  • Oshiomhole tasks Obaseki on ideals of Edo University

The immediate past governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has tasked the state government and management of the Edo University, Iyamho, to be focused on the ideals behind the establishment of the institution.

The ex-governor said the institution was established to provide first class university education with skill acquisition, train future leaders and provide environment for quality learning, teaching and research.

Oshiomhole, who spoke at the first Founder’s Day lecture of the university, reminded the institution management that the school was not built for only children of the rich.

The Founder’s Day lecturers were delivered by Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State, Prof. Friday Okonofua and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barr. Austine Alegeh.

Oshiomhole stated that part of the institution policy was to pay tuition fees of gifted indigent students from grants made available to the university by the state government.

He urged the university management to strive towards maintaining facilities put in place for future generation to use.

He said, “We have a clear vision to build a world class university. I said we will not start with a temporary site. That was why we put standard structures in place. Management must continue to maintain these facilities.

“I told the VC then that if you must charge economic fees, they must allocate a percentage to indigent students who are brilliant and whose parents cannot afford to pay the fees. We must have brilliant students here to be covered by grants given to the university.

“Edo University must cover those gifted children. I will not accept for the state to subsidize education for the rich. To avoid disruption in academic calendar, I then directed that lecturers in this university be better paid.

“I hoped that some of these policies are sustained so that poor parents can send their children to this university.”

In his lecture titled, “Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria: The Role of the Judiciary,” Barr. Alegeh said the laws granted to the courts encouraged abuse of discretionary powers.

He called for the establishment of Bail Act, Sentencing Act and enactment of laws providing for maximum period an accused person may be remanded in prison custody.

  • Obaseki, Oshiomhole pay tributes

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday paid tributes to a former Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia who died on Thursday.

They spoke during a condolence visit to family of late Ogbemudia at his Benin City residence.

Obaseki, who was represented by his deputy, Philip Shaibu, said Ogbemudia would be fondly remembered for building the bridge of development in the defunct Bendel State.

“He built bridges across the country. If you go to Delta State or come to Edo State, all his footprints are all over there. Is it in the educational sector? You will remember UNIBEN.

“That is why this administration has said that that foundation he laid, we will continue from it because building on that foundation he laid through vocational studies, our children will come back to life to be self-employed,” the governor said.

Oshiomhole, who spoke to newsmen after signing the condolence register, said he received news of Ogbemudia’s death with shock.

He said the pain of the loss would be shared by his biological and political family.

Oshiomhole was accompanied by his ex-deputy‎, Dr. Pius Odubu and former Chief of Staff, Patrick Obahiagbon.

He stated that he drawn from the huge fountain of knowledge of late Ogbemudia in various aspects of governance, noting that the beneficiaries of his (late Ogbemudia) service to humanity would forever be grateful to him.

The ex-governor said: “Immortalising him is by naming projects as I tried to do as a token acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution in laying foundation for our state.

“But across the length and breadth of Edo State and Delta State, you find roads in otherwise unknown rural areas that was done by Ogbemudia’ government.‎

“Those children who drive on those roads, those elders and even the yet unborn will hear and read about these stories.”

  • Oshiomhole, Soludo clash over N8bn forex cash

Oshiomhole, Soludo clash over N8bn forex cash

It was a clash of the titans yesterday as the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, exchanged words over alleged N8 billion proceeds from foreign exchange transactions.

The duo were  guest speakers at the Vanguard Economic Discourse held in Lagos.

Oshiomhole fired the first salvo when he accused Soludo of colluding with two unnamed banks to make N8 billion from the forex market in two days during his tenure as CBN boss.

He claimed  that Soludo violated the forex rules by ensuring that two banks got huge forex allocations ahead of major naira devaluations.

But Soludo would have none of that.

He dismissed the allegation as a lie, insisting that  there was no such allocations to the banks as the lenders followed competitive bidding process.

He said that the CBN under his tenure built massive foreign reserves, and had allowed the exchange rate to adjust to market forces demands.

He said that Oshiomhole did not know the difference between devaluation and depreciation of the naira. He said  all the banks got equal chances during the bidding process.

Earlier in his keynote address, Soludo had said the country has many challenges, calling for all hands to be on the deck to resolve them.

