    Oshiomhole in Edo history

Though continents apart, there are a surfeit of parallels between outgoing US President Barak Obama and retiring Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State. Both are not only southpaw and gifted orators, but also united on account of timing and circumstances of their ascension of office. Eight years ago, the world was confounded by the fairy tale of the son of an African immigrant, raised by the maternal grandparents, who clambered through all the odds to lead the most powerful white-dominated nation on earth.

The same way the Nigerian nation was enchanted by the legend of a lithe lowly factory worker who wrestled down boardroom giants, survived countless incarcerations, roused the labour movement from docility, and would come from the outside to seize power in Edo from ruthlessly entrenched godfathers. The tidings of Obama’s historic win in November 2008 were still ricocheting across the universe when the news of Oshiomhole’s victory filtered in from a Benin courtroom on November 11, drawing the curtains on a titanic legal duel to retrieve the mandate earlier stolen in April 2007 by the Peoples Democratic Party.

Just as Obama had to nurse America back from deep financial stupor, Oshiomhole met a state that had technically failed on account of sustained gang rape by a succession of military predators and marauding political godfathers. With despondency spreading like cancer across the communities, Edo, once the envy of Portuguese explorers in the fifteenth century, more or less became the new synonym for the exportation of human flesh to western red-light districts. Now approaching the exit point, though narrowly missing on Tuesday the chance of having his own anointed (Hillary Clinton) succeed him, Obama is still credited with high approval rating – an uncommon phenomenon in American politics. Ditto Oshiomhole who, however, bows out of office tomorrow not only in a blaze of glory but also with the distinction of being able to anoint his own successor.

Looking back, opinions will certainly be divided on Oshiomhole’s style. While his often abrasive rhetoric would grate the ears of those weaned on the diet of diplomatese, what is however undeniable is his deep passion to improve the human condition in Edo. For instance, with the once voracious floodwater now effectively tamed at the iconic 5- Junction, Uselu axis, Uwelu quarters, Siloko, Teachers’ House, Upper Lawani in Benin City today, the first-time visitor will probably take things for granted. But years back, precisely in 2002, this writer had a rather sour experience.

One had attended the burial ceremony of Kayode Komolafe’s (Thisday DMD’s) father in Igbara-Oke, Ondo State, and then attempted to connect Benin by road. It was raining and already evening when we arrived Uselu. Expectedly, the resultant flood had made a bedlam of vehicular traffic along that corridor. Before long, not only did the raging flood submerge my car up to the bonnet level, I soon found myself and driver gasping in muddy water inside! My immaculate white agbada suddenly transformed to brown.

That the perennial flood has now receded in that part of Benin City is partly the benefit of the gargantuan N30b storm-water project undertaken in the past six years. It is indeed a monument to Oshiomhole’s daring of a ruthless history, financial courage in the face of sparse resources. In the times ahead, the comrade-governor’s legacy will easily be defined not just by the massive transformation of Edo’s physical landscape but also the regicide of the old guard. While seeking to unravel possible battle stratagem that enabled Oshiomhole’s triumph over the hitherto fearsome godfathers at a valedictory colloquium in his honour in Benin last Sunday, erudite scholar, Professor Adebayo Williams, alluded to the adaptation of military tactics of reconnaissance and surprise attack. Well, what should be added is subversive diplomacy. Only that could explain Oshiomhole’s uncanny ability to charm the Abuja power-mongers for six harrowing years against yielding to the suffocating pressures from then almighty godfather, Chief Tony Anenih, to deploy federal might to over-run the plucky irritant at the Dennis Osadebey Avenue.

The Oshiomhole administration was conceived in war in 2008 and had to stay vigilant, day and night, till PDP was displaced from Abuja in 2015. As his Information Commissioner at some point, this writer had the privilege of a ringside seat during some of those dark moments. Federal instruments were mindlessly deployed to intimidate the ACN (now APC) government in Edo. At the godfather’ instance, agencies like EFCC were used to harass and torment government officials ceaselessly.

