    • Stay calm, Ahiwe tells PDP supporters

A three-man panel of Appeal Court judges sitting in Lagos, Lagos State, yesterday upheld the decision of the Abia Election Petition Tribunal which had affirmed the governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti as the winner of the March 18, 2023 Abia governorship election following his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeals brought before it by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their governorship candidates against the election of Governor Otti .

In a unanimous decision, the three-man Appeal Court panel upheld the victory of Otti at the polls, saying that it conformed with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The appellate court ruled that petitions brought by the appellants lacked merit, as they were like “a comedy skit brought to a democratic setting.”

The court said issues of political party membership is a pre-election matter, which also falls within the jurisdiction of the political party.

It further said that since Otti joined the Labour Party, won its primary election and submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he was qualified to contest.

On the issues of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, brought by the PDP and its candidate, the Appeal Court said the appellants failed to demonstrate or link their documentary evidence to the specific parts of the case.

The judgement has sparked wild celebration among the supporters of Otti in some parts of the state.

In his reaction, the Abia State PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Chief Okey Ahiwe, urged both his supporters and members of the PDP in the state not to panic, while expressing deep gratitude to God, his numerous supporters across political party lines, his dynamic legal team, family, friends, and well-wishers.

Meanwhile, Otti has revealed that the state government was engaging with leaderships and stakeholders of various worker’s unions in the state to fashion out ways on how to improve on the minimum wage of the state workers to align with the present economic realities.

The governor disclosed this during the 3rd edition of his monthly media chat held in Government House, Umuahia, the state capital.

According to him, the reason for adjusting the pay of the workers is because of the economic realities of the nation.

“We do understand that things are a bit more difficult for the people. We are engaging with stakeholders to see how we can improve on the pay of civil servants in line with the present economic realities; where exchange rates have converged upwards and fuel subsidy has been removed and inflation is heading to 30%.

“We are already working to see how we can improve on not just the minimum wage but also across the line and announcement to that effect will be made in due course”

Governor Otti clarified that the recently retired Permanent Secretaries and Directors would receive arrears of salaries and their gratuities due to them.

He also reassured of his commitment to defray pension  arrears as earlier promised.

The governor explained that he is not living in the Government House because his predecessor commissioned an uncompleted building while the old Government House was left in a dilapidated nature.

He stated  that for the new Government House, “My predecessor commissioned an uncompleted building.

“That’s a deceit of the highest order. He didn’t need to commission it.

“The question to ask is , construction started with the administration of T.A Orji, why didn’t they complete it and move into it?

“But he waited until the twilight of his administration. When we went to inspect it, we found out that he did a fantastic job on the ground floor. It was finished well but of course it had no bedrooms.

“Bedrooms were on the upper floors. The upper floors were not touched. In fact, the second floor was not even plastered, so why commission?

“So I looked at it and found that it was not ready for occupation. The whole environment was also not ready to receive a governor.

“The office block has been abandoned for several years. So that place was not a place anybody could live”

Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti has appointed Mrs. Ngozi Queen Obioma as the new Head of Civil Service (HoS) in the state.

The appointment of Mrs. Obioma was coming six months after Joy Maduka was appointed acting Head of Civil Service.

Our correspondent reports that the HoS was among the successful candidates that sat for a recent test and screening conducted by the state government for prospective Permanent Secretaries in the state.

The Nation had reported that the state government came under heavy criticism by major opposition parties in the state, for appointing Maduka acting Head of Service over her seniors in the civil service.

The media camps of the Labour Party (LP)-led government of Dr. Alex Otti and his predecessor, former governor Okezie Ikpeazu, have engaged in war of words, as the incumbent administration raises a fresh N500m allegation against Dr. Ikpeazu.

While the government is alleging that former governor Ikpeazu didn’t build any new Government House as his media team are claiming on the internet, Ikpeazu’s media team have come out to debunk the statement from Otti’s media team.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Senior Special Adviser to Otti on Media, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the money, which was mapped out to be used in the renovation of the Abia State Government House, was allegedly diverted by Ikpeazu to build his house at Umuobiakwa, his country home in Obingwa Local Government.

Ekeoma, who said the government had already initiated moves to ensure that the former governor accounted for or returned the money to the state coffers, debunked that the former governor built a new Government House.

The state government recently came across a document, which showed that former governor Ikpeazu diverted a whopping Five Hundred Million Naira meant for the renovation of Abia State Government House and used same to build a house for himself at his Umuobiakwa country home in Obingwa Local Government.

