  • Osun APC berates PDP for circulating false stories

THE Osun State All Progressives Congress has berated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for circulating “false, scandalous and defamatory stories against the Court of Appeal”.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi, the APC said the “PDP leadership has to cultivate some responsible decorum in its political engagement, which appears to be deteriorating by the day, particularly in Osun State”.

The APC was reacting to a statement credited to the PDP in a section of the media that Justice Joseph Oyewole was a member of the Court of Appeal hearing a petition against the declaration of the APC and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, as the winner of the September 22 and 27, 2018 Osun governorship polls.

The party said its investigation revealed that Justice Oyewole was never listed as a member of the panel of judges set up to hear the APC appeal against the electoral tribunal’s judgment.”

The APC decried what it described as “the PDP’s penchant for lies, disinformation and incitement to violence that has allegedly become the party’s trademark in Osun State.”

According to the party: “It is totally irresponsible for the PDP and its minions to so unjustly and viciously defame, as well as cast scurrilous aspersion on a judge of the Court of Appeal for no just reason whatsoever.

“The PDP’s comfort zone in Osun is to hide behind a mountain of lies and subterfuge to scandalise people of integrity and create an atmosphere of confusion in order to incite violence.

“We have had enough of this failed strategy by the PDP in Osun State. It is time the PDP was held accountable for its disruptive approach to politics that threatens social order and peace.”

  • Judgment won’t stand, says Osun APC

In a swift reaction to the judgment yesterday, the APC in Osun State rejected the Election Petition Tribunal’s verdict.

A statement issued by the APC’s Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, yesterday said “the verdict cannot stand superior legal scrutiny. Therefore we will appeal against it.”

The Osun State Government also urged the people to remain calm and go about their lawful activities following the tribunal judgment.

It reassured the people of their safety as well as the security of their property, saying that the “government of the State is still the only legitimate Government having the authority to govern the State.”

The statement said an appeal on the judgment had been filed.

A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr. Wole Oyebamiji, said: “The Government of the State of Osun wishes to appreciate the teeming support of the majority of the people in all things essential for mutual progress.

“As it is, the administration of His Excellency, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Governor, State of Osun, wishes to assure the people that the judgment of the Election Tribunal has been put on appeal.

“This is to further assure all the residents of the State of adequate security of lives and properties, as the Government of the State is still the only legitimate Government having the authority to govern the State.

“We assure all our people that justice will prevail at last, and the law enforcement agencies have been instructed to maintain law and order across the state.

“We, therefore, urge all the residents of the state to go about their lawful duties without any hindrance.”

  • Osun APC accuses PDP of attacking 18 members in Ila-Orangun

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of attacking its 18 members in Ila-Orangun, the headquarters of Ila Local Government Area, last Saturday.

The party said it transferred the injured, yesterday, to the State Hospital in Asubiaro, Osogbo, the state capital.

The state’s APC Chairman Gboyega Famodun told reporters that the victims had been admitted at the State Hospital in Ila-Orangun before they were transferred to Osogbo for further treatment.

According to him, a victim, Adebayo Ismail, told the party leaders that some political thugs attacked them with cutlasses and other weapons last Saturday.

The APC chairman, who urged the police to intervene in the matter and end the political attacks in the state, said the trend could cause a political crisis.

He said the PDP in its “desperate bid” to wrestle power from the APC had resorted to violence.

Famodun said: “In Ila-Orangun on Saturday morning, hoodlums suspected to be political thugs working for the PDP attacked my members with cutlasses, guns, knives and machetes. They were shooting sporadically into the air and at times attempted to shoot at our people.

“Also, there were serious attacks in Atakunmosa East. Houses were burnt, our party chairman at the council was harassed, his houses were burnt. The index finger of the son of Iyaloja Atakunmosa was cut off by the hoodlums.”

But the state’s PDP Chairman Soji Adagunodo accused the police of not providing tight security for his members.

He said PDP supporters had been facing series of attacks since last Thursday.

Adagunodo told reporters that the PDP was compiling a list of its attacked members with the aim of forwarding it to police authorities in the state.

Describing the APC as a group of propaganda mongers, Adgunodo said: “They are again trying to implicate our party members, the PDP, and make the police enforce frivolous arrests.”

He referred to a petition written to the police by the APC against PDP members in Ila Local Government Area, saying: “We don’t know how they came about 18 APC injured members allegedly taken to the State Hospital at Asubiaro in Osogbo and claiming that the PDP members attacked them.

“They wore bandages on their legs, arms, heads and other parts of their bodies, but at a close observation showed that their claims of attacks, injuries, etc, are mere frame-up. There were no injuries on the 18 people who carried bandages all over their bodies.