By 2014, it is on record that one of Oshiomhole’s commissioners had clocked about 100 trips to EFFC to answer anonymous petitions making fictitious claims! During Oshiomhole’s first year in office, PDP completely dominated the state assembly, thus rendering the governor a lame target for Anenih’s snipers. Not until the stolen seats at the Anthony Enahoro House were recovered one after the other through a painstaking legal cockfight lasting another year did the former labour leader eventually find his caustic tongue and begin to spread his wings.

To neutralize the conclave of godfathers including Anenih and the Igbinedions, Oshiomhole knew he had no choice than to toil tirelessly. To remind the people of the sordid past when public fund was privatized, a giant bill board screaming “No more for the godfather!” was often hoisted by each school, road or hospital project. Not even federal establishments like police and army barracks were left out of the projects bonanza. So much that when a retired General was fielded by PDP in the 2012 polls, results from the barracks showed that soldiers and their wives voted massively for Oshiomhole.

The latest person to attest Oshiomhole’s indelible infrastructural footprints is President Muhammadu Buhari. After inspecting and commissioning two of such legacy projects (a 200-bed five-star hospital in Benin and a brandnew university in Iyamo), PMB, ordinarily austere with words, was full of adulations for the outgoing governor. By Buhari’s own account, today’s Benin has almost become unrecognizable compared to the picture of the rustic city he was forced to reside three decades ago.

Since he became president, outside his native Katsina, Edo should rank as one of Buhari’s most preferred destinations for official visit. Between May 2015 and now, he has visited the state thrice. This, said he, is “only because Oshiomhole has done well. Each time, I always have good projects to commission.”

The weight those words carry is better appreciated given Buhari’s own involvement in the narrative of the old Bendel State on account of an accident of history. Precisely 30 years ago, a nondescript bungalow at No 8 Commercial Street in Benin GRA became his new detention camp after a stint in Akure following the August 27, 1985 palace coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Though he would spend the next two years in solitary confinement, Buhari, from the “secrets” declassified these past few days, still found ingenious means to feel the pulse of his immediate surrounding, if not the nation at large. His cook then has since grown through the ranks to become the present chief matron at the Benin Government House. It was, therefore, quite an emotional moment between the former political prisoner and the care-giver after Oshiomhole introduced Mrs. Grace Ilechukwu to the president during the luncheon Monday afternoon.

Two, while Buhari’s detention lasted, the then military administrator, Brigadier John Inienger, creatively devised a means of getting newspapers to him, at a huge risk with his then commander-in-chief (IBB) in Lagos. The unwitting “smuggler” was no other than Senator Ehigie Uzamere, then a senior architect with the Bendel Development and Property Authority. Inienger, recalled Uzamere to this writer with an impish smile, tersely stated he wanted newspapers supplied daily to “my close relation staying No 8”.

That was how the then starry-eyed civil servant began to drop off newspapers at the gate of the said house each morning for close to two years, without ever having the faintest clue the recipient was actually the nation’s biggest political prisoner and the immediate past No. 1 citizen. On arrival in Benin last Monday, the president, forever a man of simple taste, preferred to stay in a very modest apartment in the Goldmine, the Guest House inside the Government House complex. The governor and wife had already evacuated their own apartment on the eve of Buhari’s visit but were soon told the august visitor would just be fine with the “small place”.

BUT beyond the issue of brick and mortal lauded these past few days, more far-reaching is Oshiomhole’s dismantling of the pillars of Tuketuke politics as embodied by the old barons of the PDP. That had meant the disempowerment of the people over the years by a small fraternity of profiteering godfathers.

While the primaries that produced the flag-bearers for both APC and PDP in the September 28 polls were undoubtedly rancorous, at least there was a consensus among the local political class that intra-party democracy was growing, unlike in the past when the godfather would arrogantly foreclose any contest and unilaterally dictate who got what. In the final analysis, it would be intellectually dishonest not to acknowledge a new concern. Even as the ashes at the funeral pyre of the old order begin to wax cold, some are beginning to express apprehension at the prospects of godfatherism resurrecting in another form elsewhere.

