The governor in a statement issued on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kazie Uko while reacting to the judgment of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that gave him victory over the PDP and APC, on Friday, dedicated the victory to Abians, especially his teeming supporters in the state.

“My advise to my opponents is that this is a good time to sheath their swords and join hands with me to develop our state, Abia.

“Anyhow you slice and dice it; it costs a lot of money to engage in litigation. while I will not ask them to bring the money to me, I would advise that each of them have villages that are dilapidating; without roads, without water, and I believe that their communities will appreciate it if they would channel those resources into building roads in their villages and communities,” he said.

Otti said the resources spent by his opponents in prosecuting the litigation could be used in providing pipe-borne water and ensuring that Abia remains peaceful for the benefit of its residents.

He said that the victory should not have been contested in the first place and expressed joy that the wishes of the people have come to pass.

NCDMB hails Otti for Abia Park

The Executive Secretary,Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Simbi Kesiye Wabote, has commended the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for establishing the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP), Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area.

The AIIP is envisaged to comprise a Technology Innovation Centre, a Modern Vehicle Assembly Plant, Power Generating Plant, a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Manufacturing Plant, an LPG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Tank Farm, Haulage and Warehousing Facility, an Agricultural Storage and Processing Facility, a Mini Seaport, a Five-star Hotel, and a carbon-neutral residential estate.

In a goodwill message at the groundbreaking ceremony,

Wabote said the park would spur industrial production and “position Abia State as a competitive player in the global market as it will attract national and international investors which will then contribute significantly to the State and nation’s economy”.

Wabote added: “A virile manufacturing sector will not only create much-needed employment opportunities, but it will also have a multiplier effect on the economy, especially if the right policies and mechanisms are put in place to stimulate both forward and backward integration for the products and materials that will be manufactured.”

Such policies and mechanisms should be geared toward reduced production costs, he further said.

Citing the local content philosophy of the Federal Government and its emphasis on domestication and domiciliation of high value-adding activities, which have necessitated the establishment of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Park Scheme (NOGaPS), the executive secretary said, “Based on the realization that high production cost is a major challenge for local manufacturers, we adopted a shared-services strategy where we provide infrastructure such as power supply and utilities such as road network, water, waste treatment, and so on for businesses that will be located on the site.”

Such a strategy, Wabote noted, would “enable manufacturers to focus on their core business of manufacturing rather than adding the role of power generation, road construction, etc.” to their operations. While assuring the Abia state government of the preparedness of the NCDMB “to share our experience with you to ensure this park becomes a success story,” he disclosed that the pilot phases of NOGaPS at Emeyal 1 in Bayelsa State and at Odukpani in Cross River State are “at the final stages of completion, and both will come on stream soon.”

Engr. Wabote implored the people of state to give their full cooperation to the governor to make the project a success.

In his own address, Governor Alex Oti said, “Our vision is clear and our goal direct: we want to responsibly harness the abundant oil and gas reserves within Ukwa for the economic development of the communities within the State and the regions connected to this project location.” He assured the people of the determination of his administration to actualise that vision, while soliciting their support.

Otti dismisses allegations of funding IPOB, Obi’s tribunal with state funds

Abia state governor, Alex Otti, has denied allegations suggesting that state funds were being utilised to support the tribunal litigation of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

He also refuted claims of funding the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), either through state funds or personal finances.

Governor Otti has called upon security agency leaders to clarify the accusations and carry out comprehensive investigations and potential apprehension of those involved.

In response to various reports alleging that he was utilising state funds to support the Obi’s legal proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the IPOB in anticipation of the governorship election petition tribunal verdict on October 6, Otti, through his Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ferdinand Ekeoma, called for a comprehensive investigation.

He urged President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Army Staff, the National Security Adviser, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to thoroughly examine the allegations made against the governor by the mentioned groups.

The Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma while addressing journalists in Umuahia, said that the government strongly and most respectfully made the demand for investigation because the allegations are weighty.

Ekeoma, who questioned the mortality of the group’s call for the delivery of the October 6 judgement outside the state said: “They went further to call for the governorship election judgement billed for 6th October 2023 not to be delivered in Abia because the Abia State government had allegedly concluded plans to intimidate the Justices to deliver judgement in favour of Governor Alex Otti or alternatively would ensure that the Judges would be killed if they fail to deliver judgement in favour of the Governor.”

