kalu said: “Along the line, however, it became apparent that the Abia State Governor, Chief T.A Orji wants to handpick all candidates, both into executive and legislative positions. He wants to choose his own successor, fill the 24 House of Assembly seats, the eight federal constituencies and the three senatorial seats.

“Governor Orji knew ahead of time that he had a candidate in mind but deliberately allowed eminent Abia citizens like Dr. Alex Otti, GMD of Diamond Bank to resign from his lofty position when he should have advised him to remain there.

“He also allowed the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu to resign and lose the Abia slot in the Federal Executive Council and other ministerial committees, he equally allowed two ranking members of the Senate, Senators Nkechi Nwogu and Enyinnaya Abaribe to pick gubernatorial forms when he should have advised them to go for re-election into the Senate.

“I find all these very disturbing. When Governor Orji was to be elected the first time in 2007, everyone knew where I stood three years before then that he was my anointed candidate. There was absolutely no ambiguity unlike now that he has allowed these people to lose their positions and resources chasing shadows. It is quite obvious that Governor Orji’s plan is to bring everybody down.”

While maintaining that there was no ward congress in Abia state, Kalu said the governor and his “collaborators” just compiled the list of delegates and this has forced some members of the PDP to defect to other parties.

He warned that it is dangerous for PDP to hang all its hope on one man, as elections are won by collective efforts and not as a solo run.

  • ‘You cannot compare light with darkness in Abia’

Abia State Attorney – General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Umeh Kalu, is a leading member of the Abia Patriots who are campaigning to protect the achievements of Governor T.A. Orji against attacks by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu while bringing to the attention of the Federal Government the decadent state of federal roads in Abia. Agamnetochi Onoh reports

Do you agree with Orji Uzor Kalu that Governor Theodore Orji is misrepresenting facts regarding his (Kalu’s) tenure as Abia state governor?

The evidence relating to Kalu’s dismal performance as Governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007 is legion. He has raised issues about the buoyant financial state of affairs that he left behind in 2007. The facts available reveal that his Government left a debt of over N29 billion which was cleared by this Government. He laid false claims to building multiple roads in Abia especially in Aba. The fact is that by 2008 no one could access Aba through the Aba-Owerri Road and most of its major roads were in a state of disrepair because the drainages on the few roads that were constructed by him had been blocked by the numerous shops built on these drainages which problems still prevail till today.

So much has equally been said on the liberation of Abia State which slogan Kalu and his cronies appear not to be in terms with. The truth remains that Abia under Orji Uzor Kalu was in bondage. The state was under his stranglehold and his cabal consisting of members of his immediate family. Responsible and eminent Abians were excluded from the affairs of the state and in most cases physically prevented from entering Abia. Some of them abandoned the state to Kalu and his helmsmen. The story has long changed as there is peace and tranquility within the state and respect for elders and all other accomplished Abians.

Did the former governor design a roadmap for Abia State and what are the basic contents of the map?

Only Orji Uzor Kalu can explain or show the world the roadmap he designed for Abia State. As someone who joined Government in 2009, I found absolutely nothing to show for the eight years he was in Government. The basic structures of a modern state were all lacking. In my ministry, which is the Ministry of Justice, I met about four poultry-like bungalows making up the Ministry. There were no furnitures and the entire premises were in a derelict state. This was the case in all other ministries including the Government House. All the industries, like the Golden Guinea Breweries and Ceramics had been sold in questionable circumstances. The state was indebted both to foreign and local contractors and the few roads he claimed he built in Aba were impassable. With all these and more, it is difficult to talk about a roadmap. In my mind those eight years, 1999 – 2007, can be regarded as the years of the locust which experience, I must tell you, Abians will have to pay for a long time to come.

Talking about roadmap, I can conveniently tell you that the foundation for a new Abia has just commenced. This can be seen in the provision of the basic structures which the present Government in Abia State is struggling to provide.

What are those specific structures the ex-governor lays claim to?

