Ekiti APC endorses Oyebanji for second term

The Ekiti State Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has passed a vote of confidence on Governor Biodun Oyebanji with a resolution he would be supported for a second term in office.

The resolution was unanimously taken during a meeting with the Governor at the party’s  Secretariat in Ajilosun, Ado- Ekiti on Thursday where the extended executive council comprising the state working committee and leaders of the party across the 16 local government areas reviewed the Governor’s performance and endorsed him for a second term.

At the meeting, which was also attended by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye; Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye and Special Adviser on Political and Inter-party Matters, Chief Jide Awe and other dignitaries, Mr Mike Akinleye, Chairman, APC Ado Local Government moved the motion for the endorsement of the Governor for a second term in office. He acknowledged the visits of the Governor at various ward meetings and policies and programmes, which he said had brought succour to Ekiti people.

These, according to him, have made the Governor to govern seamlessly with attendant socio-economic development of the state and better life for the people.

    Oyebanji and politics of inclusivity

    By Segun Dipe

There is this whining coming from some uncoordinated quarters that Governor Biodun Oyebanji, of Ekiti State, aka BAO, might have been side-lining the party (APC) echelons in his selection for appointments in the state. These whiners also alleged that the opposition parties were getting an unreasonable chunk at the expense of party faithful.

Those holding this view are perhaps not up to speed with the modern-day democracy. They fail to understand that today’s politics abhors a winner-takes-all pattern of victory known to past elections. A winner today cannot afford to take all, else he or she will know no political peace.

Perhaps those clamouring for BAO to embrace the winner-takes-all strategy were also absent during his campaign, prelude to the 2022 governorship election. The sing-song of the APC candidate then was that he would make Ekiti an inclusive state if voted in. That he would bring all Ekitians together without any discrimination. That Ekiti will not be a “we” versus “them” in his time, but a state convenient for all to live and earn their living.

Read Also: Adeleke’s aide absent as IGP starts defamation case over comment against Oyetola’s ex-commissioner

Also, after the election, BAO stretched his arm of fellowship to all other contestants, their political parties and their leaders, regarding them all as part of his government. He also regarded all past governors of the state as his mentors and leaders, and has since been relating with them as such.

As an advocate of inclusion, BAO believes that “we” includes every citizen regardless of sex, ethnicity, religion, skin colour, or sexual orientation.

Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian human rights scholar, defines the ideal inclusive state as, “a community of equal rights-bearing citizens united in patriotic attachment to a shared set of political practises and values.”

The inclusion of all human beings in the political system is the logical corollary of believing that every individual has moral value. The first victory for politics of inclusion, as against politics of resentment is the formal right of citizens, that is, the incorporation, influence and representation of individuals from all social, ethnic, regional and socio-economic group within democratic institutions.

BAO today practises politics of equity, politics of diversity, politics of inclusion and politics of belonging (EDIB). And this has to do with his evolvement as an unusual politician.

Contrary to the known evolution of a politician, BAO was first a statesman before becoming a governor. A statesman is defined as a skilled, experienced and respected political leader. Or how do you refer to someone who was actively involved in the creation of a state? At the formation of Ekiti State, young Oyebanji was the secretary of the committee agitating for the carving out of Ekiti from the old Ondo State, which eventually became a reality. History will be kind to refer to BAO as the youngest founding father of Ekiti State.

Contrary to some criticism that BAO was not a politician and an unwilling governor, he is actually the most prepared governor Ekiti State has had to date. BAO was not at any point a political rookie. He was qualified and competent to mount the saddle at the time he did. He studied Political Science up to the Masters level, taught politics as a course at the university level, and served under all the progressive governors the state ever had. Yet, he laid claim to no glory when the state took off. He simply withdrew to continue building his career in the corporate world only to be called upon to serve in the government of the first democratic governor of the state, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and had ever since remained in the corridor of power to learn beyond limits. If such person was not prepared for governance, who then is?

