  • Oyetola cautions Okada riders against crimes

Osun State Governor Adegbyega Oyetola has admonished commercial motorcyclists against engaging in criminal activities.

He urged them to ensure that criminals are prevented from infiltrating their ranks, adding that his administration would take care of their interest.

The governor spoke after hundreds of motorcyclists, who were joined by tricycle riders, led the governor on the major roads of state capital, Osogbo, to his office.

They pledged their support for the governor and his administration, the event was aimed at showing solidarity following his victory at the Supreme Court.

The riders joined the governor from Osogbo Machine Tool Area through Stadium to Olaiya Junction and Ogo Oluwa before terminating it at Abere, the state secretariat, where the governor addressed them.

As the long convoy snaked through the major streets, residents came out of their homes and offices to cheer Oyetola, who waved from the open space on the roof of his vehicle.

The motorcyclists, under the umbrella of the amalgamated body of the Osun State Commercial Okada Riders of Nigeria (OSCORUN), urged the governor to empower them in return for their support for the state government.

Chairman of OSCORUN Alhaji Ismail Tiamiyu applauded the governor for being resolute throughout the period of litigation.

He said the rally was organised to identify with the governor and further demonstrate their loyalty and commitment to his administration.

The OSCORUN Chairman pledged that the association would continue to contribute their quota to ensuring the success of the government.

“We came out today to show to the world our unflinching support for the administration of Governor Oyetola and the All Progressives Congress (APC) – led government.

“Our coming out today is significant and symbolic because it is aimed to demonstrate our collective loyalty, commitment and dedication to the government.

“We will continue to support the state in our own little way to be part of the success story of this government,” he added.

Oyetola hailed the motorcyclists for the honour done to him and the state.

He said his administration remained committed to support all citizens through the prioritization of their welfare and wellbeing.

Oyetola implored the motorcyclists to always abide by the rules and regulations and to do away with unscrupulous individuals among them who are fond of aiding kidnappers and ritualists.

  • Hospital ‘detains’ indigent patients over unpaid bills

No fewer than 10 patients of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife (OAUTH) in Osun State have allegedly been detained for their inability to pay their medical bills. While about five of them, all women, have been released after paying their bills by instalment, another five are alleged to be currently languishing at the gate of the Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, an annex of the OAUTH, where they are being allegedly detained.

The women, who had undergone Caesarean Section before they were delivered of their babies and surgical operations for miscarriage, had not, it was alleged, been allowed to leave the hospital for over one month for owing the hospital between N42,000 and N57, 000.

The patients, who spoke with our correspondent at the Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, said they were unable to pay the hospital bills because their spouses are indigent.

Sidikat Musa (26) with the card number 271691 is a hairdresser while her husband is a drycleaner.

According to the patient, her husband had managed to pay N55, 000 out of N97, 000 which the hospital charged them for delivering her of her baby through a Cesarean Section,  leaving the balance of N42,000 to be paid by her husband before she could be allowed to go home and join her family.

Unlike the four others our correspondent spoke with, Sidikat was lucky to have a baby boy after the operation. Another patient Anifat Tajudeen (29), with card number 271833 is a tailor and her husband is a farmer. She said she had been discharged since June 6 but said the management of the hospital refused to allow her go home because she could not pay the balance of N43, 000 of her medical bill, adding that the hospital management had been kind enough to write off 50 per cent of the cost of the treatment for Caesarean Section. Anifat, unfortunately, lost her child. A tailoring apprentice, Barakat Awolaju (19) with card number 416129, said she had been detained by the hospital since May 18  after her boyfriend, a welder, ran away because he was unable to pay N57,000 which was the balance of her medical bill of N114, 000 despite the hospital writing of N57, 000 because of complications occasioned by miscarriage.

Also, a 20-year-old hairdresser apprentice, Rachael Ayoku with card number 271324 underwent surgical operation for miscarriage but could not go home since she was discharged on May 12. Rachael’s boyfriend, who is a tiler, has been unable to pay the balance of N43, 000 out of the N86,000 medical bill which the hospital had subsidised by 50 per cent.

A tailor apprentice, Blessing Ogundipe (24), whose boyfriend is unemployed also could not offset the balance of N46, 000 out of N112, 000 after the hospital had subsidised the cost by 50 per cent. According to her, she had been detained since she was discharged on June 21.