While such fear is indeed legitimate, let it however be said that such reading abysmally fails to be cognizant of the logic of change. Once the people had already tasted the honey of “one man, one vote”, they are unlikely to easily cower before the forces of imposition next time without a fight. If nothing at all, Oshiomhole already deserves praise for the new culture. So, will the furiously adamant Adams, master of withering wit, the Nemesis of PDP, the conqueror of Anenih and other little political gods and the scourge of Tuketuke politics now step forward and take a bow.

    PMB, Magu & ‘the cabal’

Anyone still wondering why the hardworking Ibrahim Magu has not been confirmed EFCC chairman yet, one year on, could not be familiar with high-wire intrigues in Abuja. Statutorily, the Senate confirms the nomination. But the presidency originates the memo.

But the truth is emerging. Since Magu had the temerity to touch cases where members of the now familiar “cabal” nestling in the presidency had interest, there no no urgency to forward the critical memo to the National Assembly. Then, President Muhammadu Buhari had to be abroad on a short medical trip.

The acting president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, a pious man not given to malice but driven only by desire to get results, caused the memo to be sent the Senate. The “cabal” was caught off-guard. Not to worry, on Buhari’s return, they resolved to activate the “network” in the legislature to mount a fresh hurdle.

Yes, virtually everyone nominated the same time with the EFCC boss has been confirmed. As for Magu, the memo was not enough; he needs to bring DSS clearance as well. There now lies the new “roadblock”. The “cabal” has a foothold in DSS. The Cold War between the “cabal” and the EFCC acting chair played out in the recruitment of DSS to enforce the night raid on the homes of top judges suspected of sleaze.

Until the president reportedly directed the SSS to allow EFCC take over the matter. It is in this light that the rest of the nation is waiting on President Muhammadu Buhari to take a step further and stop all these shenanigans.

It is one thing for the political leadership to formulate policies; it is another thing to have a crop of committed disciples to implement the vision. So far, no one can deny the commitment of Magu in providing new vigour to EFCC in the war against corruption. He has demonstrated uncommon passion for his job in the last twelve months. But as things stand today, Magu could not be said to have even an appointment letter. It is really funny.

    Oshiomhole hands over today

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole will today hand over power to Governor-elect Godwin Obaseki.

But Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, will be sworn in on Saturday at the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, the state cpital, by the Chief Judge (CJ), Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

At the inauguration of the Edo University at Iyamho, Oshiomhole said he would hand over today.

The outgoing governor said God had answered his prayers to finish well and strong.

    Oshiomhole holds valedictory Exco meeting

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday presided over his last State Executive Council (Exco).

The governor hailed members of the Council for their steadfastness, commitment, industry and resourcefulness, which he said contributed to the success of his administration.

Addressing the valedictory Exco session at the Government House in Benin, the state capital, Oshiomhole said: “Let me thank each and every one of you for what God has used you to do for our people, for our great state. Let me say publicly that I do believe the evidence is there, that members of this State Executive Council are the least-paid and work the hardest, compared to any other state that I know of. I also know that we have had to work long hours.

“I recall a meeting we had, starting at 9 a.m without an adjournment and staying all the way till 7 a.m the following day. There was no break, no adjournment. We all agreed that we would do that and we would not adjourn until we addressed the issue of the viability of this state so that we can deliver on our promises.”

Suspended Edo monarch sues Oshiomhole, others for N1b

The traditional ruler of Uromi Kingdom in Edo State, the Ojuromi of Uromi, HRH Anslem Eidenojie II, has filed a suit against Governor Adams Oshiomhole and 11 others following his suspension from office.

The embattled monarch is asking for N1 billion as compensation for general, aggravated and exemplary damages against the respondents – jointly and severally.

He said the amount is for the reparation against the alleged assault, torture, arrest, detention and harassment the respondents committed against him.

Eidenojie was suspended for one year by the state government for allegedly assaulting Ms Betty Okoebor and travelling without permission from constituted authorities, among other alleged infractions.