As regards how BAO has been going about his appointments, he has not reneged in his promise of returning political power to the political party. He gives party leaders in each of the 16 Local Governments and 18 LCDAs the power to nominate those they consider fit to represent them in government. They in turn do so through the leaders in each of the 177 wards across the state and they recommend between 2-5 names as occasion warrants and those names go through screening and shortlisting for the various positions at the state or local government levels.

Not all, BAO has continually consulted all those who governed the state before him, not minding their party affiliations, he defers to them on matters of governance. His choice of giving them slots in his appointments is also a means of giving them a sense of belonging. In terms of projects, BAO consults the people on their preferences and prioritises projects that directly impact the lives of the people. His empathy for the needs of the people knows no boundary.

If this is misgovernance, then, the governor’s critics should tell the world what their understanding of governance is. If it is lack of political understanding, then BAO is not willing to learn otherwise. He is today’s governor, not that of yester years.

Ekiti govt defends Oyebanji’s U.S. trip

Ekiti State government has berated an online news medium for its misleading and fictitious report on Governor Abiodun Oyebanji’s trip to the United States of America.

A statement by the governor’s media adviser, Yinka Oyebode, reads: “The fallacious report is coming barely 72 hours after the government debunked a mischievous claim about the governor’s trip and gave fresh clarifications on his itinerary in the course of the working visit to the US.

“Apparently propelled by ulterior motives, and ashamed of owning up to its unprofessional reportage, the medium came up with another hurriedly baked story, which, at best, is filled with sound and fury signifying nothing. Or how else does one justify the unfounded claims that the trip gulped $500,000, and that 20 people were on the governor’s entourage.

“The government of Ekiti State is not unaware of satanic alliance with some elements in the society out to distract the governor and the government. It is, however, shameful to allow oneself be used for such a ridiculous assignment, which is dead on arrival.

Ekiti APC leaders kick against Oyebanji’s appointment of Fayose’s loyalists

There is unease in the Ekiti state chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC following Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s appointment of political associates of former Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Some stakeholders of the APC on Wednesday, May 15, expressed deep disappointment over the selection of several of Fayose’s loyalists as Special Advisers (SAs) and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), while APC members have yet to receive appointments.

Stakeholders under the auspices of Concerned Ekiti APC stakeholders in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday by its convener, Prince Aderobaki Adeleye wondered that despite their numerous sacrifices and contribution to the success of the party in the last governorship poll, appointments were given to members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Describing the action of the governor as unacceptable and capable of creating division in the APC, the stakeholders urged the governor to urgently retrace his step and redress the anomaly in the interest of the party’s survival before it is too late.

He said: “The attention of the Concerned Ekiti APC Stakeholders has been drawn to the recent appointments by His Excellency, Biodun Oyebanji which has unduly favoured known opposition figures who did not contribute anything to the success of the APC, while loyal party members have been sidelined.

“A thorough perusal of the lists of the appointments of SAs, SSAs and others showed that associates of the former Governor, Ayodele Fayose have been unduly favoured to the exclusion of APC members, as loyal party men we view this development as unfair, unjust and a direct affront to our collective sensibilities.

“We understand that besides these appointment slots, the former governor has been enjoying some undeserved benefits and patronages, while leaders of the APC who toil day and night to ensure victories of the party have been left in the cold.

“We therefore call on the national leadership of our party to rein in Governor Oyebanji to urgently correct these missteps in the overall interest and wellbeing of members of our party.

“While we concede to the fact that Fayose is a former governor of the state, the question is how many APC members were given appointments when he was at the helm of affairs in our state.”

When contacted for reaction, the APC state publicity secretary, Segun Dipe dismissed the claims of the stakeholders as unfounded and in bad faith.

He said the governor has been deferring to the party before making appointments, adding that Oyebanji made it clear from inception that he would carry former governors along in his administration irrespective of their political inclinations.

He however advised the aggrieved members to channel their grievances to the appropriate organs of the party that will look dispassionately at their complaints, if any, before going to the press.

  • Ekiti as an amazing story

    Ekiti as an amazing story

    By Funmilola Olarewaju

In the past few days, videos of market women leaders, aka Iyalojas, in Ekiti State moderating the prices of goods in the markets within their jurisdictions have been trending. According to reliable information, the genesis of the viral video was a call made by the First Lady of Ekiti State, Olayemi Oyebanji appealing to the Iyalojas to prevail on their members to bring down the cost of goods. Oyebanji was also reported to have had a meeting with female chiefs, urging them to intervene.