Reacting, the Public Relations Officer for the OAUTH, Kemi Fasoto, said only the Chief Medical Director could make comment on any issue concerning the hospital.

  • Oyetola promises to clear workers’ salary arrears

OSUN State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has promised to clear salary arrears of civil servants.

He also promised to keep paying their salaries in full.

The governor made the promise at an event organised by the civil servants to celebrate his Friday’s victory at the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed him as the winner of the September 22, 2018, state governorship election.

The apex court’s decision ended the almost eight months’ litigation over the election and sealed the hope of the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Ademola Adeleke.

He said: “I will not only sustain the payment of your full salary but by the grace of God, I’ll pay your arrears. I will prioritise your welfare. But as workers, you must believe in the administration, be dedicated, and give your full support, show understanding and commitment to duty.”

Oyetola, who advised the workers to be partners in progress, challenged them to be efficient and productive “because you are the drivers of our promise to deliver democracy dividends to the people. I have no reason not to hit the ground running, we will deliver on our promises.”

Reflecting on the period of litigation, Oyetola, who took the mantle on November, 27, 2018, said: “The journey was tough and full of distractions. It was a difficult period for planning. Anytime you made a move to plan, you remember that it is only if all things are equal. You did not know how long you could plan.”

Oyetola said he, however, refused to allow his spirit to be dampened by reminding himself that tribulation was part of life and that “even Jesus Christ faced tribulation”.

“He was crucified, so who are we?  Our state is bound to go through difficult time, but the important thing is that we have triumphed.

“Now the battle is over. I call on everybody, including the opponents to support us to move the state forward because I believe in participatory government.”

He hailed the civil servants for not joining a group of pensioners, who protested last month over their yet-to-be paid arrears of wages, claiming that the state government had received a tranche of Paris Club refund.

“It is not true that our government has received a Paris Club refund. We cannot deceive our people,” Oyetola said.

Prayers were held for the success of the administration.

Also at the event were his deputy, Mr. Benedict Alabi; Secretary to the State Government Prince Wole Oyebamiji; Head of Service Dr. Oyebade Olowogboyega, who organised the event, a National Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) Senator Mudashir Hussein, State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Prince Gboyega Famodun, permanent secretaries, heads of government agencies and other senior government and public servants.

The governor was heralded into his office by the welcoming public servants, who gathered at the entrance to the state secretariat at Abere, Osogbo, singing his praises amid drumming and dancing.

It was his first day at work after the apex court’s verdict that dismissed the appeal filed by Adeleke.

“The state government had released the circular for the commencement of deduction of premium of 1.5 per cent of basic salary of public servants and also three per cent contribution of government to public servants premium which is to be prepared with their salaries.”

He noted that the essence of the deduction was to ensure that residents have equitable access to healthcare services and also adequate distribution of health facilities within the state.

  • Supreme Court verdict: Rep urges Osun PDP to be steadfast

The House of Representatives member representing (Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency of Osun State, Oluwole Oke, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the state to remain steadfast and prepare for future elections.

Oke was reacting to the Supreme Court ruling on the state’s governorship election, which upheld the victory of All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola.

The lawmaker congratulated Oyetola and urged the governor to bring his wealth of experience as a financial engineer to bear on governance.

He added: “He should see every citizen of Osun as his. I urge every citizen to support him to succeed, while remaining vigilant as well.”

Oke spoke at the weekend in Abuja, the nation’s capital, following the verdict of the apex court.

The lawmaker emphasized that though the decision of the highest court in the land came against PDP hopes, desires and expectations, its members should be consoled and remain committed to the tenets and values of the party.

He said: “The lessons here is for us as lawmakers to go back to the drawing board, think through our laws, constitution and the Electoral Act to avoid a situation where both the electoral body or the courts will usurp the duty or functions of lawmakers.”

Oke thanked the party’s leader and businessman, Dr. Deji Adeleke, for his moral, financial and spiritual support since his younger brother, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

The lawmaker lauded the efforts of Senator Adeleke for his sacrifices, adding that he went through a lot.

He said: “My thanks and appreciation to our party leaders, particularly our chairman, for his doggedness and hard work and our teeming party members and supporters for their belief in us.