None, because the facts are there for everyone to see. Government is a continuum. It is unfortunate that Orji Uzor Kalu spent all his years in Government globetrotting and moving all over the country in his bid to project himself as a statesman and expanding his business empire while leaving behind the serious task of governance. This is the price we are paying today in Abia State. All his claims of being an action Governor were all make belief as there is absolutely nothing to show for his it. If Kalu had found it worthwhile to provide drainage and build good roads in Aba, we would not be talking of bad roads in Aba by now. If his Government had found it worthwhile to make Umuahia the State Capital in the real sense, this Government would not be spending money to change the face of the city in order to make it a befitting State capital. There is no comparison between the former Governor and the present in terms of performance.

Abia Patriots advertorial claimed Kalu has been blocked from joining the PDP by Abia stakeholders while he points at the governor. Can you explain the intricacies of this matter?

Few days ago, the vice-chairman of PDP, South East, Col. Austin Akobundu (Rtd) and the Abia State Chairman (PDP) Senator Emma Nwaka all came out publicly to refute Orji Uzor Kalu’s claim to PDP membership. This was in response to Orji Uzor Kalu’s visit to the PDP headquarters in company of Ikedi Ohakim to see the Chairman of the PDP. For me, I know you don’t join a political party from the national level but from your ward and upwards. It is unfortunate that Chief T. A. Orji is suffering misplaced aggression and persecution from Kalu. Chief T. A. Orji cannot be his problem in his bid at rejoining the PDP.

The issue of his rejection has always been there even before Chief T. A. Orji joined the PDP. I recall that in 2010, Kalu made an effort, just like he is presently doing, to rejoin the PDP but was stoutly and unanimously resisted by all major stakeholders in an all night meeting at the Hilton, Abuja. Those stakeholders who resisted him in 2010 while Chief T. A. Orji was in APGA preparatory to join the PDP are still united in their resolve not to let him into the party.

Equally during the tenure of Bamanga Tukur as Chairman, he made another effort and was resisted again. If I were to advise him his option would have been to resurrect his PPA and engage it as a vehicle towards the realisation of his senatorial bid as he did in 2011.

Any way the former governor’s posters and billboards suggest he is back to PDP to contest the Senatorial election for Abia North; what’s your comment?

Abia PDP members, of whom I am one, know their members. I can further tell you that I have not seen Orji Uzor Kalu in any of our PDP meetings, either at the state level, Abia North Senatorial level or National level. Billboards and posters do not constitute membership and even membership cards as they can be gotten anywhere.

What is the Federal Government doing to complement Governor Orji’s efforts in revamping infrastructure in Aba?

The problem with the roads in Abia State is concentrated within Aba-axis. Government has identified this problem and it is being addressed. The major one is that of poor drainage, followed by non-adherence to town planning regulations by house owners who build on drainage lines. So much has gone into desilting of the drainages while buildings built on drainage lines must go in order to make way for easy passage of flood. But let me equally say here that most of the major roads that beg for attention in Abia State and especially in Aba are federal roads which the Federal Government should give attention to. Abia State Government would have even undertaken to do these roads, and have in fact in the past carried out some interventions on these roads, if we had the financial capacity like our neighbouring states of Akwa-Ibom and Rivers. The state of disrepair of these federal roads is the focus of the call by Abia Patriots and Abia legislators at the National Assembly, on the Federal Government to take up their responsibilities by repairing these roads.

The former governor dwelt heavily on his role in installing Governor Orji as his successor. What do you have to say in this regard?

Kalu is bitter, full of regrets and in dire need to tell the world that he is a better man than Chief T. A. Orji, both in character and in performance in the art of governance. Kalu was not alone in the political calculation that brought the Ochendo to power just like other Governors who had endeavoured to enthrone a successor of their choice. The question is what is the basis of his regret? His sadness arises from the abrupt end Chief T. A. Orji brought to his meddlesomeness in the affairs of Abia State and the fate of its citizens and the decision to tow a different political part from his.