Ekeoma alleged that the videos arose from two press briefings conducted by individuals suspected to have been hired by opposition elements who were defeated in the last governorship election in the state.

He added: “Governor Alex Otti’s position as Governor of Abia State is a product of a nationally celebrated Governorship election victory, hence we consider it a demeaning insult and a provocative blackmaill for a group of greedy hatchet men with zero stake in the Abia project to sit behind the microphone and spew gibberish that lowers the office of the Governor of Abia state while insulting the sensibilities of our people who have heaved a sigh of relief since the emergence of Governor Alex Otti.

“The hate, anger, bitterness and the trademark of terror contained in the text of the press conference and on the facial expression of the accusers showed a despicable design to subject the government and people of Abia state to public opprobrium.

“The two opposition parties that are in court against Governor Otti and who are suspected to be the brains behind these allegations know very well that they have terrible cases and that their suits would be thrown into the thrash bin on the 6th of October, hence the resort to this panic and desperate strategy of deceit and destabilisation.”

Ekeoma said that those who decided to play dirty politics capable of endangering Abia people should be exposed and punished for choosing the perfidious path that seeks to advance their selfish interest against the genuine interest of millions of innocent Abia people.

Corruption, greed, reasons for Nigeria’s backwardness – Governor Otti

Otti believed that the country has not made much progress in it’s journey for transformation.

Speaking at an independence day parade to mark Nigeria’s 63rd independence Anniversary at  Government House Umuahia, Otti blamed a lot of factors for Nigeria’s inability to live up to the heights expected of it since independence.

The governor emphasised greed, narrow mindedness, desperation for power, unending pilaging of public resources among others are responsible for the country’s downward turn.

He said: “Alot of factors have been blamed for Nigeria’s inability to live up to the heights expected of it since independence 63 years ago.

“My estimation however is that Nigeria has not made much progress in it’s journey of transformation for reasons of greed, and narrow-mindedness.

“The desperation for power, unending pillaging of public resources and the worrisome refusal to see the bigger picture boils down to greed and the ungodly urge to think only of ourselves.

“Corruption and the abuse of resources have combined to cripple several state institutions in the country are manifest products of greed which for me, represents an unhealthy desire to acquire everything for oneself without minding what happens to afterwards and to other people”, Gov Otti noted.

He however maintained that the situation is not completely irredeemable noting that the Independence Anniversary marks “a great day to begin on a new path towards national rebirth”.

“Admitted that a whole lot have fallen out of sync with our dreams and values of nationhood, I do not however think that the situation is completely irredeemable otherwise many of us will not be here today.

“At any rate, we must refuse to be mislead into thinking that change can just happen by merely wishing. A desire for change must match with appropriate commitment,a clear sense of responsibility and an understanding of the quantum of sacrifice required to turn things around.”

The governor said that no nation thrives when young people are isolated and added that Nigeria has lost its best in many fields of endeavor as a result of the “Japa syndrome”, noting that if nothing is done to nip the situation in the bud,the country will continue in it’s downward trajectory.

Governor  Otti said that Nigeria is a country with great potentials but acknowledged that seeds of greatness would not autonomously translate into actual greatness without the collective effort of all stakeholder.

He charged Nigerians to individually and collectively water the seeds of nationhood as planted by the country’s forebearers with a selfless commitment to serving the state and country at large.

Governor Otti said his administration is building a new Abia state that the people would be proud of and added that he would continue to do what needs to be done to lead the state to a new and more desirable destination.

The event which featured the inspection of a parade mounted by a detachment of the Abia state command of the Nigerian Police by Governor Alex Otti was attended by the Deputy Governor, Chief Ikechukwu Emetu, member representing Isialangwa north and south in the House of representatives,Hon Ginger Onwusibe.

The Senior Special Assistant to  Governor of Abia State on Homeland Security, Chukwunenye Nwaogu Alajemba has debunked media reports that he resigned his appointment following the alleged allegation of the “autocratic and undemocratic” style of Governor Otti’s administration.

It had earlier been reported that Alajemba claimed that his resignation which came less than three months after his appointment was because Governor Alex was running the finances of the state solely which was a deviation from all known democratic processes.

But in a statement issued on Saturday, Alajemba described the report as both ridiculous and fallacious.