The lawmaker noted that Governor Oyetola will remain in power in the next three and a half years pursuant to the Supreme Court ruling.

“I, therefore, wish to urge our members to remain vigilant and watchful and ensure delivery of democratic dividends to our people,” he said.

According to him, the resources accruing from the Federation Account to the state, the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and from grants belong to the people.

Oke said the governor must prudently and efficiently manage the state’s resource for the benefit of the all and sundry.

  • Presidency tackles Atiku over comments on judgement

The Presidency on Friday tackled former Vice President and presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over his comments on the Supreme Court judgement affirming the election of Mr Gboyega Oyetola as governor of Osun State.

Commenting on the judgement, Atiku, in a statement, had said: “I urge the nation’s judiciary to take a pulse of the nation and reflect it.

“In their hands, God has placed a great responsibility. The duty to ensure that justice is done, irrespective of the pressure to do otherwise by the powers that be.”

But the Presidency, in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that it found Atiku’s reaction very ridiculous, and comical.

The statement reads: “Many things fly in the face of logic, reason, and legality in this portion of the statement.

“Alhaji Abubakar urged the judiciary to reflect the pulse of the nation in their judgments.

“Learned people know that the judiciary comes to conclusions drawing from matters of law placed before it, and not sentiments, or so-called “pulse of the nation.”

“A pertinent question is: how does the judiciary gauge the pulse of the nation? Is it even positioned to do such? Is the judiciary established for that purpose, or to dispense justice, even if the heavens fall?

“Again, there is insinuation of inducement in the statement when the PDP candidate said the judiciary should ensure justice is done, ‘irrespective of the pressure to do otherwise by the powers that be.’

“We see this as an attempt to browbeat the judiciary, thus causing it to entertain sentiment in the ongoing petition on the presidential election before the tribunal.

“If anybody has the tendency or proclivity to put pressure on the judiciary, Nigerians knows where the finger points, and it is definitely not at President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This was a man who had thrice taken his electoral challenges to the judiciary, up to the Supreme Court, and not once was he accused of trying to influence the process, or put pressure on the courts.

“When the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost Zamfara and Rivers states, arising from judicial proclamations then, there was no “pressure to do otherwise, by the powers that be.

“But now that the victory of the party in Osun was upheld, there is insinuation of pressure from those who have never learnt to play straight.”

According to him, President Buhari has always been committed to fair play, which he noted was clearly evident in the last general elections.

Buhari, he said, remains committed to even-handedness and justice always.

Akeredolu described the Supreme Court judgement as an affirmation of the decision made by the people of Osun State when they filed out in their hundreds of thousands to freely give their votes to Oyetola as their governor in November, 2018.

The governor noted that the judgment has finally laid to rest the legal battle which arose from the governorship poll.

He expressed hope that with the judgment, Governor Oyetola can now fully concentrate on the implementation of his administration’s policies towards the development of Osun State.

He described the judgment as a victory for the people of Osun State and democracy.

“Hearty congratulations to my brother governor, Oyetola. A bigger congratulations to the people of Osun State, who are the real winners in the context.”

Congratulating Oyetola in a statement signed by his media aide, Habib Aruna, former Governor Ambode of Lagos State said it was a well-deserved victory and an affirmation of the mandate given to the victorious governor by the people of Osun State on September 22, 2018.

“I congratulate my brother, Governor Gboyega Oyetola on this resounding victory at the apex court. It is not only a victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) but also an attestation to the fact that the judiciary remains the last hope for the common man.

“With this victory, I strongly believe that it would enable the governor to focus on delivering on his campaign promises and implementing policies that would make life more comfortable for the people of Osun State,” Ambode said.

    Southwest APC calls for celebration

The leadership of APC in the South West on Friday congratulated Governor Oyetola on his victory at the apex court, noting that the feat called for great celebration.

In a release signed by the Zonal Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Karounwi Oladapo, the party said Oyetola will certainly accelerate the pace of development in Osun now that there would be no unnecessary distraction any longer.

“The party felicitates with the people of Osun for the victory and thanks them for keeping faith with the  APC  and  Oyetola  during  the litigation period. We seek for more support for the governor now that all the doubts over his legitimacy have been cleared.