It is common knowledge in Abia State that after Orji Uzor Kalu’s tenure ended in 2007, he boasted he would continue to rule Abia State for the next twenty-five years. The commencement of his proxy reign was through Chief T. A. Orji, whom he believed would do all his biddings on who gets what in the state including T. A. Orji’s successor. That was Orji Uzor Kalu’s proposal as a human being but he never knew God had His own plans, as man proposes but God disposes.

For Kalu to think he would be in control of a state like Abia with its enormous and eminent personalities for twenty-five years is unthinkable and a futile exercise at playing God.

Can you comment on other issues arising from the advertorial and Kalu’s presentation of his stewardship between 1999 and 2007?

Kalu’s comparison of his stewardship with that of Chief T. A. Orji is not only an affront to the people of Abia State but insulting to our sensibilities; it is like comparing light with darkness. Kalu’s stewardship belongs to the past and remains in history books and in the memory of discerning Abians.

His continued thinking that he remains the issue in Abia politics or even the politics of the Igbo will remain an illusion for his time is past.

Orji challenges Kalu to debate, essay competition

THE governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, has challenged the former governor of the state, Orji Uzor Kalu, to a full blown debate after which they will go for essay writing to tell the people of the state and the country what they have done for their people while in office.

The challenge was thrown to the former governor by the Special Adviser to Governor Orji on politics, Chief Amah Abraham Nnanna, in Umuahia in a chat with The Nation. The governor’s aide said the media war declared against the governor by the former governor needs to be addressed once and for all.

Nnanna, who served Kalu some years ago in the same capacity, said there is no basis for comparison between the two, stressing that the things the present governor has done are there for all to see while the former governor has nothing to show for the eight years he was in charge.

He explained that after the oral television debate, the two political leaders would also go for an essay where they will put down their achievements for posterity, adding that written documents would serve as a reference point for the future generation.

The political adviser said from the last administration to the present, there are many differences like politicians in the state are now one united family unlike before when there were Abuja-based politicians and home based ones.

“Before now, there was acrimony within the politics of the state so much so that if you talk to an Abia politician based in Abuja who we used to call Talibans, you stand the chance of losing your appointment, but now it is no longer so.”

On those who want to take over from the incumbent governor, Amah said all the governorship aspirants in the state have been busy sharing money, without letting the electorate know what they will do as governor.

He maintained that the aspirants have not learnt anything from the present governor. “All they do is to tell their people they are the best person to be the next governor, after which they will drop N5 million for the people, we have gone above this type of politics.”

  • Kalu not back in PDP, says party

Kalu not back in PDP, says party

THE South East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it has not re-admitted former Abia State governor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu into the party. The National Vice Chairman, South East zone of the PDP, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), said the rumours making the rounds that the former governor has returned to PDP were false. He described the rumour as the figment of the imagination of the peddlers.

In a statement issued in Enugu and made available to reporters, Akobundu said reports reaching him from both the Bende LGA and Abia State chapters of the party indicated that the former governor is not a member of the party.

“He is neither registered in his Igbere ward nor recognized as having done so in Bende LGA, let alone being accepted at the state level of the party as a returnee,” he explained. Akobundu stressed that the zonal level of the party recognized and accepted entrants or returnees who have been duly registered and certified as having fulfilled all the requirements of entry or reentry into the party as laid down in the party constitution.

He wondered how some group, particularly politicians from the opposing camp should insinuate that Kalu is now a member of the PDP when in actual fact he is not. “For the avoidance of doubt, Orji Uzor Kalu is not a member of PDP.

For the fact that he visited some friends at the national secretariat of PDP in Abuja and later took photograph with some unsuspecting national officers and former political office holders, as published in two national dailies, does not make him a member of Peoples Democratic Party. The Party has a constitution, guidelines and laid down rules by which it conducts its affairs, including how returnees should be reunited.

“Kalu, we should recall, was a governor at a time when our dear National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Ma’azu was holding sway in Bauchi State. That Kalu had gone to our national headquarters to felicitate with his erstwhile colleague, probably in company of others does not automatically qualify him as a member of the PDP.’’