“Nigeria economy is in a dire need of a rescue. The national budget is not working. We are still where we were since independence. Nigerians have been trusted to rescue the country. The continuous slide in oil prices and Niger Delta crisis are only a simple explanation of the ongoing economic problems. Nigeria seems to be moving in cycles since independence. Finally, the Federal Government has an economic recovery plan which is supposed to be government’s blueprint for rescuing the economy,” he said.

“I want to commend the effort, to be fair, the government inherited very bad economy. The previous government had unprecedented rate of debt accumulation even at a time of unexpected oil boom. The previous government was even depleting our foreign reserves instead of doubling what it met. It could have more than doubled the reserves, if it grew it by just 50 per cent,” he added.

Continuing, he said that when  President Muhammadu Buhari came to power, inflation was at nine per cent and has risen to about 19 per cent; exchange rate dropped from N197/ N205 to dollar  to N305/465 to dollar in the parallel market; unemployment rose from 7.5  per cent to 14 per cent while capital market capitalisation, business confidence and ease of doing business have also worsened.

Soludo said that foreign reserves have been depleted, current account balance negative, wages are declining, half-hearted commitment to deregulation of the petroleum industry.

“The domestic currency style, the economy is in recession, but in dollar terms, the economy has suffered a massive compression. The Gross Domestic Product has shrunk from $575 billion when the government came to power to $357 billion/$232 billion for parallel market rates. The value of the GDP has dropped by more than half. It will be a miracle for the government to return the GDP value to the level it met it,” he said.

Soludo, however, commended the government for plugging the loopholes in the economy. He said that government is inconsistent with plan for economic growth. The governments keep blaming themselves, and are busy chasing rats and losing the cows.

“Nigeria has refused to learn from the history from the booms and bursts cycles. Every government since 1970 has pursued diversification, but failed to pull it through,” he said.

Also speaking, Solid Minerals Development Minister  Kayode Fayemi, said the ugly trend in the economy started long ago, and that the present government cannot perform magic in fixing the economy.

“We are not going to perform magic in addressing the challenges facing the economy. But the people may not want to hear this. Our tax base is one of the lowest in Africa,” he said.

Oshiomhole alleged that Soludo priced money out of the reach of investors and had no reason to castigate government over present economic crisis.

“We need to raise the purchasing power of the average Nigerian. The problem with the public sector is not wages but fraud,” Oshiomhole said.

Former Managing Director, Diamond Bank Plc, Alex Otti, said it was wrong to bar 41 items from accessing forex from the official market because the importers will still find ways to fund the products.

Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismark Rewane, called for reform of the forex market to save the economy from collapse. He also called for the government to fix the lectoral process for the economy to recover.

But Soludo refuted the allegations, saying that Oshiomhole lied against him.

He said there were no such allocations to the banks as the lenders followed competitive bidding process.

He said the CBN under his tenure built massive foreign reserves and had allowed the exchange rate to adjust to market forces’ demands.

He said the ex- Edo governor does not know the difference between devaluation and depreciation of the naira.

  • Agbomhere rejects Oshiomhole as Edo APC caucus chairman

Agbomhere rejects Oshiomhole as Edo APC caucus chairman

A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Blessing Agbomhere, has rejected the emergence of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the Chairman of the Edo  State APC Caucus.

Agbomhere said Oshiomhole lacked the moral and political credentials to be the sole leader of the APC in the state.

The former governor emerged as the caucus leader at a meeting where Governor Godwin Obaseki gave report of his 100 days performance in office.

In a statement, Agbomhere said the Edo APC was not bereaved of true and patriotic leaders.

He said: “It is double standard for any APC member to call Oshiomhole the leader of Edo APC when the same man fought Chief Tony Anenih because he was called the leader when Lucky Igbinedion was Governor of Edo State.

“We have Prince Tony Momoh, a former Minister and former Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and Chief John Oyegun. No sane man will leave these learned, erudite and accomplished leaders and fathers with their intellectual, mental and moral sagacity to choose Adams as Edo State APC leader.

“If there must be any state leader of the APC, it has to be the governor, and Adams is no longer the governor and he is not the leader. Godwin Obaseki is the governor and the leader of the Edo APC.

“Adams Oshiomhole is a former governor and a member of the party, and he must be accorded the respect and rights deserving of such positions. Anything short or higher than that is against the APC constitution and it must be regarded as a political and social taboo.”

  • I am proud of Obaseki’s achievement – Oshiomhole

The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has said he is proud of what Governor Godwin Obaseki has achieved in his first 100 days in office.