“The Southwest APC guarantees that the governor will tackle the welfare of the people and address the security challenges in a measurable and more impactful manner,” Karounwi said in the release.

The APC Zonal Publicity Secretary also urged the PDP candidate and challenger, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to accept the judgment in good faith and cooperate with the governor in the task of making the state the envy of all.

Oyetola’s victory symbolic, says Ondo APC

The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Ade Adetimehin, Friday noted the Supreme Court verdict on the governorship election in Osun State as a vindication of the party’s sincerity.

Adetimehin in a statement signed by the party’s spokesman, Alex Kalejaye, commended the courage of the judiciary, particularly that of the Justices of the highest court in the land for dispensing justice without sentiments.

“The judiciary has once again made us proud. The Supreme Court justices have convinced all observers that they cannot be intimidated or bribed,” he said.

With the judgment, he argued, the elected governor could now settle down to attend to the development and welfare needs of the good people of the state.

He also advised political parties to see elections as contest to serve, and not a do-or-die affair.

Senator Fasanmi said: “It is my joy to witness Oyetola’s victory at the Supreme Court.

This really shows that Osun people’s votes were counted.

“This victory will enable Oyetola to concentrate on the good governance he has started since the beginning of his administration.”

Senator Fasanmi urge Governor Oyetola to keep the flag of progressives flying in the state.

He assured the people of Osun that under the administration of Oyetola, the dawn of a new and progressive era has begun in Osun State.

    Omoworare hails judiciary, congratulates Oyetola

Osun State senator, Babajide Omoworare, on Friday applauded Supreme Court judges for the verdict on Osun State governorship election dispute, describing the judgement as conscientious and fair.

In his congratulatory message to Governor Gboyega Oyetola, which was made available to the media by his media assistant, Tunde Dairo, the senator thanked the people of the state for standing by the government and APC while the judicial process lasted.

He said: “Mr Governor, I am congratulating you  and t he good people of the State of Osun for this well-deserved and long-won victory at the poll.

“It is rather unfortunate that the victory was delayed due to oppositions’ antics of power through the back door.

“May I equally explore this medium to appreciate the people of Osun for believing in the Oyetola-led APC government in the state and standing resolute in embracing good governance and democracy. You spoke with your votes, you backed it up with your prayers and support. I say a big thank you.”

Also commending the judgment in a statement yesterday, the Coalition of Oodua Self-determination Group (COSEG) congratulated Governor Oyetola as well as his immediate predecessor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for acting as true democrats in displaying uncommon patience and resilience during the court processes.

The coalition said the duo were vindicated that the election of September 22, 2018 was peacefully conducted and followed dues process as affirmed by the highest court in the land.

Signed by the chairman of its coordinating council, Comrade Dayo Ogunlana, the statement described the judgment that nullified the appeal of the PDP candidate in the election as the triumph of truth over falsehood. COSEG also hailed the justices of the Supreme Court for doing a thorough job and affirming the victory of Alhaji Oyetola, saying it is an indication that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man.

It’s victory well deserved – Osinowo

Following Supreme Court judgment that upheld the victory of the APC governorship candidate in the last governorship election in Osun State, the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Bayo Osinowo, has congratulated the executive governor of Osun Sate, Gboyega Oyetola, saying his victory is a well-deserved one.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Prince Oladega Ibrahim, Senator Osinowo also congratulated the people of the Osun State and members of APC in the state for standing firmly with the party while the legal battle lasted.

In the same vein, Osinowo congratulated the judiciary for living up to expectations as the bedrock of the society and the last hope of the masses even as it served victory to the deserving party. He added that the judgment of the Supreme will further boost the trust of the people in the judiciary system.

Giving kudos to the leadership of APC for fielding a credible candidate like Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Osinowo likened the action to what is obtainable in Lagos State where the fact that party has always gotten it right with its candidate is the reason why the state has not derailed as far as developmental programmes are concerned, as every in-coming administration has built on the foundation laid since 1999 towards achieving a mega Lagos.

He said he was sure that Osun State would attain the next level as Oyetola will build on the legacy of his predecessor with whom he worked closely as the Chief of Staff

    • Adeleke: my ambition was never a do or die affair

The streets of Osogbo and other communities in Osun State erupted in excitement on Friday as the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Gboyega Oyetola as the governor of the state.