Other respondents in the suit are: Police Commissioner Haliru Gwandu, ASP Natuke, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 5, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in Abuja, the Police Force, Betty Okoebor, Matthew Okoebor and the State Executive Council (Exco).

In the suit filed by his lawyer Benjamin Iruobe, the plaintiff is asking the court for a declaration that the governor’s action was recklessness and an abuse of office.

He added that it was also unconstitutional, unlawful, actionable and without a just cause.

The monarch said the suit was pursuant to Orders 2 and 4 of the Fundamental Rights Procedure Rules 2009 of the administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, among others.

Eidenojie is also seeking an order of the court for the enforcement of his fundamental rights under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The monarch is also praying the court for an injunction restraining the defendants – by themselves, agents, servants and or privies or such other persons – from oppressing him or imposing any inhibition or restrictions on his freedom of movement or agents and family over his complaint.

He is asking the court to declare that the arrest, psychological torture, detention and his embarrassment by the respondents from 10 a.m till 7 p.m on November 4 was unconstitutional, unlawful, actionable and without a just cause.

The embattled monarch is also asking the court to order the respondents to tender public apology to him over the complaint.

In a 44-paragraph affidavit supporting the suit, the plaintiff said he was arrested on November 4 at 10 a.m and detained till 7 p.m (nine hours) at the office of Edo State police commissioner.

He said Betty Okoebor was ready to withdraw her complaint against him as she did not want him to be prosecuted, after they had settled the matter at home.

  • Oshiomhole suspends Edo traditional ruler for one year

Oshiomhole suspends Edo traditional ruler for one year

Edo State Government has rejected the apologies tendered by the Ojuromi of Uromi, Zaiki Edenojie II.

It rather suspended the Onojie of Uromi for one year for failing to apologise within the stipulated period to a woman, Ms Betty Okoeber, whom the Onojie allegedly assaulted on September 28, at a polling unit in Uromi.

The traditional ruler was earlier suspended for seven days and asked to apologise for disobeying constituted authorities and allegedly assaulting a woman.

Intervention by some political leaders of Uromi saw the alleged victim tendering apologies to the Onojie.

In his letter of apologies to the state government, the embattled Onojie said the victim has followed the custom and reconciled herself to the Throne as a daughter.

He apologised for not replying the query within the stipulated time and “not obtaining permission before I travelled outside the country.”

In a letter dated November 4, 2016 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, the state government said the one-year suspension takes effect from Monday, November 7.

The letter reads: “The Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole is in receipt of your letter of 28th October, 2016 on the above subject matter.

“Mr. Governor observed that your activities since you were initially suspended from office as Ojuromi of Uromi have raised issues that require further determination.

“It is important, for record purposes, to recount what has led to the present situation.

“Discounting your previous conduct, on the 28th of September 2016, you left your Palace during voting and moved from polling booth to polling booth campaigning and trying to coerce voters to vote for your preferred party and candidate.

“You went to a polling booth which was not where you registered to vote and tried to compel others to vote for your preferred candidate when one of the voters, Ms. Betty Okoebor refused to yield to your threats. You assaulted her causing grievous bodily harm.

“Following from this, the Government, viewing your conduct as utterly embarrassing, disgraceful and unbecoming of a traditional ruler, issued you with a query and directed that you reply within 72 hours.

“You ignored the query, travelled not just out of your domain but outside the country without permission.

“The flagrant arrogance of power and disregard for constituted authority compelled the State Executive Council in Session to suspend you from office as Ojuromi of Uromi for seven days in exercise of its legal powers.

“You were directed not to parade yourself as Ojuromi, carry out any activity as Ojuromi, to apologise to Ms. Okoebor and also to the Edo State Government.

“It is instructive to note that in your “Letter of Apology” of 28th October, 2016, you trivialised the gravity of your misconduct by describing what took place in public glare on the 28th of September where you were the assailant as an “altercation” and “family” affair.

“Your public assault and disgrace of a citizen of the Federal Republic, in your estimation, was a non-issue.