According to the former SA to Gov. Otti on Homeland, his resignation was because of family reasons.

“The Governor of Abia State is a genuine leader who has mentored me with grace, and he continues to serve Abia State and Nigeria selflessly with vigour, patriotism, and candour.

Speaking at the event, the governor expressed delight about the selection of Abia as one of the 22 pilot states to participate in the first phase of the programme.

He said the aim of the programme was to promote non-agro business and ensure food sufficiency.

Otti, represented by the state Director of Agriculture Services, Dr. Ngozi Obioma, stressed that effective agricultural practices would promote good health, generate employment and engender rural farmers’ participation.

Agric Commissioner Prof. Monica Ironkwe said there was need to revert to organic agricultural culture and practice because of the damage that had been done to agriculture and soil through the use of inorganic agricultural chemicals such as fertilisers, pesticides and others.

She said the time had come for a change to organic agriculture, which, according to her, produced nutrients that were non-toxic to the soil and guaranteed the production of organic healthy food and rejuvenation of impoverished soil nutrients, among other benefits.

The Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Aloysius Mba, said the ministry was committed to organising and managing agricultural sector to facilitate agricultural business, increase food security and employment, commodity value chain and agro-industrial development, to earn foreign exchange and contribute to socio-economic development.

100 Days: For Otti, morning shows the day

    • By Kalu Okoronkwo

If his performance in the first 100 days of being in office is an augury of what is to come, then Abia state is on a great voyage of redemption and renaissance.

Dr. Alex Otti’s first 100 days in office, has been remarkable not just in infrastructural transformation of Aba, Umuahia and other towns but in policy direction of the clear path Abia State will thread in the next four years of his administration.

Dr.  Otti’s has drawn from the reservoir of knowledge and experience as an erudite economist and seasoned banker to launch economic reforms that is breathing life into Abia State’s hitherto comatose economy.

Otti has hit the ground running making fiscal accountability a cornerstone of his administration. He embarked on a comprehensive audit of the state’s finances, uncovering some misappropriation and of mismanagement and initiating measures to block all loopholes.  By promoting transparency and prudent financial management, Otti has paved the way for financial stability in Abia State, a state so blessed yet suffers a steady hemorrhage occasioned by bad governance of successive administrations.

The Governor’s first 100 days in office symbolizes a promise of a better future, one where Abia State would thrive economically, socially, and educationally.

As the state continues to reap the benefits of Otti’s early efforts, it is expected that his tenure will be a turning point in Abia State’s history, setting the stage for a brighter and more prosperous future for all its citizens.

Abia State, fondly referred to as “God’s Own State” and once a beacon of hope, found itself ensnared in a web of wasted years and the persistent clutches of bad governance. As the years rolled by, the promises of development, progress, and prosperity remained elusive for the people of the state. It is a tale of immense potential held back by a recurring cycle of mismanagement and poor leadership.

The state that boasts of rich arable land, creatively gifted population, industrious people, a commercial hub east of the Niger and rich culture, yet, despite these advantages, Abia State and its people have struggled to tap into its full potential. The past years have been the years of locust marked by willful plundering of the commonwealth of the state by a few privileged individuals in government and their non-state actors’ accomplices. This led to stagnation and numerous missed opportunities that could have propelled the state into greatness.

One of the most glaring signs of Abia’s wasted years was its crumbling infrastructural facilities: roads riddled with potholes, dilapidated public buildings, collapse health and education sectors, dysfunctional civil service with years of unpaid salaries and pensions, among other rots in the system.

The backwardness of Abia state that preceded Otti’s administration is a stark reminder that successive administrations have failed to prioritize the basic needs of the people.

Abia’s economy, once promising, was in shambles. The state’s industrial hub, Aba, which was once a thriving centre for trade and commerce, grappled with myriad of issues like inaccessible roads, inadequate power supply and lack of access to credit for small businesses. As a result, the economy was stagnated with unemployment rate alarmingly high.

In Otti’s 100 days, Aba is wearing a new look; streets previously decorated with refuse are now cleaned up and wearing a better look.

In Aba, roads that were hitherto abandoned are now being macadamized and commissioned for the smooth movement of people and goods. Some of the newly commissioned roads are complemented with other road infrastructure in Aba such as street solar lights including; Emelogu, Shallom and Cemetery. Otti is said to have rehabilitated, awarded contracts and commissioned 11 roads in Aba within his first 100 days as Governor of the state. Other parts of the states are not left out in this infrastructural drive to create a livable state in Abia.