Oshiomhole said Obaseki has been carrying out what he promised the people during the electioneering campaigns.

The ex-governor spoke at the enlarged meeting of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Caucus on Tuesday.

He noted that the most important thing was that Obaseki has kept his eyes on the ball and what he (Obaseki) needed is the support of all stakeholders in the APC.

Oshiomhole urged the party leaders to key into available opportunities emerging from openings created by the governor to empower them.

He praised the party leaders for giving Governor Obaseki the quiet moment needed to think through all available options.

The ex-governor said, “There is renewed emphasis on technical education. I know this was mentioned in every location we visited and action is already being taken. Tayo Akpata University is a reality beyond legislation. The governor has been a militant traveling round to bring in real investors to come and see things themselves and they are responding.

“In the long run, the best way to empower leaders is to create opportunity for you to key in into any of the available opportunity that are emerging from the opening. This is a basket that has various kernels for everyone. There is something for everyone. I am proud that under 100 days the governor has done a lot than what has been said.”

  • Why I don’t interfere in Obaseki’s administration- Oshiomhole

Why I don’t interfere in Obaseki’s administration- Oshiomhole

Former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday gave an insight into how he has been coping with life since he left office in November last year. He explained that he stayed away from Benin since he left office because he wants to allow the new governor a free hand, adding that when he hears about what is happening in Edo State today, he feels fulfilled.

He spoke to journalist after he voted at his polling unit in the Estako Federal Constituency by-election.

Unlike in the past when he was escorted by retinue of security aides, Oshiomhole drove himself in a black Lexus Jeep to the Iyamho Primary School where his polling unit is located.

He wore a blue polo and black trousers and stayed on the queue until it got to his turn to be accredited.

He said he now enjoys his stay in the village as it affords him the opportunity to renew his personal relationship with his community people.

His words, “All I need now is to give my best to Nigeria and identify with the very ordinary people. To be honest, if I can be a governor here, any human being can be.

“You will hear my life story after I finish what I am writing. I have to stay away from Benin. It is important that the new governor has a free hand and feel a sense of freedom to try a new idea. When you stay too long in a particular position, you don’t have new ideas; you are no longer hungry to prove anything. There is nothing to prove. Everything is like recycling.

“But when a new person comes in, even if he comes from the same womb, he has his own hunger to make his own statement in his own style. In this world, there are varieties of functional doable styles, but each person is endowed with only one and when I hear from people what is going on in Edo State, the renewed focus on investment, the renewed interest of investors, various sectors to create the job we need for our young people, I feel fulfilled.”

On the rumour talks about President Muhammadu Buhari’s health, Oshiomhole described it as unnecessary as medical doctors do go outside the country for medical check-up.

  • Ex-NYSC DG begs Obaseki to reverse monarch’s deposition

A former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Dr. John Abhuere, has appealed to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to reverse the deposition of the Onojie of Uromi, HRH Anslem Eidenogie 11.

The monarch was deposed by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole for allegedly assaulting one Betty Okoebor and disobeying constituted authorities.

Abhuere, who spoke on behalf of the Association for the Protection of Edo Cultural Values, urged the governor to forgive the dethroned traditional ruler in the interest of peace, harmony and development of Edo State.

The former NYSC DG said the deposition of the Onojie represented a sad chapter on the history of traditional system in the state.

Abhuere noted that the deposition was capable of creating disharmony and inter groups’ tension and suspicion in the state.

He said, “Yes, we know that the Onojie may have made mistakes and offended the last administration headed by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. But that would not be enough for outright dethronement given the political circumstances of the time and the emotional attachment of Edo people to their monarch.

“While the purpose of the dethronement remains blur and unclear. You will recall that the issues that led to the altercation between the government and the Onojie was political and from indications was not unintended to slight the government.

“However, it is not our responsibility to delve into the main issue that played up in question, I am pleading with the governor to temper justice with mercy and recall the dethroned Onojie to enhance our cultural sanctity and common heritage.

“In Esan land, kingship is highly cherished and revered. It is hereditary, the undisputed right of the king’s first son. The hereditary culture is so deep, entrenched and highly valued.”

  • Oshiomhole: He bucked the ‘change’ trend

Oshiomhole: He bucked the ‘change’ trend

THE year 2016 was unkind to incumbents within and without Nigeria. In the United States, President Barack Obama had looked forward to passing the torch to another Democrat  Hillary Clinton. A certain Donald Trump messed up his plans.