“To ridicule the Edo State Government and deride the directive that you apologise to Ms. Okoebor, you proceeded to organise a “forgiveness Session” in your Palace in your capacity as Ojuromi, wearing a crown even when you were still suspended from office, purporting to be “forgiving” Ms. Okoebor.

”At the said “forgiveness session”, you compelled the victim of your assault to apologise to you for the assault against her person while on her knees and made to remain in same position while being interviewed by journalists.

“You had the embarrassing session videoed and aired repeatedly on television subjecting Ms. Okoebor to double jeopardy and double disgrace by expanding the frontiers of her embarrassment to a global level through the electronic and social media.

“This represents nothing short of a deliberate effort to further aggravate the pain and humiliation of your victim.

“You claimed in your letter that Ms. Okoebor had “reconciled herself to the Throne” which conveys the impression that you still represented the Throne from which you had been suspended and further stated that she is your “subject” and you had “forgiven” her.

“This was in gross violation of the terms of your suspension from office as provided for in extant laws.

“The Government of Edo State does not accept that there are “subjects” in Nigeria but citizens of the Federal Republic.

“You will recall that the assault on Ms. Okoebor which was incidented at the Uromi Police Station on September 28, 2016, remains under investigation by the Police as a criminal act.

“This act, which in itself negates expectations from the exalted office of a traditional ruler, cannot be tolerated by the government in a constitutional democracy.

“Government has also received official security reports as to your high handedness in addressing relations with operators of the cattle market in Uromi to wit: unilaterally dissolving their association; appointing your preferred person to head the association, banishing their elected leader from Uromi, illegally taking over the cattle market and stalls that they built themselves, banning about eight butchers from doing business in the Uromi market and assigning the responsibility for collecting revenue for the Local Government Council to your own preferred person even without authority from the Council.

“You equally laid claim to ownership of the land, which was legally allocated to the cattle marketers in the year 2000, among other infractions.

“These are not the actions of a law abiding traditional ruler who believes in promoting peace, unity and development in Uromi communities.

“The Government of Edo State has high regards for traditional institutions and for the values and customs of our people.

“However, the Government, shall, under no condition, tolerate indiscipline, reckless abuse of traditional privileges, disrespect for its pronouncements, and flagrant humiliation of law-abiding citizens of the State.

“In view of the facts established above, taking cognizance of your letter of apology that falls short of the public apology expected from you within the stipulated time, and the earlier suspension letter which had specified dethronement after seven days; in exercise of its powers, the Government of Edo State hereby commutes your dethronement to a one-year suspension from office as Ojuromi of Uromi in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law (1979) with effect from the 7th of November, 2016.

“During this period of suspension under extant laws, you are hereby stripped of all the privileges and rights of the Ojuromi of Uromi and barred from performing any duties whatsoever in that regard.

“By virtue of this suspension from office, your remuneration from the 5 percent monthly FAC allocation to the Local Government shall be appropriated and donated to orphanages during this period.”

  • President for Edo as APC celebrates Oshiomhole

President for Edo as APC celebrates Oshiomhole

President Muhammadu Buhari will next week visit Edo State for two days.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Julius Ihonvbere, said the visit will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

It added that the President would visit His Royal Majesty, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

The statement also said President Buhari would inaugurate key projects, including the five-star Central Hospital in Benin, the state capital; the Upper Siluko Road and the Samuel Ogbemudia College (formerly New Era College, Benin).

He will also inaugurate the Edo University at Iyamho and the Ugbegun-Ujiogba-Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi Road.

The President will also inspect the reclaimed Queen Ede Erosion site in Benin.

Ahead of the President’s visit, the Southsouth zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will on Sunday celebrate outgoing Governor Adams Oshiomhole at a colloquium and send-off dinner in honour of his remarkable achievements in office.

The events, scheduled for the Best Western Home Ville Hotel in Benin, are coming one week to the end of the two-term governor’s tenure.