“The government decided to take the necessary action to ensure that the former governor returns the money without unnecessary drama. Interestingly, the former governor got hint of the arrangement and decided to send his attack dogs led by his former commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, to carry out another laughable and thoughtless media onslaught, accusing Governor Otti of refusing to move into the so-called “New Government House” that does not exist and other outright mendacious fabrications.

Responding, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Ikpeazu, Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka, said: “The Presidential Lodge is still intact, yet Otti abandoned it and chose to operate from his personal house.

“Apart from the new Presidential Lodge, there is also the old Presidential Lodge, which was fully renovated and refurbished by Ikpeazu.

“It’s on the road to Ojukwu Bunker with the official residences of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9 Umuahia and the Commissioner of Police surrounding it. Why didn’t he move in there?

“Six months after taking office, you people cannot buy ordinary bed and foam plus chairs and tables to furnish a completed house? Yet you have spent N5.4 billion to run the office of the governor in three months inside Otti’s personal house?

“You have spent close to N900 million on food and refreshments inside Otti’s house?

“You have spent N540million on media and propaganda in three months? Yet you can’t buy ordinary bed and foam?

“If Otti was serious about helping the state, he would have committed funds to do whatever was needed to bring the Government House to his taste.”

Abia State Governor Alex Otti yesterday inaugurated the newly appointed transition committee chairmen (mayors) for the 17 local governments.

He urged them to grow the local government economy by making the communities conducive for production and rapid growth.

Speaking in Umuahia at the event titled: “Expanding the frontiers of development”, the governor said: “Your primary task as mayors and deputies shall be to make the local communities and towns conducive for active production and rapid growth.

“We expect you to quickly develop holistic framework for improving agriculture and light scale production in ways that enhance outputs and attract domestic and foreign investors.”

He said their appointment was a call to serve and not to be served.

“We do not expect you to get everything right on the first day, but you must be willing to learn, keeping your mind open to new ideas and possibilities.”

On his reason for appointing such class of people as mayors, Otti said: “We need the best hands and heads to drive the development of the state.”

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, said the governor desired to bring together the individuals as mayors and heads of the councils because he had great plans for the local governments, which included ensuring accelerated development at the grassroots.

The mayors thanked the governor for appointing them and pledged their commitment to serve.

Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt highway ready next month, says Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has assured the citizens that the Aba axis of Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway, which has been in a deplorable condition over the years, will be ready for use next month.

The Nation had reported that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during a working visit to the state, sympathised with road users on the anguish they suffered on the road and assured them that the other remaining part of the road project would be completed with a cement pavement technology, to ensure longevity of the road.

Our correspondent reports that due to the deplorable nature of the road in recent time, commuters and visitors who spend over three hours coming from Port Harcourt to Aba, now use Etche route to access the commercial town for a journey that would have taken less than an hour through the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway.

It was gathered that commercial motorcycle operators were enjoying brisk patronage.

Governor Otti, addressing residents yesterday after an inspection of the Obehe axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, conveyed the Works minister’s assurances that there was a presidential directive to make the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway accessible to motorists before the Yuletide

He said: “The reason I am here today is to see the progress of work that has been done by the CCECC.

“Last week, I was with the Minister of Works, and he assured me that they have the instruction of the President to ensure that this road is available to us,  motorists, on or before the Yuletide  and I have come to see things for myself.

“Abia State Government is collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure that that this road, which has been underutilised for a very long time, is completed as quickly as possible.”

The governor, who also addressed enthusiastic Aba residents and those doing business along Asa Nnentu Spare Parts Market, Alaoji in Ugwunagbo Local Government, assured them that the road would be ready for use this Yuletide.

Abia State government says it has uncovered plot by some disgruntled politicians to sponsor blackmail campaign against Governor Alex Otti.

In a statement signed yesterday by the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the  government said the individuals had paid some unnamed media outfits as part of their strategy to push false narrative about the incumbent administration to the public.

The statement said: “A plot to unleash consistent vicious media onslaughts and blackmail against the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the government of Abia State, has been uncovered.

“A certain federal lawmaker gathered some journalists last weekend in Abuja and handed over tons of fake documents purportedly from the government to the media men to support the launch of a media onslaught on the governor.

“What is clear is that the plot is being bankrolled by those with the delusional desire to hold Abia State down in penurious perpetuity that were rejected by the people at the polls.