In the Gambia, President Yahya Jammeh who has been in office for 22 years, lost out to the opposition candidate Adama Barrow. Ghana’s incumbent president John Mahama was toppled by challenger Nana Akufo-Addo who successfully sold the ‘change’ agenda to voters.

The gubernatorial election in Ondo State was another where the incumbent Olusegun Mimiko wanted to secure his legacy by handing over to his personal choice  Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP. The dream dissolved in a puff of smoke.

It is against this backdrop that what Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State, pulled off becomes significant. An incumbent who had been in office for eight years was bound to lose some popularity over his policy choices.

Still, Oshiomhole was able to midwife the electoral triumph of his favoured successor. While speaking a few weeks ago, as he handed over the mantle of leadership to Governor Godwin Obaseki, he was asked what he would like to be remembered for. In his response, he left nobody in doubt that he was leaving office a fulfilled man because the candidate he backed had won.

Oshiomhole, who became governor of his home state eight years ago, through a keenly fought judicial battle, had to endure for nearly two years because the mandate was cornered by the ruling party through electoral manipulations. He also said he would like to be remembered as an ex-factory worker, leader of a textile union and national labour leader who fought godfatherism in Edo State and liberated the people.

The former governor was quick to add that after defeating all the political godfathers in the state, he was leaving behind a man who will continue from where he stopped.

Installing Obaseki as governor came in the face of formidable challenges and obstacles.

For a man who had the likes of Chiefs Tony Anenih and Tom Ikimi, former Governor Lucky Igbinedion and his super rich father, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Pastor Osagie Iyamu, and a host of other power brokers to contend with, after seeing off equally stiff opposition from his own party men like then Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, former Minister of State for Works Chris Ogiemwonyi and Ken Imansuagbon, Oshiomhole proved he’s a political giant to reckon with.

  • Oshiomhole: recession stopped my dream for Edo

Oshiomhole: recession stopped my dream for Edo

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has said the sudden crash in the state’s finances prevented him from achieving his dreams for the state.

The former governor said his administration was unable to execute already designed projects in many communities because of cash crunch.

Oshiomhole spoke at the weekend at Auchi during a grand reception organised for him by political and traditional leaders in Edo North Senatorial District.

He said he did not deliberately leave the projects undone or uncompleted, adding that the finances were not available.

The former governor, who apologised for getting late to the event, said he had to attend the All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ondo State because Edo State needed a friendly neighbour to do business with.

He apologised to those he might have offended but reiterated his stand on those he said he might also have offended while instilling discipline.

Oshiomhole said his successor, Godwin Obaseki, was aware of the Edo dream and would surpass his achievements.

He said: “There were many things we were committed to doing across the state, which we didn’t do due to the sudden crash in our finances.

“In Akoko-Edo, there are many communities that need to be connected to the economy of the state. There were so many things to be done, which we couldn’t do. No government will be able to solve all the problems.

“I thank God we have another APC governor, Obaseki. He understands the problem and knows what to do. We did our best in the 192 wards but we still have challenges. I know Godwin will tackle those challenges.

“I want say I am sorry to those I may have offended without knowing, but the ones I did to instil discipline, I stand by it.

“We were not perfect, but I thank you all for tolerating our excesses. Obaseki will do better than me. We pray God to guide him because I am happy he is a worthy successor.”

Political leaders, who spoke at the event, urged the Federal Government to give Oshiomhole an assignment where he would use his abundant talents to serve Nigerians.

A former Secretary to the Edo state Government (SSG) Simon Imuekhemen said the nation must not allow Oshiomhole’s abundant talents to be wasted.

He said: “We want Oshiomhole to play the type of politics he played in Edo State at the national level so that Nigerians will benefit from him too. We want Nigerians to benefit from his talents. We don’t want him to be confined where people will not benefit from his intelligence.

“We’re today proud to come from Edo North because Oshiomhole made all of us proud. The three senatorial districts of the state have benefited from Oshiomhole’s administration. I can tell you that Oshiomhole did three projects that we are very proud about here in Edo North. Firstly, the road from Ekperi to Anegbete; second is from Jattu to Emegbai and the Auchi erosion project.

“We believe that no other governor would have done these three projects for us if he was not our son. We hold him in very high esteem and he is our great son. We know that Obaseki is going to do well, especially when he has a strong politician like his deputy, Philip Shaibu. We have no fear at all. This team will do wonderfully well for our people.”