  • Bidding Oshiomhole farewell

The National Economic Council (NEC) meeting last Tuesday stood still for out-going governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The governor was attending his last NEC meeting as his eight years tenure will expire on November 12 when he will officially hand over the reins of power to the governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki.

The NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo commended Oshiomhole for his successful two terms and positive impact on his state, his great contributions in the Council and his high performances in other national assignments given to him during his tenure.

The Council was also impressed with the role he played in the campaign period leading to the election of Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Members were particularly delighted that Oshiomhole was able to ensure that the ruling party, APC did not lose its only state in the Southsouth geo-political zone to the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He successfully kept the opposition’s power brokers in the state at bay and prevented the claws of the PDP from grabbing the number one seat in Edo thrice.

Against all odds, he flushed out the PDP from power in 2008, defeated the party when he contested for second term in 2012 and played a major role in the emergence of Obaseki in 2016.

The Council ended up giving Oshiomhole, who attended his last NEC meeting with Obaseki, a standing ovation.

It also ensured that Oshiomhole was part of the three governors that briefed State House correspondents at the end of NEC meeting last Tuesday.

Shedding light on what transpired during the NEC’s closed-door meeting, Adamawa State Governor, Jibrilla Bindow said: “As you are aware we just concluded the NEC meeting and one of the issues we discussed is on the exit of our brother, whom I regard as my uncle, Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

“It is going to be the last time he is going to attend the NEC. We all know his reputation, especially when it comes to integrity, honesty and commitment to his people in Edo State.

“We are going to miss him. And we hope Almighty Allah will  protect him, give him good health and long life because we all know what Governor Adams Oshiomhole has done in this country even during his labour time up to his time as executive governor of Edo State.

“And by the grace of God, He will also lift him to come and do another national assignment. All of us prayed for him and his family and we gave him three kudos and a standing ovation.

“We all clapped for him for almost twenty minutes because, like I said earlier, Adams Oshiomhole is a man of his words and we are going to miss him greatly.” He stated

But the exit of Oshiomhole from the NEC last week may not be for too long as some Nigerians already believed that he may be compensated with a ministerial job.

If their wishes come through and Oshiomhole happened to get a portfolio of one of the ministries that are members of NEC, then he will just return to be a regular face in NEC.

But if Oshiomhole does not become a cabinet member soon, other Nigerians believed that he will emerge the National Chairman of the APC in no distant time.

No matter where the pendulum swings to, it seemed that Oshiomhole will not really be idle in the coming months.

    Oil to the rescue

With the dwindling revenue from oil as a result its falling prices in the international market, the Nigerian economy have been battered since the beginning of this administration.

The economy crumbled because Nigeria’s economy was over 90 percent dependent on oil revenues.

There is hardly any household in the country especially among the low and medium income earners that has no ugly story to tell about the current economic challenges.

The teeming unemployed youths, without any means of income, are definitely going through the worst times of their lives.

But President Mohammadu Buhari believed that the same oil industry could still be exploited to quickly reflate the economy.

Buhari, while launching the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Roadmap tagged ‘The 7 Big Wins’ at the old Banquet Hall of the State House last Thursday said: “The Petroleum industry remains critical to the Nigerian economy of today and the future, despite our current challenges.

“The golden era of high oil prices may not be here now, but Oil and Gas resources still remain the most immediate and practical keys out of our present economic crisis.

“Oil and Gas still remain a critical enabler for the successful implementation of our budget as well as the source of funds for laying a strong foundation for a new and more diversified economy.

“As important as it is to ensure that Agriculture, Solid minerals and other critical sectors of the economy are supported to grow and contribute more to the nation’s economy, we still need a virile and efficient oil & gas industry to take care of our foreign exchange requirements.

“This is a national imperative and a core thrust of our economic policy. Therefore, the task before the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is to maximise the potentials and opportunities across the whole range of the Oil and Gas industry to stimulate our economy in spite of the current challenges.

“To do this certainly requires creativity, innovation, technology and robust partnership amongst various stakeholders.