The apex court’s endorsement of Oyetola’s mandate followed its dismissal of the four appeals filed by Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election.

The appeals by Adeleke and his party were against the May 9, 2019 judgments of the Court of Appeal, Abuja which voided the majority judgment of the election tribunal and affirmed the election of Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Osun State.

The four appeals were marked: SC/553/2019; SC/554/2019; SC/555/2019 and SC/556/2019.

The Supreme Court, in a majority decision of five-to-two, read by Justice Olabode Rodes-Vivour, held that the majority judgment given by the election tribunal in favour of Adeleke and the PDP was a nullity.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour held that the tribunal was not properly constituted when it gave its decision in view of the non-participation of one of the tribunal members in one of the sittings where trial was conducted and vital documents admitted in evidence.

The judge, in the lead majority judgment, agreed with lawyer to Oyetola, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) that the failure of a member of the election tribunal, Justice Peter Obiora, to sit on February 6, 2019 rendered the entire proceedings and the judgment given by the tribunal a nullity.

The judgment by Rhodes-Vivour was on the appeal marked SC/553/2019, which was directed at the Court of Appeal’s judgment in the appeal filed by Oyetola against the majority decision of the election tribunal.

The court noted that Justice Obiora was absent on February 6, 2019 when the respondents’ witnesses (RWs) 12 and 13 – Ayoola Soji and Oladejo Kazeem – testified and tendered exhibits, which the tribunal admitted in evidence.

The apex court held that having not attended the tribunal’s siting on February 6, 2019, Justice Obiora did not see the two witnesses and was unable to examine their demeanour, as required, and therefore, it was wrong for the judge to have authored a judgment in which he reviewed the evidence given by the witnesses.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour added: “As rightly pointed out by the learned senior counsel for the first respondent, Chief Wole Olenipekun (SAN), learned counsel for the appellant, O. Ikpeazu (SAN) also held the view that Obiora J did not sit on the 6th of February 2019.

“At no time did Ikpeazu dispute the proceedings of the 6th of February2019. It was observed that at the election tribunal, Obiora J signed the record of proceedings at the end of every proceeding, except on the 6th of February 2019 when he did not sign at the end of the proceedings.”

Justice Rhodes-Vivour said after examining the submissions of counsel and the record of appeal, “I hold the position that Obiora J did not sit on the said day.

“What then is the implication of that on the proceedings conducted and the judgment delivered by the tribunal?

“The Supreme Court has always set aside the judgments of the trial courts where the panels have been irregular and inconsistent.

“An examination of the record of appeal reveals that well over 90 persons gave evidence, and at the end of each day’s proceedings, three judges, who included Obiora J, signed. It was only the proceedings of the 6th of February 2009 that was not signed by Obiora J.

“That was the day when the testimonies of RW12 and RW13 were taken. They were cross examined and vital documents admitted in evidence, which counsel agreed, at the Court of Appeal, that Obiora J did not sit on the 6th of February 2019 and so, he could not have signed the proceedings of that day.

“The failure of Oboira J to sit on the 6th of February 2019 renders the proceedings of that day worthless and the entire judgment a nullity.

“The correct order to make in this circumstance is to declare the entire judgment of the tribunal a nullity as a result of the fact that one of the members of the panel did not sit on a day proceedings were held.

“The learned counsel to the appellants ought to have advised his clients that the failure of Obiora J to sit on the 6th of February, 2019, but prepared the majority judgment, is a fundamental flaw.

“The tribunal was not properly constituted as regard the number of its members on the 6th of February 2019.

“The absence of Obiora J from the proceedings of the 6th of February 2019 affected the competence of the tribunal to deliver the judgement in any form.”

Justice Rhodes-Vivour proceeded to set aside the entire proceedings of the tribunal and its judgement delivered in favour of Adeleke and the PDP.

He upheld the majority judgement of the Court of Appeal, which earlier voided the tribunal’s judgement and affirmed the victory of Governor Oyetola.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour added: “I affirm the majority judgment of the Court of Appeal.

“The majority judgment of the tribunal is a nullity.

    “The preliminary objection is overruled.

    “The appeal is dismissed.”