“In order to remain impartial, the police commissioner in Osun State should, as a matter of duty, probe the hospital, the policemen, who investigated the story and came out with a clean bill to convince Nigerians and Osun people as an unbiased umpire in the present situation.

“We also expect that, possibly, the police authorities will apply appropriate sanctions against them as a deterrent to others who may want to create confusion in our dear state.”

Also, Police Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Abiodun Ige, assured that the culprits would be apprehended and prosecuted.

The police chief, who advised the politicians to play the game according to the rules, warned that the command would not tolerate any act of lawlessness.

  • You’re misinformed, Osun APC tells NOA chief Abari

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the reported statement of the National Orientation Agency boss, Dr. Garba Abari, that the rerun election victory of the party in the last governorship election was “clearly” decided by money.

Dr. Abari reported made the statement at the weekend in Abuja, the nation’s capital, that he had “monitored and seen the role of money in the Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and of course, the most dramatic is the Osun rerun election where clearly it was money that decided the winner”.

But the party described the statement as “unfortunate and factually inaccurate”.

“We don’t know what Dr. Abari knows about Ekiti and Ondo states” elections and how they were influenced by money. But we hold that he lacks factual knowledge of what happened in our state,” Osun APC said.

A statement yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, by APC’s Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, reads: “If Dr. Abari actually monitored the Osun election, he would have seen how the Adeleke family used money so brazenly that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate almost stole victory, but for the fortuitous re-run.

“Our candidate eventually won the election because of the heightened security mounted in and around the polling stations to prevent fraud and stop PDP mercenaries that were mobilised and monitored to steal victory.

“The PDP lost. Now, Dr. Abari is trying to create the impression that the APC won the rerun by buying the votes. That is an alternative fact, which is pure and simple: fake news.”

APC added: “If anybody or party used money to influence the last Osun governorship election, it was the PDP candidate and the Adeleke family.

“The NOA boss may have been misinformed; otherwise, he was biased against the APC. We cannot find any other explanation for such unverifiable statement from Abari on the rerun.”

  • 2019: Akande predicts victory for Osun APC

Former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande has predicted victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State. He said the Osun Central senatorial candidate, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, will triumph at the next year’s general elections.

Akande spoke when the Ajibola Basiru Campaign Organisation (ABCO) paid him a courtesy visit in his country home,  Ila-Orangun.  The octogenarian politician lauded Basiru for putting in place what he described as lofty programmes for the people of the district.

He called for synergy among the various organs of the party for better performance at the general elections. He assured the APC senatorial candidate of his unwavering support during and after the elections.

Basiru paid glowing tributes to the former governor for the fatherly roles he has been playing in the affairs of the party since its formation in 2014. He noted that Akande as the pioneer national chairman laid a solid foundation for the party.

The campaign team visited some communities, including Alagbede, Ayegun, Oyeadunni, Oyi-Aratumi , Elemo-Ogun, Olotu, Isinmi –Enle and Ajebandele  all in Ifedayo Local Government. He promised to bring federal presence to the area to boost socio-economic activities in the area..

Basiru expressed gratitude for the massive support given to the APC  by the people of Ifedayo Local Government during the last governorship election.

Responding on behalf of other community leaders, Alhaji  Jimoh Adebisi Pidan discosed that  the people  of the area had resolved to vote for Basiru and other APC candidates during the general elections. He said their decision was influenced by the developmental projects that APC had executed in the area, particularly access roads that enable farmers to transport their produce to market.

The high point of the visit was the distribution of exercise books and other writing materials by Ajibola Basiru Campaign Organisation to the students of Oke-Ila Government High School.

  • Osun APC pledges to support Oyetola’s govt

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has pledged to support Governor Gboyega Oyetola, who assumed office on Tuesday.

A statement in Osogbo, the state capital, by the party’s Chairman Gboyega Famodun, said: “We are grateful to God for the smooth transfer of power from the former governor to the incumbent, who has been at the core of policy designs and implementation of the former government of the party.

“This seamless transfer of power, which Osun badly needed, ensures that the continuity of the success of the previous administration will be an important template on which the new administration will build.

“We, as dedicated leaders of the party, have absolute confidence in the current governor to perform creditably in taking Osun to another level of development.

“We, therefore, pledge our loyalty and continued support for the governor in his effort to make Osun a much better place than he took over from the exceptional Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola.

  • Osun APC chieftain resigns, defects to PDP

Mr Peter Babalola, the Chairman of Osun Local Government Service Commission, has resigned his appointment and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Babalola, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a letter to Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, said he resigned to pursue other endeavours.