Abia’s education sector faced its fair share of challenges. Neglected schools, unqualified teachers, and a lack of modern teaching aids hindered the growth of the state’s youth. Lecturers and other non-academic staff in the state’s institutions of higher learning such as Abia State Polytechnic Aba, Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, State University and teaching hospital have gone for upward of 24 months or more without salary. Even the Teachers and students in the lower rung of education: primary and post-primary were abandoned to their fate. This bred a population of de-motivated teachers and demoralised students.  The results were unaccredited courses in some of the state tertiary institutions by the relevant bodies and very poor performance in external exams such as WAEC and NECO by the students.

The healthcare system in Abia was also in crisis. Decayed hospital infrastructure, underpaid medical personnel, and lack of essential equipment jeopardized the health and well-being of the people. Access to quality healthcare remained a luxury for many Abians, a state where a Governor proudly gave out N500 (five hundred naira) to a nursing mother after delivery. What a shame!

All over the world, bad governance thrives where corruption and mismanagement persist.  Abia was no exception. The misappropriation of public funds, embezzlement, and lack of transparency perpetuated a culture of impunity in Abia state. The culture of corruption eroded trust in government institutions.

However, while Abia State may have experienced wasted years and bad governance, there is now hope on the horizon. The people of Abia are beginning to experience change since the inauguration of Governor Alex Otti as the new Sheriff in town. His 100 days scorecard as Governor of Abia State is a proof to his unwavering commitment to transformative agenda aimed at securing a better future for Ndi-Abia.

The Alex Otti’s administration in just 100 days have brought with it a renewed sense of optimism as welfare for Abians, development of the state, and the eradication of corruption are now being prioritized above parochial sentiments and personal braggadocio.

The long-awaited transparency, accountability, and good governance in Abia state has now berthed with the Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Otti’s administration has also embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of the education sector. His first 100 days saw the launch of scholarship programs, the renovation of schools, and improvements in teacher training. These initiatives have laid the foundation for a brighter educational future for Ndi-Abia.

Healthcare in Abia State has also received a long-overdue transformation under Otti’s leadership. Decaying healthcare facilities are being refurbished, and contracts are awarded for the construction of new ones to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all citizens. This early emphasis on healthcare promised a healthier and more prosperous future for Ndi-Abia.

Youths are not left out in Otti’s visionary leadership as they hold a special place in the Governor’s vision for the state’s future. He has launched various youth empowerment programs, including skill acquisition initiatives and job creation schemes. By nurturing the potential of the youth, he is sowing the seeds for a more vibrant and prosperous State.

What is more: Dr. Alex Otti stands out as a leader in the Nigeria’s conundrum, bringing a wealth of diverse experience to the table as an astute banker and economist. This is already shaping a new vision for leadership in Abia State. His unique blend of financial acumen and public service commitment has the potential to chart an inspiring new course for the people of Abia State.

Otti’s expertise as an economist adds another layer to his leadership acumen. His deep understanding of economic principles, policy formulation, and development strategies equips him with the tools to address the economic challenges facing Abia State. His vision is not just about managing the state’s finances but also about leveraging economic opportunities for growth, job creation, and improved living standards for the people of Abia.

His decision to transition from the corporate world to the political arena was driven by a burning desire to make a difference in the lives of his fellow Abians. His commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance has resonated with many in the state. Otti’s blueprint for Abia State emphasizes economic diversification, infrastructural development, and improved access to quality education and healthcare.

As a former banker, Otti understands the importance of prudent financial management and investment in infrastructure to stimulate economic growth. He is well-positioned to attract investments, both domestic and foreign, to Abia State, thereby creating jobs and expanding the state’s revenue base. His experience in financial inclusion also underscores his commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable in society benefit from the state’s economic progress.

Alex Otti represents a beacon of hope for Abia State.  His commitment to transparency and good governance holds the promise of a brighter future for the people of Abia State.

Otti is well-equipped to lead Abia into a new era of growth, prosperity, and sustainable development. As Abians look to the future, they can draw inspiration from the leadership of Alex Otti, a leader who seeks to harness the full potential of the state and chart a new course towards progress and prosperity.