Boko Haram is politically instigated – Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said the Boko Haram insurgency was politically instigated by certain enemies of democracy in the country.

Kalu, who spoke on Tuesday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party said with “able men like me in the party” there is no way President Goodluck Jonathan could lose the 2015 presidential election.

He continued: “How can the PDP lose the presidency when it has people like us? I do not see the PDP losing its seat.

“Democracy is not about one person or President Jonathan. We have to bring our efforts together so as to move democracy forward.

“President Jonathan is doing everything possible to bring the Chibok girls back. We must thank our military men for the job they are doing.

“Insurgency is a new thing to us. Insurgency is politically motivated and it is the people who think Jonathan should not contest the 2015 that are behind it. They should allow him to finish his tenure.”

On his relationship with the present governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, Kalu denied any squabble with Orji, saying the governor is a great asset to the country.

Kalu, whose attempts to rejoin the PDP are being resisted by Governor Orji and some power brokers in Abia State, however insisted that he rejoined the party about two years ago.

The former governor has indicated interest in running for Senate in 2015 amid stiff opposition from the governor and some vested interests in the state.

  • Nigeria is still backward, says Kalu

Nigeria is still backward, says Kalu

The former governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu has said Nigeria is still living in the past.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the inaugural conference organized by the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN),  Orji noted that what others use to advance their countries has become a curse to Nigeria.

He however urged communication scholars and professionals to chart a way forward.
The former governor who was represented by the Managing Director  of Telegraph Newspaper, Eric Osagie said: “the rest of the world has gone ahead in science, in technology, in conquering new vistas and realms, but Nigeria, sadly is still marooned in an inglorious past. ”
“Multiculturalism, which the rest of the world has turned to strength, is a curse to Nigeria. Diversity has become a bitter pill, which the country is constantly forced to swallow  when the rest of the world has used the same as a launch pad into greater realms.”
The former governor added: “Today, almost everything has become centrifugal force in Nigeria. Language divided us, religion tears us apart, culture renders us asunder. Yet, these could be sources of strength and cohesion.”

” They could the centripetal influences that could help us forge a true nation-state, a land where no man is oppressed, where there are no fears of ethnic domination or suppression, and where peace and justice truly reign.
Kalu urged stakeholders in communication to prescribe antidote to what is tearing the nation apart.
“Please use the couple of days ahead to brainstorm on the problems facing our country, and how communication can be used to solve them. You are the scholars and professionals. Please prescribe antidotes to hate, malice, fear and suspicion dogging the footsteps of our country, using the instrumentality of communication.
“Please chart the course for us, shine the light, and let the people find the way. Lead us out of the morass in which we are as a country, and plant our feet on the rock to stay,” Kalu said.

  • Kalu grieves

    Kalu grieves

A former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu has expressed shock over the demise of former Supreme Court judge, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, last Sunday.

The former governor reflected on the eminent jurist’s life and man’s limited time on earth and how each person will one day be lowered underside the earth forever.

Kalu described the death of Justice Oputa as one of “death’s errors and betrayals”.

He added: “The news of the death of Pa Oputa came to me overseas, when I was in one of my joyful moods. I was immediately thrown aback, shouting: ‘This is one of death’s errors and betrayals’.”

The former governor said he was consoled by the fact that the late jurist established a great relationship with the living, adding that death could not close this.

According to him, it is not easy for Nigerians and the world to forget the late Justice Oputa, especially because he established a strong relationship with all who came across him.

“So, it is not easy to fill the gap that the death of Justice Oputa has created,” Kalu said.

The frontline entrepreneur stressed that the late Justice Oputa was not like cowards, who die many times before their real death.

According to him, Justice Oputa’s lifetime makes the living to remember that uprightness and commitment to living makes living worthwhile.

Kalu urged all and sundry to live a life worth of emulation, not a life of climbing on the backs of others and weighing them down into emptiness.