The News Agency of Nigeria  reports that Babalola was one of the 17 APC aspirants in the July 19 governorship primary in which Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola emerged the winner.

Babalola, who was received by the South West PDP Deputy Chairman, Mr Yomi Akinwonmi, and the State Chairman, Mr Soji Adagunodo, at the party secretariat on Friday in Osogbo, said he left the APC because of imposition and impunity.

He expressed the belief that the next governor ought to come from Osun West.

Babalola promised to work with the PDP in order to ensure victory for its candidate in the Sept. 22 governorship election.

In his remarks, Akinwonmi, who represented the National Chairman of the party, Mr Uche Secondus, said that Babalola took the right step by leaving APC.

He urged PDP members in APC to return to the party, saying equal rights and privileges would be given to them.

Also speaking, Adagunodo said that the party recently received more than 5,000 APC members in Ila Local Government Area of the state.

But the APC Publicity Secretary in Osun, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, said Babalola’s defection was a personal choice based on the agitation that Osun West should be given a chance for the governorship slot.

He, however, wished Babalola well in his political career, adding that the party still remains strong in his absence.

  • Osun APC sets up committee for September poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has constituted a committee to oversee the September 22 governorship election for the party’s candidate, Mr. Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola.

In a statement on Wednesday, APC State Chairman Gboyega Famoodun said the committee would have four levels with the Central Campaign Co-ordinating Centre (CCCC), to be headed by him, as the apex body.

The statement said each senatorial district has a campaign committee that will be headed by a director general.

It added: “The Osun Central Senatorial District Campaign Committee is headed by Mr. Sola Oladepo. The Osun East Senatorial District Campaign Committee has Israel Ajibola Famurewa as its Director-General. Najeem Salaam is the Director-General of the West Senatorial District Campaign Committee.

“Each of the senatorial district campaign committees will have sub-divisions of Federal Constituency Campaign Committees that will comprise Organisation, Contact and Mobilisation, Media and Publicity, Security, Legal Affairs, Women and Youths Affairs.

“The campaign will be directed and supervised by Famodun from the Osun Central Campaign Co-ordinating Centre (HQ). It will include the flag bearer of the party, Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola, and his deputy, Mr. Gboyega Benedict Alabi, as well as the directors-general of the three senatorial districts, the state Secretary of the party, Alhaji Rasaq Salinshile and Dr. Ajibola Basiru.”

The statement said membership of the sub-committees will be announced later.

  • Why I left Osun APC for ADP, by ex-deputy chair

•Defectors freedom of association, says party

A former Deputy Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Alhaji Azeez Adesiji, has explained why he defected to a new political platform, the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

He accused the leadership of the ruling party of “nepotism, impunity and unconcerned attitude”.

Adesiji defected with eight other members of the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party.

Addressing reporters, he said: “With other State Exco members, I have decided to make it known to you all that we have defected into a new, credible, alternative party because of impunity and undemocratic practices we witnessed in our former party, APC in Osun State, which is unbecoming of an acclaimed progressive party.

“Among the 780 local government executives in the APC in Osun State, 580 are moving with me, the deputy state chairman of the party, to our new party, the ADP.

“Also, among the 8,632 executives at the ward level in the APC, 5,620 are also joining the train to ADP.”

Also, nine members of the SWC of the APC in Osun State defected to ADP.

They had tendered their letters of resignation to the chairman of the party, Mr. Gboyega Famodun.

According to them, they took the decision after due consultations with their mentors, close political associates, the public and lovers of the party.

The nine among the 16 state officers were led by APC Deputy State Chairman, Alhaji Azeez Issa Adesiji.

Others are: Alhaji Tajudeen Agbeti (ex-officio), Prince Ademola Bamidele (State Auditor), Alhaji Rasheed Bakare (Assistant General Secretary), Akinola Morakinyo (State PRO), Wole Adunola (ex-officio), Dr. Idayat Bakare (Assistant Welfare Secretary), Mrs. Ogundare Aina Afolabi (Assistant PRO) and Alhaji Sikiru Karim (Assistant Treasurer).

But APC said the defectors have the liberty to exercise their right of association.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi, the party said: “Their reason for leaving is not convincing. They think that by claiming they are leaving with so-called 6,000 followers is going to make them the next government in Osun. They live in a fool’s paradise.

“They underrated the issue involved in the next election. It is not about an individual, it is collective. And it is about the legacy of eight solid years of enviable achievements. If they don’t see anything good to defend in what has happened in the APC in the last eight years, it is too bad for the defectors.

“Even their governorship candidate, Alhaji Adeoti, admitted on radio that even the blind could see the good work of Governor Rauf Aregbesola. And we ask: ‘Which party is best suited to continue with that good work? The answer surely is the APC, and it has the capacity and capability in Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, its candidate for September 22 governorship election.”