“Those unleashing these endless smear campaigns against Governor Otti are pained by the popular verdict of acceptance, which has continued to place him high as a very performing and popular governor in the country.

  • PDP blasts Otti for claiming payment of five-year salary arrears to judiciary workers in Abia

PDP blasts Otti for claiming payment of five-year salary arrears to judiciary workers in Abia

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia state has chided Governor Alex Otti over claims that his government has started paying judiciary workers in the state their accrued salary arrears of eight years.

Otti, in a statement at the weekend, claimed that the incumbent administration in the state had started paying eight years of arrears of salary owed to the judiciary workers by the previous PDP-led government in the state.

Apparently irked by the statement from the Labour Party’s (LP) led government, the PDP through its vice chairman, Abia North and acting publicity secretary, Abraham Amah in a statement, accused Otti’s chief press secretary, Kazie Uko of mischievously deceiving Abians in their attempt to boost the dwindling popularity of the incumbent administration in the state.

Amah, who accused the LP of attempting to demean the immediate past administration led by Okezie Ikpeazu, said he affirmed that the former governor paid the judicial workers their salaries before he left office on May 29.

He said: “Nothing can be more demeaning, condescending and utterly embarrassing to Alex Otti and his Labour Party in descending to such a cheap, infantile and barefaced lie to paint the past PDP administration of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu bad by alleging that it owed Judiciary workers in Abia State for the eight years it was in government.

“The Abia PDP uses this opportunity to inform the good people of Abia State and Nigerians that Judiciary workers in Abia State were paid their due salaries and allowances as at the time Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu handed over the reins of government to Alex Otti on May 29, 2023, and so the issue of eight years salary arrears is nothing but the wicked construction of Alex Otti administration to continue to ride on the back of lies and propaganda to cover up its incompetence in governance.

“For the records, the Judiciary workers union, JUSUN was in discussions with all the State governments as of 2015, long before Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu assumed office and there were many issues on the table including autonomy for the Judiciary and minimum wage salary increase for its members.

“Unfortunately for the Ikpeazu administration, the same elements shouting about a non-existent eight years salary arrears today were the ones that surreptitiously forced the JUSUN leadership to single out Abia State for a proposed strike meant to embarrass the young administration.

“To stave off the strike, it signed an agreement to increase Judiciary staff minimum wage from N22,000 to N40,000 which many States rejected and JUSUN insisted on being paid the six months arrears prior to the agreement which the previous government refused to pay because it considered it outrageous and that is what Alex Otti and his handlers have mischievously, as always, converted to eight years.

“Thankfully and to the vindication of Abia PDP and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, as widely reported by the mainstream news media in Nigeria, the Chief Registrar of Abia State High Court, Mrs. Victoria Okey-Nwokeukwu had refuted the claim that Judges and Judiciary workers in Abia State were owed salaries because according to her, Honourable Judges are paid by the National Judiciary Council, NJC while Abia State pays their allowances including vacation allowance which has been paid up to 2022 and she described the report that Judiciary workers were being owed eight years’ salary as misleading and an embarrassment to the State government.

He added: “Similarly, the former Commissioner for Finance during the Okezie Ikpeazu administration Mr. Obinna Oriaku weighed in on the matter and described as untrue the statement that Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu owed Judiciary workers eight years’ salaries.

“Writing on his personal social media handle, Mr. Oriaku said. The headline is totally misleading as it leaves the public with the impression Judiciary workers are (being) owed for eight straight years.

“I should have concluded that it’s an error but the press release was signed by the Chief Press Secretary.”

“It is unfortunate that the Alex Otti government would build its image and public relations on lies and propaganda just to defend its incompetence and scapegoat the Abia PDP for its unending policy somersault and failures.

“From what has transpired in this ill-fated outing where its shameful lies have been punctured and ridiculed, it is obvious to Abians that the majority of what this government has sold to them since May 29, 2023, is nothing but lies, lies and lies to deceive them.

“Abians now understand how Alex Otti spent a whopping sum of N552m under his Ministry of Information and propaganda in a quarter (July-September 2023) to disseminate cheap lies and feed Abians and Nigerians with lies and misinformation about his performance on the pages of the newspaper.

“The Abia PDP calls on the good people of Abia State to disregard the unintelligent lies of the Alex Otti administration and understand that Judiciary workers in Abia State are not owed any outstanding salary by the PDP administration of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and Alex Otti should therefore tell Abians the Judiciary workers he has commenced paying their eight years’ salary arrears and to which accounts the money is paid into.”