It didn’t stop there! The State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Tayo Adeola summoned a meeting of Heads of various associations, ranging from the market women to the road transport workers, petty traders and canteen owners, where she also urged them to bring down the cost of goods and services. “That’s what led to the viral videos. Even the transporters reduced their fares.”

‘Aríse laríkà. Aríkà baba ìrègún’ (Opportunity to do a good deed gives the doer the opportunity to lay them to heart, and to count them is the chief basis for seeking reward for them secretly or indirectly). From Education to Health; and from Agriculture to Culture and Tourism, it is important to note that the Biodun Oyebanji-led government in Ekiti State has been doing a lot and the results have been showing! Only recently, the governor reportedly paid N546.9m as WAEC/SSCE fees to support 16,269 Secondary School Students in the state.

In the power sector, Oyebanji’s efforts on stable electricity supply have been yielding results even as the African Development Bank recently approved the sum of $110,000 to fund the State Power Reform Plan. From reports, Ekiti is also working with other states and the country to ensure state, regional and national operationalization of the new Electricity Act 2023. Many more in this important sector!

In 2023, during the inauguration of a facility in Aramoko-Ekiti, Oyebanji was said to have promised to donate a well-equipped maternity complex to Aramoko-Ekiti General Hospital in memory of his late mother. The facility is now almost ready for inauguration. Coincidentally, the governor was born in the hospital 56 years ago.

It needs to be noted that Ekiti under Oyebanji has become an amazing story of faith, determination and success, but then, the biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. For instance, during their time, the Obafemi Awolowos, the Ahmadu Bellos and the Nnamdi Azikiwes prepared the pupils for the world which they saw clearly! Nigerians also used to know Ekiti with his many professors. Now, it is as if all Ekiti professors have relocated to the Eastern part of the country. Once upon a time, the North was described as an educational disadvantaged state but now, power has also changed hands with jealous rage. Though it’s not the fault of the present government, the strategic aim for Ekiti should revolve around reclaiming its pride of place.

To become great in life, the battleground is education. The basic thing therefore is not just talking about education but the right type of education that can give Ekiti sons and daughters the wherewithal to be competitive while not allowing other sectors to suffer. To this end, it behooves the government to focus on building an education system that can make the state competitive in the years ahead, starting from the nursery school. In other words, any forward movement over the next 10 to 20 years must start with revamping the public primary school curriculum and building an economy with a focus on 18 years’ time to make the pupils competitively prepared for a different world from the world that we know. Why? A 4-year-old in 2024 will be bound to face a competitive world of artificial intelligence and robot technology in the Year 2034.

Since the road cannot close on the man with a cutlass, it will also be in the interest of Ekiti to localize the new electricity format by getting public private sector-driven investment into, and up the ante of, especially the renewables to attract private investments to produce electricity upgrid.

While commending the governor for the palliatives he recently rolled out to the residents, it’s also advisable that he looks inward for ways to improve productivity. Enough of resting on Abuja for handouts! In view of this, training the youth groups to take their destinies in their hands won’t be out of place.

Ekiti under Oyebanji must also look in the direction of building industries based on the new technology: technology hubs and agro-processing plants. The government has to be focused on building an economy that will be relevant for tomorrow and an economy that will not destroy the future of tomorrow. Of course, all these are achievable if the security mindfulness of the state is watertight.

On the economic front, it is believed that Ekiti has given much needed support and cooperation to the governor. Give it to Oyebanji, he has also been able to manage the entire power bloc in the state very well. Added to this is that he’s doing what an average civil servant in Ekiti State wants! So, while it would be extremely needed for Ekitis to help their state reach the expected end of its noble visions, it is also expected of the governor to make the best combination of the human and natural resources available to the state, coupled with its unique homogenous nature, to make a difference.