  • Osun APC, PDP: Coping with post-primary crises

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties are warming up for the governorship election in Osun State. But, their shadow polls generated controversies. Correspondent SOJI ADENIYI examines how the parties are coping with their post-primary crises

There is no single political party in Osun State that is insulated from post-primary crisis. Intrigues, drama, struggle and controversy dogged the process from the beginning to the end. What worsen the matter was the high number of aspirants signifying interest in the exalted position. Many of them had started underground campaign before the release of guidlines by the party leadership. The political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Accord Party (AC), the Alliance For Democracy (AD), and the Action Democratic Party (ADP) had concluded their primary poll by last Monday July 23 as directed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The APC went for a direct primary on Friday July 20 after two earlier postponements. The PDP primary was ttended by over 3,000 delegates from 332 wards of the state on Saturday July 21. The SDP had two parallel primaries on Wednesday July 18 while the AC, AD and ADP had their own on Saturday July 21, Sunday July 22 and Monday July 23 respectively.

What was peculiar to these parties was outcry and allegation of manipulation of the process. But, political watchers said there was nothing wrong with this because such is the mood during the electioneering period. More so, that there are bound to be divergent views and positions on issues. To analysts, what is important is the capacity of using party machinery to reconcile aggrieved members and harmonise interests before going into the election scheduled to hold on September 22. It is believed that, going into election with divided house could spell doom for the parties, hence, the need for every loyal party member to negotiate and reach compromise.

    APC:

The APC leadership did not zone the governorship to any particular senatorial district, though there was a sustained clamor for zoning to  Osun West “because it is the only zone that only had a shot at the exalted position for less than two years in the history of the state.”  Persuasion, protest and media war were employed by the proponents and advocates of zoning, but they failed as the leadership held on to “tenets and principles of democracy” that allow equal participation from all sections of the state, more so that the party’s constitution makes no provision for zoning. Again, to political analysts, the best for the position could come from any part of the state in a fair, free and transparent process.

Another issue that really generated tension among aspirants and their supporters was the method to be adopted for the primary. In the wisdom of the party leadership, direct primary was adopted. But, this was met by stiff resistance by some members while others supported it. Those opposing direct primary alleged plans to manipulate the process. But those in support insisted that the method “is participatory, democratic, transparent and cheap, adding that it will “discourage the use of money to buy over few delegates.” A day before the primary, a meeting chaired by the senator representing Delta Central District, Ovie Omo-Agege, was held with the aspirants. This was designed to douse tension and make the aspirants pledge to work within the principles of the party. The aspirants were Benedict O Alabi, Babatunde Adedotun Taiwo, Lasun Yusuff Sulaiman, Oyetola Isiaq Gboyega, Adeyinka Ajayi, Adeoti Moshood, Peter Babalola, Saka Layonu, Oyemomi Ezekiel, Oriolowo Adelere, Amere Gafar, Najeem Salam, Mumini Rafiu, Alamu Bisi, Dayo Oyebamiji, Kunle Adegoke and Babajide Omoworare. But some of aspirants, including the Commissioner for Finance, Prince Bola Oyebamiji, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti former Chief of Staff to former  Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Elder Peter Babalola, Senator representing Osun East in the Senate, Babajide Omoworare, withdrew from the race before the commencement of the poll.

After the poll, the five-man panel headed by Zamfara State Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari announced the Chief of Staff to Osun State Governor, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, the winner and the candidate for the party. Oyetola won with 127,017 votes. Trailing him the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yusuff, with 21,975 votes. Also, the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,958 votes. Others are: Adelere Oriolowo, 5,373 votes; Saka-Layonu, 2,369 votes.

Following the announcement of the result, some aspirants, including Saka-Layonu, Benedict Alabi, Bola Oyebamiji and Ayoade Lawal, congratulated the winner and promised to support him. But,  Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, who alleged manipulation of the process, resigned his appointment as the Secretary to Osun State Government (SSG) and defected to the Action Democratic Party (APD) to become its governorship candidate. By affirmation, Adeoti scored 13,324 votes out of 13,367 party’s total votes. Some APC members are exercising the fear that Adeoti’s defection may affect the fortunes of the party at the  election. Also, it is believed that the former SSG is out to play a spoiler’s job, knowing that he could not make it as the candidate of the new party. Many even say that he is facing a “political waterloo” with his defection. They say he should learn from the former deputy governor, whom they maintained had failed to exercise patience but still unable to actualise his life long ambition despite changing political platform. For the APC to win the governorship election, analysts said, its candidate must be able to assure the people he would address workers and pensioners’ welfare, assuage the feeling that some zones would be left out of development, and surpass the present pace of development.