The judge also dismissed two other similar appeals filed by Adeleke, marked: SC/554/2019 and SC/555/2019.

Both appeals were against the Court of Appeal judgments in the appeals by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC against the majority judgment of the tribunal.

Justices Ibrahim Muhammad (Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria), Kudirat Kekerere-Ekun, Amiru Sanusi and Uwani Abba-Aji agreed with the lead majority judgment as delivered by Justice Rhodes-Vivour.

Justice Abba-Aji read the lead majority judgment in the second appeal marked: SC/556/2019, which challenged the legality of the supplementary election conducted in Osun after INEC declared the first election inconclusive.

Justice Abba-Aji said in view of the court’s position in the earlier judgment, to the effect that the majority judgment of the tribunal was a nullity, it was unnecessary to consider other issues raised in the appeal.

Justices Kumai Akaahs and Paul Galumje gave the dissenting judgments in both cases in which they allowed the two appeals.

In his contribution, Akaahs said: “I wish to say that INEC is supposed to be an umpire and not an interested party.

“In this particular case, INEC used its manual to cancel an election in some polling units and declared the election inconclusive when the appellant had scored the highest number of votes and got the required spread of two-thirds of the votes in the 25 per cent of the Local Government Areas.

“‎They ought to have declared the appellant the winner, but INEC had something up its sleeves and it was able to achieve that by the rerun, whereby the 2nd respondent (Oyetola) had ‎400 plus votes as against the 1st appellant (Adeleke), who had 300 plus.

“Whereas in the election of September 22, 2018, after the illegal cancellation of some results, the 1st appellant had scored the majority votes of 300,000 plus votes‎.

“INEC has always used the rerun election to do what it likes. This should not continue.

“On that basis, I hold that the 1st appellant, having scored the highest number of lawful votes and had the spread, he ought to be declared the winner, and I so declare.”

    Jubilation in Osogbo, other communities

Residents of Osun State on Friday trooped out in solidarity with the State governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, following the Supreme Court judgement which affirmed him as the winner of the September 22, 2018 governorship election.

Residents of the state went into wild jubilation, moving in groups from one location to another and singing victory songs.

The popular Olaiya junction and Nelson Mandela Freedom Park were among the places where residents converged to sing and dance to Oyetola’s victory.

Addressing his supporters at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Oyetola said since the matters of the last governorship election had been laid to rest by the courts, all stakeholders should come together to move the state forward.

Oyetola said: “It is time to move forward. I extend hands of friendship to the opposition. We are all Omoluabi. I will focus on security, peoples’ welfare, especially women.”

My ambition was never a do or die affair, says Adeleke

The PDP candidate in the election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on Friday congratulated Governor Oyetola on his victory at the Supreme Court.

Adeleke, in a statement issued by his media aide, Olawale Rasheed, said his ambition to become the governor of Osun State was never a do or die affair.

Adeleke said the judgement of the Supreme Court, being the apex court in the land, “regardless of my disagreement and disappointment, remains final.”

He said: “As a democrat and law abiding citizen, I accept the ruling no matter my misgiving. I wish Governor Oyetola well in the governance of Osun state.”

He expressed gratitude to his teeming supporters, leaders and members of the PDP for their “massive support throughout the duration of the case,” lauding “our high spirit and commitment to the cause of democracy, which we championed from last year till date.”

He continued: “In all circumstances, we must thank God Almighty. We gallantly fought a good fight in pursuit of a democratic cause. The ideals we fought for live on.

“Our ambition was never a do or die affair. We aspired to serve and deliver democratic dividends to the people of Osun State.

“Our ambition was altruistic. We wish Governor Oyetola the best in governance of the state.”

PDP shocked at judgment, calls for calm, unity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday expressed shock at the judgement of the Supreme Court which affirmed Mr Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Osun State.

In a statement issued by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said the fact that the Supreme Court had a split judgment also spoke volumes on its verdict in this matter.

The statement said: “Our study of the judgment however shows that the Supreme Court did not negate the position of the PDP and millions of Nigerians that our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, won the election, but based its verdict on reservations over issues of technicalities arising at the election petition tribunal.

“Nevertheless, our party stands with overwhelming majority of Nigerians on that undeniable fact that the people of Osun State, by the votes cast at the poll, preferred Senator Adeleke as their governor.