For Oyebanji to make Ekiti a template for others to copy, he must continue to look beyond the current challenges by fetching water in preparation for the season of thirst. One sure way of achieving this is the 12-point relief economic programme unveiled by the government “to alleviate the hardship being experienced by the people of the state in the face of the current global economic downturn”. The reintroduction of ‘Owo Arugbo’ is also a step in the right direction while opportunities for investment in the agriculture sector should be encouraged to ensure food security.

Accept it or not, the governor’s decision to reintroduce the construction of 5 kilometres of roads per Local Government will be a game changer in grassroots development. Since Ado-Ekiti – Akure dualization, being undertaken by the Federal Government, is billed to terminate at the endpoint of the flyover bridge, it therefore means that the contractor handling the Ado-Ekiti – Ikere-Ekiti axis must mobilize to site and hold his end of the bargain for the overall purpose of easing traffic congestion. Attention must also be paid to the Phase 2 of Ado-Ekiti – Iyin-Ekiti – Igede-Ekiti – Aramoko-Ekiti – Itawure Road since it’s of economic value. Also in this class are the dualization of the road leading to Afe Babalola University, the iconic Ring Road project and the rehabilitation of the adjoining roads to the section of Old Garage. The flyover bridge will add to the aesthetic beauty of the capital city as well as create economic activities around the area.

Oyebanji is doing well in terms of governance but, politically, he may need to up his game in the days ahead because ‘the enemy and the evildoer are within close proximity.’ The governor needs to be very decisive and keep his team intact.

Finally, kudos to the governor, who, till date is the only product of Ekiti State University (EKSU), formerly known as Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti, to be a governor and the first alumnus of the school to be a visitor to the school, for displaying statesmanship! Congratulations on his incredible success and wishing him all the best on his way to his 2nd Term!

This, he said, will ensure that such investors will be able to thrive and do their business without hindrance.

Addressing a one-day retreat organized by Cavista Holdings at the Ikogosi Warm Springs and Conference Centre, Governor Oyebanji, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Honourable Olaiya Atibioke, underscored the traditional rulers’ significance as liaisons between the people and government, particularly in fostering socio-economic growth, notably in agriculture.

He urged them to take advantage of their status and position in the community to communicate government policies and programmes to their people regularly, mobilise support for new investments, and act as mediators where required to ensure peaceful co-existence between businesses and communities.

Commending Cavista Holdings for its commitment to the state’s advancement, the governor highlighted the company’s “Cassava Revolution” plan to generate employment for 10,000 youths through partnerships with local communities and Agbeyewa Farms Limited, a Cavista subsidiary.

In his address to the traditional rulers, Chairman of Cavista Holdings, Niyi John Olajide, emphasized the transformative potential of agricultural investment, affirming the company’s enduring dedication to Ekiti’s prosperity.

He stated that Ekiti has the potential to be a hub for cassava production, ensuring economic empowerment and food security.

He said: “While I may not be a farmer myself, my passion for economic development and my understanding of the fundamental role of successful commercial agriculture in driving the economic transformation of any people is why we are investing in Ekiti state through Agbeyewa Farms… we are here for the long haul. We are not going anywhere.”

Olajide further stressed that through the cassava revolution, Ekiti will become the home of the cassava revolution in Nigeria, providing millions of tonnes of cassava to feed millions of people, and empowering farmers in the state.

The Vice-Chancellor, of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Professor Abayomi Fasina delivered the keynote address, where he elaborated on the vast agribusiness opportunities available to communities, emphasizing the role of traditional rulers in poverty alleviation and job creation.

In a resounding endorsement, traditional rulers pledged their support for the initiative, acknowledging Cavista Holdings’ contributions to the state’s development.

Speaking on their behalf, the Chairman of the Ekiti State traditional rulers, Oba Ayorinde Faboro (the Olojudo of Ido-Ekiti), hailed the event as a historic gathering of traditional rulers and pledged their unified backing for the plan’s implementation.

The one-day retreat witnessed the presence of dignitaries including Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adeoye Stephen Aribasoye, Majority Leader Tolulope Ige, Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof Mobolaji Aluko and Director General of Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency, Mrs. Lolade Olutola, signaling broad-based support for the agribusiness initiative.