    PDP:

For the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the outcome of the primary has continued to generate tension among members alleging fraud in the process that produced Senator Ademola Adeleke as the candidate. The late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke’s younger brother, picked the PDP governorship ticket with 1,569 votes. He beat his closest rival, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, who scored 1,562 votes, with seven votes. Coming third was the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Fatai Akinbade with 56 votes. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Barr. Nathaniel Oke, scored 3 votes while 56 votes were voided. Before the commencement of the primary, seven governorship aspirants of the party, who withdrew from the race were former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Adejare Bello; a lawyer, Dr. Ayoade Adewopo; a university don, Prof. Adeolu Durotoye; former chairman, Irewole Local Government Area, Chief Lere Oyewumi; former chairman, Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Jide Adeniji; former Minister of Youths Development, Senator Olasunkanmi Akinlabi; and former Senator representing Osun Central, Chief Felix Ogunwale. The PDP chairman, Hon. Soji Adagunodo, had made it abundantly cleared to the aspirants as they came to the party secretariat to signify intention that there would be no zoning. The declaration encouraged contenders from all the three zones just like the APC. Initially, the figure stood at 23 before it was reduced to 11 from the party’s national secretariat.

But, since Adeleke was declared winner of the primary by the electoral panel led by Bayelsa State Governor Sierake Dickson, protests have trailed the results of the poll. Ogunbiyi alleged manipulation of the primary in favour if Adeleke. He rejected verdict of the panel. His supporters in continued protest insisted in reclaiming their mandate. With this development, the agenda of the party to kick out the ruling APC from government is under threat. The PDP, to political watchers are just starting out of serious crises, including factionalization and must not resume another round of crisis, if it wants to win the election in the state. Though the PDP candidate is from the Osun West, the zone that belies it must produce the next governor, there is an issue of mistrust between some section of the zone that believe that Ede zone could not always acquire all available positions all the time. In the last Osun West bye election for the Senate, Ede was said to have been lowed to get the slot with the agreement and understanding that it must not interfere or participate in the governorship poll but today this is not so and this may negatively affect fortune of the PDP with Adeleke coming from Ede.

    SDP:

This is another party that had been riddled with crisis lately, particularly with the defection of Senator Iyiola Omisore to the party from the PDP. The SDP through its state chairman, Chief Ademola Ishola, denounced membership of Omisore, describing him as a stranger to the party. Bun in a drastic turn, Ishola was later expelled while Omisore went ahead with a congress where his ally, Dr. Bayo Faforiji, became the party’s chairman.

At its parallel primary held by the Ishola faction, Mr. Munirudeen Kehinde Atanda emerged as the flag bearer of the party, polling 271 votes to defeat Otunba Yemisi Oladeji, and Senator Iyiola Omisore, who scored 13 and 8 votes respectively. Also, the Faforiji group held its own primary and gave the party governorship ticket to Omiosre and gave the second position to Atanda. With the “hide and seek” game going on in the SDP people don’t expect much from the party at the poll. No significant votes, apart from Ife axis of the Osun East senatorial district, are the only prospects for Omisore. The in-fighting within the SDP allegedly orchestrated by his ambition will, no doubt, affect him adversely at the poll.

    AD and AC:

These are two parties could only have relevance only when they work in alliance with the big players. For the AD, its governorship candidate, Olugbenga Akintola, got the ticket through an affirmative process. But a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Olapade Julius Okunola, picked the governorship ticket of the Accord Party with 141 votes. He defeated Mr. Babatunde Loye and Pastor Bunmi Ibiloye, who polled 58 votes and 12 votes respectively. There was no crisis before and during the process for the party, proving to be a party to look up to in future elections, only if it could mobilise support from more people.

    ADP:

The platform came into reckoning with the endorsement and adoption of former SSG, who defected from the ruling APC. It is believed that the party candidate is enjoying sponsorship from those, who want to take their own pound of flesh from the Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola believed to have rock their boats at critical election times in their own states. The party’s  purpose may not be more than that and will end with the election, no more no less, so many believed.

For the two big parties, the APC and the PDP, working in alliance with parties with reasonable vote prospects could improve their performances in the September 22 governorship poll. They both must continue to mend fences and bring back aggrieved members. Also, where the two parties’ candidates pick their deputy could increase their mileage at poll. For the two, it could in a reverse form. While the APC will be wise to pick its deputy from the Osun West to pacify the zone and get their bloc votes, the PDP may go to Osun Central for its deputy and get their votes too.