“The PDP, as a law-abiding party, however, urges the people of Osun State to remain united, calm and not lose hope in our democratic process and the quest for a government that truly represents their wishes and aspirations.”

  • Osun set to disburse N615m soft loans to small businesses

Osun State Government is set to begin the disbursement of over N615 million to micro and small businesses, General Manager of Osun Micro-credit Agency, Mr. Dayo Babaranti said at the weekend.

Babaranti added that the state had so far given out about N4.8 billion to about 28,000 residents to support their businesses.

He said the N615.150 million received from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is a part payment from the N2 billion revolving Micro Small Medium Enterprise Development Fund (MSMEDF) loan being given to states by the apex bank.

Babaranti, who spoke in his office in Osogbo, the state capital, added that since 2014, the Federal Government, through the CBN, had been releasing intervention funds (MSMEDF) to support socio-economic activities in states.

The General Manager said the N4.8 billion received through the CBN microcredit scheme was disbursed to citizens as soft loans to support small businesses.

According to him, Osun was rated first among the 36 benefiting states of the CBN’s MSMEDF because of its promptness and diligence in repayment and for using the funds for the primary purpose it was meant.

Speaking on the terms and conditions for accessing the loan, Babaranti said the agency had maintained simple and bearable requirements for the citizens, adding that the scheme had helped to rekindle the hope among the citizens who were unable to meet the condition to obtain loans from commercial banks.

He said: “This scheme has been really helpful in boosting socio-economic activities in the state as thousands of people have benefited from it. Our state has received N4.8 billion since the intervention of the CBN on MSMEDF began in 2014, and so far so good, over 28,000 people have benefited from this scheme.

“We have recorded over 70 per cent repayment by beneficiaries. We divide our lending scheme into three categories to accommodate all sectors and these include: individual lending, group lending and SME lending. The maximum amount individual lenders can benefit from this agency isN500,000 and this must be paid back within one year.

“We are empowered to give from zero to N5 million to those who are operating Small and Medium Enterprise, while those under the umbrella of co-operative or group can access limitless funds depending on the strength of their membership.”

“This scheme has helped our people to expand the scope of their businesses, reduce unemployment, eradicate poverty, banish hunger and create a sense of belonging for all. It has helped to improve on the capital of the participating microfinance banks, which has translated into increased sales volume.

“We have made significant improvement on the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state through tax payments from the income earned by the beneficiaries. Through this scheme, the nine per cent interest of the facility has forced all microfinance banks in the state to review downwards their hitherto high-interest rates.”

  • Osun has bright future under Oyetola – APC

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has assured the people of the state of bright future under the leadership of Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

The APC said the people of the state have good reason to exercise hope and trust in the ability of Governor Oyetola to put the Osun on a high socio-economic and political pedestal, assuring that with the governor, Osun is in safe hands.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi, the party said: “In less than a year of being mandated by the people of the state to succeed Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the governor has continued to put Osun on the progressive lane of development that distinguishes it from many states in the country.”

“Recently, the World Bank gave a clean bill of health to the state of Osun and 20 others for their transparent and accountable management of their states’ finances.

“As a result, the World Bank is now packaging development grants for all the states cleared by the Bank. Imagine a probable evil event of PDP winning the last governorship election and the APC’s accountable and transparent management of the state finances had been discontinued as the PDP had promised before and during the campaigns, Osun would have been tragically removed from that list by the World Bank.

    “But that this tragedy didn’t happen is one of the glorious outcomes of APC victory in last November’s election. It secured continuity and guaranteed international assistance”, the APC said, adding that;

“It would have been a tragedy of monumental proportion if the contrary had happened”  according to a statement from the directorate of publicity signed by its publicity director, Barr Kunle Oyatomi and circulated to the media in Osogbo today.”

Acknowledging the Oyetola-led APC government’s consolidation on the  healthcare delivery in the last six months which has brought the health services to all the electoral wards in the state, the APC said:

“This is what you get from the government that is determined to continue with the good work of the past administration as opposed to a reckless People’s Democratic Party’s alternative ready to dismantle all the marvelous achievements of the APC under the exceptional leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. Only a satanic twist of event would turn such progressive table around.”