“If we are able to plug the leakages, and tighten loose systems that characterized this industry in the days of high oil prices, we are convinced that we can do even more with the little that we are getting at the moment than we did even in the time of plenty.” He stated

The seven big wins, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, planned to deploy to change the oil industry and by extension boosting the Nigerian economy include Policy and Regulation, Business Environment and Investment Drive.

Others are Gas Revolution, Refineries and Local Production capacity, Niger Delta and Security, Transparency and Efficiency and Stakeholder Management  & International Co-ordination.

It is hoped that the 7 big wins will really be big and quick enough to salvage the economy at this hard times.

The nation urgently needed this as other measures to reflate the economy like diversification into agriculture and solid minerals development will still take more time for Nigerians to start seeing their tangible results.

Obaseki more competent than me, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday said Governor-elect Godwin Obaseki is more competent than him.

The governor assured that his successor would bring more development to the state.

Oshiomhole is scheduled to hand over to Obaseki next month after eight years in the saddle.

The governor addressed State House correspondents after Progressives Governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

Oshiomhole, who worked tirelessly for Obaseki to win the September 28 election, said he did not care if Obaseki betrays him at the end of the day.

Obaseki’s allegiance, he said, should be to the people and not to him.

The governor also said his service to Edo State was the ace card he used to give the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration an edge over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had ruled the state for nine years.

He said: “That is very important, if you say he will disappoint me. I am not the state; I am only one out of about four million Edo people. So, his obligation and his loyalty should be to the people of Edo State.

“The oath of office he is going to subscribe to says that he will defend the Constitution of Nigeria; he will do everything to uplift the quality of life of Edo people. Nothing in his oath office will include ‘I shall not betray my predecessor’ because I have no interest to be betrayed.

“For me, I have presided over the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for eight years and I had a successor. There was no story of me having a conflict with my predecessor. This is because a conflict only arises when you refuse to accept that when your tenure is over, it is over.”

PDP rigged Edo election – Oshimhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has fired back at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, saying they were the actual riggers of the September 28 governorship election in the state.

He said Pastor Ize-Iyamu could not have scored more than 50,000 votes if the election was not rigged.

Oshiomhole, who spoke while addressing the All Progressive Congress (APC) youths during a road show, said he was prepared to meet the PDP in court and show how the party and its candidate rigged the election.

The governor said: “We are happy with the outcome of the election. We have gone to present the candidate to the Crown Prince, the Edaiken N’Uselu, and he (Obaseki) has been very well received.

“Thank you for coming out to celebrate. I am sure we encouraged our opponents to go to court. We will be able to lead evidence to show how much they profited from electoral fraud because the Ize-Iyamu that I know is not worthy of 50,000 votes.”

“So, it’s like an armed robber rushing to the police station with bullet wounds and claiming that he has been shot, whereas he was the one who opened fire on very innocent people. We will expose them where it matters in our courtrooms. Remain firm and resolute.

“For me, I am happy. The political funeral of the godfathers is final. There is nothing they can do to turn the will of God. So, this is our finest hour and I can’t wait to meet them in court.”

A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, yesterday hailed the Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, for giving the people of Edo a worthy successor.

Sylva, the Bayelsa State candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election in the state, congratulated the governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki, and the people of Edo State on the victory of APC.

The former governor, in a statement in Yenagoa signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, specially praised Oshiomhole for “a worthy cause to deliver a worthy successor to the people of Edo State. “

He said: “We send our congratulations to you, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on your victory at the poll. This feat has done our great party, APC, and the people of the South-South proud. It is a cheery reaffirmation of the place of the South-South in the national change movement.

“Special congratulations also go to the governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, for staying the course, despite visible adversity, in a worthy cause to deliver a worthy successor to the people of Edo State.

“You have given Edo people a worthy replacement who would not only continue your lofty ideals but would consistently push the envelope of social and economic progress for the greatest good of the people.

“We salute the entire people of Edo State, who are the ultimate winners of this election, as they prepare to enter yet another season of progress.

“We wish the people of Edo State, the governor and the incoming governor a prosperous tenure.”
